Beyond The Politics of Covid-19 Vaccines

Since the Federal Government made it's intension to acquire and inoculate Nigerians with Covid-19 vaccines was made public, I have read several critical comments against the plan by some Nigerians opposing the move without proposing alternative solution to the reality of the pandemic in our country.

Most of the opposing views are hinged on myths, conspiracy theories and blatant denial of the existence of the disease.

But one thing some of them failed to understand is the fact that the number of Covid-19 victims being recorded daily by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) are not just figures but fellow human beings with dreams, aspirations, visions and passion for both individual and collective successes.

They are the fathers who are breadwinners of their various families, mothers, sisters and brothers who worked hard daily to realise their ambition but got trapped in the web the dreaded pandemic.

As at the time of writing this piece, there are over 1,547 death caused by Coronavirus while there are over 127,024 confirmed cases with 24,619 active cases - these are citizens undergoing treatments in various treatments centers across the federation; not talking of the huge resources spent in the treatment of 100,858 patients who recovered from the disease and have been discharged.

Nevertheless, now that the new strain of the virus - B117 found in the United Kingdom has been discovered in the country, only God knows what would have been the fate of Nigeria had President Muhammadu Buhari not signed the ''Covid-19 Health Protection Regulations 2021" bill into law to contain the rapid spread of the disease in the country, especially the new variant - B117 which spreads faster than the normal virus.

The new law which derived it's power from the powers conffered on the President by the virtue of section 4 of the Quarantine Act has made the use of facemask and adherence to Non-pharmaceutical Interventions mandatory in any part of the federation irrespective of locality.

Part of the law reads: "In the exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Section 4 of the Quarantine Act, Cap. Q2 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2010 and all other powers enabling me in that behalf; and in consideration of the urgent need to protect the health and wellbeing of Nigerians in the face of the widespread and rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria, I, Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, hereby make the following Regulations.”

“The first part of the new regulations imposes restrictions of gatherings and enforces a physical distancing of not less than two meters between persons at all times.

“The part also provides that no gathering of more than 50 persons shall hold in an enclosed space, except for religious purposes, in which case the gathering shall not exceed 50 per cent capacity of the space.

“All persons in public gatherings, whether in enclosed or open spaces, shall adhere to the provisions of Part two of these Regulations.

“The provisions of these regulations may be varied by Guidelines and Protocols as may be issued, from time to time, by the PTF on COVID-19 on the recommendation of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC)."

“The second part of the law addresses operations of public places like open markets, malls, supermarkets, shops, restaurants, hotels, event centres, gardens, leisure parks, recreation centres, motor parks and fitness centres.

“The law provides for wearing of face masks, hands washing, and the use of hand sanitisers, amongst other regulations.

“It stipulates a penalty of a fine or a prison of six months for offenders."

Before now, the government strategy has been on interrupting the viral transmission of the disease; reducing it's risk on the health system from being overwhelmed due to increased demand, minimizing mortality among most vulnerable parts of the population until the curve is finally flattened.

But the attitude of some Nigerians who live in total disobedience to non-pharmaceutical measures of wearing facemasks, observing social/physical distancing, avoiding crowded places, washing and sanitization of hands regularly, staying at home if there is no solid reason to go out among other prevention measures put in place by the government increased the viral transmission of the disease.

The second wave of the pandemic was however made worse by super-spreaders like the general and bye-elections in some states, ENDSARS Protesters, Christmas and New Year festivities.

With the rising cases as well as the entrance of the B117 varriant, government cannot fold its arm to watch the predictions of those who said Africa would be littered with dead bodies to come true.

Nonetheless, it is instructive to note that government started the battle from the stand-point of weakness with man power shortages, inadequate facilities, poor equipments among others. But today, the reverse is the case as the difference is clear in terms sample collection, testing and establishment of treatment centers with Intensive Care Units in all the states of the federation.

Thanks to the leadership and members of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 who accepted the uneasy task despite the false and malicious accusations, media attacks, stereotyping and all sorts of unprintable names and allegations.

Propably, if only these set of Nigerians should get to know that what is now regarded as the PTF was just a piece of paper that was handed over to it's Chairman, Mr. Boss Mustapha on the 9th of March, 2020, may be they will begin to appreciate the level of works done and support it in the challenging tasks ahead.

So, when government says we should take personal responsibility and 'say no' to vaccine hesitancy, it is for our own good and safety because if the worst should happen, there would not be space in our hospitals to treat other ailments just as the Vanguard Newspaper in it's editorial comment of January 25, 2021 said: ''That the Covid-19 Pandemic has worsened our already bad situation in the health sector is an understatement. The rising cases of Covid-19 infections is fast overwhelming Nigeria's healthcare system.''

"The situation has become so critical that in some tertiary health institutions, all non-emergency cases are being suspended in order to devote more time and resources to COVID-19 care."

"We have observed that hospital admission is now guaranteed only after deposits of huge sums of money. Some private health facilities demand a deposit of between N2 million and N10 million to admit a COVID-19 patient, apart from the cost of treatment which could be up to N300,000 per day.

"It is alarming that presently in Nigeria, a COVID-19 patient who requires oxygen would, on the average, need 8 to 16 cylinders of oxygen daily at the cost of N20,000 to N50,000 per cylinder."

Such rising cost of healthcare in Nigeria, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has thus become a potential death sentence to majority of Nigerians who live below the poverty line of less than $1 a day." The editorial said.

Another reason that favours vaccination programme is the shortage of health professionals in the country. According to report, the ratio of Nigerian doctors to the population is 1: 2753. This means one doctor will be treating 2753 patients should everyone be infected with the virus. By all standards, the doctor-patient ratio in the country is inadequate because the World Health Organization recommendation is 1:600 which means one doctor should be responsible for 600 patients.

Like we all know, ideals are not always translated to reality especially in Least Developed Countries (LDC's) because of so many factors.

Therefore, the question to those encouraging vaccine hesitancy is, should we allow politics to triumph over vaccination programme that will save many lives or do we allow vaccination to prevail over politics knowing full well that advanced countries of the world like the United States with all the state of the arts medical facilities just recorded 433, 000 deaths with 25.8 million infected persons?

Which ever way we go, I want to end with a quote from the former United States President, Barack Obama during his visit to Kenya. He said: “We have not inherited this land from our forebears, we have borrowed it from our children." If we are enjoying the sacrifice made by others in the past, what sacrifice are we making to safeguard the lives of those who will come after us?

As the nation prepares to roll out it's own vaccination programme anytime soon, history will remember us if we encourage vaccination by the power of our example and not by the example of our power. Apologies to President Biden.

The Delusions of Charles Onunaiju About The PTF

I read the delusional article written by Mr. Charles Onunaiju where he maliciously faltered the decision of the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 to publish the passport numbers of 100 passengers who flouted the mandatory seven day post arrival Covid-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction test.

If the article was written to rebuke foreign returnees who refused to obey Federal Government order, it would have been more welcoming, but the writer shamlessly attacked the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19, its operational modules, it's finances and suitability of it's membership composition as well as calling for the head of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha.

Mr. Onunaiju never condemned the action of those persons he is defending which the Leadership Newspaper in it's Editorial Comment of January 10, 2021 described as "Health terrorists," for allegedly contributing to the rising cases of Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

Unlike Mr. Onunaiju, the paper in it's editorial said: ''It is gratifying to note in our opinion that the Federal Government recently slammed a six month travel ban on violators of Covid-19 protocols. The notice explained that 100 defaulters would be restricted for six months for failure to comply with the mandatory post arrival Covid-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction test. We commend the government for this bold action.

We strongly beleieve that the only way of preventing a spread of the pandemic is by adhering to non-pharmaceutical methods which involves wearing of facemasks, physical/social distancing and use of hand sanitizers. Our fragile health system cannot survive another major outbreak of the pandemic.

We also support the move by the government to impose a travel ban on very important persons (VIPs) and government officials flouting Covid-19 protocols. All VIPs and government officials that violates the protocols must be compelled to undergo the conpulsory tests.'' The paper said.

In similar vein, The Nation Newspaper in it's own comment of January 5, 2021 entitled: ''Dangerous Dodgers'' also condemned the action of the foreign returnees by saying, ''Test dodging is condemnable because it endagers others. But if the dodgers behave irresponsibly, the authorities should not encourage irresponsible behaviour. Covid-19 is a public health crisis and no one should be allowed to compound the problem through their irresponsibilty."

However, let me quickly correct some of the wrong assertions made against the PTF by Mr. Onunaiju.

Contrary to his uninformed commentary, the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 was established to coordinate and oversee Nigeria's muti-sectoral inter-governmental efforts to contain the spread and mitigate the impact of Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

In otherwords, the PTF provides overall policy direction, guidance and continuous supports to the National Emergency Operations Center at the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and other ministries and agencies of government involved in direct response to Covid-19.

Parts of the PTF mandates also include; sensitization and awareness campaigns for the general public on prevention measures. Response commordities for case management, infestion prevention and control, diagnostic laboratories and deployment strategies, providing recomendations for the provision of direct funding and technical support to states and local governments to strengthen their preparedness capacity and mobilize human, material and financial resources from within and outside the country for effective national and state level preparedness, keeping the public abreast of strategic progress with Nigeria's response and emerging developments regarding preparedness and response among others.

Before the establishment of the PTF on March 9, 2020, the nation only had two Molecular Laboratories with just 500 daily testing capacity. But today, because of the prudential and pragmatic leadership at the PTF, the nation can now boast of more than 100 Molecular Laboratories with over 20, 000 daily testing capacity.

The nation now have Covid-19 treatment centers in all the 36 states of the federation plus the Federal Capital Territory. The PTF have also receieved approval from President Muhammadu Buhari to build Oxygen Plants in all the 36 states and the FCT.

Similarly, the writter also advertised his crass ignorance when he claimed that the PTF is projecting the apocalypse. It is unfortunate that Mr. Onanuiju belongs to the categories of Nigerians rendering disservices to the nation by denying and under-extimating the virulent nature of the pandemic.

Succinctly, what Onunaiju meant by projecting the apocalypse is the use of science and data by the PTF for its risk communication and community engagement with Nigerians.

Concerning the financial activities of the taskforce as well as it's donors and expenses, Mr. Onunaiju don't have to wait for full audit report of the PTF account but can go to a designated website to get all information he needed to know about the PTF. The website is: https://statehouse.gov.ng/covid19/

On the claim by the alleged hack-writer that the Nigerian Immigration Service was not notified before advertisements were placed in some dailies, below is what the NIS said concerning the ban.

“In line with the federal government’s directives on temporary travel restrictions on 100 passengers due to non-compliance with the mandatory seven-day post-arrival COVID-19 PCR test by all in-bound travellers, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede, has directed the relevant formations to ensure immediate compliance with the travel restriction order.

“The 100 defaulting passengers have been restricted for a period of six months, from January 1st 2021 to June 30th 2021. All the affected passengers have been notified and will be prevented from passport re-issuance and travelling outside the country during this period.”

Let me also inform Mr. Onunaiju that the central idea behind the publication is to serve as deterrent to others whose action might increase "health terrorism'' in the country.

The last false narrative by the writer which I want to correct is where he claimed that the PFT is not issuing new guidelines about the virus.

Infact, below is an excerpt of the new provisional quarantine protocol for passengers arriving Nigeria introduced by the PTF and came into effect from Monday, January 11, 2021.

"One of the requirements is that traveller is required to perform a COVID-19 PCR test not more than four days (96 hours) before boarding.

PCR tests done more than 96 hours before departure are not valid and persons will not be allowed to board.

All intending passengers, including diplomats and children less than 10 years old, are to register via an online national travel portal (Nigeria International Travel Portal and proceed to fill in the online Health Declaration/Self-Reporting form located on the portal. They should ensure that the information/contact details provided on the form are correct and verifiable.

Passengers must also inform port health officials on the arrival of any change in their health circumstances since completion of the Health Declaration/Self-Reporting Form.

Passengers who falsify their status as diplomats will face prosecution."

All the things I said in this article are there in the public domain for all Nigerians to read and download.

Therefore, Mr. Onunaiju and the group he is allegedly fronting for, should be told that no amount of mudslinging or distortion of facts can discourage the PTF and it's eminently qualified members from flattening the Covid-19 curve in Nigeria.

Celebrating Diamond Anniversary in Covid-19 Year

Before Nigeria finally got her independence from the Great Britain on October 1st, 1960, several unsuccessful attempts were made to lower the Union Jack on our soil before the said year.

From the formation of the first political party - the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP) in 1923 to the incorporation of the Daily Times Newspaper in 1925 before publishing it's first title in 1926, our nationalists had always wanted to live in a free nation where their rights, liberty and pursuit of happiness is quaranteed.

Before I continue, I want to point out that the first newspaper was Iwe Irohin and it was established by Reverend Henry Townsend in 1859 in Abeokuta for missionary purposes. So, the point I want to make is the fact that Iwe Irohin was established before the historic amalgamation of the northern and sourthern protectorates of January 1st, 1914. That's why I used Daily Times Newspaper because of the role it played during our independence struggles.

Recall that our founders who were part of the Pan-African Movement which spearheaded the struggle for the emancipation of the African Continent from colonialism envisioned an independent nation where no one will have to pay a bribe before starting a business, where their inalienable rights are respected and where lives and livelihoods matters and are protected.

However, in the cause of our journey to nationhood, many have had cause to ask if the dreams of our founders is still alive in our time?

Certainly, we will be disappointed if we thinks or believe that the task of nation building is the sole responsibility of one man or one political party as the case may be. This is because no man or single party has the answer to the challenge of nation building in a developing country like ours. Instead, it is the collective responsibility of all citizens to make the country great and move it to enviable height.

It is a constant work in progress; leveraging on the foundation laid by our founders. It is the challenge of doing things right in the little corner of our rooms where no one is watching or camera recording.

Such deed may not hit the front page of our national newspapers or grace pages in our history books, but it's a matter of deriving satisfaction from our positive actions, believing that we have done something right in our own little way to make the nation better and greater.

This is the concept of patriotism. A concept that made our founders to sacrifice their time and energy to be at the forefront of our independence struggles before the Green White Green Flag was finally mounted on our soil on October 1st, 1960.

Nonetheless, I'm quite sure that in all the expectations, dreams and visions our founders had for the new nation 60 years ago, they never anticipated that there would be a time when a plague like Coronavirus will distract their vision and the developmental foundation they laid for the nation.

They never envisioned a situation where handshake among their children would be a thing of the past; giving way for the new normal.

However, inspite of the cries, pains, sorrows, loneliness and challenges brought about by Covid-19, we should however embrace the challenge thrown at us by the dreaded pandemic with the resilient spirit of a nation that survived the Civil War, Ebola Virus Disease and other ephemeral challenges we have passed through in the past by keeping safe and maintaining personal hygiene at all times.

Accordingly, we must continue to follow the guidelines and protocols laid out by the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 (PTF) and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) because these non-phamaceutical measures remains the surest and easiest ways of disrupting, dismantling, dislodging and defeating the scourge and trace of Coronavirus in the country.

Therefore, celebrating our Diamond Anniversary in the year of Covid-19 has offered us the opportunity to once again lay our hands on the ark of history by taking personal responsibility in the ongoing fight against Covid-19.

Again, this is not the time for careless celebration but time for extra-ordinary vigilance and caution because the nation is still faced with reality of Covid-19.

Finally, may the spirit of our Diamond Jubilee never excalate the scourge of Coronavirus on our soil but help us to flatten the curve in due time.

Eulogising Boss Mustapha At 64

Today, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Gida Mustapha will be adding one to his glorious years on earth.

But one thing about this year's anniversary is the fact that it came at a time the SGF is busy fighting to defeat one of the deadliest diseases in a century; a disease that have brought pains, sorrows and traumas to many homes and families as well as disrupted global economy and changed the lifestyle the world have known for decades to new ways of life which is now known as the 'new normal.'

No doubt, the SGF is leading the war against Covid-19 from all fronts with great risk to his health, life and family.

Hence, against the believe of many Nigerians, Boss Mustapha is not only fighting to defeat Coronavirus in the country, but he is also fighting to reposition our hitherto dysfunctional healthcare system and decrepit infrastructures so as to enable the nation to contain future outbreak of infestious disease on our soil.

Before his appointment as Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 by President Muhammadu Buhari in March this year, the nation only had two Molecular Testing Laboratories serving over 200 million people in a nation that once defeated Ebola Virus, Avian Influenza and other infectious diseases in the past.

The question is what magic wand did we use to achieve such victory without extending such successes to our poor healthcare system and infrastrutures?

The fact remains that we focused our attention on defeating the said diseases and taking glories without bordering to build resilient healthcare systems that will enable the nation to contain outbreak of infestious diseases in the future. That was what gave rise to early fears that enveloped the entire nation when an Italian imported the virus to the country in February this year.

But because of the extra-ordinary leadership provided by the SGF at the Presidential Taskforce as well as his unequal use of 'soft-power' in addressing issues, he was able to mobilize all the neccesary stakeholders that matters in the country in to supporting the fight and struggles to flatten the Covid-19 curve in Nigeria.

Accordingly, between March and September 3rd this year, the number of molecular laboratories in the country increased from just two to 68 and with the extention of the lifespan of the PTF to December by President Muhammadu Buhari, it is expected that more local government areas of the country, if not all the 774 LGA's will have molecular testing laboratories and other healthcare infrastructures.

The nation's testing capacity have also grown from just 500 to 15, 000 within a space of about six months. The challenge is no longer about testing capacity but about the attitude of Nigerians towards sample collection. That is why we have 15, 000 testing capacity daily, but approximately, over 6000 tests are conducted nationwide.

Most Nigerians are not showing up for sample collection. Probably, its because of the fake news and disinformation about Covid-19 out there.

The third battle the SGF is facing as Chairman of the Taskforce is the unpatriotic activities of fake news manufacturers and publishers.

There is delibrate and consistent efforts by some Nigerians to scandalize, blackmail, denigrate and discredit the efforts and sacrifices of the leadership and members of the PTF. Though, I had known that public sacrifice is a thankless one in some quarters, but the dimension it took against the taskforce was so ferocious that only a leader who has the interest of the nation at heart could bear it.

The disinformation and multimedia attacks came from all directions even from the least expected quarters, but kudos to the resilient spirit, strong leadership and strength of character exhibited by the SGF so far.

With the recent launch of Covid-19 Incidence and Response Tracker and the Resource Mobilisation Tracker Dashboards by the SGF, all information about the PTF, it's finances, donations, expenditure among others that gave rise to fake news and disinformation against the taskforce is now in public domain for anyone to asses.

Nontheless, the fight against Covid-19 should not be seen as one-man or one-group's fight, but it should rather be seen as a collective fight where every citizen is a combatant until the Covid-19 curve is collectively flattened.

Born on September 4,1956 in Adamawa State, Boss Mustapha attended Hong Secondary School in the state as well as the North East College of Arts and Sciences in Maiduguri Borno state which led to acquisition of his SSCE certificate in 1976.

He bagged his Bachelor of Law (LL.B) from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1979 and was called to the Nigerian bar in 1980.

Between 1980 and 1981, he did his compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the Directorate of Legal Services at the Army Headquarters and was responsible for the reviewing of Court Marshall Proceedings.

After his National Youth Service, he joined Sotesa Nigeria Limited, an Italian consultancy firm as an Executive Director in charge of Administration before leaving to join the prestigious law firm, Messrs Onagoruwa & Co in 1983.

His legal interests ranges from privatisation, commercialization and Liberalization of Public Companies/Corporate and Government Parastatals. He was also involved in the preparation of varied and miscellaneous banking documents such as Debentures, Guarantees, Mortgages, Bonds and Loan Syndications.

Between year 2000 and 2007, He was appointed member of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the defunct Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).

He also played key leadership roles at the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) serving as Social Secretary and Chairman of the Yola branch after which he was appointed Principal Partner of a law firm known as Adroit Lex.

He was made member of the Federal Republic of Nigeria's Constituent Assembly from 1988-1989. He was also the Chairman of the defunct People’s Solidarity Party in the old Gongola State comprising present day Adamawa and Taraba States from 1989-1990 as well as the State's Chairman of another defunct party, the Social Democratic Party from1990-1991 which he was later nominated as it's gubernatorial candidate in the new Adamawa State after it was created by General Ibrahim Babangida on August 27, 1991.

Similarly, he was appointed the Deputy National Chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), from 2010 to 2013. He again played another critical role in the party which led to his appointment as the Deputy Director-General of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.

His services remained in high demand after the defunct ACN joined forces with other progressive political parties in the country to birth a new political party called, the All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2013 and was later appointed Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council in the 2015 Presidential Election as well as member of the APC Transition Committee. He is also a member of the ruling party's Board of Trustees.

Before his appointment as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in 2017 by President Muhammadu Buhari, he was the Managing Director, Nigerian Inland Water Ways.

Besides his appointment as Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19, he is also the Chairman of Ajaokuta Presidential Projects Implementation Team as well as the Co-chairman of the Nigeria Digital Identity for Development Ecosystem Project among others.

In addition to his membership of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), he is also member to various professional bodies which include; African Bar Association (ABA), Commonwealth Lawyers Association, International Bar Association (IBA) and the Human Rights Institute (HRI).

Apart from the Bar and politics, his accomplishments are also noticeable in the private sector where he is highly respected as boardroom guru, haven been appointed into boards of several companies in the manufacturing, financial services as well as the oil and gas sectors. He is also the National Vice President, Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International, Nigeria.

The SGF is happily married and blessed with children. In his leisure time, he enjoys playing golf, lawn tennis, travelling, watching documentary films, engaging in charity works and meeting people.

On the occasion of his 64th birthday anniversary, I'm wishing the Boss of all bosses, a very warmed and memorable birthday anniversary.

The Imperatives of Re-nominating Ibrahim Magu for Senate Confirmation

Upon assumption of office in 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari left no one in doubt about his determination to 'kill corruption' in Nigeria.

Fight against corruption was one of his major campaign promises both in the 2015 and 2019 Presidential Elections.

At a time which impunity, flagrant display of ill-gotten wealth and economic subjugation and oppression was on the verge of disconnecting the country from the league of civilised nations of the world, President Buhari added flesh to one of his campaign promises by appointing Ibrahim Mustapha Magu as the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on November 9, 2015.

On his part, Mr. Magu left no one in doubt about his ability, courage and determination to tackle the task ahead.

Re-inventing a country where corruption had denied millions of it's citizens their basic rights not to talk of their general rights and privileges were great battle worth giving a try.

A country where corruption had turned government hospitals to mere consulting clinics, our roads to death traps, our life expectancy to below 50 percent, our hopes to despair and our lives to miserable conditions, all efforts must be geared towards uprooting the monster called corruption from Nigeria.

In other words, we should not be in a hurry to forget the past nasty experiences where government contracts were turned in to contract bazaars for party chieftains, cronies and mistresses.

Collective wealth of the nation were shared among the privileged few while the main street citizens suffers.

Hourglass economy was introduced to create 'loss-belt' opportunities for friends and cronies at the top, while the masses were left in the lonely island of poverty in the vast ocean of material prosperity this nation is blessed with.

Income inequalities brought chains of discrimination against the poor and constricted them to the desolate corner of the nation.

Bad cheques of insufficient funds were raised and issued to the Nigerian masses in the midst of great hope and opportunities this nation holds for everyone.

Poverty became the dynasty of the poor because education was underfunded since billions voted for it were diverted into private pockets.

Nigeria lost-out completely in the era of Millennium Development Goals (MDG) which was replaced by Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in 2015 without tangible project to show.

But the country heaved a sigh of relief on November 9, 2015 with the symbolic appointment of Ibrahim Magu as Acting Chairman of EFCC by the new Sheriff, President Muhammadu Buhari.

EFCC, a body saddled with the mandate of preventing financial crimes, enforcing financial laws and prosecuting financial offenders was rejuvenated.

In the shortest possible time, Mr. Magu changed the narratives as the fear of EFCC became the order of the day.

President Buhari also demonstrated his sincerest commitment to the agency's anti-graft war by giving Mr. Magu free hands to operate.

Between November 9 and December 31th 2015, the Magu-led EFCC secured 103 convictions against financial crime offenders.

In 2016, 194 convictions were secured while 189 convictions were also made in 2017 in addition to the billions of stolen money that were recovered.

The 2018 heralded the conviction of 217 offenders while another 890 convictions were made between January and October this year.

In fact, of the 2,165 convictions that were secured between 2009 and 2019, 70 percent were secured by Mr. Magu, while over 800 billion naira were recovered within the year under review. This is outside the monthly 4.5 billion savings the commission has been saving for the Federal Government from the ghost workers syndrome or over bloated civil service.

Properties such as filling stations, lands, real estate, petroleum products, jeweries, automobiles, vessels, hospitals, company shares, heavy machines and broadcast equipments among others were recovered by the commission between 2015 and 2018.

Of the total 407 mansions seized, 126 were forfeited to the Federal Government while 281 are under interim forfeiture.

Nine filling stations were also seized and placed under interim forfeiture by the commission.

In similar vein, of the total 98 lands seized, 42 were forfeited to the Federal Government while 56 are under interim forfeiture.

Similarly, of the total 259 automobiles seized, 224 were forfeited to the Federal Government while 35 are under interim forfeiture.

A Based Transceiver Station (BTS) equipment with sites across the five eastern states was also seized and forfeited.

Another 1, 500 metric tonnes of AGO and 3, 035 metric tonnes of LPFO were forfeited while a hospital known as St. Solomon Health Care Center situated at No. 24, Adeniyi Jones Street, Ikeja was also forfeited to the Federal Government in the year under review.

Under Magu, the untouchables not only became touchable, but were also convicted and sentenced to jail. Three former governors in the person of Jolly Nyame, Joshua Dariye and Orji Kalu as well as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Joseph Nwobike were all convicted by the Magu-led EFCC.

Among all the recoveries made by the Federal Government's anti-graft agencies, the Magu-led EFCC made over 90 percent recoveries which made him subject of attacks by corrupt Nigerians.

As of today, foreign leaders like Alpha Conde of Guinea are beginning to come to Nigeria to learn the success story behind Nigeria's war on corruption.

EFCC successes however did not come without stiff resistance and blackmails against Mr. Magu, but through courage, integrity, strength of character and determination, Mr. Magu made the troph possible.

Therefore, on this International Anti-corruption Day, a day set aside by the United Nations to raise awareness on the devastating effects of corruption across the globe as well as fashioning out innovative strategies to defeating the monster, President Buhari should not hesitate in re-nominating Mr. Magu for Senate confirmation as the enormity of the task ahead are challenging.

Punch Newspaper's Fallacy Against Dambazau

The fake news report published against the Honourable Mininter of Interior, retired Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau by the Punch Newspaper in it's feature story today is a classical case of false report with make-up stories from unverifiable sources.

The fake news writer, Mr. Eniola Akinkuotu tried hard to sell his cooked up lies against the Minister to Nigerians but the reporter is only smart by half because his report lacked substance, evidence and verifiable sources.

Hence, the latest attempt to tarnish the image and hard-earned reputation of General Dambazau simply because he is serving as Minister in President Muhammadu Buhari's Government will not stand no matter how hard they try.

Because the enemies of the government could not find any fault with the Minister on his current job, they resorted to manufacturing lies and false narratives against his past clean records in office.

However, I want to let Nigerians know that they are against the Minister simply because he has succeeded where their friends and cronies failed. It is on record that under Dambazau's watch as Minister of Interior, there is absolute peace, calm and stability in the entire nation despite the fact that we have about five days to the general elections.

Hence, it is understandable why they are doing what they are doing to distract the Minister.

There is no doubt that these folks have been pedling false reports against the Minister simply because he served as Chief of Army Staff between 2008 and 2010 but because the Punch Newspaper has joined them in publishing fake news against General Dambazau, I have decided to set the records straight.

Accordingly, the insinuation that General Dambazau was indicted by the arms probe panel is a lie from the pit of hell.

General Dambazau was never indicted by any probe panel because he never committed any offence in the first place. That General Dambazau once served as Chief of Army Staff does not mean he awarded military contacts for the purchase of arms at the time.

Let it be noted that when General Dambazau was Chief of Army Staff, the power to award military contracts for the purchase of arms was strictly done at the Ministry of Defence and not by the service chiefs as been claimed by the Punch Newspaper.

That was why Dambazau's contemporaries like Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin who also served as Chief of Air Force when General Dambazau was Chief of Army Staff was not indicted

The fact that General Azubuike Ihejirika who took over from General Dambazau as Chief of Army Staff was indicted does not mean that Dambazau committed same offence because they operated by different rules. For Example, when General Dambazau like Oluseyi Petinrin was in office, there was a Minister of Defence who took all military contracts to the Federal Executive Council Meeting for approval. But Ihejirika came to office at a time they was no substantive Minister of Defence to take Amy proposal to FEC Meeting. Because of this reality, successive service chiefs started awarding military contracts on their own.

Also, because of the above fact, both Olusenyi Petinrin and General Dambazau who served as Chief of Air Force and Chief of Army Staff at the same time left office without having anything to do with military contracts.

Like I asked earlier, is it because General Dambazau is serving under Buhari’s government that he must also be indicted for playing no part in the arms deal?

Why are they against General Dambazau when he alongside with Olusenyi Petinrin and Admiral Ibrahim served as Chiefs of Army, Air Force and Navy respectively at the same time with Air Chief Marshal Paul Dike as the Chief of Defence Staff? So why are they trying so hard to incriminate General Dambazau when his contemporaries who served alongside with him are free?

Evidence has also shown that during their time when General Mukhtar was the National Securty Adviser, there was no single arms deal as all procurements were done by the Ministry of Defence only.

So, why are they after this man for goodness sake?

Besides, when the Boko Haram insurgency began, General Dambazau had already retired from the service. So, there was no way he could have been involved in arms procurement deal for the northeast as the Punch Newspaper claimed in it's story. When General Dambazau retired, it was General Aliyu Gusau that was the National Securty Adviser. So, why are they not concerned about the other names but only that of General Dambazau?

Now, I'm beginning to notice that public service in Nigeria is one of the thankless jobs in the country because no matter what you do to make it better, they are always vested interests who are there to pull you down at all costs.

It is however unfortunate that some media houses have moved away from serving the interest of Nigerians to serving the special interests of the oppressors who disguise as messiahs.

Even if other news media are in the business of hacking people down for pecuniary reasons, no one ever expected that Punch Newspaper could be used for such un-journalistic adventure.

Is it because the times are hard? But tough times never last. If we enjoyed the sacrifices made by our forebears, then we are duty-bound to make similar sacrifices for the next generation no matter how painful it may be.

FG to close borders during polls

The federal government will temporarily close borders during the general elections to guarantee more security, Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdrahaman Dambazau (rtd) has stated.

He vowed that security operatives will do everything possible to secure borders especially during the elections.

Dambazau gave the assurance while launching the situation room of the Nigeria Internal Security and Public Safety Alert System (NISPSAS) on Friday.

NISPSAS is an integrated and single mobile application developed to assist the public access prompt response to emergencies and public safety concern the Federal Ministry of Interior situation coordination.

He said: “I want to assure you that we are very conscious of our borders particularly now and everything we can do to protect our borders during elections we will do.

“During the periods of elections all the borders will be temporarily closed till the elections are over.

“When we came in in 2015 one of the challenges we met was this lack of coordination among our security agencies.

“Lack of collaboration and cooperation and we tried to look at various ways to make things possible because without this collaboration, there so many implications.

“One of them is that you cannot really coordinate their activities well another disadvantage is the fact that you cannot have that synergy and they are bound to waste resources.

He added: “This will make them not to achieve the objectives of public safety and internal security which is the major mandate of this ministry.

“This is how we thought of having a situation room within the ministry that will link up to all the services so that we can have to monitor their activities anytime.

“We embarked on this project since 2016. This has digitalised their activities. Immigration can also with this monitor activities at the land borders and also the fire service could be able to create an alert system whereby if there is fire any part of the country they can monitor and respond. We should have the capacity to respond to incidents.

“I thank God that today we are launching this internal security and public safety alert system which linked to all the services. This app is user-friendly. The public can report any incident using this app.”

Minister of interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd), has been appointed as a member of the International Advisory Board of Africa Peace Fellows (APF).


Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Mr Mohammed Manga, announced this in a statement in Abuja.

He said that the appointment was made by College of Health and Human Services of California State University, Sacramento, U.S.


APF is an initiative of the California State University’s Centre for African Peace and Conflict Resolution (CAPCR), with major training initiatives on conflict resolution.

Manga said Dambazau would serve on the Board for a three-year term (renewable), during which he would be involved in building the next generation of peace leaders in Africa.

He recalled that 64-year-old Dambazau was Chief of Army Staff, Nigerian Army from 2008 to 2010), and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.


“He also holds two Masters’ Degrees in Political Science and Higher Educational Administration as well as a PhD in Criminology.

”Currently, he is the Chairman, University Advancement Centre, University of Ibadan and visiting Professor of Strategic Studies, Igbinedion University, Okada,” he said.

Corringendum: Fidelis Nwangwu and His Tale of Lies against Dambazau

I read the fake news article against the Honourable Minister of Interior, retired Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau by one Fidelis Nwangwu; a notorious hireling who specializes in spewing trash in the name of article writing.

Honesty speaking, Mr. Nwangwu is a less-endowed hireling who in his desperate bid to satisfy the interest of his paymasters always concoct lies, false narratives, unverified claims and non-existing tales and push them out as news articles.

Regrettably, one of the distasteful things that have happened to the cherished field of journalism is the entrance of fake news material in to the media industry fuelled by a concept called citizen journalism, a trend that has unceremoniously made every Tom, Dick and Harry a media practitioner without minding whether they are qualified or not.

The situation has become too entrenched that people no longer know the difference between real news and fake news simply because the people have formed the habit of swallowing hook, line and sinker anything they read without really knowing that all that gliters are not gold.

Subsequently, one truth Mr. Nwangwu and his folks fail to understand is the fact that we are first of all Nigerians before any other political consideration. It does not matter whether we belong to A-party or B-party as the case may be. This is because no nation on earth will allow us into their country on the basis of being a member of one political party or another.

Hence, in his false narrative against the Minister, Mr. Nwangwu ignorantly declared General Dambazau guilty of the arms scandal that rocked the military in the past administration by saying this: "The inadequacy of this event is demonstrated by the fact that Dambazau is equally guilty." I waited patiently to read the source of his tale, but could not find any.

Mr. Nwangwu without establishing the truth of his story went ahead to pass his myopic and jaundiced verdict on General Dambazau just because he want to appease his paymasters.

For the sake of our national interest, let me educate Mr. Nwangwu a little even if his lust for his paymasters money will not allow him to put out a Corringendum concerning his article.

The fact that Ihejirika took over from General Dambazau does not mean the latter did what the former was accused of doing.

The writer should also note that Air Marshal Umar, who incidentally comes from same state as Dambazau who took over from Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin was indicted but Petinrin was not indicted.

Accordingly, Petinrin and Lieutenant General AB. Dambazau served as Chiefs of Air Force and Army Staff at the same time with clean records.

The writer should also note that Alex Badeh took over from Petinrin, but Petinrin was not indicted.

Therefore, is it just because General Dambazau is serving under Buhari’s government that he must also be indicted for playing no part in the arms deal?

After all, General Dambazau, Petinrin and Ibrahim served as Chiefs of Army, Air Force and Navy, respectively at the same time, with Dike as the Chief of Defence Staff, so why going after Dambazau?

Further investigation has shown that during their time, when General Mukhtar was the National Securty Adviser, there was no single arms deal as all procurements were done by the Ministry of Defence only.

Besides, when Boko Haram insurgency began, General Dambazau had already retired from the service. Perry Brimah And His Unwarranted Attack on Dambazau

I read the article written by one Dr. Perry Brimah where he shamelessly expressed his crass ignorance and understanding of the statement made by the Honourable Minister of Interior, retired lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau during his recent visit to Zamfara State to make on-the-spot assessment of the activities of bandits in the state.

The Minister while in the state said persistent attacks on the residents of Zamfara State could affect food security in the state. His words: "Since those affected by the killings are largely the agrarian rural dwellers, the activities of bandits will have serious impact on agriculture and food security.''

However, one Dr. Perry Brimah in his analysis of the matter mischievously interpreted General Dambazau's statement to mean that government was paying more attention to food security than the lives of the people.

Before I continue, I want to ask if Dr. Brimah is truly a doctorate holder? I ask this question because I do not see the reason a man with doctorate degree or title could not understand that there is a linkage between food and life.

The linkage also mean that the less the availability of food, the more the threat to lives due to malnutrition, hunger, diseases and even death.

And likewise, less food could also mean more health cost to the people but most importantly, the people of Zamfara State rely mostly for survival on the food they produce. So, an attack on the means of their livelihood is also an attack on their lives.

And that is why the Minister said: ''We are committed to working closely with the state government to deploy more security resources to the state (Zamfara) ... This administration will continue to go to any length to protect the lives and properties of the citizens because any single innocent life lost has a devastating effect on the nation and is unacceptable.''

Is there anything complex or too difficult to understand in the Minister's statement?

Therefore, one wonders where Dr. Brimah got his facts from and how his interpretation of the statement means that government is paying more attention to food security than to the lives of the people.

Is it a must that Dr. Brimah must comment on what General Dambazau said even when it seems he has no idea or clear understanding of what the Minister said?

Instead of embarrassing himself publicly by misinterpreting and misrepresenting what General Dambazau said during his visit to Zamfara State, is it not better that he keep quite and be counted among the wise ones rather than exposing his crass ignorance to the reading public of the world? Haba "Doctor!"

Re: I Respectfully Urge You to Resign: A Letter to General Dambazau

I read the scurrilous remarks contained in the letter addressed to the Minister of Interior, retired Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (CFR) by one Tope Oriola with amusement.


I tried to locate the central theme of the letter but could not because apart from the fact that it was laced with many lies, unfounded claims and imaginative assumptions, the letter also betrayed logic and lacked coherence, substance and clarity of ideas and facts.


For Example, Mr. Oriola claimed in his letter of infamy that he contemplated having General Dambazau (PhD and Associate Professor) invited to the University of Alberta, Canada to give a talk on Civil-Military relations in Nigeria, but the question is, ''Who is Tope Oriola to invite General Dambazau to Canada? What does he (Oriola) do in the University?


Again, Mr. Oriola tried to raise dust about Dambazau's Ministry and competence in handling issues when he ignorantly asked why General Dambazau have remained silent despite extra-judicial killings in Nigeria?


Now, if there is anything Mr. Oriola's letter have done, it has just exposed his hidden ignorance not known to many Nigerians. Of a truth, it is very pathetic to observe that a writer who wants to invite General Dambazau to a University in Canada does not even have the idea of what Nigeria's security activities and composition entails. Chai, Nigeria is finished with people like Oriola having access to the media. No wonder there is misinformation everywhere!


Anyway, let me inform Mr. Oriola as a concerned citizen that General Dambazau is one Minister who knows his onions and have demonstrated in words and in deeds that he is one man whom Nigerians can entrust their security challenges in to his hands and go to bed with two eyes closed.


Hence, contrary to Oriola's claim, on Monday, January 8th, 2018, General Dambazau in his capacity as Minister of Interior met with the governors of Adamawa, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa States alongside the Director-General of the State Security Services, Inspector-General of Police, Commandant-General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development as well as six Commissioners of Police from the listed states. The purpose of the meeting was on how to tackle the crisis situation in the country from the root instead of merely addressing the symptoms.


Also, on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018, General Dambazau held another crucial meetings with the heads of internal security agencies over the same security situation in the country. One of the many issues that came up in the communique issued was on the issue of small arms and drug trafficking and abuse, where the Minister was obviously quoted as saying ''Without the firearms and drugs, those who partake in violence would not have the courage to carry out the kind of violence taking place in the country.'' The Minister further stated that there are approximately 500 million assorted firearms in West Africa and out of this figure, 350 million representing 70 percent of the illegal firearms are found in Nigeria.


In another security programme recently held with the Inspector-General of Police, Commissioners of Police and other senior officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the Minister stated that the firearms and drugs that are the drivers of crime in Nigeria are coming from Libya, Yemen, Mali, Niger and Chad Republic.


In lieu of this, arrangements have been concluded to hold a conference of Security and Agriculture Ministers from West and Central African nations. The conference will comprehensively address all issues associated with the proliferation of firearms in the region.


The Minister have also directed the Inspector-General of Police to enforce the law on illegal possession of firearms as well as retrieving all the illegal firearms from wrong hands across the country.


In the infamous letter, Mr. Oriola also tried to wipe up the primordial, irrational and senseless sentiments by trying to give ethnic and religious colourations to the crisis between farmers and herdsmen in some parts of the country. May I at this juncture confess that one of the reasons Nigeria is facing the challenges it is facing today is because of uninformed writers like Mr. Oriola and his co-travellers who shamelessly and embarrassingly peddle ignorance on sensitive national issues.


 Instead of joining hands with relevant authorities to find lasting solutions to the conflicts, Mr. Oriola derive more joy in exacerbating the crisis by spreading lies and stereotyping a particular religion and tribe. Let me remind him that in life, 10 percent is what happens but 90 percent is how we react to them. Hence, I had expected him to let Nigerians know that the farmer/herdsmen conflict has no religious or ethnic colouration in line with the Geneva Spiritual Appeal which declared that religion should not be used to justify violence.


Besides, Mr. Oriola failed to look at the cause of the problem as well as providing solutions. There is no gain denying the fact that farmers/herdsmen crisis is a regional problem over the sharing of land and water resources. This is not only a Nigerian problem as it can be seen in countries like Kenya, Uganda and Sudan.


Hence, contrary to the unfounded claims by Mr. Oriola that General Dambazau has been silent, here is what the Minister said recently: ''Today, in the front burner of issue of security is rural banditry and herders/farmers conflict. These are issues that have alot of dimensions and for us to deal with them; there is the need for us to look at it from multi-dimensional approach. The Minister further stated that ''We tend to look at the issue as a local problem, but it is not, it is rather a  national and regional problem. It is not a religious problem, it is not an ethnic problem; it is a problem that has to do with resource sharing, water and land. 


There is no doubt that Mr. Oriola's goal in the letter was to paint General Dambazau black without knowing that even if he forgets the great achievements of the Minister, the internet never forgets. Hence, a simple search would have saved him the embarrassment he brought to himself as well as the noble pen profession.


On the issue of Kidnapped School girls in Dapchi, let me once again inform Mr. Oriola that General Dambazau was part of the Federal Government delegation that visited the Government Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State on Sunday. So, his argument and claims on this matter are unfounded.


Finally, I want to offer a free piece of advise to Mr. Oriola that if he has been peddling imaginative lies on soft targets, he should not try such with General Dambazau who have distinguished himself in every national assignment given to him because every bologna lie against him will never go unanswered and suffixe it to say that he has not done well for his masters who paid him to write. He has done a very poor job. Therefore he should refund them their money and come for a lecture on how to do it better.

The news report emanating from a national daily and published by some social media outfits insinuating that the Honourable Minister of Interior, retired Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau has been appointed as the head of Security Committee in the planned visit of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso to Kano State on the 30th of this month is a product of outright misinformation, mischief making and irresponsible journalism.

Let it be clearly stated that General Dambazau is a law abiding Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and by the nature of the Oath of Office he took to render unreserved services to the country, he is not permitted to engage in any socio-political activity or engagement outside the purview of the Ministry assigned to him by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Where the Executive Governor of Kano State who is also the Chief Security Officer of the state has scheduled January 30th for similar activity in the state, it will amount to unnecessarily overstressing the capacity of the security agencies in the state should another political activity or engagement be fixed on the same date.

Therefore, dropping the name of the Honourable Minister of Interior who is the administrative head of all the internal security agencies in the country in an activity not connected to the established rules of the ministry is unwarranted, outrageous and unacceptable.

The Minister cannot and will never be part of any activity capable of breeding crisis or breaking law and order in any part of the country let alone participating in a crisis-prone activity in Kano State.

While members of the public are advised to ignore the story, the editorial members of the newspaper are challenged to redeem their image by apologizing to the Minister and members of the reading public for deliberate misinformation which is contrary to the motor of their newspaper which says 'Trust is a burden.'

Lets be fair to people please; no matter who they are or where they come from. Justice is not love. Justice is giving to people what they deserve. In this case, General Dambazau deserves a pat on the back!

Dambazau is one Minister I cannot criticise because he is a great intellectual, an associate professor for that matter.
