PoliticsAgain, Court Sends EFCC Boss To Kuje Prison For Contempt by Eva2000(op): 4:00pm On Feb 06, 2023
The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, has been committed to prison for disobeying court order.

The court also directed the Inspector-General of Police to effect Bawa’s arrest and remand him in Kuje prison for the next 14 days until he purges himself of the contempt.

Recall that an Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama, had on November 8, ordered the arrest and remanding of the EFCC boss at Kuje prison over contempt.

Justice R.O. Ayoola of the Kogi State High Court, in his judgement on Monday, granted the application for committal to prison of the EFCC chairman for disobeying a court ruling delivered on November 30, 2022, wherein the EFCC chairman was directed to produce the applicant in the case, Ali Bello.

Ali Bello had dragged Bawa to court for arresting and detaining him illegally, with the court ruling in his favour, but the EFCC arraigned him for alleged money laundering three days after the ruling.

The EFCC’s applications for setting aside and stay of execution of the ruling were refused for want of merit.

The Court had, in Form 49, Order IX, Rule 13, marked: “HCL/697M/2022” and titled: “Notice to Show Cause Why Order of Committal Should not be Made,” asked the EFCC Chairman to appear before it on January 18, 2022, to explain why he should not be jailed for flouting the order given on December 12, 2022, in a case filed by Ali Bello against EFCC and Bawa, as the 1st and 2nd respondents, respectively.

The court ordered that the EFCC and Bawa be served the motion of notice together with Form 49 by substituted means.

The court had declared the arrest and detention of the applicant in the face of a subsisting Court order made by a Court of competent jurisdiction and without a warrant of arrest “or being informed of the offence for which he was arrested” as unlawful, unconstitutional, and in contravention of the personal liberty and dignity of human person guaranteed under Chapter IV of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
The court had also ordered the respondents to tender an apology to the applicant in a national newspaper and awarded N10 million compensation for him.

The Form 49, issued on December 15, 2022, and addressed to Bawa read, “Take notice that the Applicant will on the 18th day of January 2023 at the hour of 9 o clock in the forenoon or so soon thereafter, apply to this Court for an order for your committal to prison for having disobeyed the order of this Court made on 12th day of December 2022 that:

“That arrest and detention of the Applicant on the 29th November 2022 by the 1st and 2nd Respondents in the face of a subsisting Court Order made by a Court of competent jurisdiction and without a warrant of arrest or being informed of the offence for which he was arrested is unlawful, unconstitutional and contravenes the Applicant’s right to personal liberty and dignity of human person guaranteed under Chapter IV of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and Articles 5 and 6 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

“Perpetual injunction restraining the Respondents, their agents, servants, privies, or however called from further arrest, detention, harassment and intimidation of the Applicant.

“An order directing the Respondents to tender an apology to the Applicant in any of the National Daily having nationwide coverage for the illegal detention and harassment of the Applicant.

“An Award of the sum of Ten Million Naira as general damages jointly and severally against the Respondents for the unlawful detention and harassment of the Applicant.”

This followed an application by Counsel to Ali Bello, S. A. Abass.

PoliticsHow Wike Deceived G5 Into Believing He Was Supporting Obi – Bwala by Eva2000(op): 9:32am On Feb 04, 2023
A spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, Daniel Bwala, has said Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State deceived his G5 colleagues.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that according to Bwala, Wike gave the impression that he was supporting Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party, but was secretly backing Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been enmeshed in crisis after the party’s national convention in May 2022 where former Vice President Atiku Abubakar defeated 12 other aspirants, including Wike to emerge the party presidential candidate for 2023 elections.

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the primary, a group of five PDP governors (G5) demanded the replacement of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu with a southerner to correct “regional imbalance” in the PDP since Messrs Atiku and Ayu are both northerners.

Apart from Wike, other governors who are members of the G5 are Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Seyi Makinde (Oyo).

The G5 governors, who were appointed into the PDP presidential campaign council, withdrew their membership, boycotted its inauguration and shunned PDP presidential campaign activities.

“He (Wike) made them (his colleagues) believe that he was behind Peter Obi. So, he can’t openly come out now to declare support for the APC candidate because the other four governors do not want Tinubu,” Bwala told Punch in a report published on Saturday
PoliticsNigeria Will “sink” If Tinubu Or Atiku Gets To Power – Bishop Adeoye NEWS By Raj by Eva2000(op): 4:52pm On Feb 03, 2023
…….Insist Obi Is God’s Choice For The Nation

Three weeks before the general polls, a Pentecostal Bishop has warned that it will be a great error for the mantle of leadership to fall into the hand of either Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of All Progressives Congress (APC) or Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying any of those two candidates will “sink” and “bury” Nigeria.

Bishop Seun Adeoye who is the founder of Sufficient Grace and Truth Ministry and also the Spokesman of the World Bishops Council in Africa in a statement in Osogbo on Friday stated that none of the candidates going by divine course possesses the grace to lead Nigeria to peace and prosperity.

In the statement titled “When The Righteous Rule”, the cleric reinstated his earlier stand that the Labour Party’s candidate Mr. Peter Obi is God’s choice for Nigeria.

“Even if you condemn me to death by guillotine, I always will speak out about what God told me. Nobody should be moved by the paid ‘supporter of APC’ and the ‘jeunjeun’ crowds milling around those candidates or by their numerous supporters whose gods are their bellies. One thing is sure: God is not in their noises.

“Although if by whatever means any of them get to the office, they will try to move this nation forward but they will fail because they will be occupying a seat not divinely prepared for any of them. And sadly they will sink and bury Nigeria.

“When the Scriptures in Proverbs 14 verse 34 says “Righteousness Exulteth a Nation”; righteousness here means mercy, justice, and equity. And anywhere these are missing such a nation will definitely go down and down

“Am I Igbo man? No. But the cries of the downtrodden Igbo natives have reached the ears of God and if they are denied their right to govern Nigeria God will furiously fight for them in manners that will bring untold hardship and anguish upon this country.

“Although, Peter Obi’s presidency will be very tough at the beginning but because he is in God’s agenda for Nigeria, divine assistance will come to him from above and this Peter will feed the Lord’s sheep and become a rock upon which the new Nigeria will be built. His government shall bring unity and progress and open doors for the nation’s prosperity with overflowing joy everywhere”.

Bishop Adeoye extolled former Nigeria’s president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the Anglican Bishop Emeritus, Rt. Rev. Bolanle Gbonigi and many other elderly Nigerians and men of God whose eyes have been opened to see this picture and who have spoken out in support of Obi without fear.

He urged Nigerians to allow peaceful elections, support Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and vote according to God’s will for the nation in the presidential election not minding tribe and religion.
PoliticsTinubu: Sokoto Residents Allege What APC Paid Each Person To Vote On February 25 by Eva2000(op): 11:11am On Feb 03, 2023
POLITICSTinubu: Sokoto Residents Allege What APC Paid Each Person To Vote On February 25th Friday, February 3rd, 2023 at 9:50 AMBy Richard Ogunsile
Kindly share this story:
Tinubu: Sokoto Residents Allege What APC Paid Each Person To Vote On February 25th
All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, allegedly gave money to Sokoto State residents so they could vote for him in the February 25th election, Naija News learnt.
A state resident, Mallam Ango, who reportedly spoke with SaharaReporters, claimed APC stakeholders in the state, especially in Wamakko Local Government Area, assured each person of N2,000 to vote for Tinubu during the presidential election.

According to him, vote-buying was a usual practice in their community. Stating that the people are already used to demanding money before voting for any candidate during the general elections.

The news platform quoted Ango as saying the amount promised them for a vote for Tinubu was twice what they were paid to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2019 general elections.

According to him, they were given N1000 to vote for Buhari in 2019 and now N2000 to vote in Tinubu. Ango reportedly said the increment could be due to the competition the APC now faced in the state from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sokoto Gov, Tambuwal Alleges Political Parties Amassing Funds to Buy Votes
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCO), Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State, had alleged in January 2023 that some political parties were amassing money to buy votes ahead of next month’s elections.

Naija News recalls that Tambuwal made the allegation during a campaign event in the Binji local government area of his state.

The PDP chieftain said the opposition party in the state, which he didn’t mention was plotting to use the money stolen by its members while in the service of the country to craftily take away voters cards from eligible voters.

“I also want to call on the people of Sokoto State that I have got information that those in the other party are going round collecting people’s PVCs. Do not give them your voters card.

“They know that, God willing, they have failed the elections, that is why they are trying to collect your PVCs. If they collect your voters card, they won’t return them to you. And, on voting day, it would be difficult for you to vote without your PVCs.

“So, you should not allow anyone to deceive you. They are amassing money for this purpose. They have brought you insecurity and now they want to buy your votes,” Tambuwal urged the citizens.

He added: “They did not, as people who hold positions in the federal government, provide security operatives with the wherewithal to protect your lives and property, but they want to use the money they stole to disenfranchise you.

“If they bring the money and you are greedy, collect it from them and vote for the PDP at all levels.”
EducationPoliticscall Me A Bastard If You Don’t End School In Eight Years – Tinubu Tells by Eva2000(op): 1:32am On Feb 03, 2023
The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu was in Osun State on Thursday for his presidential campaign.
Tinubu, while addressing supporters of the APC at the APC presidential campaign rally on Thursday in Osogbo, spoke on his plan for education.

The former Governor of Lagos State, who spoke in the Yoruba Language in a video spotted online, said Nigerians who have not gained admission and the ones who have gained admission can call him a bastard if they stay in their institutions for more than eight years.

The appropriate years for higher institutions is four years, while courses like Engineering, Agriculture and some others spend five years in school.

The APC presidential candidate probably had a plan of saying four years and not eight years.

Speaking during his presidential campaign, Tinubu said, “for those that have not gained admission and the ones that are in school, you can call me a bastard if you spend more than eight years in school, you would use eight years to study.”

PoliticsAtiku Berates Tinubu For "Hypocritical Criticism Of APC" by Eva2000(op): 8:34pm On Feb 01, 2023
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has berated the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, for his hypocritical attempts to extricate himself from the many failures of the ruling party.

Atiku’s Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said this in a statement, in Abuja, on Wednesday.

Shaibu said this while reacting to Tinubu’s latest attack against President Muhammadu Buhari at the APC Presidential Campaign rally held in Calabar, on Tuesday.

Atiku’s media aide had quoted Tinubu as saying during the rally in the Cross River State capital that, “Today, they moved the exchange rate from ₦200 to ₦800. If they had repaired it, if they had arrested this, we wouldn’t be where we are today, we would be greater. They don’t know the way, they don’t know how to think, they don’t know how to do it.”

A few days ago in Abeokuta, Atiku said that Tinubu had accused President Muhammadu Buhari of incompetence especially with regards the scarcity of the new naira notes and the petrol situation in the country.

However, Shaibu quoted Atiku as saying that Tinubu was not only a “pernicious and lubricious hypocrite” but also “a death-defying politician who is trying to be clever by half.”

He added that it is funny that Tinubu, who proudly held the position of national leader of the APC for the last eight years, could throw Buhari under the bus “in his failed and desperate quest for power.”

Shaibu recalled that Tinubu had before the election season even defended the exchange rate policy of the Buhari administration when a group of youths led by Moremi Ojudu led a protest to his Lagos home on February 9, 2017, when the dollar hit ₦500.

He said Ms Ojudu, the daughter of Babafemi Ojudu, a special adviser on political affairs to Buhari, had challenged Tinubu over the declining of the naira but Tinubu was seen on video telling protesting youths that, “I am not worried about the exchange rate because your salary should be in Naira and you are not an importer. Maybe that is even teaching us a lesson to be dependent on our domestic product.”

Atiku was also quoted as saying that “Tinubu has disingenuously been criticising President Buhari, trying to extricate himself from the failures of the APC which he had vigorously defended in the last eight years. Nigerians must not be deceived by this charlatan who is now posing to be on the side of the masses.

“Tinubu is the APC, mind, soul and body. He was the national leader of the party even before Buhari became the Presidential candidate. Is it possible for a snail to deny its own shell? Tinubu needs to give up this rascally act and take ownership of the failure of his party in the last eight years. His latest outburst is nothing but diversionary tactics,” he said.

Atiku described Tinubu as a deceitful politician who likes to throw his friends under the bus whenever there is a little challenge.

He said: “When some disgruntled APC leaders were against Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s ambition, Tinubu threw Ambode under the bus. He ensured Ambode never returned despite entreaties from President Buhari, Governor Atiku Bagudu and several others. Curiously, he is now taking credit for Ambode’s achievements including the transformation of the Oshodi district.

“This is the sort of person Tinubu is. He is a user who throws his friends under the bus when things get tough. Nigerians have been facing petrol scarcity for nearly a year. Why is Tinubu just speaking about it now that elections are a few days away?

“Why is Tinubu just attacking Buhari’s policies, many of which have been in place for years? In any case, the previous Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, said at the 65th Tinubu symposium on March 28, 2017 that it was Tinubu’s economic policy that the Buhari regime was using. So, why is Tinubu all of a sudden trying to distance himself from his own failed policy?

“As elections approach and the reality slowly dawns on Tinubu, he will increase his attacks against the President in order to distance himself from the failure that his party has become. Nigerians must not fall for this trick.

“Ahmad Lawan, whom Tinubu openly supported, is the current Senate President. His lackey and godson, Femi Gbajabiamila is the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Both of them, who are proud rubber stamps, have been approving all of Buhari’s loans without question which further weakened the currency. Where was Tinubu when this was happening?

“Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who was Tinubu’s commissioner for eight years and his proxy at the Presidential Villa, also headed Buhari’s economic team and chaired the National Economic Council by virtue of his position as Vice-President. Where was Tinubu when policies were being implemented? Why didn’t he speak up?

“Tinubu should focus on his failing campaign and stop trying to deceive Nigerians who are on the receiving end of his failed party’s misrule.”

Politics2023: ‘what A Dead End’ – Dele Momodu Reacts To Wike’s Purported Plan To Deliver by Eva2000(op): 8:25pm On Feb 01, 2023
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has reacted to the purported plan of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, to deliver 25% votes for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.
Naija News recalls that Wike had in December 2022 promised to publicly name his preferred presidential candidate in January 2023 ahead of the February poll but failed after raising the hope of many Nigerians.

A former Nigerian journalist residing in Pennsylvania, Jackson Ude, in a tweet on Tuesday, alleged that Wike is afraid of suspension and has directed his caucus and local government chairmen to support Tinubu.

He tweeted: “A coward Gov. Nyesom Wike, after a meeting, has told his caucus and local government chairmen in the state that he is not publicly naming his preferred presidential candidate. He directed them to work for Bola Tinubu of the APC and ensure he get 25%. Wike fears suspension.”

Reacting via his social media page, Dele Momodu, described the report as an anticlimactic case, saying that Wike could not boldly announce his favourite candidate after threatening for many months.

The former presidential aspirant noted that securing 25% voted for Tinubu is still small to help him win against Atiku.

He added that the PDP flagbearer would win the election and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi and the state gubernatorial candidate, Tonye Cole, will take the credit.

He wrote: “This news is such an anticlimactic case… After threatening for so many months, Governor Nyesom Wike could not announce his favorite and favored Presidential candidate GIDIGBA…

“Even if chief Bola Tinubu gets 25 percent in Rivers State, it is too little to help him win against H.E Atiku Abubakar the only certified National candidate, and former Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi and Mr Tonye Cole will take the credit… What a dead end!!

easier it is to track.”

Osinbajo noted that “so much money can be spent without it being tracked” under the current election financing practices in the country.

“With cash transactions, it is still difficult to seriously control election financing,” he said.

Andrews said the Observer Mission would monitor the general election and hoped for a peaceful and fair electoral process.

Also, The European Union (EU) has promised to assess the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS) and other technologies to be deployed for this year’s general election.

The EU also announced that about 100 observers would be deployed to monitor this year’s general election across the country.

The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Chief Observer Barry Andrews said these during the launch of the mission yesterday in Abuja.

He said: “For the first time in Nigeria, the mission has a dedicated Election Technology Analyst who is assessing the use of technologies, especially the verification of voters and the transmission of results. A Media Analyst and a Social Media Analyst are also undertaking an assessment of the role of the traditional media, as well as social media and digital communication during the process.

The FCT judiciary restrained the IGP and his men from taking any action against.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba and three of his officers are to face contempt charges before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) over their continued disobedience and disregard to the lawful order of the Court.
Recall: The court had on November 29 sentenced the IGP to three months in prison for disobeying a court order. However, voided the sentence in December, 2022.

The court gave the IGP and order: A High Court of the FCT judiciary restrained the IGP and his men from taking any action against a litigant, Abubakar Umar Shagari, pending the resolution of issues being handled in court.

What IGP did: However, the police men, especially, invaded the residence of the said Abubakar Umar Shagari in Sokoto on Monday, January 23, 2023.

The respondents ransacked the entire building and arrested the aged mother, two wives and two children of the plaintiff and had since hauled them into unlawful custody.

What you should know: The police acts only with the approval of the IGP.
PoliticsGov Masari Says Obasanjo Can't Influence His Own Family To Vote For Obi by Eva2000(op): 8:34am On Jan 30, 2023
Masari believes Obasanjo’s endorsement of Obi carries no weight.
Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State believes the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo does not have any political influence to canvass votes for Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
He said the political credentials of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) supersede that of the former President.

Masari said this in an interview with TVC while responding to a question on the relevance of Obasanjo’s endorsement of Obi.

Recall that in his letter to Nigerians on Sunday, January 1, 2023, Obasanjo said Obi is the most capable hand to lead Nigeria after President Muhammadu Buhari.

The former President described Obi as his mentee, adding that the former Anambra State Governor had an edge over other contestants in the presidential election race.

But Governor Masari believes Obasanjo’s endorsement of Obi carries no weight.

According to him, Obasanjo cannot convince members of his family to vote for Obi let alone convince the nation.

“Obasanjo cannot sway members of his family let alone sway the nation. Everybody has served, Let’s bring their credentials of service to their people; to the country and be honest and objective, who has more credentials? But for me, when you put them on the table, I will pick Asiwaju”, he said.

The governor also accused the Labour Party of building its campaign on religion and ethnic sentiments.
“The action which the Labour Party is taking is built along ethnoreligious considerations. Beyond the social media, beyond the media hype, who are your people on ground in the north?” Masari asked.
Politics2023: Tinubu’s Camp Worries Over Lukewarm Attitude Of Buhari Presidencypublished by Eva2000(op): 7:30am On Jan 30, 2023
In less than one month to the 2023 presidential election, there are still indications that all may not be well between the presidency and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.

Despite being members of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari, his Vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and other members of his cabinet appear to be showing lackadaisical attitudes towards the presidential ambition of the former Lagos State Governor.

Since he started his campaign a few months ago, the presidency has not shown a serious level of commitment towards ensuring the victory of Tinubu and the APC. While Buhari has attended very few campaign rallies, Osinbajo has totally abstained.

Many are yet to understand why those at the Aso Rock Villa, including some leaders of the APC, are not really interested in whether Tinubu wins or not. In fact, there are rumours that some governors are surreptitiously hobnobbing with the opposition ahead of the general election.

As the Jagaban could no longer pretend about the unfavourable development, he was compelled to let the cat out of the bag during his recent visit to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, exposing the level of infighting tearing the party apart underneath.

Tinubu had tackled the Buhari-led government over the new naira notes redesign and the lingering fuel scarcity, alleging that some individuals were sabotaging his presidential ambition through the two developments.

According to Tinubu, they were deliberately hoarding petrol and naira notes, a situation he speculated was to affect his chances negatively.

“With our PVC, we will wrest power from them. Even if they said there is no fuel, we will trek. They are full of hanky panky. They are cleverly creating fuel scarcity. Let the fuel continue to be scarce, they know where they hoard it.

“You hoard the naira, you hoard fuel, but we will vote and we will win. You can even change the ink on the naira notes, we will win. They sabotage fuel supply. Whether they supply fuel or not, we will go and vote. This is a superior revolution. You know me. We are going to win,” Tinubu said in Yoruba.

After making the statement, the media space was awash with comments from the opposition, who saw Tinubu’s words as an attack on President Buhari and his party, the APC.

The moment he realised the statement could breed chaos within the party, Tinubu and his campaign team immediately embarked on damage control, saying the presidential candidate was actually attacking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and not the APC-led Federal Government.

But, many are seeking to know if the PDP is in charge of the Ministry of Petroleum or President Buhari. They also want to know if the Central Bank of Nigeria is under the control of the PDP or the Federal Government. The answer to this is clear enough to know who Tinubu was referring to during his campaign in Abeokuta.

The question on the lips of some Nigerians is, why is the presidency less concerned about Tinubu’s presidential race?

Buhari’s anointed candidate

Before the APC primary, there were indications that President Buhari had an anointing candidate among those eyeing the presidential ticket. Apart from Osinbajo, a sizable number of Buhari’s kitchen cabinet members, his allies and others, were in the race for the ticket.

Before the primary, Buhari had met with governors of the party, telling them to allow him choose his successor the same way they choose theirs.

Buhari told the governors: “In keeping with the established internal policies of the party and as we approach the convention in a few days, I wish to solicit the reciprocity and support of the Governors and other stakeholders in picking my successor, who would fly the flag of our party for election into the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023.

“We gave governors re-election tickets or an opportunity to pick their successors; allow me to pick my successor.”

Though Buhari did not name his choice, but as Tinubu realised that he was not likely to be the anointed candidate of Buhari, he began to talk tough.

The Abeokuta comment

In the buildup to the June 2022 APC presidential primary, Tinubu was in Abeokuta to seek the support of party delegates. At the Presidential Lodge in Ibara Housing Estate, where he met party leaders, Tinubu went back memory lane to recount how he helped Buhari to power after the former Army General had cried on live television.

He also said he was the one who nominated Osinbajo to be Buhari’s running mate after Bukola Saraki kicked against the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Osinbajo, at that time, was also contesting the APC ticket with Tinubu, the main reason he was being described as a “betrayer” in the Tinubu camp.

“He tried the first time and failed. He tried a second time and failed. He tried a third time and failed. He even cried on television that he will never run for president again. I went to meet him and told him this is not a crying matter: ‘we will support you and you will be president’. If not for me, he wouldn’t have become the president,” Tinubu said in Yoruba.

His comment was said to have angered the President and his appointees, who replied Tinubu, telling him not to claim he was the one who single-handedly made Buhari president.

A statement by a presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, partly read: “There are those who advised the president to run again; those who decided to build a political party – the APC – that could finally be the political vehicle capable of delivering victory where all other opposition parties and alliances before it had failed.

“Those decisions may have been agreed upon by a few. But they were delivered by thousands and voted for by tens of millions. No one can or should claim to have made this possible.”

It was believed that Tinubu’s angry comment in Abeokuta in June helped him in getting the APC ticket, as it caused the president to steer clear of whatever happened at the APC convention.

However, it is left to be seen if the latest Abeokuta comment from Tinubu would also earn him a positive action from the presidency

The Lagos State government on Saturday said security agencies will find and prosecute the hoodlums who attacked the convoy of Abdul-Azeez Adediran (Jandor), governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the coming 2023 election in the state.

In a statement by Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, sent to POLITICS NIGERIA, the government said it was “shocked” by the video of a group of thugs shooting in broad daylight in Surulere.

Three persons were reportedly killed, while others sustained various degree of injuries when supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and the PDP engaged in violent clash during the Jandor’s political campaign in Surulere area of Lagos State on Friday.

But the Lagos government said the hoodlums are “henchmen of the PDP”.

“Security agencies are investigating the video, which has gone viral on the social media. We believe they will fish out and prosecute the evil actors, who are believed to be henchmen of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“We condemn this savagery that has portrayed our state, the safest in Nigeria, in a bad light. That is not who we are; we are civilized and cultured.

“Following advice from competent sources, including elders and respectable Lagosians, we will henceforth shun any forum that may require us being together with PDP and its agents of violence.

“Consequently, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu regrets to announce that he will not be participating at The Platform Governorship Debate of January 29, 2023.

“The Governor holds Pastor Poju Oyemade and the Covenant Christian Church family in high esteem and cherishes future opportunities to engage the congregation and render accounts of his stewardship to them as integral parts of the Lagos electorate.

“We will never be found in the company of those to whom the lives of innocent Lagosians mean nothing. Mr Sanwo-Olu won’t share a podium with them,”
the statement by Omotoso reads.

PoliticsOrtom, Ikpeazu, Ugwuanyi Inaugurate Peter Obi Campaign Team As Atiku’s Men Adopt by Eva2000(op): 2:16pm On Jan 28, 2023
To avoid sanction for anti-party activities, the G5 governors have reportedly instructed their loyalists to begin ‘underground’ work for their preferred presidential candidate ahead of next month’s general election.
Naija News reports that the G5 governors – Nyesom Wike of Rivers, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, and Samuel Ortom of Benue – have refused to back the presidential campaign of Atiku Abubakar.

The five aggrieved governors have demanded the resignation or removal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, as a condition for supporting the party’s presidential campaign.

Although the governors are believed to be working for two rival candidates, their inability to agree on which particular candidate to support, it was gathered, is partly responsible for the low spate activities in their ranks in recent times.

According to The PUNCH, Atiku’s loyalists in Benue State, including former governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam, were busy reaching out to party faithful in their strongholds to drum up support for him.

An associate of the governor, who pleaded anonymity, said Suswam and Professor Iyorwuese Hagher had been doing a lot for Atiku since Ortom made his position clear that he was not going to support the PDP presidential candidate.

He said: “Suswam addressed stakeholders from Zone A recently, and Iyorwuese has been talking with his kinsmen. They are doing it in such a way as not to offend Ortom. They are friends with the governor, but they are also careful not to overdo things. As a result, there is a lack of statewide coordination.”

According to the source, Ortom has also instructed his foot soldiers to work for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

“Governor Ortom has already inaugurated an Obi team using his most trusted aides and allies. Former governorship aspirant, Prof Dennis Tyavyar, is chairman of the group. He was Commissioner for Education under Ortom before he stepped down to contest the governorship election,” he added.

The publication stated that Governors Ikpeazu and Ugwuanyi are rooting for Obi, using their foot soldiers to work for his ambition in the South-East.

In Rivers State, a former PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, is leading the pro-Atiku support base alongside a former governor of the state, Celestine Omehia, ex-Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara, and an erstwhile federal lawmaker, Lee Maeba.

Speaking with The PUNCH, the Director General of ‘House to House Campaign for Atiku Abubakar and Ifeanyi Okowa’ in Borno State, Mustapha Shehu, said: “The House to House campaign will definitely break not only the G-5 governors’ hold on their states, but will also pose a significant threat to incumbent non-PDP governors.

“The Borno House to House has proved to be a check on the Wike-sponsored PDP stalwarts, including some in the state Executive. It has also positioned Atiku as the candidate to beat in the state despite the APC governor and the APC presidential running mate, Kashim Shettima.”
PoliticsAbia APC Carpets Factional Guber Candidate For Presidential Campaign Violence by Eva2000(op): 5:57pm On Jan 27, 2023
The All Progressives Congress, APC, has berated the factional governorship candidate of the party in Abia State, Ikechi Emenike, over the recent acts of violence that erupted during the electioneering campaign tour of the state by the APC presidential flagbearer, Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

The party also insisted the civil disturbance which heralded the recently-held APC presidential campaigns and rallies in the state capital, has further justified the existing lawsuit instituted against those who had allegedly plotted to impose an unpopular candidate on party members and the Abia people, against Uche Ogah, the democratically-elected flagbearer of the APC for the March 11 governorship election.

Violent clashes ensued between the warring factions of the Abia chapter of the APC as scores of party members and supporters who attended Tinubu’s presidential campaign rally in Umuahia township stadium were injured.

However, Offor Okorie, the Publicity Secretary of the APC in Abia State, while addressing journalists in Umuahia on Friday applauded the courage of notable APC leaders in the state to boycott the recent party functions hosted by the splinter group.

Okorie saluted the courage of APC leaders who showed solidarity with Dr Uche Ogah by intentionally staying out of the APC presidential rally organised by Ikechi Emenike who “is illegally parading himself as Abia APC governorship candidate.”

According to him, the APC leaders in Abia State- including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Hon Sam Onuigbo, Chief B.B Apugo, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, Dr Chris Akomas, Nyerere Anyim, Prince Paul Ikonne and Hon Stanley Ohajiruka – didn’t attend the sham rally and this “has shown the world that Ikechi Emenike is on his own.”

The Abia APC spokesman also reaffirmed the stand of the state leadership of the party on the concluded direct gubernatorial primary elections conducted by the APC national leadership in Abia, which elected the past Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, as the APC gubernatorial candidate in the state for the March 2023 governorship elections.

DAILY POST also recalls that Ogah was declared the winner of the party’s gubernatorial primary elections after he polled 141,952 votes to beat his closest rival, Paul Ikonne who scored 27,054.

Other gubernatorial aspirants include, Chief Ikechi Emenike who polled 9,446, Emeka Atuma with 7,429, Obinna Oriaku with 5,553, Alex Otti scored 2,41, and Daniel Eke who got 1,953 at the keenly contested direct primaries.
PoliticsArmed Herders Operating Like Militia Wing Of APC- Ortom by Eva2000(op): 8:20am On Jan 27, 2023
get power, Benue can go up in flames. A political party that turns to accuse the people of the State it hopes to govern lacks humanity and the conscience to lead.

”APC has never condemned the genocide Fulani herders have visited on Benue State in nearly a decade. Leaders of the party are often quick to jump to the defence of the killer herders whenever people are attacked in parts of the State, with the armed herders operating like a militia wing of the party. The opposition party has never shown empathy towards victims of the humanitarian crisis in the State. There is no evidence that they have taken relief materials to any of the IDP camps, even once in the last five years. The only time a delegation of the party visited the camp located in Daudu was before the 2019 elections with the sole purpose of campaigning for votes.

Nigeria’s past presidents and the inflation rates under their administrations

Nigeria’s past presidents
Ahead of next month’s presidential election, Nairametrics decided to analyse Nigeria’s past and present presidents based on the inflation rates during their administrations.

One of the main macroeconomic problems that have bedevilled Nigeria over the years is the rising cost of goods and services, coupled with other socio-economic doldrums. The level of inflation in the country is often used as a metric to assess the performance of an administration, seeing as inflation affects every member of society.

Over the years, Nigeria’s inflationary pressure has been tied to food insecurity, depreciation of the exchange rate, and oil price volatility amongst others. However, despite changes in leaders, policies, and fiscal direction, the high inflation has remained unabated.

Past presidents and their administrations: Nigeria started its fourth republic in 1999, after several attempts to restore the country to democracy, which had failed due to a military coup and junta. However, since the start of the fourth republic, Nigeria has maintained democracy for almost 24 years.

Since the beginning of the current democracy, Nigeria has had four democratically elected presidents between 1999 and to date.
Specifically, Olusegun Obasanjo ruled between June 1999 and May 2007. Meanwhile, Musa Yar’Adua followed during a short stint between June 2007 and April 2010.
Ebele Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as Nigeria’s president on 6th May 2010, following the death of Yar’Adua and remained at the helm of the affair until May 2015, before losing the elections to the current president, Muhammadu Buhari.
Nigeria is now due for another president, who will determine the direction of the Nigerian economy for the next four years, at a time when the economy is bedevilled by a high inflation rate, slow economic growth, rising unemployment, insecurity, depreciating exchange rate, huge intellectual flight, high-interest rate, amongst others.

Below is a highlight of past Nigerian presidents and the level of inflation recorded during their administration, with attention to the entry and exit rate.

Olusegun Obasanjo (1999 – 2007) – 12.3%
Between June 1999 and May 2007, Nigeria recorded an average inflation rate of 12.3%, with an entry rate of 8.28% and a closing rate of 4.64% in May 2007.

During the eight years of Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria recorded its highest inflation rate in August 2005, after the consumer price index surged by 28.21%, before moderating back to single digits.
During his tenure as president, Obasanjo introduced N100, N200, N500, and N1000 denominations of the local currency into the economy, which is argued to have fuelled inflationary pressure.
Meanwhile, the Obasanjo administration was bedevilled by high foreign debts, increased poverty levels, and ethnic crises. The cumulative inflation rate over the period stood at 143.5% as the CPI surged from 31 to 75.4 index points.
In the same vein, his administration coincided with the global great recession, which affected the global financial market leading to several job losses and economic downturns.
Musa Yar’Adua (2007 – 2010) – 11%
During Musa Yar’Adua’s administration between 2007 and 2010, Nigeria recorded an average inflation rate of 11%. The late president took over the presidency in May 2007 following a 4.64% inflation but saw inflationary pressure gallop to 15.04% before he died.

News continues after this ad

His administration was however marred by high insecurity in the Niger Delta and insurgency in the northern regions of the country, which almost brought the nation to its knees, with several reported cases of kidnappings of foreign expatriates in the south and mass killings in the north.
The highest rate during his administration was recorded in February 2010 at 15.65%. Meanwhile, the cumulative inflation rate during the period stood at 40.3%, as the consumer price index closed at 105.7 index points in April 2010.
Goodluck Jonathan (2010 – 2015) – 10.22%
Good luck Ebele Jonathan inherited a high inflation rate from his predecessor, where he also played the role of the vice. However, during his six years as the president of the largest African economy, an average inflation rate of 10.22% was recorded.

His entry rate was 15.04% but saw it decline to 9% at the end of his tenure while operating under similar macro and socio-economic conditions as his predecessor.
During the period, Nigeria also endured massive killings in the north by the Boko Haram insurgent group, although with a decline in the activities of the militants in the Niger Delta region, thanks to the Amnesty Programme established by the previous administration.
In the period under Goodluck Jonathan, the cumulative inflation rate stood at 62.3%. The CPI closed at 171.6 index points as of May 2015.
Muhammadu Buhari (2015 – 2022) – 14.52%
Nigeria experienced an average inflation rate of 14.52% between June 2015 and December 2022, recording a 17-year high of 21.34% in November 2022, during a period characterized by high food prices, movement restrictions, plummeting oil prices as an eventual surge in oil prices, high currency in circulation, huge arbitrage in the FX market amongst others.

The crude oil crisis in 2016 coupled with the transition from the fixed FX regime to a flexible regime by the CBN also had a significant impact on Nigeria’s inflation numbers, effectively bringing the rate to a double-digit, which it has maintained so far.
Buhari inherited an economy suffering from an inflation rate of 9%, but is currently trailing an almost 17-year high of 21.34% recorded in December 2022.
During this administration, the CBN has increased the monetary policy rate multiple times to tame the rising cost of goods, which has proven less effective, with cost-push inflation ravaging the economy and crippling the profitability of businesses.
So far, the cumulative inflation rate between May 2015 and December 2022 stood at 191% with the CPI currently at 499.4 index points.

Finally: Based on the analysis by Nairalytics, the research arm of Nairametrics, the current administration of Muhammadu Buhari has recorded the highest average inflation rate. This is contrary to the assertion of Festus Keyamo, the spokesperson for the presidential campaign council of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Festus Keyamo during an interview on Arise TV stated that Nigeria recorded its worst inflation under the administration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo and his vice, Atiku Abubakar.
However, findings show that the current administration with an average inflation rate of 14.52% is the highest compared to other past presidents, however, followed by Obasanjo’s regime with an average rate of 12.3%.
It is also worth noting that in terms of annual rate, the highest since the fourth republic was recorded in 2001 during Obasanjo’s tenure.
PoliticsThose Planning To Win Rivers Should Forget It- Wike by Eva2000(op): 10:57am On Jan 26, 2023
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has told those planning to deal with him if they win the forthcoming presidential election to perish the idea.

He described their threat as empty, saying God would not allow them access to the Aso Rock.

The governor said his political crime remained his insistence that the party must practise equity, fairness and justice.

Wike spoke at the Community Secondary School 1 in Mogho Town where the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) inaugurated its campaign for Gokana Local Government Area.

The governor insisted that the threat was laughable as his detractors would not win at the poll to have an opportunity to execute it.

He said: “Most of you have watched on YouTube where they said they will deal with me when they win. You can’t win.

“You’ve not won yet you are threatening to deal with some people. Will God allow you?”

Wike said he remained a strong proponent of equity, fairness and justice because it was the only way to foster inclusivity in PDP.

He pointed to the evil of denying other equal stakeholders the due rights that would give them a sense of belonging.

He said: “All of them planning and saying they will deal with us, they’ve not been born. I dare them, let them try it.”

Wike told Gokana people to be proud of their nativity as citizens of Rivers, boasting that nobody could intimidate the state and subject it to playing a second fiddle in the country.

The governor also advised the people to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) that would be used to punish haters of Rivers State.

He said the 2023 election would be about the use of the PVCs and would not be the experience of 2019 when officers of the Nigerian Army and police were used to intimidate voters.

Wike stressed that he was a better brother to the Gokana people because of what his administration has done in their domain.

The governor revealed that many roads had been constructed by his administration in Gokana together with the bridge connecting K-Dere to Bolo Town ongoing.

Wike earlier paid a courtesy call on His Majesty, Festus Babari Paago-Bagia, Gberemene Gokana kingdom in Giokoo.

PDP governorship candidate, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, was hopeful the party would win the election in the state.

Fubara assured that when elected, his administration would continue in the performance footstep set by the Wike administration.

He said he would do everything possible to sustain the security of life and property, and provide more road and educational infrastructure in the area.

Director-General of Rivers PDP Campaign Council, Felix Obuah, acknowledged the massive turnout of Gokana people to the rally and enjoined them to collect their PVCs so that they can vote.

Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Fred Kpakol, said the PDP had won all elections in the council and they understand that politics is about interest and service.

According to him, they have no other political option other than supporting the consolidation team and ensuring that all candidates of the PDP win at the poll.

Former Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Kenneth Kobani, said the Gokana people would never abandon Wike and the PDP.

According to him, they were ready to take up any electoral fight against those whose stock-in-trade was to abuse the governor instead of engaging in issues.

Speaking on behalf of the candidates, Senator Barinada Mpigi assured that they would commit to serving the interest of the Gokana people and by extension the Ogoni land.
PoliticsStop Going To Abeokuta, Obi's PCC Head Of Media, Onifade Tells Tinubu by Eva2000(op): 12:11am On Jan 26, 2023
Tinubu has, in some inexplicable ways, developed a penchant for making scathing remarks about Buhari anytime he's in Abeokuta.

The Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has advised his APC counterpart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to desist from visiting Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Bola Tinubu

This comes after a recent development that caught the former Lagos State Governor throwing subtle jabs at President Muhammadu Buhari's government.

Pulse reports that the APC Presidential candidate, while addressing the mammoth crowd of supporters at his campaign rally in Ogun State on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, alleged that the lingering fuel scarcity in the country was a plot designed to scuttle the upcoming elections.

He also faulted the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to introduce new Naira notes, claiming that was intended to sabotage the election.

“They don’t want this election to hold. They want to sabotage it. Will you allow them?

“They have started coming up with the issue of ‘no fuel’. Don’t worry, if there is no fuel, we will trek to cast the vote.

“If you like increase price of fuel, hide the fuel or change the ink on the naira notes, we will win the election," Tinubu told the rally at the MKO Abiola stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Obi Mocks Tinubu

Reacting to the development via a statement by Head of Media, Obi/Datti Presidential Campaign Council, Diran Onifade, Obi urged Tinubu's handlers to tell him to stop going to the Gateway state.

Recall that prior to the APC presidential primaries last year, Tinubu was in Abeokuta where he went into a tirade, calling out those he perceived to be working against his ambition including the state governor, Dapo Abiodun who he infamously referred to as 'Eleyi' - Yoruba condescending way of saying 'You.'

He also made a mockery of Buhari's previous electoral losses when he said the president failed (“O lule”) three times before he (Tinubu) came to his aid.

He didn't stop there, the then-aspirant also claimed that it was his turn to be president by saying “Emi lokan”.

Making reference to the incident, Obi wondered why his APC opponent always seemed to get things wrong anytime he goes to Abeokuta.

The statement read: “If I were to be Tinubu’s adviser, I would have advised him to stop going to Abeokuta. It was in the same Abeokuta that he made the gaffe of ‘Olule’ and how President Muhammadu Buhari was crying on TV, ’emi lokan’ and all that.

“Now, he (Tinubu) is saying the fuel scarcity is meant to make the elections fail and how they are going to take over power from them. Who are they or them?

“He could have been talking to the CBN governor (Godwin Emefiele) and the Minister of Petroleum and who is the minister of petroleum in this respect, President Muhammadu Buhari. The same man that Tinubu has been campaigning that he wants to take over from and continue the good work.

“I think his advisers should advised him to stop going to Abeokuta because he gets things wrong every time he goes

CrimeLagos Teacher Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For Defiling 8 Pupils by Eva2000(op): 12:24pm On Jan 25, 2023
An Islamic teacher in Lagos, Adam Farouk has been sentenced to life imprisonment for defiling eight of his pupils in his class.

Justice Abiola Soladoye of an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court in Lagos State convicted the teacher on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, after finding him guilty of defilement on multiple occasions.

It was gathered that Farouk defiled the pupils, who were between the ages of six and 11, between November 2018 to February 2019 on Balogun Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi area of the state.

The convict was arraigned on eight counts of sexual assault preferred against him by the Lagos State Government.

While delivering judgment, Justice Soladoye stated that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt the ingredients of the eight counts bordering on sexual assault by penetration.

Soladoye described the convict as morally corrupt and an embarrassment to the Islamic faith.

According to the judge, the testimony of the survivors was consistent and truthful, adding that their demeanor during the trial showed that they were not lying.

She held that the evidence of the pupils was corroborated as they identified the convict as their teacher who penetrated their private parts with his index fingers.

The judge further held that the defendant asked the pupils to turn their backs while he defiled them one after the other.

Her words: “The demeanour of the defendant is nothing to write home about; his stony face appears mischievous; he is extremely unkind and ruthless, fingering his students with his index fingers.

“What an Islamic teacher, who took undue advantage of poor students in Islam and messed around with their purity and dignity.

“He is meant to teach his students morals, discipline and values, but alas, the reverse is the case.

”The dignity and safety of our students must be cherished. Dirty Islamic teacher of his kind must be locked away and made to pay for his dirty sexual indiscretions.”

Having convicted Farouk, the judge called on the Lagos State Government to adequately monitor educational institutions.
PoliticsI Will Never Campaign For Atiku- Wike Insists by Eva2000(op): 12:16pm On Jan 25, 2023
Governor Nyesom Wike has that ongoing campaigns in the state for candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) precludes the presidential candidate of the opposition party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

According to him, members of the Rivers State PDP Campaign Council will not campaign for Atiku because there was no understanding to warrant such support in the oil-rich state.

Wike, who spoke in Bonny during inauguration of the Local Government Campaign by the Council, said: “Go home and have it on your mind that the PDP in Rivers State, we have taken governorship, we have taken the senatorial, we have taken the House of Representatives and we have taken the House of Assembly.

“That is the election we are doing here. These are the ones (candidates) who told me to come and campaign for them. No other person told me to campaign for him.

“I can’t force myself to campaign for you when you have not asked for it. These ones (candidates) have told me. So, I’ve come here to campaign. If somebody asks you to work for him, you’ll work for him. But if they don’t want you to work for them, will you force them?”

The governor, who is the arrow-head of the Group of Five (G-5) governors, said that anybody, who said Rivers was inconsequential, would suffer repercussion for ignoring the state.

The governor enjoined all residents in the state to be rest assured that no intimidation and propaganda could cause a distraction from the political path that had been so chosen.

He said: “Any person who says Rivers State is not important, we will pepper him. Anybody who says he doesn’t regard Rivers State, we would not regard such person.

“There’s nothing like propaganda, nothing like intimidation because nobody can intimidate us. We are very, very solid. We are very strong.

“No State can point at us to determine what will happen here. Nobody can do such. So, be bold to say, I’m from Rivers State, I live in Rivers and I am happy with Rivers. What is important is our state, which we have collected.”

Wike said the state All Progressives Congress (APC) should not bother to campaign in Rivers because of the recognition given to his administration by President Muhammadu Buhari, as the best in infrastructural delivery in the country.

He said because his administration believed in practical demonstration of governance, 12 flyovers were executed within four years, in addition to other development projects.

Wike said: “All these people who say they are campaigning, what are they campaigning for? President Muhammadu Buhari, the leader of APC said I am the best as far as development is concerned. What nature of campaign will they be doing again?”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in its last update on voter registration disclosed that 93,469,008 voters have been registered for the upcoming exercise. These voters are spread across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

While every vote, irrespective of where it’s being cast, is important in winning an election, the candidates and political parties in the 2023 contest will spare no effort to dominate certain states with high voting populations.

Even though the outcomes of recent presidential elections in the country have established the fact that no single state or region can determine who emerges the winner, a convincing win for a candidate in the majority of these states may take them closer to victory.

Therefore, the jostle for dominance in these states with high voting populations is expected to get thicker as we inch closer to the D-Day.

Lagos — 7,060,195 voters
Known as Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos leads the way in terms of voting population in the country. With an estimated population of over 20 million people, the South West state may play a key role in determining the next Nigerian president.

However, candidates would be worried about the state’s notorious history of low voter turnout, especially in presidential elections. In 2019, despite having the highest number of registered voters, states like Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna recorded more votes than Lagos.

An interesting aspect of this is, since 2003, all the candidates that managed to win Lagos have gone on to become president.

Kano — 5,921,370 voters
With the reputation of being the most politically active state in the country, Kano state has always led the conversation in terms of highest voter turnout in presidential elections.

History has also shown that Kano voters are usually unanimous in their voting pattern. In 1999, the state voted overwhelmingly for the eventual winner, Olusegun Obasanjo. However, voters in the North West state have consistently pledged their allegiance to Muhammadu Buhari since 2003.

It’s interesting to note that no other candidate has won the majority of votes in Kano in the last 20 years. But, with Buhari not on the ballot this time around, it remains to be seen the direction the state will go.

Kaduna — 4,335,208 voters
All eyes will also be on Kaduna in the forthcoming election, not only because it’s the state with the third highest number of registered voters, but also for its cosmopolitan nature.

Kaduna is believed to be the melting pot of different tribal and ethnic groups in Nigeria and its heterogeneous nature usually reflects on the voting pattern over the years.

Though Muslims are in the majority in the state, at the return to democracy in 1999 and also in 2003, Kaduna voted massively for Obasanjo, a Southern Christian. However, the state, just like Kano, has since 2011 been voting for Buhari.

Meanwhile, as the state is up for grabs in the coming election, all the frontline candidates have devised strategies to ensure that they win the majority of votes in Kaduna.

Rivers — 3,537,190 voters
Rivers state has proven to be a one-party state since 1999 with PDP dominating especially in the presidential elections.

No other party has been able to record up to 25% of total votes cast in a presidential election in Rivers State in the last six election cycles.

However, history also shows that not every time a candidate takes Rivers that they go on to win the election. This trend actually started in 2015 when President Buhari scored enough winning margin in some northern states to cushion the gap.

Katsina — 3,516,719 voters
Katsina, the state of the outgoing president, has shown loyalty to one of its illustrious sons in the last five election cycles.

The only time another candidate won the state was in 1999 when Buhari was not on the ballot, the same scenario we have on our hands again this time around. While winning Katsina state may not necessarily guarantee victory for any candidate in the upcoming election, it’d be interesting to find out if the Buhari factor will still come into play.

These are the other states with large voting populations ahead of the 2023 election:

6. Oyo — 3,276,675

7. Delta — 3,221,697

8. Plateau — 2,789,528

9. Benue — 2,777,727

10. Bauchi — 2,749,268
PoliticsCs‘tinubu Bribed Govs To Emerge APC Presidential Candidate, Osinbajo A Better Op by Eva2000(op): 2:51pm On Jan 24, 2023
A former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council and Director of Civil Society, Hajia Najaatu Mohammed, has accused Bola Ahmed Tinubu of financially inducing APC governors to emerge as the party’s flagbearer at the primaries.
Naija News reports that Hajia Naja’atu Mohammed had last Saturday announced her resignation from the APC campaign organization and the ruling party.

The former director had stated that her conscience would not allow her to continue in the APC PCC, claiming that Tinubu was too sick and possibly suffering from Alzheimer’s disease as he could not hold a teacup when she visited him in London some time ago.
Speaking in an interview with ThisDay, Mohammed said Tinubu’s gaffes and blunders were an indication of ill health, which shows that he is incapable of presiding over the affairs of the nation.
According to her, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would have been a better choice given Tinubu’s poor health.
Disclosing that the party primary election was a cash-and-carry exercise, she said, “You see, there is nothing like democracy in this democratic system. The whole thing is a hoax. I will tell you, for instance, what happened in their primary election. People were given ballot papers with Asiwaju written on it. That was what happened, and we saw a clip in which governors were collecting money. It’s so shameful. It’s a disgrace.
“Yes, collecting money, sharing money given to them by Asiwaju. It is such a disgrace. It is the first time that I have heard or seen such. At least in this dispensation, I have been in politics for decades, I was born into it. But this is the first time that a presidential candidate will be sponsoring governors.
“This is what is happening. So, you see, Asiwaju is synonymous with money. So, for God’s sake, if all it takes is money, then, what else will he do when he takes over power? It’s for him to retrieve his money. It is not even about Egbe Omo Oduduwa, Osinbajo is, even more Egbe Omo Oduduwa than Tinubu.
“He’s a Professor, he’s brilliant. For few weeks he was given to govern this country, he did a great job. But the Lagos-Ibadan press, they said all sort of things against him. Tinubu controls the strongest propaganda machine in this country, which is the Lagos–Ibadan press.”
The former director of the APC campaign in charge of civil society, who has recently met and allegedly endorsed the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, said those from the north believe Tinubu is not capable of governing.
“Let me tell you why they are following Asiwaju, they know that he’s incapable. They know that he can’t decipher, they know that there is something seriously wrong with his brain. It is like they say in Hausa, somebody will hold the horn, and you will be milking. So, all of these people talking all these nonsense know that he’s incapable, know that he’s handicapped but they also know that he’s already a cabal that they can depend on for the piece of a pie.
“No more, no less. I want to tell you that I have not spoken to anyone, both in or outside APC from up north that I know that has told me or that believes Asiwaju is capable. But all they are saying is that you know we have to get something out of it.
“The problem is extreme selfishness. All these people that you are talking about are thinking of themselves as individual, their personal interest; they don’t have the country at heart. That is why I said I have to follow my conscience because I cannot afford…in fact, to be silent is criminal. This is my position. PoliticsJUST-IN: APC Ends Bauchi Presidential Campaign Rally Abruptly Over Power Outage by Eva2000(op): 4:29pm On Jan 23, 2023
The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi ended abruptly, on Monday, after the microphone on the podium ceased working following a disruption of power supply.

The microphone malfunctoned when the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, had barely started making his remarks, which was supposed to usher President Muhammadu Buhari and the presidential candidate of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to the podium.

LEADERSHIP learnt that frantic efforts of the engineers manning the electrical equipment of the event were futile, thus forcing President Buhari to merely walk to the stage and presented the party flag to APC governorship candidate in the State, Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar (rtd).

Soon after the President presented the flag, his security details immediately ferried him out of the stadium without making any speech, a development that caused commotion in the facility.

Similarly, Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, left the venue without uttering a word to the crowd of party members and supporters.
