Less than 24 hours to the National Assembly election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended the Senate Chief Whip, and Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu over alleged anti-party activities and other offences.

APC in a letter conveying Kanu’s suspension said the suspension was with immediate effect.

Kalu has been at loggerheads with the leadership and members of Abia APC over the allegations the former Abia Governor has been undermining and sabotaging the party in the state.

According to the letter dated February 21, the former Abia Governor was suspended for “acts of disobedience and gross anti-party activities”.

The letter which was jointly signed by the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, Paul Nwabuisi, State Secretary, Chief Chidi Avajah, and the State Chairman, Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu, added that Kalu who has been at loggerheads with many APC chieftains in Abia, “has remained unrepentant and without remorse despite several warnings”.

APC explained that Kalu’s suspension came after “thorough investigations and recommendations of the Disciplinary Committee set up by the Igbere Ward A in Bende Local Government of Abia State.”

The Abia APC leadership further stated that Kalu’s suspension was in consonance with Article 21B(i-v) of the APC Constitution, which he violated.

The letter read in part: “You are hereby suspended from the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

The former Governor has been accused of working against the APC governorship candidate, Chief Ikechi Emenike.

He has also been accused of promoting the interests of the Action Peoples Party(APP) against Abia APC where his younger brother, Mascot Uzor Kalu is the governorship candidate.

Meanwhile, Kalu in an interview last Tuesday, publicly admitted and justified supporting and promoting the candidacy of his younger brother, Mascot, saying he is fit to lead the state.

Kalu also claimed that the APC governorship candidate never informed him formally that he was in the governorship race.

He also accused Emenike of abusing him and bearing grudges against him for decades, hence, his reluctance to work for him.

Abia APC which described the Senate Chief Whip as a drowning political desperado, accused him of working hard to destroy the party for his selfish interests.

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has said that news making the rounds that it has collapsed its structure in the Southwest to support the Presidential candidate of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is untrue.

In a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, the party described the news as “a figment of the imagination of shameless political desperados”.

Martins said the party is battle ready to confront any cheap propaganda aimed at dragging its name into disrepute including but not limited to the endorsement of presidential candidates of other political parties.

No individual or group of individuals including the National Chairman of the party can endorse a Presidential candidate different from that of the party as that decision solely rests with the appropriate leadership organs of the party such as the NWC or NEC, the party’s statement said.

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election on Saturday, the Peoples Redemption Party has debunked rumours that it has collapsed its structure in support of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.

The Ogun State chairman of the party, Samson Okusanya while briefing newsmen in Abeokuta, stressed that the party is still in the race to win, adding that its presidential candidate remains Abdulateef Kolawale Abiola.

Okusanya noted t[b]hat it became important to address the rumour owing to the delicate nature of the matter.[/b]

He noted that the reputation, integrity and hard work of the party over the years are about to be undermined by the indiscretions of some people.

He further said, “For the first time since 1983, the PRP is participating in presidential elections and the visibility of the party across various levels is both encouraging as it is threatening to the antagonists of the common people who have continued to seize and remain in power for self-enrichment and for the oppression of the masses.

“With a promise to bring liberation to the people of Nigeria, the PRP has fielded Gubernatorial candidates, Senatorial Candidates, House of Representatives candidates and House of Assembly candidates.
