Nigeria’s Basketball team D’Tigers have crashed out of the 2016 Rio Olympics after losing 86-69 to host nation Brazil, making it their fourth loss on the spin following previous defeats to Argentina, Spain and Lithuania. Nigeria won the first quarter 16-15, but the next three quarters were won by Brazil and despite all efforts put in by the Nigerian lads, the Brazilians were just too tactically sound and defensively acute for the Nigerians to break down.

Wife of Oyo State Governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi has honoured the traffic policewoman, Maryam, who was spotted controlling traffic under the rain few days ago.
Mrs Ajimobi presented a letter of commendation and cash gift to Maryam through the commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Atinuke Osunkoya at the Police Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan on Thursday, August 4th. Another photo after the cut.

The Nigeria Police in Kaduna State have arrested 22 persons suspected of committing various offences ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and car snatching.
The State Commissioner of Police, Sanusi Lemu, while parading the suspects at the command Headquarters, disclosed that they were arrested at various locations in the state following a major operation by his men.
The commissioner added that arms and ammunitions, four stolen vehicles among others were recovered from the criminals.
He explained that among the suspects include a 5-man kidnapping gang that had been terrorizing motorists along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway and another gang that specialized in car snatching.
The commissioner however, reiterated the command’s commitment to rid the state of criminals and hoodlums as he said his men have been deployed to all high risks areas to curb the menace. He therefore, urged residents to be vigilant and report anyone suspected to be a criminal to the Police or other security agencies.

State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has said he is considering reducing the number of work days in the state from five to three days in a week, to enable the government cut salaries.
He dropped the bombshell while briefing journalists on the state of affairs in Imo, at his residence in Owerri, the state capital on Friday.
According to Mr. Okorocha, the reduction of work days would enable workers to attend to other activities that would generate money to supplement their monthly salaries to take care of their families.
“I encourage Imo workers to find additional things to do to support their families because of the economic situation we are facing in Nigeria.
“We are considering to reduce the working days from five to three in Imo, so that workers will use the rest of the days to work and support their families”, he said.

Mr. Okorocha, who was not specific on when it may commence, added that Imo government was equally planning to review workers’ salaries downward.
He said that in spite of the current payment of 70 percent of salaries to workers, the state still paid the highest salary scale among South-Eastern states of Abia, Anabmbra, Ebonyi and Enugu.
“Directors in these other South-Eastern states receive something a little above N90, 000 while in Imo they receive more than N100, 000.
“We intend to clear salary arrears up to July by next week. After that, we will consider downward review of salary to workers to be at par with other states of South-East”, he said.

On the just-concluded rerun election, Mr. Okorocha commended Imo people for electing the candidates of APC in Imo North Senatorial District, Isiala Mbano and Oru East State Constituencies.
He said with the victory, APC had shown that it was strong in the South-East and should be given its due right.
“With these victories, it shows that APC candidates won most of the national and state assembly seats during the 2015 general elections.
“I call on the leadership of the National Assembly (Senate), to correct the abnormality in its leadership which resulted in an opposition member occupying the Deputy Senate President seat”, he said.
On his urban renewal programme, Mr. Okorocha said the relocation of Ekeukwu-Owerri market, Orji and Nekede Mechanic villages to Avu was irreversible.
“From Monday, Aug. 1, a taskforce to enforce the relocation order for the mechanics will commence work, and I am advising vehicle owners not to take their vehicles to any of these places from Monday”, he ordered.

This beautiful young doctor identified as Dr. Nneoma Uhuegbu died in a fatal accident around Umuikaa on her way to Umuahia from Aba last night. She was on her way to Umuahia to collect her induction gown as a fresh medical doctor. Her induction is on the 28 at ABSU. According to reports, 12 passengers and driver involved in the accident survived except for her. This is so sad! May her soul rest in peace. Amen! Below is what her friend Ogbonnaya Bonky Chibuzor wrote on Facebook:
“The audacity of death. The reckless, arrogant enemy of humanity has struck again. On this occasion, its wicked hands did us an irreparable damage which is permanent. It has snatched away a humble, brilliant, amiable, creative and hard-working doctor from us, in a rude and shocking manner. Nneoma has spent 8 years of her life studying medicine & surgery. Their induction into the medical body was scheduled to hold this Thursday 28 July. What a loss!!!.. What happens to the project I wanted you to be part of? what of the lives you planned to save as a medical doctor should we forget about it? No!!!! Hey, I am dreaming, some one should tell me am hallucinating. We are all aware of death’s recklessness, yet we raise our heads with pride, as the faithful children of God Almighty, who believe in His holiness, the resurrection of Jesus and His superior power over all mundane activities and interests of this wicked world.
