When I was 20 years old, I was sharing a 200-sq-ft Manhattan studio with a woman twice my age.

We had a bunk bed: her on the top, me on the bottom.

And I hated her.

I was working at a tech startup run by a Norwegian guy and a Canadian woman.

The company was gaining steam.

But I was miserable.

I never wanted to be at home.

I would stay out for hours and hours, walking the streets of New York, going anywhere I could think of to avoid seeing her.

This is the best time to be investing, as you have more time on your hands, as a financial manager for people wealth have come down to factor why people don’t make the most of their wealth.

1. People don’t start saving early enough.

2. They don’t invest right.

These are the top two reasons.

I will illustrate from my own research findings and how to combat these issues.

Don’t start saving young
I did some research for a personal at age 20.

How much they would need to retire with the average cost of living (U.S) in line with the present level of inflation.

At, 20 now if you factor in inflation at 2% (CPI target level) this would equate to $5,704.61 (the present average living is $ 2,500 a month for a single person in the U.S). This would give 47 years to save this monthly amount for retirement.

With simple interest, saying you put in an annuity when you hit 67 to keep in line with inflation.

You will need to fund this lifestyle for 18 years (based on the average life expectancy), this would equate to $1,348,858.

This is actually exaggerated by the amount, research says you would need $1.7 million to retire so this would equate to $253,324.54 at 20 with inflation.

From personal experience, I see that no one in their 20s saves any more.

When I compare this to the baby boomers that statistically, save on average $153,000 while gen X by the same time frame save $22,485.

People, in their 20s seem more inclined by buying new clothes to impress their friends.

These seem to be the first thing many foreigners say while interacting with many Nigerians for the first time.

According to them, In saying this the Nigerian wouldn’t think of scamming them because they’re sounding like a local.



I think some got this from scam watch sites, travel agencies, their government.

I really don’t care where they got that from because such familiar parlance won’t stop Nigerian from scamming you if he wanted to.

You contacted a Nigerian because you want to get some information, you’re testing the Nigerian in the process if i have scamming tendencies, we are not even talking money for Christ sake.



For some time now, Nigerians studying abroad only come back home as a corpse, the ones alive have nothing good to tell.

The government of the host countries have no good explanation to give, neither the Nigerian government, as usual.

India, Ukraine, North Cyprus, Russia, Malaysia, even our own brothers South Africa, top the list on the dishonourable treatment of some Nigerians.

Some of these Nigerians are not innocent, but the majority of them are but general hate is spread on them all.

Some of these acts are purely racist but in most cases, it’s due to the news, the rumours they have heard about Nigerians:

Internet scammer.

Drug pushers.



love-vendor, etc.

These are susceptible youths, mostly from rich homes, hoping to get a good and affordable education from these countries but are met with hate and untimely death all because of generalization, a single story.
