The worst outbreak of Ebola, which has killed 961 people and triggered an international public health emergency, may have started with a 2-year-old patient in a village in Guinea.
About eight months ago, the toddler, whom researchers believe may have been Patient Zero, suffered fever, black stool and vomiting. Just four days after showing the painful symptoms, the child died on December 6, 2013, according to a report published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Scientists don't know exactly how the toddler contracted the virus. Ebola is spread from animals to humans through infected fluids or tissue, according to the World Health Organization.
"In Africa, infection has been documented through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines," WHO says, though researchers think fruit bats are what they call the virus's "natural host."
Researchers who published the paper this year found a chain of illnesses in the toddler's family.
After the child's death, the mother suffered bleeding symptoms and died on December 13, according to the report. Then, the toddler's 3-year-old sister died on December 29, with symptoms including fever, vomiting and black diarrhea. The illness subsequently affected the toddler's grandmother, who died on January 1, in the family's village of Meliandou in Guéckédou.
The area in southern Guinea is close to the Sierra Leone and Liberia borders.
The illness spread outside their village after several people attended the grandmother's funeral.
Funerals tend to bring people in close contact with the body. Ebola spreads from person to person through contact with organs and bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, urine and other secretions of infected people. It has no known cure.

Two of the funeral attendees appeared to bring back the virus to their village, and it spread to health care workers and other family members who took care of infected patients.
"A health care worker from Guéckédou with suspected disease, seems to have triggered the spread of the virus to Macenta, Nzérékoré, and Kissidougou in February 2014," stated the report, noting that more Guinea towns were affected.
Clusters of the disease popped up in early 2014 in these areas, with the initial patients suffering fever, vomiting and severe diarrhea, according to the report. Hemorrhaging was less frequent, the report noted.
In early March, the Ministry of Health in Guinea and Doctors Without Borders in Guinea were notified about the disease clusters.
Health investigators arrived that month and began tracing the disease by examining hospital documents and conducting interviews with affected families and villagers.
Ebola has now spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, prompting global concerns.
The report about the emergence of Ebola in Guinea was authored by dozens of international doctors and researchers from institutions in France, Germany, Guinea, WHO and Doctors Without Borders.

A lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Dr. Auwal Ibrahim, has developed anti-diabetes drugs from local herbs. It was gathered that the research was part of his Ph.D thesis conducted at the University of Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.
Speaking yesterday with Daily Trust, Dr. Ibrahim of the Biochemistry Department said: “Basic research on type 2 diabetes is usually hard to execute in African countries, because of some procedural issues and lack of appropriate animal models. Interestingly however, my research was focused on the development of more effective and less toxic remedies against the type 2 diabetes. More specifically, the work focused on the validation and development of anti-diabetes plant-based remedies as well as the identification of novel chemical leads from African plants”.
He added: “I used a number of molecular techniques to demonstrate the potentials of some African plants in the management of type 2 diabetes. Overall, the findings of the work are important for relevant government agencies, pharmaceutical industries, scientific community and poor diabetic patients, because it might open an avenue for the development of viable and cost effective herbal products or novel drugs to manage type 2 diabetes”.
The lead supervisor of the research, Dr. Shahidul Islam, said
Ibrahim’s work was remarkable not only for its innovation, “but also because two of his three Ph.D thesis examiners suggested that the work be accepted without any corrections”.

Amnesty International released a video evidence of human rights abuse by Nigeria’s military.
The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, is investigating an Amnesty International video allegation of human rights abuse by the military, the Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade has said.
Briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Mr. Olukolade said that the Nigerian military considers human right issues seriously and would never condone any proven case of abuse by its personnel.
He said that the DHQ, in addition to the already existing Joint Investigation Team, JIT, has constituted a team of senior officers and legal cum forensic experts to study the video footage.
He said that the team would also investigate the resultant allegations of infractions in order to ascertain the veracity of the claims with a view to identifying those behind such acts.
Mr. Olukolade explained that the investigation would further determine and stimulate necessary legal action against any personnel or anyone found culpable in accordance with the provisions of the law.
He said that the military has over the years demonstrated a pedigree devoid of such acts in several operational theatres in and out of the country.
The director said that the Nigerian Armed Forces cannot condone any action or inaction that tramples on the right to life of any Nigerian.
Mr. Olukolade said that the military welcomes the interest being shown by international bodies and civil society groups on observance of human rights in all aspects of the ongoing counter terrorism campaign in the country.
“Despite the highly challenging and peculiar nature of the variables in the operations, the importance of accountability for all actions had remained paramount.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria is conscious of the nation’s obligation to observe all rules, regulations and commitments in all activities.
“And the military wishes to assure the international community, bodies and citizens that it will not encourage or condone any form of violation,” he said.
Mr. Olukolade said that military authorities were deeply concerned about the set of video footage being circulated and which unfortunately has also become reference data for Amnesty International in its report.
“Much as the scenes depicted in these videos are alien to our operations and doctrines, it has to be investigated to ensure that such practices have not crept, surreptitiously into the system.
“The DHQ considers these allegations too grievous to be associated with Nigerian troops, considering the doctrinal and operational contents of the training imparted to personnel on a continuous basis.
Mr. Olukolade assured that the investigation would be conducted notwithstanding the cases of impersonation that have pervaded the counter terrorism operations in Nigeria and many other related issues which cast doubts on the claims made in the video.
He said that the DHQ authorities view those grave allegations very seriously, more so as it borders on the integrity of the ongoing counter-terrorism operation, which must be sustained in the interest of Nigeria’s survival.
Mr. Olukolade said that the ultimate objective of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operation is the complete cessation of the heinous and barbaric activities of the terrorists.
“It will therefore be absurd for the Nigerian Armed Forces as an institution to perpetrate such unprofessional acts in the manner and level depicted in that video as alleged by Amnesty International.
“Indeed, that level of barbarism and impunity has no place in the Nigerian military. Respect for the sanctity of life is always boldly emphasised in our doctrinal trainings.
“It must thus be reiterated that the Nigerian military is a very well organised professional body of troops whose conducts in war and peace times are guided comprehensively by law,” Mr. Olukolade stated.
He also said that Armed Forces of Nigeria is conscious of the country’s obligation to observe all rules, regulations and commitments in all activities.
Mr. Olukolade said the military recognises Amnesty International, and is committed to observe of rules of engagement and human rights in its counter terrorism operations.

This is not the first but probably the most gruesome of such accusations against the Nigerian military.
Amnesty international, AI, on Monday released video footage it claimed showed soldiers slitting the throats of men accused of being members of Boko Haram.
The soldiers were aided by members of the government sponsored militia commonly known as Civilian JTF.
The bodies of the killed men were dumped into a mass grave.
Amnesty said it got the footage, which may be evidence of war crimes committed by the Nigerian military, from numerous sources during a trip to Borno State.
“This shocking new evidence is further proof of the appalling crimes being committed with abandon by all sides in the conflict. Nigerians deserve better. What does it say when members of the military carry out such unspeakable acts and capture the images on film?” said Salil Shetty, Amnesty International’s Secretary General.
“These are not the images we expect from a government which sees itself as having a leadership role in Africa. The ghastly images are backed up by the numerous testimonies we have gathered which suggest that extrajudicial executions are, in fact, regularly carried out by the Nigerian military and CJTF,” he added.
Grisly Images
According to Amnesty, one of the footage allegedly taken on March 14, 2014, showed what appeared to be soldiers and members of the civilian JTF using a blade to slit the throat of several detainees and dumping their bodies into an open mass grave.
“The video shows 16 young men and boys seated in a line. One by one, they are called forward and told to lie down in front of the pit. Five of them are killed in this way; the fate of the remaining detainees is not shown on video, but eyewitness accounts confirmed that nine of them had their throats cut while the others were shot to death.
“Additional footage featuring some of the same perpetrators, taken earlier that day at the same location, shows two detainees digging a grave under armed guard before the killing is carried out. One is told to lie down in front of the pit, where his legs and head are held by what seem to be CJTF members. The individual, who appears to be the commander of the group puts his right foot on the man’s side, raises his knife, kisses it and shouts “Die hard Commando” and cuts the throat of the restrained young man. All other military and CJTF shout “Yes oga [boss], kill him,” Mr. Shetty said.
Amnesty explained that witnesses confirmed that the videos were taken on March 14, 2014 the day Boko Haram fighters attacked Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri and freed its members being held in detention. The organisation claimed that about 600 other prisoners who were set free by the Boko Haram fighters were rounded up at various locations in the town by soldiers and members of Civilian JTF and subsequently killed extra-judicially.
“The detainees in the video were rearrested by the CJTF in Giddari Polo, near the Barracks, where various sources have confirmed that a number of other recaptured detainees were shot and killed by soldiers after being handed over to the military. The military then took the corpses and the detainees to a location outside Maiduguri, near Giddari, where the executions are reported to have been carried out and recorded on camera,” a statement by AI explained.
Further evidence from the video suggests that the extra-judicial killing might have been carried out by soldiers from the Support Company of the 81 battalion of the Nigerian army.
“No buildings, roads or other infrastructure can be seen in the video but the noise of cars confirms that it is near a road. Several of the armed captors are wearing military uniforms, one of which has the words “Borno State Operation Flush” emblazoned on the front. The ID number on one of the guns is also clearly identifiable (81BN/SP/407). According to military sources, the rifle belongs to the Support Company of the 81 Battalion and it has not been reported missing.”
Similarly, AI also claimed that it uncovered evidence of mass killing in Bama, a town that has been in the centre of the insurgency. It claimed at after a “screening” exercise in a market on July 23, 2013, 35 men accused of being Boko Haram members were beaten with sticks and machetes before being taken to the nearby barrack.
On July 29, the men were brought back to their community and shot several times and their bodies dumped at different locations in the town.

“At that time everyone was aware that these people [had been] killed, [and] started running to look. We found [our relative] near Bama bridge. Plenty of people were with us. They [had] shot five of them [in that location alone]. There were five bodies including [my relative]. He had a bullet hole in his chest and no clothes, only trousers. We took the body and buried it. There is no death certificate; Bama hospital is not functioning. There is no place to complain; the town has restricted movement. Everybody left what happened to God,” a relative of one of the men told AI.
The Nigerian military has a history of human rights violation against civilians. Though this is not the first time the allegation of large-scale extrajudicial killings will be trailing the Nigerian military, this ranks among the most gruesome.
In May 2013, Human Rights Watch, HRW, alleged that the military carried out widespread raid of Baga Town destroying over 200 houses and killing more than 180 civilians. HRW called on the Nigerian government and military authorities to investigate its claim and prosecute those found culpable.
Apart from issuing blanket denial, neither the Nigerian military nor government has shown any interest in thoroughly investigating these allegations.
The military has always denied its soldiers were culpable of extra-judicial killings. In a statement on Tuesday, the Defence Headquarters restated that claim.
“The Defence Headquarters considers these allegations too grievous to be associated with Nigerian troops, considering the doctrinal and operational contents of the training imparted to personnel on a continuous basis; emphasising the importance of respect for Human Rights and dignity of human person as well as observance of humanitarian laws. Rather, the scenes in that video clip clearly depict a pattern consistent with the atrocious operations of the terrorists,” said Director of Defence information, Chris Olukolade, a Major General.
“Respect for the sanctity of life is always boldly emphasized in our doctrinal trainings. Indeed, that level of barbarism and impunity has no place in the Nigerian military. It must thus be reiterated that the Nigerian military is a very well organized professional body of troops whose conducts in war and peace times are guided comprehensively by law,” he added.
Mr. Olukolade later in a press briefing pledged that the military would investigate the new video allegations.
Boko Haram raids
AI also condemned the incessant unchallenged raids in Bama and its environs by Boko Haram where scores of civilians accused of cooperating with the military are specifically targeted.
“Boko Haram staged its most deadly assault on the town over the course of several hours early in the morning of 19 February 2014, which locals report left almost 100 people dead and more than 200 injured. Improvised explosive devices and grenades were used to destroy huge swathes of the town.”
A resident told AI that the insurgents “had a field day killing, burning and demolishing”.

The Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, on Thursday appointed Suleiman Abba as the new Inspector General of Police.
This was confirmed by presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, via his twitter handle.
“New IGP Abba replaces IGP Abubakar who proceeds on statutory retirement. IGP Abba’s appointment is with effect from August 1, 2014,”Mr. Abati said.
Mr. Abba’s appointment comes after the retirement of his predecessor, Mohammed Abubakar, who retires after 35 years of public service.
Mr. Abubakar’s tenure as police chief would be remembered for the official removal of road blocks which police officers used in extorting motorists.
Mr. Abubakar on resumption of duty in 2012 ordered that all road blocks across Nigeria be dismantled, although some were still (illegally) maintained.
The new police chief, Mr. Abba, was until his appointment an Assistant Inspector General, AIG, in charge of Zone 7 command.
He was also a former Aide-De-Camp, ADC, to the wife of a former military Head of State, Maryam Abacha.
On Tuesday, speculations emerged that Mr. Abba had been selected by Mr. Jonathan and the Police Council which consists of governors of various states across Nigeria and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mike Okiro.
Some people had argued that appointing Mr. Abba as the new IGP would raise concerns because he was from the same zone as his predecessor.
Mr. Abba is from Jigawa State and is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.
Positions previously held by him in the Police include Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT Command, Deputy Force Secretary and Commissioner of Police, Rivers State.
His appointment is with effect from Friday, August 1, 2014

Mr. Yammama says he’s thrilled to have emerged winner in the keenly contested competition.
A Nigerian postgraduate student of Creative Technology at Middlesex University, United Kingdom, has emerged first place winner in the British Council’s Enterprise Challenge competition.
Nasir Yammama, who is an indigene of Katsina state, won the U.K. leg of the competition, out of over 2,000 contestants, with his invention of a farming support application that can help farmers with information about weather and how to take care of their farmlands.
Mr. Yammama on July 1 had a mentoring session with renowned entrepreneur and chairman of Virgin Group, Richard Branson, as part of the reward for the competition. He is also to attend entrepreneurship training at the Branson Centre for Entrepreneurship in South Africa.
In a statement posted on its website, the British Council noted that “Nasir’s ability to think outside the box and develop digital solutions to everyday problems has earned him the respect of his peers and prizes and various international competitions (e.g. Oracles Thinkquest, Digital Peers International’s Digites etc.)”
The judging panel averred that “What struck us about Nasir was that unlike a lot of young people his age, he is actively thinking about solutions to Nigeria’s current problems and he has taken a different perspective to what he believes this solutions might be.
“At the moment the Nigeria agricultural sector is one of the most underfunded with the greatest potential to boost the country’s economy. In terms of our question, Nasir proved to us that not only is he aware of the current issues, his proposed product seeks to plug into and piggy back on the foundation of recently launched government initiatives.
“His product is a knowledge sharing mobile application which seeks to ensure that Nigerian farmers make informed decisions about their business based on what is available to them in their local environments, for example the farmers will receive information about the best soil types to use for their various agricultural products, weather and its effect on crops etc.
“This product is very much in the developmental stages, but we are excited to embark on this journey with Nasir. He proved to us during his presentation and board interview that he has done his research and we look forward to what the future brings and will support him in any way we can.”
In his reaction to winning the prize, Mr. Yammama said that he’s thrilled to have emerged winner in the keenly contested competition.
“I was very delighted when I received a letter notifying that I’ve emerged the first place winner of the competition in UK. But then, such delight always comes with a certain responsibility. It has challenged me to work harder and stay focused on my goals,” he said.

MouthAction or oral intercourse is sexual activity involving the stimulation of the Instruments of a person by another person using the mouth (including the lips, tongue or teeth). While cunnilingus is MouthAction performed on a female, MouthAction is MouthAction performed on a male. Anilingus, another form of MouthAction, is oral stimulation of a person’s anus. However, oral stimulation of other parts of the body (as in kissing and licking) is usually not considered MouthAction.
It may be performed as pre-intimacy to incite sexual arousal before other sexual activities (such as vaginal or anal intercourse), or as an erotic and physically intimate act in its own right.
Perhaps, one of the reasons for the increase in this form of sexual behaviour is the belief that it involves a lower risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. However, like most forms of sexual activity, MouthAction can pose a risk for contracting sexually transmitted diseases.
According to Dr. Olumide Apata , a medical practitioner at the General Hospital, Ife-Ekiti, Ekiti State, “MouthAction can be risky because it has its own danger. Most people involved in it do so because they assume there is a lower risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease. But the truth is, there is a high risk of contracting diseases through MouthAction. Sexually transmitted diseases can be categorised into four groups which are outside the mouth, inside the mouth, inside the throat and those that manifest all over the body.
“Through the mouth, one can easily contract Herpes type 1 and type 2. Herpes is also called cold sores or fever blisters, which is an infection of the face or mouth. Herpes is mostly easily transmitted by direct contact with a lesion or the body fluid of an infected person or individual. Transmission may also occur through skin to skin contact during periods of asymptomatic shedding. Barrier protection methods are the most reliable method of preventing transmission of herpes.
“There is also the risk of contracting oral candidiasis that occurs in the mouth. Also, mouth gonorrhea, which is also called pharyngeal gonorrhea, can be contracted through MouthAction. People get this infection when they come in contact with infected people or body fluid like pus, white discharge or vaginal fluid when secreted from the infected person thereby causing gonorrhea and also chlamydia infection. While inside the throat one can contract diseases like throat gonorrhea, throat cancer and also this gonorrhea can also affect the eyes.”
Not only can MouthAction result to contracting diseases that affect the mouth and throat, there is also the risk of contracting some life-threatening diseases including Hepatitis B and C, cancer as well as HIV.
According to Dr. Irene Bassey, a medical practitioner, “There is a link between MouthAction and cancer but it’s not MouthAction, per se, that causes cancer, but the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can be passed from person to person during sex, including MouthAction. If you aren’t exposed to HPV during MouthAction, you’re not at risk for cancer. When it comes to HIV transmission, the risk is low but that doesn’t mean it is completely absent. HIV is, transmitted through bodily fluid contact, so, if there is for instance, mouth ulcer, bleeding gums or genital sores, there is a high chance of exposure to the virus. Hepatitis C is a virus that can infect and damage the liver and it is present in the blood and, to a much lesser extent, the saliva and semen or vaginal fluid of an infected person. It can also be transmitted sexually but in the case of MouthAction, the risk is higher when there is an open sore or wound that can allow for contact of bodily fluids.”
Just like other forms of sexually transmitted diseases, prevention is always better than cure and this can be done if individuals take correct preventive measures. First of all, the more partners you have, the greater the risk of catching an infection. Also, individuals who intend to engage in MouthAction should get tested first and make sure they are disease-free before embarking on the act. Medical practitioners have also advised that the men use condoms and in cases where the woman doesn’t enjoy MouthAction with condoms, flavoured condoms can be used. This helps to reduce the risks. Also, for the woman, a dam (which is a small thin square latex or plastic that acts as a barrier between the vagina or anus and the mouth) can be used. There are also dental dams, mouth dams or cut –open, non-lubricated condoms that can be put between the mouth and the partner’s genitals or rectum.
Dr. Apata adds that women should avoid allowing their partners ejaculate in their mouths and people should be careful when choosing partner because sexually transmitted diseases are among the major health problems most Nigeria are facing and living with.
