United States lawmaker, Rep. Marlin Stutzman, has joined Senator Ted Cruz in condemning the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, calling for urgent action to protect the beleaguered community.

The lawmakers’ recent comments follow reports of widespread violence and killings of Christians by jihadist groups in Nigeria. According to reports, thousands of Christians have been killed, and many others have been kidnapped and displaced in 2025 alone.

"We must use the targeted tools we have at our disposal to end it," Republican Stutzman of Indiana said in a post shared on his X handle.

"Implementing Sharia law and condoning the murder of innocent people is barbaric."

Kend

Cruz earlier stated that Nigerian Christians were being "targeted and executed for their faith by Islamist terrorist groups." He added that Christians are being forced to submit to Sharia law and blasphemy laws across Nigeria.

Background

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna also condemned the silence surrounding the persecution, saying, "Christians are being hunted and slaughtered in Nigeria for their faith — and the world stays silent. If this were any other group, there’d be global outrage."

The lawmakers' call for action comes amid growing concerns about the worsening security situation in Nigeria, where extremist groups such as Boko Haram continue to wreak havoc on innocent civilians.

Meanwhile, the United States House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa has approved measures urging President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Nigeria due to the widespread persecution of Christians.

The persecution of Christians in Nigeria is a pressing concern, with the country accounting for 90% of all Christians killed globally each year, according to a 2024 report by the Observatory for Religious Freedom in Africa.

For instance, between October 2019 and September 2023, at least 55,910 people were killed, and 21,000 others were abducted in attacks linked to terrorist groups and religious extremists.

Islamic terror groups Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) are primarily responsible for the violence in the northeast.

The Nigerian government has been criticised for its handling of the situation, with lawmakers accusing the government of turning a blind eye to Christian killings and allowing extremist groups to operate with impunity.

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has also warned that Nigeria's security forces have failed to curb the violence and that, in some cases, local officials have been complicit.

The proposed sanctions could mark a significant shift in US-Nigeria relations, with potential economic and diplomatic implications for Nigeria. The US House Foreign Affairs Committee had advanced a resolution to increase sanctions and pressure on the Nigerian government over the rampant persecution of Christians and other minorities in the country.

This decision comes after a congressional hearing where lawmakers condemned the Nigerian government for failing to protect Christian communities from escalating violence.

SaharaReporters reported on Wednesday that the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, appealed to the international community not to re-designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over religious freedom violations.

Although he acknowledged the worsening Christian situation in Nigeria, especially in Northern Nigeria, his argument was that such a move could derail ongoing efforts to rebuild trust and promote interfaith harmony under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking at the launch of the 2025 World Report on Religious Freedom by Aid to the Church in Need (ACIN) at the Augustinianum Hall in Vatican City, Kukah described Nigeria’s situation as tragic but cautioned against punitive international actions that could worsen divisions and hinder cooperation between religious leaders and the government.

He acknowledged that Nigeria has experienced years of violence, kidnappings, and destruction caused by jihadist and bandit groups, resulting in thousands of deaths and displaced persons.

He said, "For over 15 years now, these murderous gangs of Islamicists and jihadist groups have found their way into our country, wreaking havoc, destroying lives and properties, ravaging farmlands and leaving huge parts of the country empty of human existence.

“Along with this, a culture of uncontrolled banditry, thousands of communities have been destroyed, with thousands of lives lost.

"The country has witnessed an unacceptable surge in internal displacement in most parts of the north, especially around the middle belt states.

"The biggest challenge for us is the appropriate language to use in describing this tragedy. The reactions have been confusing. Early narratives spoke of farmer-herder clashes, climate change, cattle rustling, outright criminality, etc.

“With the emergence of Boko Haram and the targeting of Church structures, destruction of schools, hospitals, the kidnapping of priests, the religious, seminarians and other pastoral agents, the murderous gangs invoking the words like, allahu akubar as their anthem of death, there was no other way of speaking of persecution of Christians by these jihadist groups rather than calling them religious persecution targeted at Christians.

"Then came the sacking of communities and the occupation of swaths of lands by these terrorist and murderous groups. These groups would later target Muslims who did not believe in their brand of Islam. Today, the floods of blood in Nigeria have no boundaries. This is why the debate over what is happening to us has become so confusing within and outside Nigeria. Although we cannot find the right words, the simple truth is that Nigerians are dying for a living."

Kukah noted that the confusion over the appropriate language is understandable.

Kukah explained that Nigerians feel vulnerable and unprotected irrespective of their faiths, ethnicity, or social classes. A significant part of our social life has literally collapsed as many citizens now fear large gatherings for social

See how Buhari sent DSS after Sunday Igboho for demanding an end to Fulani attacks in South West, but look at the way our Yoruba man is turning blind eye to carnage from Fulanis on Yoruba soil.. 'o ma se o'

The Sultan will come out to condemn social media but has never for once called his Fulani people to order.. for how long are we going to continue pretending that all is well in this country?

If a Southerner steal food due to hunger, they'll make arrests and jail the person but Fulanis are going about tormenting and killing innocent people trying to make ends meet yet the law enforcement agencies look away.

Ogun Village Head Attacked By Herders, Yoruba Group Lambasts Governor, Police Over Inaction

The Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has issued a stern call on Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and the State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, to immediately apprehend and prosecute the herders responsible for the recent violent attack on Chief Oniyide Olubayo, the Baale of Balogun Village in Yewa North Local Government Area.

A Baale is usually appointed by an Oba (king) to oversee a village, settlement, or smaller community within a kingdom.

According to the group, Olubayo was reportedly attacked on Tuesday by herders while returning from Ilaro.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the village head had stopped by the roadside upon seeing a heated dispute between a group of farmers and herders.

In a bid to mediate and calm the rising tension, one of the herders allegedly launched an attack, slashing Olubayo’s elbow with a cutlass before fleeing the scene.

In a statement released on Friday and jointly signed by the Convener, Olusola Badero, and the Home Director, Princess Balogun, the Yoruba Union condemned what it described as the persistent failure of both the state government and security agencies to tackle the growing menace of herders’ violence across the state.

“For far too long, Fulani herders have been terrorising our people. They invade farmlands, destroy crops, assault our farmers, and when challenged, they resort to brutal attacks — maiming, killing, and sometimes raping our women. Yet, no one has been held accountable,” the statement read.

The union lamented that despite several reports of such attacks in remote communities across Yewa, Imeko, and other parts of the state, the state government had shown what it called “a disturbing level of indifference.”

It accused Governor Abiodun and the police commissioner of maintaining “complicit silence” while Yoruba ancestral lands continued to come under threat.

“Why should people migrating from other regions invade our homeland, destroy our farms, and harm our people, while the governor and police authorities remain silent?” the group queried.

“If the governor and the police commissioner are not complicit through their inaction, they should immediately arrest those who attacked Chief Oniyide and bring them to justice.”

The Yoruba Union emphasised that the Yoruba people, known for their civility and respect for law and order, should not be mistaken for cowards. It said the community’s patience was wearing thin and warned that continued attacks could force locals to resort to self-help measures.

“Our people deserve dignity and respect. We are Omoluabi — law-abiding citizens — but we will not continue to fold our arms while invaders destroy our lands and livelihoods. The government must act now, or the people will take measures to defend themselves,” they said.

The group urged the state government to adopt modern ranching policies, aiming to curb open grazing and prevent future conflicts between farmers and herders.

It noted that cattle rearing is a private business and should not come at the expense of other citizens’ safety or livelihood.

“Ogun State is not a banana republic. It is a Yoruba-speaking state with its heritage and traditions. If herders must rear cows, they should build ranches and operate within the law,” the statement stressed.

Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá warns that if Governor Abiodun continues to show indifference to the repeated attacks on innocent citizens, he should resign from office and allow someone capable of defending the lives and properties of Ogun residents to take charge.

“For years, our people have suffered attacks from herders without justice. If the governor cannot protect his people, he should step aside. The safety and dignity of the Yoruba people are non-negotiable," it said.

The union also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society groups in Ogun and across the Southwest to unite in demanding concrete action against what it termed “a sustained threat.

PoliticsRe: Will Ipob Killings In The East Be Added To Christian Persecution In Nigeria? by Ezeama400: 11:16am On Oct 17, 2025
BATified2023:
Good morning to you all and hope you are enjoying your day, lately I have seen many talks about Christian persecution in Nigeria and those propagandists I hear it from or see it on their page especially Nigerians are the usual suspects who felt lost out in the last election and they feel the need to always disparage Nigeria at any chance given.

Most times when you try to engage those Nigerians moving around with this propaganda, they are always empty with no substance in them. Many of the will say they are doing it as payback for bring back our girls, many will mention Debora case in Sokoto.

Now I will b forced to ask the question, when did Deborah case happened and aside that we have heard crimes committed by terrorists who kill irrespective of religion.

So a statistic came out on twitter regarding those Nigerians who carry the falsehood on their head to paint the government bad and it is only coming from a section of the country.

Now the question I want to ask those people is this

" In the south east, ever Nigerian knows they are majorly Christians. Ipob have been killing them since over 4 years ago and it's on record that ipob is classified among the recognised terrorist group in d world. Will ipob killings of Christians in the south east be added to Christian persecution in Nigeria?

Virtually all families in the south east have had a taste of killings from ipob, will that also count as part of Christian killings?

During nnamdi kanu reigning days of terror, he has boasted a couple times of ending saboteurs ( ibos who don't believe in the struggle) and we remember the infamous line of burying 2000 heads with ikonso and a suspect caught later said they got 30 which are majorly Christians, will this also be added as part of Christian persecution?

Simon ekpa also did the same thing and had his own killing sphere, same with gentle the Yahoo.

He even killed young boys on camera and also boasted of many kidnappings and killings, will that also be added as Christian persecution because I don't know if Debora happens to be the only Christian or her live have more value than that of those killed in the south East.
Ipob is not a terrorist group in the eyes of sane people…

US. Uk and European Union rejected the terrorist tag on Ipob
