The 22-hour manhunt for the surviving Boston bombing suspect reached a dramatic and surprising conclusion on Friday night when 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured alive after being surrounded by heavily armed police in a suburban backyard. Tsarnaev was found hiding in a boat in the yard of a home in Watertown, the small town where his elder brother Tamerlan was fatally shot by police after a chase which began on Thursday night. The pair had been identified as suspects in Monday's double bomb attack on the Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured more than 170. For about two hours, Tsarnaev had been surrounded by Swat teams and hundreds of other officers, surviving a barrage of gunfire and flash grenades. At 8.41pm, it was finally announced over the police radio: "Suspect in custody". The suspect was injured in Thursday's shootout and had suffered significant blood loss. Police said he was in a serious condition in hospital on Friday night. When the news came through that Tsarnaev captured alive, Thomas Menino, the mayor of Boston who has been a stalwart throughout the week despite struggling with his own health issues, reacted by saying: "We got him." A large crowd gathered near the location of the suspect's arrest began clapping and shouting "Thank you" as a police ambulance carrying the suspect drove by. At a jubilant press conference after the arrest, the sense of relief among law enforcement officials was palpable. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/04/19/fbi-releases-photos-boston-marathon-bombing-suspects/ http://www.forbes.com/sites/davidewalt/2013/04/19/suspect-captured-in-hunt-for-boston-marathon-bombers/ http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/apr/20/boston-suspect-dzhokhar-tsarnaev-captured-alive |

Nigerian security forces say they have killed 20 members of the Boko Haram armed rebel group in the northeast of the country, after the fighters attacked a military base there. Sunday's attack in the village of Monguno in Borno state followed an unverified video by Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the Boko Haram, was circulated rejecting peace talks with the government and saying attacks will continue. "Whoever kills any of our member should await a grave retaliation from us," said Shekau in the undated video. "We will continue waging war against them until we succeeded in establishing an Islamic state in Nigeria." Sagir Musa, the military spokesman, said that the 20 fighters who stormed the base with gunfire and explosives were killed. However, he did not say if any soldiers or civilians were killed or wounded in the attack. Another security official, speaking on condition of anonymity to the AP news agency, confirmed the attack but said details of the incident remained sketchy. Shekau said that he did not know Sheikh Mohammed Abdulaziz, who proclaimed to be "second-in-command" in Boko Haram and had announced a ceasefire in January, and rejected all his claims and denies any association with the him. Last week, rebels linked to Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of seven French tourists from northern Cameroon. Meanwhile, Human rights groups have blamed both Boko Haram and the security forces of violent attacks on civilians in the region. |

The Obafemi Martins-transfer saga looks like it will drag on for at least a few more days, as the latest reports suggest nothing will be finalized until Monday at the earliest. Nothing from the Seattle Sounders' end suggests they are preparing to walk away, but it does appear as though Levante is doing everything in their power to drag this out as long as they can. Wading through the various reports makes it tough to figure out exactly what is happening, but the Levante president appears to have told media that they have stepped away from the negotiations. Sounders Sporting Director Chris Henderson has also reportedly returned. That seems to suggest negotiations are almost entirely being done between the leagues and their lawyers. Martins has an exit clause in his contract that is triggered if any team is willing to pay the roughly $4 million fee. The Sounders apparently offered that money to Levante, but the board turned it down. The team's president told reporters that they turned it down for "sporting" reasons, as they have no real way of replacing their leading scorer at this point in the season. The Sounders can still trigger the exit clause, but they'll have to pay the money to the league instead. They may also have to pay the equivalent of nearly $800,000 in taxes. It's unclear if that amount would be in addition to the $4 million transfer fee. http://blogs.seattletimes.com/soundersfc/2013/02/26/gm-hanauer-on-the-martins-pursuit-mls-cup-as-more-of-a-singular-goal-and-more/ http://www.sounderatheart.com/2013/3/1/4054960/obafemi-martins-transfer-on-hold |

Though America may be the "land of opportunity," Switzerland will be the best place to be born in 2013 according to a quality-of-life index from the Economist Intelligence Unit. The EIU, a sister company to The Economist magazine, determines quality of life based on surveys of the population covering 11 factors including wealth, crime, family life, trust in government and the stability of the economy. Best U.S. states to live in 2032 Income estimates for babies born in 2013 are based on projections for the year 2030, when those children will come of age. The top ten best places to be born in 2013: 1. Switzerland 2. Australia 3. Norway 4. Sweden 5. Denmark 6. Singapore 7. New Zealand 8. Netherlands 9. Canada 10. Hong Kong With its small but very stable economy, Switzerland comes in first, wealthy, healthy and trusting of its public institutions. The United States, "where babies will inherit the large debts of the boomer generation, languishes back in 16th place," the EIU explains. Feeling the effects of the European monetary crisis, "the largest European economies, France (26), Germany (tied with the U.S. for 16) and Britain (27), don't do particularly well." The quality-of-life index also reflects changes in the Middle East and North Africa, where "life expectancy continues to increase steadily and political freedoms have spread across the globe," though Nigeria comes in as the worst place for a baby to be born in 2013. Other interesting ratings include China, coming in at 49, and Russia, coming in at 72. Back in 1988, the United States was in first place, with France in second, and West Germany in third. Zimbabwe was last, with Iraq second to last and Iran third to last. For a more detailed explanation of how these numbers are calculated, see "the lottery of life methodology." All said, the takeaway from the index seems to be that in today's world, a country's stability and trust in public institutions results in the best quality of life for its citizens. http://allafrica.com/stories/201211230296.html http://www.nigeriatodaynews.com/nigeria-worst-country-to-be-born-in-eiu-rates/ http://africanspotlight.com/2012/11/nigeria-ranked-worst-country-to-be-born-in-2013-economist-intelligence/ |
