Enyimba will start the defence of their Federation Cup title when they face non-league side Sokoto North at the Fifa Goal Project pitch in Abuja this Wednesday. The two-time African champions are favourites to progress ahead of this round of 64 clash with their unfancied opponents from Sokoto. Enyimba captain and defender Chinedu Udoji told supersport.com that the Aba club are ready for their first game of the Cup. He added that the People's Elephant will not take Sokoto North for granted despite the non-league outfit being underdogs. "In Cup competitions, there are no big or small teams. All that big or small team talk only exist on paper. Our opponents played their way up to this stage and it will be very disrespectful for us or anyone to call a team small because they don't play in the Premier League. "Yes, we have won the Federation Cup and our opponents have not, but that does not mean it will be easy facing them. We are prepared for this [Cup] match and taking it seriously. It's a knockout format and it's always possible to slip but we have no intention of falling out so early in the competition," Udoji said to supersport.com. The Federation Cup holders have travelled to Abuja without experienced midfielder Sani Kaita as newly-appointed head coach, Kadiri Ikhana, will start his managerial return to the Aba club. Enyimba have won the Federation Cup in 2005, 2009 and 2013. The Cup competition will also throw up big clashes in the round of 64 this Wednesday and Thursday. In Minna, premier division side Giwa FC face National League club ABS, while Kwara United go up against Sharks in Benin City. Both games are on Wednesday. Other big games of this round include Wikki Tourists versus El- Kanemi Warriors, Bendel Insurance versus Sunshine Stars and Gateway FC versus Kano Pillars. |

“I will never forget my goal that was cancelled against Nigeria till I die” – Dzeko Edin Dzeko has said that he will never forget his goal that was controversially ruled out against Nigeria, at the 2014 World Cup. The Bosnia-Herzegovina striker appeared to be onside, as he slotted Miralem Pjanic’s pass past Vincent Enyeama in the 21st minute of the match with the score still goalless. But the New Zealand referee chalked off the goal and few minutes later, Osaze Odemwingie scored the only goal that clinched victory for the Super Eagles. Dzeko eventually scored the opener as Bosnia beat Iran 3-1 in their last group game of the tournament, although it mattered little for them. “Despite the victory, we go home sad as we could’ve gone further,” Dzeko said. “The goal they cancelled out against Nigeria, I will remember until the end of my life.” |

Residents of five communities in Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Badagry Lagos State, on Friday protested the demolition of numerous houses in their area, which left them displaced. They took their protest to the Lagos State House of Assembly in Ikeja, where they urged the lawmakers to come to their rescue. Mr Charles Adu, the Spokesman of the residents, said that the state government should urgently come to their aid because of the hardship the demolition had brought on them. He also said that though the state government had written them a notification letter on the impending demolition of houses at Agemuwo and Agalato communities, the exercise was extended beyond the areas. Adu said that the residents were surprised at the extension of the demolition to Muwo Phase Two, Araromi-Ale, and Atiporomeh communities. He said that they believed that an unknown personality, who had been using the police to intimidate the residents, had engineered the demolition. Adu said that 250 policemen invaded the communities on Dec. 14, 2013 to effect the demolition of their houses. The spokesman said that the displaced residents now lived in churches and mosques under terrible conditions. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the protesters also threatened to go on hunger strike at the Assembly premises, until their demands were met. Addressing them, the Speaker, Mr Adeyemi Ikuforiji, who was represented by Mr Segun Olulade, Chairman House Committee on Information, Strategy, Publicity and Security, commended the protesters for their peaceful conduct. “I thank you for having hope when it seems there is no hope. “I want to assure you that the House will speedily investigate the matter to a logical conclusion by the grace of God. “We are not a government that derives joy in inflicting pains on those we serve,” the lawmaker said. Ikuforiji said that since the residents had exonerated the Ministry of Physical Planning from the demolition, the Assembly would identify the faceless people behind the act. “You might not need to go on any hunger strike before justice would come your way. “So, I want to enjoin you to go back to your homes while you have two or three representatives that would stay behind for a meeting over the matter,” he said. |
Some Nigerians resident in Cote d’Ivoire on Friday in Abidjan appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to extend scholarship awards to Nigerians living abroad. They spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria when they turned out en masse to welcome Jonathan at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Airport. The President is attending a meeting of ECOWAS Heads of Government with the Japanese Prime Minister. Chief Ejike Williams, the Vice- President of the Nigerian Community in Cote d’Ivoire, said such a programme would be of great assistance. He said it would also put many idle Nigerians abroad on the right track of life. “This programme will be more beneficial to Nigerians in Cote d’Ivoire. The level of idleness here is too much, and something seriously needs to be done,’’ Williams said. Also speaking, Alhaji Musa Oyedele, the Chairman of Nigerian Community in Ajame, in Abidjan, said the move of giving Nigerians in Cote d’Ivoire the opportunity of education would be beneficial. He said it would reduce indulgence in crime and trafficking. “People take to crime and illegal means of making money because they are idle, we need government to do something,’’ Oyedele said. However, Mr Bright Moses, the President of the Association of Nigerian Youths in Cote d’Ivoire, lauded President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda. “We are proud to have a President who listens to his people. We urge him to remain undistracted in delivering his electoral promises to Nigerians,’’ he said. |

HAS the Peoples Democratic Party resolved that President Goodluck Jonathan will be its presidential candidate for the 2015 election? Probably, given the prayer the PDP offered for the President on Thursday. It asked God to allow Jonathan to win the 2015 poll. “We pray to you God, to help our President win the election and come out tops in 2015 in Jesus name. “Father, we pray that the crisis in the party would stop and that the President would lead us well in the name of God,” so prayed the PDP National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, at the inauguration of the Kwara state executive caretaker committee of the party. At the event were the National Chairman of the PDP, Bamangar Tukur; and other members of the National Working Committee, who all chorused loud “AMEN” to the prayer. Other members of the NWC who chorused their agreement to Jonathan’s victory in 2015 were the party’s National Organising Secretary, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha; National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh; and the National Treasurer, Alhaji Adewole Adeyanju. An aide of one of the NWC members, who sat close to our correspondent, wondered whether the prayer was an indication that there would not be any presidential primary in the party. “With this prayer and the ‘amen’ that followed, maybe the party has foreclosed the idea of holding any presidential primary to choose its presidential candidate,” he said. Meanwhile, Tukur has said that the party is not moved by the defection of its members to the All Progressive Congress. He said that the defection of 27 out of 30 members of the Sokoto State House of Assembly to the APC would allow other people to join the PDP in the state. “They (the lawmakers) have left already when the governor left. When 27 people leave, 270,000 will join. This is democracy. If few had left many would come in,” Tukur said. |
The Nigerian High Commissioner to Zambia, Mrs Sifawu Momoh, has said one of the Nigerian’s foremost investors, Dangote Group Plc, will soon complete the establishment of a cement factory estimated at $400m in Zambia. She said the factory, which was billed for inauguration in February, was part of the Federal Government’s strategy to strengthen economic ties with Zambia. Momoh stated this when she received a team of the Technical Aids Corps led by Mr. Salmon Shittu, from Nigeria, who briefed the envoy on new strategies being adopted by the agency to ensure the effective operations of the TAC scheme in its mandate countries. The High Commissioner, according to a statement by TAC in Abuja on Thursday, explained that the Dangote’s cement firm, when fully operational in Zambia, would give direct employment to many citizens of the country and boost the economic ties of both countries. She explained that Nigeria had a lot to learn from Zambia in areas of agriculture and tourism. She also added that her home country was ready to help in the development capacity assistance of the Zambia. “As parts of the efforts to help Zambia develop, the Nigeria Directorate of TAC has sent her medical personnel to further boost Zambian health industry,” Momoh added. She explained that the governments of both countries had been discussing ways of sustaining and increasing direct investments to both countries. The High Commissioner further explained that the investors from both countries would soon meet to share ideas on how to bring development into the country. Www.punchnews.com |
