Business / Re: Business Idea For Nigerians (Virgin Ideas) by Fabiens(m): 12:30am On Apr 20, 2013
mrnestyy1985:

Hi bro,

Thanks for your views on my Virgin Ideas.i will try to butress more on your opinion and i hope im able to answer your constructive judgement with critical analysis.

"institutionalized corruption, poor power supply"
institutionalized corruption. if i understand you well, you mean corruption in higher places right?I think this ideas i have shared has nothing to do with politics rather they are private businesses waiting for the government to grasp/flow along.

About the hotspot/internet idea- have you wondered why MTN dropped their cost when a new telecom company(Glo) entered the market.that is because they still make huge profit and wouldnt like to loose their customers to competitors.and they sometimes offer free connection because they understand they will get people attracted and they dont have to pay anybody for offering free connection.
"If you bring a feasible hotspot idea to them, they will run it themselves" you can see it as creating an office for yourself inside the mtn office.if they can steal your idea, then they can make you head of the idea.

Graduate database idea- thanks for the loophole. i tried as much as possible to cover this highlighted loophole by providing an additional random lecturer review which i think might go a long way in closing this loophole in malpractise but if you think it will not be effective you might be right.

Anybody interested in this graduate database idea can choose to utilize the power of crowd.Gossips flows within any student environment.how about including annonymus lecturers rating i.e trust worthiness.where student can anonymously rate lecturers.so when the employers make a search and reads the lecturers feedback, they can as well browse the lecturers rating.it will help build feedback confidence for prospective employers.

Please guys, feel free to share your opinion on this. You understand the system better than me.I used to be a Uniben student before a travelled abroad so my stretegies are based on past experience. So let me know your views and see how we can work it out.

Thanks onces again Fabiens

Billgates one laptop per child was only a marketing strategy he used in entering Africa.too bad it didnt work because only Africans can develop Africa

Well, I can obviously see you are a cool guy smiley By institutionalized corruption, I mean everyone is corrupt such that corruption is seen as a normal thing. From the garri seller who dents her tins so she sells less garri, to the bank md, who skims of bank profits. It is regarded as normal and unfortunately makes it hard to find any business done the proper way.

Therefore, some serious checkpoints have to be put in place for the graduate database. What I can further add is this: Any business you want to start here, first check if people know about it. It is very hard to sell something to someone when he has no idea about it. The true business in such a case becomes "teaching the person, and educating him on this product's uses". Plenty of tips there wink

Business / Re: Business Idea For Nigerians (Virgin Ideas) by Fabiens(m): 3:07am On Apr 18, 2013
Very good contributions by the OP. I respect people who share with others.

Unfortunately, most of these ideas won't work in Nigeria. Don't get me wrong, they are brilliant ideas. The problem is the OP has applied a Western/European way of thinking to his ideas. Nigerians think rather differently. They are some loopholes in the arguments. Nigeria is not ready for some of these businesses. You have to learn to crawl before you run. I am not a pessimist, infact I have aways put my money down in risky ventures; but some nigerian aspects have not been taking into consideration e.g. institutionalized corruption, poor power supply.

1 example: On the hotspot. I knew internet in the EU costs $10 monthly, 100MByte/sec and unlimited data. I immediately felt networks here were cheating. However, when you take account of how much they spend on diesel just to keep a mast online, and the bribes they pay, you find out there are hidden costs which are not normal to a business. Of course they still make a killing in Nigeria (large market), yet few can offer unlimited plans, at our already slow speeds. The best way to start hotspot is to get your own satellite. In short, research yourself, it isn't as straightforward as it appears. MTN, Glo are not sharing anything with you. If you bring a feasible hotspot idea to them, they will run it themselves.

2 example: University Graduate Database. Sorry but Nigeria is too corrupt. Some universities yes are stricter than others, but with money, you can get fake papers, and pay off whoever does verification in the university. All he needs is a special folder for anytime someone inquires. You say random lecturer, but who? How to verify legitimacy of the random lecturer? This is a country where people fake oil importation papers.

I wont go into other ideas, the truth is most of them are very good (1 idea, I am sure someone stared recently), but I was just struck by the western style of thinking. Whoever takes up any of them, must think locally AND act locally. At the end of the day, I dont wish to be negative, I am just adding my 2 cents. One last example. Bill Gates has his "1 laptop per african child" project. BUt how man children go to school? How many actually LEARN not just go, but learn in school? How many children have food to eat everyday? He should have started with "good health for all", or "no child goes hungry". He however was thinking like an American, and expected Africa to work like America. Wrong.

I am very sure I must have loopholes in my deductions, so feel free to criticize me, I love learning. smiley

Religion / Why Are We Nigerians Always Waiting For Miracles? by Fabiens(m): 11:18pm On Apr 14, 2013
I don't know where this attitude came from, but I notice a lot of people who constantly pray without taking action. Men pray for Range Rover Sport yet never think, how do I earn more money? The ladies pray for a rich husband but don't ask themselves - what have i done for myself that would attract such men?

I watched this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVq10BwzQoI. Its on the subsidy scam. I was frustrated when someone said - "Only God will help us". He should know Heaven helps those who helps themselves.

I think we should reduce this our miracle waiting behaviour, waiting for our turn to hammer, Instead, we should look ourselves in the mirror and ask, what have I done to get myself closer to my goal? You need to take matter into your hands. Also Corruption wont disappear no matter how many times people pray for Nigeria. Things will only change when we as people get up and revolutionize this our government. This same principle applies to our daily lives.

Summary: Less waiting for miracles; More Action.

Recently, I was shocked when I asked a babe what are hobbies were? She said - going to cinema, and going to elegushi! Somehow I didn't blame her for the comment. Most of us in Nigeria don't understand the concept of having fun. Its not all pouring moet on elegushi bar floors. Even my friends also think of the same things all the time - shayo, bar, shoprite. I suspect all birthday parties are celebrated in elegushi grin

Being an adventurer at heart, I searched for things Lagos might offer, I found out there were jet ski centers in Lagos. Optimel Waterpsorts and Tarzan Marine. Sent them emails these evening for more info.

Now, I am thinking, which other hidden jewels are there in Lagos(or Nigeria).
Maybe you own a tourism or fun center, I will be happy if you post website/contact details here. That way, I can show my friends there are other things to do apart from movies and elegushi. Quad biking? Bungee jumping? Sky diving?(optimistic)grin Drag Lane strips? Camp Sites? Tourist centers? Functional Game reserves/zoos? Kite surfing? Paragliding? Rafting? Casinos? Helicopter Rides of Lagos? I might be over optimistic but a pessimistic mind accomplishes nothing.

Lets spice up this country's 24/7 grind...

Romance / Re: Why Do I Seek Dominating & Abusive Men? Is It Normal? by Fabiens(m): 12:38am On Apr 12, 2013
There is nothing wrong with you. I understand her perfectly well wink. I had a girl like that. We made a good team grin. Main reasons for such behaviour is usually molestation while you were young, abusive father or high sex drive or all 3. You might also like adrenaline-filled events if I get your type. Car racing? Bungee jumping? You derive joy from the risky things in life, probably why a dominating bad guy would get your juices flowing. Its just individual preference. Some people are wild and do crazy sh1t. As most have advised, most important thing is not to get physically abused.

And no need to insult her. She is being open, be constructive.
Car Talk / Re: How To Deal With Bad Mechanics? Advice by Fabiens(m): 11:30pm On Apr 11, 2013
Thanks for all the replies. Because of some replies, I have to add - they are not roadside mechanics, but an auto repair shop. I just don't want to name names not to spoil someone's business.

On the money issue, is it a must to pay the last bill? Can I just complain, take the car and go to another auto centre? Its a shoddy job. What would you do in my situation.

I agree with some posters, next time, I will google and research first. It shouldn't be difficult to read up.

Car Talk / Re: Mercedes Benz M-class 2008 Vs Honda Crosstour 2010 by Fabiens(m): 10:27pm On Apr 11, 2013
Haha, I like the support the M-class.

My point is more like this - seeing as for the same amount of money, I would be getting an older car with the benz, with lots more mileage on it, would the crosstour be a better buy? Or the older benz still trumps it?
Politics / Lagosians Hear "Boko Haram", "Bomb", And "Lagos" And Start Praying by Fabiens(m): 11:44pm On Apr 09, 2013
Ignore the pun in the title.

I was mildly surprised by the furore of comments when news got around on a boko haram plot to bomb 3rd mainland bridge. Seriously, what did we expect? If your neighbour can't sleep, you also won't sleep. It is sad to hear all the bad news from the north, senseless killings and all. The opinion in the south (not just lagos), is more of - let them bomb themselves, they just shouldn't come here. The truth is, if the north is unstable, eventually the south will be unstable. History teaches that.

I believe we should all be concerned for people in the north. Most killed are innocent people. None of the bigwigs are attacked. Yes, Nigeria is not one ethnic group, and we might not speak their language, but we should be bothered and look for a way to solve the issue. France recently demonstrated that with Mali. A terrorist controlled Mali is just a springboard to attack other countries, and western powers. Negligence in the north is what has given them the audacity to try raids on the south. A stitch in time saves nine.

If I am wrong in my analysis, please correct me constructively.
Car Talk / Mercedes Benz M-class 2008 Vs Honda Crosstour 2010 by Fabiens(m): 11:23pm On Apr 09, 2013
Thinking of getting one of a Mercedes Benz M-Class 2008 or Honda Crosstour 2010. The benz, because I like the brand, and prefer the jeep, and the crosstour because of its unique shape. Budget is 4.5m. The crosstour foreign used with 10-15km costs slightly above that. Now the benz, not so sure, what kind I will get at that price? Saw some models with 60-70km around 4m.

Now what kind of benz would I be getting with that kind of mileage? I know they are supposed to be durable, but being an older car, not sure on the mileage. Those who have driven either/both models, what are the cons/good qualities of the cars? Thanks.
Car Talk / How To Deal With Bad Mechanics? Advice by Fabiens(m): 10:55pm On Apr 09, 2013
There is a new place we decide to patronise.

The first car we took there was an 2005 Honda. The key wasn't moving freely in the door lock and ignition. They fixed it, having to tamper with the steering wheel column. When they brought it back, the steering wheel was veering left and right. Thinking it was just an alignment issue, we sent it back. It was returned, but with a slight veer to the left. Not a big problem, we decided to ignore (tired of the bills) and move on.

Second car was a Kia Sorento, It too had steering problems. Again assumed it was an alignment issue. When it was returned, noticed the 1st gear engaged painfully, lots of noise, and drag. All other gears were fine. Sent it back, and we were told we had to change clutch plate. Gave the go ahead. Now it was returned today, and this evening, it seems the clutch has given up already. It was a problem just to park the car as (from my little car knowledge), the clutch kept slipping and disconnecting the engine. Had to restart 4 times, just to move about 2 metres. The recent bill of 90k is yet to be paid for. Left to me, I will just refuse to pay this bill and find another auto centre instead of taking it back for another shoddy job.

Opinions?

EDIT: They are not roadside mechanics. Its an auto repair shop, owner just came over from abroad. Used it because it was closer to home.

It was this year, march to be exact. I was called back in the office itself. I checked various sites and cac's site itself. all sites said 4k. so i was surprised to find out 10k in their office.
I guess price has changed then. They should do more to keep their site (cac) updated.
