Lagos - Nigerian preacher TB Joshua on Thursday broke his silence over a building collapse that killed 80 at his Lagos megachurch but denied lack of cooperation and stuck to his theory of possible aerial sabotage. The popular televangelist, known as "The Preacher" or "The Man of God" to his thousands of followers in Nigeria and around the world, also indicated that other overseas nationals were involved. South Africa's President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday said that 67 of his compatriots were killed when a guesthouse for foreign followers of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) came down last Friday. The death toll from the tragedy climbed after 10 more bodies were pulled from among the twisted metal and shattered masonry of the building on the sprawling SCOAN compound. Joshua had not directly commented on the deaths and had only published Bible quotations on his Facebook site and Twitter account. But in a statement he extended his sympathies to victims' families and described those who died as "martyrs of the Kingdom of God". "The pain of one is the pain of all. It is indeed a sad and painful moment for the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones," he said. "To all those who lost family members and loved ones, please accept our heartfelt commiserations." Joshua said "Nigerians, South African and citizens of other nations were affected" but did not specify which countries or say whether they were among the dead, 131 injured or both. South Africa's High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, said 17 of his compatriots were unaccounted for and the church had set up a hotline in Johannesburg for concerned relatives. "It (the death toll) can't all be South Africans," he told AFP. "There were also Nigerians who were working." Two children were pulled alive from the collapsed building but both their mother and father were among the missing, he added. "They were under the rubble together with their father. Their father kept them talking to each other," he said. Good Christians are good citizens TB Joshua inspires an almost fanatical devotion from his thousands of followers around the world, who are drawn to his services by claims of miracle-working and prophecies. But rescue workers have complained of a lack of cooperation from Joshua and the church authorities, which included preventing the emergency services from accessing the site until Sunday. The southwest coordinator of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) said SCOAN officials had not disclosed the identities and nationalities of those in the building at the time. Joshua rejected the lack of cooperation claims as "inaccurate". "Contrary to this, we want to categorically state that the church has provided assistance when and where required and continues to do so: good Christians are good citizens," he said. Engineers have suggested that the addition of extra floors on top of the existing building for foreign followers of the Pentecostal church overloaded the structure, causing the fatal collapse. On Wednesday, the Lagos State government ordered urgent structural checks of all buildings on the SCOAN site while NEMA said that rescue operations could wind up on Thursday. In South Africa, Zuma rejected criticism that his government was slow to respond to the tragedy. Joshua, whose followers include heads of state and top- level politicians such as Malawi's former president Joyce Banda, again suggested that a low-flying aircraft may have been to blame. "This incident was preceded by the appearance of a strange aircraft which flew very low over the building four times and then disappeared," he stated. "The church views this tragedy as part of an attack on The Synagogue Church Of All Nations and in particular Prophet TB Joshua. "In due course, God will reveal the perpetrators of this unfortunate tragedy."http://m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/TB-Joshua-breaks-silence-after-fatal-building-collapse-20140918 |

Beijing - Taking a cue from an American TV program, the Chinese city of Chongqing has created a smartphone sidewalk lane, seemingly offering a path for those too engrossed in messaging and tweeting to watch where they're going. But the property manager says it's intended to be ironic, to remind people that it's dangerous to tweet while walking the street. "There are lots of elderly people and children in our street, and walking with your cellphone may cause unnecessary collisions here," said Nong Cheng, the marketing official with Meixin Group, which manages the area in the city's entertainment zone. Meixin has marked a 50-meter stretch of pavement with two lanes: one that prohibits cellphone use next to one that allows pedestrians to use them, at their "own risk." Nong said the idea came from a similar stretch of pavement in Washington D.C. created by National Geographic Television in July as part of a behavior experiment. She said that pedestrians were not taking the new lanes seriously, but that many were snapping pictures of the signs and sidewalk. "Those using their cellphones of course have not heeded the markings on the pavement," she said. "They don't notice them."http://m.news24.com/nigeria/World/News/China-creates-its-first-no-cellphone-sidewalk-lane-20140915 |

Johannesburg - The South African Revenue Service confiscated $9.3m at Lanseria Airport, northwest of Johannesburg, from two Nigerians and an Israeli, it said on Sunday. "The passengers' luggage was searched after customs officials detected irregularities in the luggage," spokesperson Adrian Lackay said. "The money was detained as it was undisclosed/undeclared and above the prescribed legal limit for bringing cash into the country." The incident happened on Friday. He said the money was being kept safe by the SA Reserve Bank. The matter has been handed over to the police and the national investigations unit would investigate. National police spokesperson Solomon Makgale confirmed that the matter had been reported to the unit. He said the money was seized and the matter handed over to the Hawks. According to a local newspaper, the men were going to use the money to buy weapons. The passengers were reportedly acting on behalf of the Nigerian intelligence service, but this could not be confirmed by Nigerian authorities. The group also had documents confirming they were in South Africa to buy arms. It was unclear whether the Israeli passenger was an intelligence operative or an arms dealer, according to the report. The National Conventional Arms Control Committee, which approves permits for the import and export of weapons, was not aware of any applications made for such a transaction. The committee reportedly confirmed that it was aware of the incident but did not want to comment further.http://m.news24.com/nigeria/World/News/93m-confiscated-from-Nigerians-in-South-Africa-20140914 |
Lagos - The number of people killed in the collapse of a guest house under construction at the Lagos headquarters of Pastor T.B. Joshua church rose to 41 on Sunday, rescuers said, as they worked to clear the wreckage. The five-storey building in the Ikotun neighbourhood of Lagos collapsed on Friday, and Farinloye said some 130 people had been pulled out alive with varying degrees of injury. Local media showed a mound of flattened concrete and twisted steel wires at the compound belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations, which is headed by Prophet T.B. Joshua, who has followers across Africa and around the world. "We have 41 dead now," Ibrahim Farinloye, spokesman in Lagos for Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said. On Friday after the collapse, members of the church had at first prevented emergency officials from participating in the rescue, making it difficult to establish a toll for the dead and injured. But state rescuers were allowed in on Saturday. "We're still working at the site," said Farinloye, adding he expected the clear-up would extend into Monday. There was no immediate explanation for the collapse. Eemergency services officials said the lower two floors of the building located in the large church compound had already been operating as a guest house, and it appeared construction work was underway to add three more floors.http://m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/Deaths-from-TB-Joshua-accident-rises-to-41-20140914 |

We’ve heard of people divorcing over a sexless marriage, but divorcing over too much sex? You don’t hear that one every day.Apparently, one man was recently granted a divorce by a Mumbai family court because he could no longer deal with his wife’s “excessive and insatiable desire for sex. According to The Times Of India, the sex-fatigued husband first approached the court in January, claiming that his wife was “aggressive, stubborn and autocratic” and that she’d be harassing him for sex since they married in April 2012. The man told the court his wife forced medication on him to boast his sexual stamina and threatened to hook up with other men if she remained unfulfilled. Things got so bad, the husband had to be hospitalized for an uneasy stomach at one point. In the end, the wife failed to appear before the court, so the divorce was granted. (Meanwhile, we couldn’t be happier for the poor, put-upon husband. May he go on to have as little — or as much — non- chore-like, consensual sex as he’d like..http://nigeriacamera.net/man-divorces-wife-over-her-excessive-and-insatiable-desire-for-sex/ |
Russia is learning to live in a new harsh environment of U.S.-led economic sanctions and political confrontation with the United States. More than five months after the change of regime in Kiev, which ushered in a new era in Moscow’s foreign policy and its international relations, a rough outline of Russia’s new security strategy is emerging. It is designed for a long haul and will probably impact the global scene. The central assumption in that strategy is that Russia is responding to U.S. policies that are meant to box it in and hold it down—and back. The Kremlin absolutely could not ignore the developments in Ukraine, a country of utmost importance to Russia. The armed uprising in Kiev brought to power a coalition of ultranationalists and pro- Western politicians: the worst possible combination Moscow could think of. President Putin saw this as a challenge both to Russia’s international position and to its internal order. Taking up the challenge, however, meant a real and long-term conflict with the United States. Verbal opposition to U.S. global hegemony was not enough. Unlike the 2008 Georgia war, Ukraine was not an episode that could be safely localized and bracketed. Essentially, the current U.S.-Russian struggle is about a new international order. Sudan, a country of 38 million citizens (as at 2013), has only known peace for 11years (1972 – 1983) in her 58 years of gaining independence from the United Kingdom and Egypt. Of the 47 years of conflict, two civil wars have taken place and they are responsible for the loss of two and half million lives in a total of 40 years. The cause: religion. Despite seceding from the Christian South in 2011, the North has continued in its persecution of Christians and President Omar al-Bashir has not hidden his intention to make Sudan an Islamic state, even if it means ‘atrocious’ persecutions of Christians. Though a strict version of sharia law is in effect, the constitution still recognizes religious freedom; provided you don’t convert from Islam, meaning there’s a systemic violation of the freedom of religion. A prominent case in May, 2014, caused international outrage as a Sudanese court sentenced to death Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag death for apostasy (simply put – converting from Islam to Christianity). Meriam, 27, was raised a Christian despite her father being Muslim; and was detained in prison where she was delivered of her second child, a daughter. Her plight shed light on some of the practices of the Sudanese government; and she was finally able to leave the country, following her release from prison, after negotiations made by the Italian government.July 12, 2014, the al-Bashir regime’s ruthless campaign took a new twist by announcing through Shalil Abdullah, the minister for Guidance and Religious Endowments, that there would be a ban on the construction of new churches. Abdullah argued that there was no need to grant plots of land for new churches since the existing ones were enough. The general secretary of the Sudan Council of Churches, Rev. Kori Elramla Kori Kuku, said the government’s intentions were shocking and misleading. “We (Christians) have the right to have new plots of land and building of new churches,” he said. “We need the churches for the growing of Sudanese Christians.” The human rights organization, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, which works on behalf of persecuted Christians, also issued a statement, saying the continued practice of demolishing and confiscating church land constitutes a violation of the right of freedom of religion or belief; but will the Sudanese budge … History tells us, http://m.news24.com/nigeria/MyNews24/Sudan-bans-building-of-churches-20140914 |
