Gunmen suspected to be bandits on Monday attacked Sabon Gyero community in Millennium City, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing one person and abducting seven others. PUNCH Metro gathered that the attackers stormed the community in large numbers in the early hours, breaking into a residence and abducting three women and four children. During the raid, the bandits were said to have also attacked a phone charging centre, where they shot and killed a young man identified as Abdullahi Lawal, popularly known as “Kurma.” Lawal, who was deaf and dumb, reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to a hospital but died before reaching medical care. Sources in the community said the assailants also stole several mobile phones and laptops from the charging centre before fleeing the scene. The deceased was later buried in the community in accordance with Islamic rites.Reacting to the attack, the Commandant of the Joint Task Force in the area, Uwaisu Yunusa, told our correspondent that the operatives responded promptly after hearing gunshots. “Our men heard gunshots and quickly moved to the area. We tried to pursue the attackers, but they had already escaped before our arrival,” he said. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has strongly condemned the ongoing military escalation involving Iran, the United States and Israel, warning that continued hostilities could trigger a wider regional conflict with severe consequences for global peace and civilian safety. In a statement posted on Saturday on his official X account, Guterres expressed deep concern over the growing confrontation and urged all parties to halt military actions and recommit to diplomacy. “I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East,” he said. “The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermines international peace & security.” The UN chief stressed that all countries involved must adhere strictly to their obligations under international law, particularly the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. “All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the UN. “The Charter clearly prohibits ‘the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations,”he stated.Guterres warned that continued military exchanges could rapidly escalate beyond current battle lines, destabilising an already fragile region and placing millions of civilians at risk. “I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. “I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table,” Guterres advised. Reiterating the United Nations’ long-standing position, he emphasised that diplomacy remains the only sustainable path to resolving international disputes. “I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. “The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security,” he said. The statement comes amid rising international concern following intensified military exchanges among the United States, Israel and Iran, prompting renewed calls from global leaders and international organisations for restraint and urgent dialogue to prevent further escalation.
