Biafra attends African Union (AU) meeting in Nairobi as member

The Supreme Council of Indigenous People of Biafra is among those invited as members to attend the on-going General Assembly of the African Union (AU) in Nairobi, Kenya. A Daily Sun report said the group sent its maiden delegation to the meeting on Wednesday “having been invited like other countries.” This, according to the paper, was sequel to AU’s recent admission of the Indigenous People of Biafra to the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC).
The report quoted Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council of Indigenous People of Biafra and former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, as disclosing that the delegation is expected to spend five days in Nairobi, Kenya for the meeting.
“We received our invitation from Addis Abbaba the way others received theirs to be part of the meeting. And this means we are getting international recognition and opportunity to interact and present our case at the international level. It is a big leap forward,” Ikedife was quoted as saying.
The paper said that there has been a dramatic change in the struggle to actualise the Biafran nation.
It added that checks revealed that professionals, intellectuals and diplomats, among the indigenous people of Biafra, home and abroad using legal framework outside the pattern of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), have taken up the struggle.

Fear grips APGA candidates as Court removes Victor Umeh.

You may recall that Ejike Uche the deputy National Chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) last week instituted against against Victor Umeh's continues hold on the leadership of the party where he argue that Umeh can not continue as Chairman of the party while running for the Senate.

He letter of suspension last two weeks claimed to have assumed the leadership of the party before he went on to institute the case that removed Umeh this afternoon.

While we wait for the details of the judgement, most of the APGA candidates contacted , stated that they need to consult their lawyers and also see the details of the judgement in order to know the implication of it to their already won ticket of the party.
Our attempt to reach Umeh proved abortive for his number remain unavailable at the point of filling this report.

A source closed to the Chief Ejike Uche who by the virtue of the judgement of today is now the Acting National Chairman of APGA said that the move is to remove the party from total imprisonment constituted by over 10years leadership of Umeh.
He said :

" We moved to return the party to the people .Yes , we have to stop the MUGABE-ism of Umeh and today, the Court has taken a bold step towards that and you will agree with me that party members across the world are very happy." He said.

The question is , where do APGA go from here as Umeh loses?

The Senate yesterday assured Nigerians that the Tobacco Products Regulation and Control Bill, 2014 being considered by it was not aimed at closing down multinational firms producing the product but targeted at safeguarding the health of the people.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, stated this at the public hearing of the Committee to consider the harmonised National Tobacco Control Bill 2012(Senate Bill) and 2014(Executive Bill) which seeks to repeal the Tobacco (Control) Act 1990.

Okowa stated this while reacting to the concerns raised by the Oyo State Government that any stringent regulations in the industry would worsen the economic situation of its people, assuring that the interest of all stakeholders would be taken into consideration in the passage of the bill.

This preface was written specifically because of my late father’s influence on my smoking life. Let every parent teach their children what is good and what is bad at that early developmental stages of their life to enable them grow with that consciousness. On the 13th of May 1998, I was going through my father’s bookshelf when I found a wonderful article titled “you can quit smoking” The article was published in an old religious journal ‘The plain truth’. Nevertheless, the knowledge and hatred kept me far from getting addicted. I continually told myself that this habit is not good and I don’t really like it. With that consciousness, I came close to quitting before my graduation but because of my smoking friends, I couldn’t quit.
I am glad I latter did the moment I lost contact with my smoking friends.

INCREASE IN HEART BEAT RATE:
Within two minutes of inhaling tobacco, the carbon-monoxide present in the tobacco smoke increases the blood pressure and the heart beat rate respectively.

Haemoglobin is a protein in the blood that transports oxygen around the body by binding with oxygen.  However, once we smoke, the carbon-monoxide in the smoke has a greater affinity for binding to Haemoglobin than oxygen (over 200 times greater than oxygen).  The carbon-monoxide displaces oxygen and bind with haemoglobin; as a result of this the blood carries less oxygen.  This means that the heart of a smoker does extra work by pumping blood at an increased rate to be able to transport enough oxygen to the brain, heart, muscle and other organs.

Secondly, the complex compound which carbon-monoxide forms with haemoglobin is a stable compound (carboxyhaemoglobin).  It is not reversible like oxyhaeoglobin which it forms with oxygen, because of this; the percentage of free haemoglobin in the blood is reduced continually once they bind to carbon monoxide as you smoke.

Note: oxygen is essential for cellular respiration and our brain cells can only live for a few minutes without oxygen.
