Falcons on the brink of AWC qualification The Super Falcons are close to booking a ticket to the 2014 African Women Championship billed for Namibia following the withdrawal of Sierra Leone. Both teams were due to square off in a qualifying duel in February but Sierra Leone’s voluntary exit means the Falcons will now have to wait for the winner of the fixture between Kenya and Rwanda to know their final round opponents. In a letter dated 9th January, addressed to the General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football and copied the NFF, the Acting General Secretary of the Sierra Leone Football Association wrote: “I write with regrets to inform you of our decision to withdraw our National Female football team from participating in the aforementioned Championship scheduled to kick off mid- February 2014. “This decision which was reached at our last Executive Committee is due to the present financial status of our Football Association which makes it difficult to honour our proposed fixture against Nigeria in February this year.” It would be recalled that the U-20 Women National Team, Falconets walloped their counterparts from Sierra Leone 10-0 in Abuja in the first round of their 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualification series in October 2013, and followed up with a 6-0 hammering of their hosts in Freetown on 9th November. The 9th African Women Championship finals will be held in Namibia between 11th – 25th October, 2014. |

The South African U20 Women’s National team (Basetsana) have vowed to up their antic when they take on Nigeria in the third and final round of the Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers Canada 2014. Basetsana are among four African countries that will battle for two spots on the continent that will join the last 14 at the 2014 Edition of the Fifa U20 Women’s World Cup that will be staged between 5-24 August later this year. Basetsana know what is at stake and will be looking to carry a positive mental attitude when they travel to the Nigeria on Thursday (9 January) for the first leg encounter that will be played at the National Stadium in Abuja on Saturday, 11 January. Kick-off is at 16h00 local time in Nigeria (15h00 South African time). Coming from a 9-1 aggregate win over Tanzania in the second round, head coach Sheryl Botes feels this weeks’ preparations are crucial as they look to progress past the third round and book a historic spot for the World Cup. Basetsana mentor has assembled a strong squad of 18 players preparing for the crucial first leg qualifier at Edenvale Football Grounds and are of the opinion that preparations have been going well since the team started training on Saturday (4 January). “Preparations have been going well since the girls came together on Saturday. We all know the importance of being in top condition for the match against Nigeria. “We know it’s going to be a physical encounter, probably more physical than what we faced in Tanzania but we need to be prepared for any situation. The mood in camp is high and the girls want to do well against Nigeria,” said Botes. Basetsana will be without the services of High Performance Centre left-winger, Gabriella Salgado who has a recurring muscle injury and USA based forward, Robyn Moodaly who will be travelling back to the US due to study commitments. “We are hoping to get everything right by the time we leave for Nigeria on Thursday. With the home ground advantage on Nigeria’s side, they will obviously be looking to start off positively but we want to contain them and hopefully squeeze in an away goal. “We unfortunately had to exclude Gaby from the squad as she recovering from a recurring muscle injury but we brought in Chamelle, who will still be assessed to determine her readiness for the match. We want to do well against Nigeria and qualify for the World Cup. It would be good for the country,” said the Basetsana mentor. The South Africans will return on Monday, 13 January 2014. |

Evelyn Nwabuoku, Tawa Ishola and 28 others makes Falcons crack squad for Sierra Leone Edwin Edem Okon, the current tactician of Super Falcons has shortlisted a star studded squad for the two-legged Namibia African Women Championship Qualifiers against Sierra Leone. The first leg has been fixed for 14th February 2014 at the 60,000 seater Abuja National Stadium. A breakdown of the list shows that Rivers Angels has the highest contingents with 8 players closely followed by Delta Queens, who contributed 5 players. Falconets players like Asisat Oshoala, Sunday Uchechi-Lopes and Ibijoke Sangonuga were all excluded due to the crucial qualifier against South Africa on 11th January 2014. Desire Oparanozie, Sarah Michael, Ogonna Chukwudi, Onome Ebi, Queen Ejovwo, Joy Jegede, Gift Ele Otuwe, Rachael Ayegba, Rita Chikwelu, Chioma Nwankwo, Soo Adekwagh, Ijeoma Obi, Faith Ikidi, Helen Ukaonu, Francisca Ordega and some other foreign based players were not included as the coach decided to stick with a pool of domestic lads, futbalgalore.bl ogspot.com gathered from an insider. The dark-skinned gaffer said he will apply the elimination by substitution approach before settling for his preferred 21- player squad. "The players will resume camp on 13th January but I will still have to reduce the names down to the final 21 that will face Sierra Leone. "No one is gauranteed shirt except those who will be exceptional during the camping exercise. Namibia will host the 2014 edition of the tournament, of which Equatorial Guinea are the defending champions. Top three teams in the tournament will pick the tickets to represent Africa in Canada 2015 senior women's World Cup. Like Seriously CAF need to do something About Women Football in Africa,,he need to Organise CAF women champions League for those Countries in Africa that have women League and make it lucrative so that other countries in Africa who doesnt have women league will try as possible to have theirs. Women Football in Africa is not Competitive Because most Africa countries dont belive in women football like the way Sudan want to ban women from taking part in sports because is against their Sharia Law. Thats why see a team (Super Falcons) taking the first 7 trophies when CAF organise the women championship because there is no team to rival them in the competition, and, we can also see their performance in Fifa world cup . Thats the reason why we Nigerians Dont bother when our women teams go to any CAF competition or want to play any Africa team because we know that they are the Tournament favourite and they are surely going to win any Africa team. Fifa raise an issue of making women football to be attractive by introducing women club world cup and another question was raised like '' what about Africa'' which team is going to represent them'' and they were like'' thats one of the problems'' and beside there is a tournament going on in Japan called the ''Mobcast Cup'' for women clubs and 5 Clubs from Europe,Asia,South and North America taken part in the first and second edition with a price tag of $100,000(1st $60,000 2nd $30,000 and third $10,000) while none from Africa. SO CAF NEED TO DO SOMETHING BEFORE AFRICA BECOME A LAUGHING STOCK. |
