Little background:
I was born and raised in the North, Kaduna state to be precise, so i happen to experience first hand the lifestyle of core Northerners aka Hausa. So i've not been here since 2011 religious crisis.
I lost my mom last month when i was deployed in Sri lanka, i came back last week to see my aged father in Kano, you know spend my leave with family.

So here's the story:
Since i've been here ( a small community in Wudil Kano), ive noticed a trend. Gone were the days when beggars could only be found on the street, or amongst the disabled. A vast majority of the populace have been reduced to beggars. I mean some of this people literary knock on our gate and shameleslly sollicit for financial help from me especially knowing well i'm a visitor in the community, or even my sibling or my dad. According to my father, this has been the norm for a while, and popsy happens to be a retired Reverend and would always help people unless it's not in his power to do so.
Elders, children, even their hijab adorning women literary approach me with sob stories anytime i venture out of the house, especially if im putting on anything remotely resembling millitary fatigues.

What is puzzling and still hardening my heart against this people is this:
This are the same set of people who will collect 1k, maggi and oil to sell their vote. Or vote along ethno-religious lines with the illusion of holding power to the north, to islam, or to spite another segment of the country.
I hold no pity for them, God forgive me.

Let them suffer for 600 years.

Weed

Pre emergence herbicide application

4 litres of glyphosate is required per hectare.

This help to control weed

It rained so preparation for broadcasting commenced.

5kg of sesame seed is required for an hectare, as this should be mixed with 10kg of sharp sand before broadcasting. The sesame seed should also be mixed with a pesticide that have Lambda cyhalotrin as active ingredient. This pesticide will help to prevent ant picking and the sharp sand help to achieve even distribution of seed on the flat bed during broadcasting.

Due to the size of the plot, I am using 0.5kg mixed with 1kg of sharp sand.

5kg of sesame is required per hectare. We have many varieties of seed. But I am using ncriben04e, it is high yielding, it has low shattering ability.

Contact any national cereal research institute in your State for ncriben04e seedling. It can go as high as 1.5 tonne per hectare

Selection of seed can make or break a farmer season. Before u select your seed, check it's adaptability to your agro ecological zone and also check for it's defensive Agronomic packages.

Rain is yet to start fully.. so planting depends on when it falls.

Agriculture is hard to start, but when you start the right way you become unstoppable.

The plot is now clean. Next operation is to quickly run the soil test. Sesame requires 50kg of nitrogen, 60kg of phosphorus and 35kg of potassium per hectare.

3 bags of Npk 20 10 10 and 2 bags of urea to be applied at the juvenile stage is required per hectare

I am testing for soil pH, soil organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus and pottasium.

It is very important to know the soil, never invest your money into any farming venture without first acquiring the knowledge.

Burning and pre planting herbicide application.

Pre planting herbicide is necessary inorder to help suppress the weed intensity when rainfall become established.

Glyphosate at 250 mil per 16 litre spray.

6 litres of glyphosate is required per hectare.

Sesame ( beniseed) is second most exported cash crop after cocoa. A tonne go as high as #1,700,000 in the open market now.

The fact that sesame is allerlopathic does not mean it likes weed. So land preparation commenced immediately. We started first by removing the dirt since we are using an abondoned bola for this test run. We cleared all the dirt's and burn, after which pre planting herbicide application was done.

Take this advantage and start something at home ... Let's boost food supply in the country. Make use of that small space in your compound, it is very cheap to cultivate.

Goats don't like it, cows don't like it.... So u won't have to be stressed out chasing goats or afraid of herdsmen.....

One will not be comfortable spending all this money on an open land that will likely be ravaged by some herdsmen and their cattle.
How can one take care of these encroaching herdsmen?
Making provision for fencing one's farmland?
Shouldn't the cost of fencing be part of the cost of production?

herdsmen is a serious treat to good security in this country.... I pray the government find a lasting solution to their problem if not, wahala dey o.

brother, nothing is impossible in agriculture.... Good Agronomic practices determine yield... Last year I planted 4 milk cup of sesame and I hervested 1 basin...

When u are Investing your money, u must reduce the risk to the lowest minimum.

First, cassava requires 50 to 100 kg of nitrogen, 65 to 80 kg of potassium and 10 to 20 kg of phosphorus, so running a soil test is important.

Secondly, you should plant jathropa round the farm, as it smell is highly repellent to cattle.... IITA is trying to develop a variety that repels cattle.

You must not go for waterlogged land.

SO now deduct all that cost you incurred before harvest, frombush clearing/land preparation to planting to wages or salaries to tractor to weedcontrol, everything u spent..lets have an idea of net profit. Please make provision for asset reduction too, because I remember we were taught In agric science then that the productivity of a land decreases with time, so account for little depreciation in your calculations of cost.

We have 1000kg in 1 tonne, so 36900kg divided by 1000kg will be 36.9 tonnes

Going by the current price in the market, 1 tonne of fresh cassava tuber is #65,000, that give us...... #2,398,5000
