The two Aides no get names? This world try get money... E get why |
Yeah, last year. I rejected a farm consultancy work in Niger state, #300k monthly, yield from 1 hectare, 10k for data, free accomodation and transportation. Reasons are... Insecurity and distance. Borgu local government 365km from Suleja. Niger state were be bandit den. Abeg o |
Konjidam:In all I got 34 bags in all. But threshing manually can kill.. if u don't have source of threshing machine, don't try it. I will upload the pictures soon, network for here bad |
Yeah, if they was no issues, I would had still used ridges because apart from waterlogging, it help in proper root anchorage. I would have still applied atrazine because it help to hold weed seed opes: |
God no dey quickly kill people like this... God go keep am make she teach people lesson. GanagiBitrus: |
gunners160:do your calculations well inorder to prevent rancidity |
Pest and disease challenge...fungi disease to be precise gunners160: |
Na big question o |
opes:yeah true... But in my place, the only machine u can see for lease is rice thresher.... For storage, sun dry it very well to reduce the moisture content then put phostoxin tablet at 5 tablets per sack. Tie the tablet in a piece of clothe before inserting. Anytime u start seeing weevil on the sack, the tablet have expired. |
opes:yes the variety is good. But going commercial without a thresher is not adviceable... Manual threshing is too tedious |
25cm apart...1 seed per hole.... I have manually threshed 26 bags and we are still threshing. opes: |
omolola100:which state is that? |
I will advice u go into agriculture, cassava farming to be precise. Get a land, run the soil test to know the nutritional information of the soil then start. Start with just 1 hectare. If u use 0.9m by 0.9m spacing configuration, 12300 heaps can seat on 1 hectare. Cost of 1 heap in my location ( kogi state) is #30. That's #369,000 Get your stem from disease free farm at #500 per bundle,u need 60 bundle for 1 hectare that's #30,000 and the Keke that will bring the stems should be pegged at #7000.. total #37,000 U need 6 litres of glyphosate at pre planting stage and a litre is #4000 that's #20,000 Labour for planting plus their feeding should be pegged at #50,000 For pre emergence herbicide, u need 4 litres of paraquat and 3kg of atrazin at #6000 and #8000 respectively... #48,000 Labour for herbicide application should be pegged at #20,000 Cassava requires 135kg of nitrogen, 40kg of phosphorus and same amount of potasium 8 weeks after planting, so 4 bags of Npk fertilizer at #40,000 per bag... #160,000 Bringing total expenditure to #708,000 If u follow the above Agronomic practices, u can get 2.5kg per heap. That is 2.5kg * 12,300 heaps which is 30,750kg 1 tin is 1000kg which means u can get 30.75 ton. A ton is #110,000 in the local market now. Don't forget u will still inter crop this cassava with sweet maize probably sc510 by seedco which is a 82 days variety. A cob in my place from road side vendor is #200, and u will sell at wholesale at 5 for #600 Which means from your 12,300 heaps u are sure of 12,300 cobs. Let's say u got 11,000 big cobs, sell at 5 cobs for #600 means u will get #1,320,000 Cassava inter cropped with maize I just like using 1 stone to kill two birds. But cassava takes maximum 8 months bfor hervest. And don't forget, u will engage 1 security to be viewing the farm for u. |
betabread:By God's grace |
Kehfie:Thanks for the prayers. Anytime u call Mr Nnamdi, tell him Ezekiel from Nairaland gave u his number. |
Kehfie:Call this number..08101723955( Mr Nnamdi ) He's manager Greenyelwa Nigeria Limited. Greenyelwa is an organic fertilizer company. They have many organic agro products. Mr Nnamdi will explain better. |
Hervesting commenced on the 9th. Sorry for not posting pictures of it. I was sick and hospitalized for 3 days, so doctors advice I rest. Yield comes from two things. (1) the cob lenght (2) The row number( frm 16 above)
|
Kehfie:Greenyelwa is a company owned by Doctor Vincent Okpara, you can know more about them by visiting the website www.greenyelwa.com. Attached are pictures of source of their oraginc fertilizer

[quote author=betabread post=132229342]Can anybody here talk about the disdvantages of modern farming methods especially modern maize farming methods........ Yes, they are so many disadvantages of modern maize farming methods. Pesticides and Herbicides: The use of synthetic chemicals can lead to pesticide resistance in pests, harming beneficial insects and contaminating water supplies. Though pesticides comes with pre harvest interval. The preharvest interval (PHI) is the wait time between a pesticide application and when a crop can be harvested. It's best to go organic, which is why I will be going fully organic next year, getting my organic herbicide, pesticides and fertilizer from GREENYELWA Food Safety: The use of chemicals and antibiotics in maize farming can contribute to health risks for consumers, including antibiotic resistance. Nutritional Quality: Some argue that high-yield maize(hybrid) lack the nutritional quality of traditionally grown varieties, potentially affecting human health. Debt and Financial Pressure: Farmers may incur significant debt to invest in modern maize cultivation technologies and inputs, leading to financial instability. AMONG MANY DISADVANTAGES |

SEED RATE AND PLANT POPULATION IN MAIZE PRODUCTION 🌽 The seed rate for maize varies depending on seed size and desired plant population. Typically, a seed rate of *20-25 kg per hectare* is recommended to achieve an ideal population of *50,000 to 60,000 plants per hectare*. Why Is Plant Population Important? - Low plant population: This can lead to uneven plant stands, increased weed competition, and reduced yields due to excessive branching. - High plant population: While higher populations can increase cob clearance, they may cause competition for water and nutrients, leading to stunted growth and poor yield quality. The ideal maize population is around 55,000 plants per hectare. However, maize is quite adaptable and can perform well across a range of populations. A minimum of 45,000 and a maximum of 75,000 plants per hectare is recommended, with the higher end increasing the risk of competition and lodging, but also potentially offering greater yields. - Row spacing: Maize is typically planted with row spacings between 60 and 90 cm. Narrower rows often yield a slight advantage (5-10%), but wider rows allow for easier management. *How to Determine Seed Rate (SR)* Farmers can calculate the required seeding rate using this formula: Seed Rate (SR) = Desired plant density (DPD) * [100/germination percent (GP)] * [100 / (100 - average percent stand loss (APSL)] Example: Let’s assume a farmer is targeting a plant density of 55,000 plants per hectare with a germination rate of 90% and an average stand loss of 5%. The SR calculation would be as follows: SR = 55,000 * [100 / 90] * [100 / (100 - 5)] SR = 55,000 * 1.11 * 1.052 SR = 64,308 seeds per hectare Assuming the 1,000 grain weight for maize is approximately 0.28 kg, the actual amount of seed required would be: = (64,308 * 0.28) / 1,000 = 18.00624 kg per hectare This means that the farmer would need approximately 18 kg of maize seed per hectare to achieve the desired plant population. Accurate seed rate calculations help maximize yield potential while minimizing seed wastage and resource competition! |
