A Federal Government delegate at the ongoing National Conference, Chief Mike Ozekhome has proposed that the name Nigeria should be changed to ‘Airegin’. He made the proposal on Wednesday, while contributing to the debate on the report of the Committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government, co-chaired by retired General Ike Nwachukwu and Honourable Umaru Kumaila. The Edo State-born legal luminary argued that it was imperative to wash Nigeria of the colonial legacy saying that it was a colonial imposed name which should be changed to reflect originality, suggesting that the old National anthem, written by Mr Taiwo Akinwumi, and the old flag, which was designed with the rising sun on it should be reintroduced, as it is peculiar with all parts of the country. “I want to move that this conference should consider changing the name of the country to reflect our originality. The name Nigeria was a colonial imposition which must be corrected. The name was given to the country by Lady Flora Shaw who later became Lady Lugard,” he said. He added that the country was known formally as the Northern and Southern Protectorates before being changed to Nigeria, meaning Niger Area or areas within the River Niger by Lady Flora Shaw. He said: “The country was known formally as the Southern and Northern Protectorates before it was changed. It was changed because they said it was too long for them to pronounce.” He suggested that the name should be changed from Nigeria to ‘Airegin’ to make a clean break from the past. ‘Airegin’ was just gotten when you write the name Nigeria from ‘right to left.’ On the additional one state given to the South East geo-political zone, while disagreeing with a delegate representing Federal Government and Environmental activist, Mr Ledum Mitee, who opposed the state, Ozekhome said that he supported the additional state as it will integrate the zone into the system. He also lend his support to the Committee’s recommendation for States to serve as federating units stressing the need for states to have their own constitution to reflect their peculiarities. http://tribune.com.ng/confab/item/9681-confab-ozekhome-proposes-name-change-for-nigeria-wants-nigeria-renamed-airegin |
Santo Andre - Seven Germany players are suffering mild flu symptoms ahead of the quarter-final match against France on Friday, coach Joachim Loew said in a German radio interview without identifying the players. "Seven players have somehow come down with slight cases of the flu," Loew was quoted telling Germany's ARD radio. He said that most had "throat aches" but did not reveal their names. "As a result, it's too early to make any final decisions about the lineup," Loew added. Defender Mat Hummels missed Germany's round of 16 match against Algeria on Monday due to a fever. He said on Wednesday he had recovered and posted a picture of himself sitting on the beach. Reserve midfielder Christoph Kramer was suffering from a case of the chills on Wednesday and was the only player who did not take part in the training session, said assistant coach Andreas Koepke, who added all other players were fit and ready to travel to Rio de Janeiro for Friday's match Loew has said that the travel across Brazil and different climate zones for their four matches so far as well as matches in tropical heat, a heavy downpour and then in chilly Porto Alegre - along with air conditioning - had taken their toll. "I hope they're all doing well now," Loew said. He added: "It's not all that bad at the moment. I don't want to dramatise it." But Loew said that Hummels condition had actually deteriorated. "Mats Hummels suffered a negative setback on the second day," Loew said. Loew has come under heavy fire in Germany for his decision to put captain Philipp Lahm in midfield instead of at right back, where he has excelled for years. Loew was forced to put Lahm at right back late in the Algeria match due to injuries. http://m.news24.com/nigeria/Sport/WorldCup/German-team-hit-by-flu-20140703 |

Rio de Janeiro - An overpass in Brazil that was part of the World Cup infrastructure plan has collapsed onto vehicles below. The overpass in Cup host city Belo Horizonte collapsed Thursday afternoon. Local news media quote firefighters on the scene as saying at least one person has died and another 10 are injured. Live TV images showed what appeared to be a school bus and other vehicles trapped under the rubble. It's not immediately clear if people are trapped inside those vehicles. Calls to Belo Horizonte's fire department were not immediately returned. |

The nation appears to be once again heading on a collision course with world football governing body, FIFA following a ruling by a court in Plateau State that sacked Alhaji Aminu Maigari as the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Maigari was sacked alongside the entire board of the NFF. They were told by the court to stop parading themselves as the leadership of the football house in a case brought by Chairman of Nembe Football Club, Ebiakpo Baribote, who went to court to contest the decision by the NFF board to ban him for 15 years from all football related activities in the country. The injunction was delivered on Wednesday and asked the Sports Ministry to appoint the most senior civil servant at the football house in an acting capacity as acting Secretary General, pending the determination of the suite on July 11. Following the development, the Minister of Sports, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, who also received a copy of the judgement on Thursday, has appointed Lawrence Katiken as the acting Secretary General. However, FIFA is most likely going to demand that the status quo remains failure which could lead to the suspension of the country by the football body. http://newtelegraphonline.com/fresh-fifa-sanction-looms-as-court-sacks-maigari-nff-board/[color=]The nation appears to be once

just do this Fellow Nairalanders, On Sunday, the 22nd of June, at exactly 1:00PM, we lost access to Nairaland's server. I immediately asked our web host to fix the problem. They refused to discuss the situation with me until very early on Monday morning, when they told me that someone hacked their server management system and used it to gain access to our server. The hacker deleted everything on our server, including our backups which we kept in a separate disk on the same server. At that point, I knew that we had failed you in two ways: by relying on a web host which didn't follow security best practices, which led to their systems being hacked, and by storing our backups in a location where anyone who hacked our primary server would be able to access them and delete them. "Luckily", we recovered 8 years and 10 months of data out of the 9 years and 3 months of data that was lost, from a remote backup made in January. All topics and posts created in the last 5 months are gone. All users who registered within the last 5 months will have to register again. It's awful. The attackers probably downloaded our entire database including your usernames, email addresses, and password hashes. As a result of our use of hashing, salting, and key stretching, it won't be so easy for the attackers to steal your passwords if they are strong. However, we advice every Nairalander to please change his/her Nairaland password immediately. Please logout and then visit http:// www.nairaland.com/login to use the password reset form. You can recover your most important data using the technique below (we could not apply it automatically due to data consistency issues) 1) Search Google for the title of your thread, e.g. (title of thread site:nairaland.com) 2) Copy the URL of the page on Nairaland where the information used to reside from the search results, e.g. www.nairaland.com/123456/ title-of-thread 3) Search Google's cache for that URL, e.g. enter this into google: (cache:www.nairaland.com/ 123456/title-of-thread ) Here's how we plan to secure your data in the future: 1) We've moved away from the host that lost our data to a very reputable host which is less likely to get hacked. 2) We've started storing our backups in remote location(s) that are completely independent of our primary server. 3) We're doing a full review of all our operations in order to greatly improve security in every way that we can. 4) We're trying to set up comprehensive disaster recovery plans so that Nairaland will survive no matter what happens. Nairaland is no longer just Seun Osewa's lucrative hobby. It is a vital resource that Nigerians and corporate bodies rely on. It must be protected and kept alive at all costs. It deserves to be managed, not by one feeble individual, but by a robust enterprise staffed by professionals who are the best at what they do. A robust enterprise that can defend Nairaland against all threats. I will devote the rest of my year to building such an enterprise. If you had some advertising credit in your account before the attack, please send an email to the usual address so we can sort things out. Sincerely, Seun Osewa. PS: We will do everything within our power to ensure that people are able to re- register the usernames that they held before the incident |
