PoliticsTompolo’s Associate Tonlagha Engages Lobbyists To Improve Us-nigeria Ties by Faith0(op): 10:53pm On Feb 02
Nigerian billionaire Matthew Tonlagha has signed a lucrative contract with US lobbying firm Valcour designed to improve Abuja’s relations with Washington, documents seen by AFP on Monday showed.

The Nigerian government has already entered the lobbying fray, with national security chief Nuhu Ribadu in December striking a $750,000-per-month deal with US firm DCI to lobby President Donald Trump’s administration. The moves come in response to unsubstantiated allegations by Trump in late 2025 that violence in Nigeria amounted to the “persecution” and “genocide” of Christians. The Nigerian government and independent analysts reject that framing of Nigeria’s myriad, overlapping conflicts, which has long been used by the US religious right.

DCI’s stated role is to help the government in Abuja communicate “its actions to protect … Christian communities and (maintain) US support in countering west African jihadist groups and other destabilising elements”.

Tonlagha’s $120,000-a-month contract with US group Valcour stipulates that for six months, the latter will lobby US media, the Trump administration and US Congress “for the purpose of strengthening the bilateral relationship between the US and Nigeria”.

The contract is published on a US government platform where lobbyists are required to register their ties to foreign governments.

On Christmas Day last year, the US military bombed areas of northwestern Nigeria.

The Nigerian government subsequently said the strikes had targeted Islamic State group fighters, members of the Lakurawa jihadist group and “bandit” gangs.

It is unknown how many fighters may have been killed and from which groups. Local and international journalists have only confirmed damage to farmland and civilian buildings, and injuries among civilians.Valcour was founded in 2023 by Matt Mowers, who served as a White House adviser in the US State Department during Trump’s first term after advising his election campaign.Tonlagha is vice-president of Tantita Security, which specialises in protecting oil facilities.

Tantita is owned by Oweizidei Thomas Ekpemupolo, a high-profile former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

MEND was created to oppose the appropriation of local oil by foreign companies and the Nigerian government.

In the 2000s, the rebels attacked oil and gas facilities in the oil-rich south and kidnapped workers before a government amnesty was introduced in 2009.Ekpemupolo was subsequently awarded lucrative contracts with the Nigerian government to protect oil installations.

He is a supporter of President Bola Tinubu, backing his bid for re-election in 2027.

Foreign AffairsTrump Orders Re-Opening Of Venezuela Airspace by Faith0(op): 12:00am On Jan 30
President Donald Trump said he had ordered commercial airspace over Venezuela to be reopened Thursday, nearly four weeks after the US military operation to topple Nicolas Maduro.

Trump told a cabinet meeting he had just spoken to Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez “and informed her that we’re going to be opening up all commercial airspace over Venezuela.”American citizens will very shortly be able to go to Venezuela and they will be safe there. It’s under very strong control,” Trump said at the White House.Trump added that he had instructed US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy “and everybody else concerned, including the military, that if you would, by the end of today, I’d like you to have the airspace over Venezuela” opened.

About two hours after Trump’s announcement, the Federal Aviation Administration announced on X that it had removed four notices to airlines warning about airspace in the region, including over the South American nation.Trump added that he had instructed US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy “and everybody else concerned, including the military, that if you would, by the end of today, I’d like you to have the airspace over Venezuela” opened.

About two hours after Trump’s announcement, the Federal Aviation Administration announced on X that it had removed four notices to airlines warning about airspace in the region, including over the South American nation.

The alerts “were issued as precautionary measures and are no longer necessary,” the FAA said.

“We’ve got this, Mr. President,” Duffy said on X. “We are clearing the way for travel between the United States and Venezuela.”

American Airlines announced plans to reinstate service, saying it was in contact with US officials and would schedule flights “pending government approval and security assessments. The United States has kept Venezuelan airspace closed to commercial flights since the January 3 military operation that captured leftist leader Maduro, who now faces trial on drug and terrorism charges in New York.

Trump also said that major oil companies were “going to Venezuela now, scouting it out and picking their locations.”Following the fall of Maduro, Venezuela’s Rodriguez quickly signed oil agreements with Trump, who has declared that his administration now controls the sector — the main engine of the Venezuelan economy.

PoliticsUS Senate Vote To Avert Government Shutdown Expected To Fail by Faith0(op): 6:07pm On Jan 29
US senators looked likely to reject a key vote Thursday to avert another damaging shutdown in President Donald Trump’s second term, with Democrats blocking funding for his immigration crackdown after the killings of two activists by federal agents.

Lawmakers in the Republican-led upper chamber of Congress are being asked to approve a six-bill spending package intended to fund more than three-quarters of the federal government through the rest of the 2026 fiscal year. But Democrats have vowed to block the measure unless funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is peeled away and renegotiated to include guardrails on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the most generously funded US law-enforcement agency.

That would leave the chamber’s 53 Republicans short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation towards final passage, leaving Washington bracing for another disruptive shutdown as negotiations slide toward a Friday night deadline.

“The bottom line is simple: the American people support law enforcement, they support border security, but they do not support ICE terrorizing our streets and killing American citizens,” said Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

“ICE needs to be held to the same basic standards that any law enforcement agency is asked to follow.”funding lapses, hundreds of thousands of public employees could be placed on leave or forced to work without pay, with economic disruption rippling outward.

The standoff — which comes with particularly high stakes in a year in which the entire House and around a third of the Senate are up for reelection — has been triggered by an incendiary row over immigration enforcement.

Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse protesting Trump’s deportation efforts in the northern city of Minneapolis, was shot dead Saturday by border patrol agents — just weeks after immigration officers killed another activist, Renee Good, blocks away.

The incidents shattered what had appeared to be a stable bipartisan funding deal and refocused congressional debate on the conduct of immigration officers operating under Trump’s aggressive crackdown.Talks are ongoing’ –
Schumer has demanded that DHS funding be split off from the broader spending package and addressed separately, paired with new legal limits on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and related agenciesDemocrats say they are prepared to pass the other five bills immediately — covering departments such as defense, health, education, transportation and financial services — if Republicans agree to that separation.

Democrats are pushing for an end to roving ICE patrols, tightening requirements for search warrants, establishing a universal code of conduct governing the use of force, prohibiting officers from wearing masks and mandating body cameras and proper identification.

Republican leaders have resisted splitting the package, arguing that altering the legislation would slow passage and risk triggering the very shutdown Democrats say they want to avoid.

The House and Senate both have to approve the exact same bill texts before they can become law. But the House is on a break and not expected to return until after the shutdown deadline, complicating any attempt to revise the package.Yet signs of movement have begun emerging, with some Republican senators indicating openness to advancing the five non-DHS bills alongside a short-term funding measure to keep Homeland Security operating while talks continue.

Lawmakers have also raised concerns about the consequences of a DHS shutdown for agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during severe winter weather.

The White House has also become more directly involved in the negotiations as the vote approaches, according to US media, with Trump aides exploring whether a temporary DHS funding extension could defuse the crisis.

Democrats, however, have warned they will not accept informal assurances or executive actions in place of legislation

PoliticsReps Pass N58.47tn 2026 Budget Proposal For Second Reading by Faith0(op): 5:53pm On Jan 29
The House of Representatives on Thursday passed the N58.47 trillion proposed 2026 budget for the second reading.

The budget estimate is hinged on macroeconomic stability, improved security, and increased allocation for the execution of capital projects across the country.

Titled “The Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity,” the proposal was presented to a joint session of the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu on December 19, 2025.

Addressing his colleagues on the general principles of the Appropriation Bill, House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere said President Tinubu assumed office during a difficult period, adding that the reforms currently being implemented were expected to come with pains and inconveniences.

“Development that is not sustainable is not development at all,” he said, noting that the ongoing economic reforms would, in the long run, usher in multi-layered prosperity.

He called on lawmakers to support the proposal, highlighting reasons to be optimistic about the future, including a projected 3.98 per cent economic growth rate for 2026, a drop in inflation to 14.45 per cent from about 25 per cent, improved revenues, export growth, and expanded foreign direct investment.

According to him, the naira has stabilised at about ₦1,400 to the dollar, down from over ₦1,800, while Nigeria’s external reserves have climbed to a seven-year high of about $47 billion, sufficient to cover more than 10 months of imports. He said, “We have not printed a single naira since this government came into office. That fiscal discipline has helped stabilise the economy.”

Total revenue is projected at ₦34.33 trillion against total expenditure of ₦58.18 trillion, leaving a deficit of ₦23.85 trillion. Non-debt recurrent expenditure is pegged at ₦15.25 trillion, while capital expenditure stands at ₦26.08 trillion.

“This is a departure from the past, where recurrent spending outweighed capital investment. Here, capital expenditure is higher, which is what drives real development,” Ihonvbere said.

The 2026 budget assumptions include an oil benchmark of $64.85 per barrel and oil production of 1.84 million barrels per day.

Sectoral allocations show security and defence taking priority, with ₦5.41 trillion earmarked to address insecurity and food challenges; infrastructure receiving ₦3.56 trillion; education, ₦3.54 trillion; and health, ₦2.48 trillion.

He urged lawmakers to perform their duties on the budget proposal, saying, “We are not saying the government is perfect, but it is our duty, as representatives of 360 constituencies, to guide it to do the right things at all times.”

With no contributions from lawmakers, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas put the budget proposal to a vote, and members overwhelmingly supported its passage for the second reading.Meanwhile, the Speaker announced a two-week recess to enable members to work on the budget ahead of its final passage when the House resumes on February 17, 2026.

PoliticsIraq PM Candidate Maliki Denounces Trump’s ‘blatant’ Interference by Faith0(op): 3:15pm On Jan 28
Iraq PM candidate Maliki denounces Trump’s ‘blatant’ interference
Iraq’s main candidate for the premiership, Nouri al-Maliki, on Wednesday denounced Washington’s “blatant interference”, after President Donald Trump threatened to end all support to the country if Maliki took the post.

The US has held significant sway over Iraqi politics since leading the 2003 invasion that ousted long-time ruler Saddam Hussein. We categorically reject the blatant American interference in Iraq’s internal affairs,” said Maliki, the only former Iraqi prime minister to have served two terms since the invasion. We consider it a violation” of Iraq’s “democratic system”, in place since 2003, he added on X.

Maliki fell out with Washington during his premiership (2006-2014) over growing ties with Iran and accusations that he pushed a sectarian agenda.

But the 75-year-old shrewd politician remained a central figure in Iraq’s politics and a powerbroker whose approval is considered indispensable to any governing coalition.

On Tuesday, Trump said that Iraq would make a “very bad choice” if Maliki were selected for the top post.

He warned that because of Maliki’s “insane policies and ideologies, if elected, the United States of America will no longer help Iraq”.

Maliki was endorsed as Iraq’s next prime minister by the Coordination Framework, an alliance of Shiite groups with varying links to Iran that has emerged in recent years as the main ruling coalition.

– ‘Until the end’ –
Since the invasion, Iraq has long been a proxy battleground between the US and Iran, with successive governments negotiating a delicate balance between the two foes. But Iraq’s new prime minister is set to return to power at a time of seismic changes in the Middle East, as Tehran’s regional influence wanes and as Washington threatens possible military intervention in Iran.

In his post on Wednesday, Maliki said the US involvement “infringes upon the Coordination Framework’s decision to nominate” its candidate.

He added that, in line with that decision, he “will continue to work until the end, in a way that achieves the higher interests of the Iraqi people”.

Several Iraqi political sources told AFP that the coalition is set to meet soon to discuss Trump’s ultimatum.

“Efforts are underway to hold a meeting amid a complicated situation,” a source close to the Framework said.He added that there were internal divisions within the coalition over supporting Maliki, but that a majority vote ultimately settled the issue.

Maliki’s backers are now pushing to maintain his candidacy and “not back down”, he added.

US representatives in Iraq have been lobbying against Maliki, according to Iraqi sources and diplomats in Baghdad.

Trump’s statement came days after Secretary of State Marco Rubio voiced similar concerns in a telephone call with outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

The US had also sent a letter to Iraqi politicians saying that Washington views Maliki negatively, political sources told AFP.Iraq’s new premier will be expected to address Washington’s longstanding demand that Baghdad disarm Tehran-backed factions, many of which are designated terrorist groups by the United States.

Last month, Iraqi officials and diplomats told AFP that Washington demanded that the incoming government exclude Iran-backed armed groups.

Before Trump’s call, an Iraqi political source said that the Coordination Framework was set on moving forward with the nomination, believing that Maliki could eventually allay Washington’s concerns.

Maliki “thinks differently today”, an Iraqi politician told AFP.

After decades of conflicts and chaos, Iraq has recently regained a sense of stability. But it is struggling with weak economic growth and cannot risk punitive measures by the US, which has already sanctioned several Iraqi entities, accusing them of helping Tehran evade sanctions.

Foreign AffairsTurkey Urges US To Start Nuclear Talks With Iran by Faith0(op): 12:18pm On Jan 28
Turkey’s top diplomat urged Washington to start nuclear talks with Iran in an interview broadcast on Wednesday, as US warships arrived in the region ahead of a possible strike over Tehran’s protest crackdown.

“It’s wrong to attack Iran. It’s wrong to start the war again. Iran is ready to negotiate on the nuclear file again,” Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television in English.

“My advice has always been to our American friends: close the files one by one with the Iranians. Start with the nuclear issue and close it. Then move on to the others,” he said.

Fidan’s comments after a US naval strike force led by an aircraft carrier took up position in Middle Eastern waters, US Central Command said on Monday, without revealing its precise location.

Washington has not ruled out new military intervention against Tehran over its harsh response to the protests, which, according to rights groups, saw thousands of people killed within days.

Since Iran began its crackdown earlier this month, accompanied by a nationwide internet blackout, US President Donald Trump has given mixed signals on intervention.

NATO-member Turkey, which shares a 530-kilometre (330-mile) border with Iran, has often expressed opposition to military operations targeting the Islamic Republic.Last week, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the unrest in Iran as a “new test” for Tehran, pledging Turkey would “stand against any initiative” that would drag the region into chaos. He said he hoped diplomacy and dialogue would help Iran get through this “trap-filled period”.

Speaking to Al-Jazeera, Fidan said the problems with Iran should be tackled individually.

“Do not treat them as a package. If you put everything together as one package, it will be very difficult for our Iranian friends to digest and truly process it,” he said.

“In some cases, it may even seem humiliating for them. It would be hard to explain not only to themselves but also to their leadership.”

Fidan also urged Iran to build trust in the region.

“When I was in Iran two months ago, I was very frank with my Iranian friends. They need to build trust in the region,” he said. They need to pay attention to how they are perceived by regional countries”.

Foreign AffairsTrump Warns Of ‘Bad Things’ If Republicans Lose Midterms by Faith0(op): 8:51am On Jan 28
Donald Trump warned Tuesday of “very bad things” if Republicans lose the US midterm elections, as the US president kicked off a travel blitz under the shadow of unrest in Minneapolis and voter worries about the economy.

At a rally in Iowa — one of the first stops for primary campaigns in US presidential elections — Trump said his party must win both the Senate and the House in November despite his own poor approval ratings.I’m here because I love Iowa, but I’m here because we’re starting the campaign to win the midterms. Got to win the midterms,” second-term president Trump said in his speech. If we lose the midterms, you’ll lose so many of the things that we’re talking about, so many of the assets that we’re talking about, so many of the tax cuts that we’re talking about — and it would lead to very bad things.”

But Trump’s economy-focused speech was largely overshadowed by events in the neighboring state of Minnesota, where two people have died this month in a deadly immigration crackdown.

Trump told Fox News earlier he would “de-escalate a little bit” after federal agents shot 37-year-old nurse Alex Pretti in Minneapolis at the weekend, but he largely avoided talking about it in his speech. The White House says Trump will be making weekly trips across the country ahead of the midterms, in which voters have historically punished US presidents.

Trump’s team has increasingly focused on the economy after polls showed mounting voter anger over the issue of affordability one year since the billionaire’s return to power.

In his Iowa speech, the 79-year-old president repeated his claims about a “Golden Age” in the United States and insisted prices were falling for most goods.

But he admitted that it may be hard to convince voters in November’s midterms, saying that in past elections “if something happens, the screw turns with the voters” no matter how good the president.Trump has raged at what he calls unfair opinion polls, but numerous surveys have showed him with low approval ratings. A New York Times/Siena poll last week put the figure at 40 percent.

Foreign AffairsGermany Offers €1m Reward For Arrest Of Militants Behind Berlin Blackout by Faith0(op): 12:02pm On Jan 27
Germany is offering a one-million-euro ($1.2 million) reward for information leading to the arrest of suspected far-left militants whose arson attack caused a massive blackout in Berlin, the interior minister said Tuesday.

The electricity outage left roughly 45,000 homes and around 2,200 businesses without power for nearly a week in the middle of winter in the southwest of the German capital.

Police are hunting members of the far-left “Vulkangruppe” (Volcano Group), which claimed responsibility for the early January blackout in several online statements.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt on Tuesday vowed to “strike back”.

“I think it’s appropriate to underscore the seriousness of the situation with a reward of this magnitude,” Dobrindt said.Authorities have deemed the online messages from the mysterious Vulkangruppe “credible”.

According to Germany’s BfV domestic intelligence agency, the group has been active since 2011 and is also believed to be behind several other arson attacks in and around Berlin. It claimed responsibility for two sabotage attacks targeting electric carmaker Tesla’s factory just outside Berlin.

Dobrindt said police would launch a publicity campaign to solicit tips and tout the reward, including leaflets and posters in Berlin’s subway system.

Dobrindt, a conservative ally of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, also vowed to put more resources into fighting “left-wing extremism” more broadly and urged greater police powers to use facial recognition technology and collect digital data.

Politics2027: ADC Leaders Can’t Be Taken Seriously Until They Offer Alternative Policies by Faith0(op): 1:35pm On Jan 26
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) cannot be taken seriously ahead of the 2027 general elections unless they present clear alternatives to the reforms being implemented by the Federal Government.

Dogara, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said the opposition party has so far failed to articulate a people-centred vision that distinguishes it from the administration of President Bola Tinubu.Speaking on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, the ex-speaker said public discourse from the ADC has been largely driven by anger rather than ideas.“I haven’t heard the discussion centering on the people. All I hear is anger about one or two things. What vision or idea are they rallying behind? I have yet to see that,” Dogara said.

He added that criticism alone would not suffice, stressing that Nigerians expect viable policy alternatives.

“Until they bring alternatives to what the President is doing — and we look at them critically and see they are better than what we have — we cannot take them seriously. In the absence of that, everyone knows it is just gimmicks that will take them nowhere,” he said.

In July 2025, an opposition coalition adopted the ADC as its political platform ahead of the 2027 elections. The coalition includes prominent political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, ex-ministers Rotimi Amaechi and Rauf Aregbesola, former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark.

The ADC has vowed to unseat the APC in the next election, citing rising poverty levels and economic hardship across the country.

However, Dogara dismissed what he described as rhetorical attacks, urging opposition figures to move beyond complaints.

“That is the kind of talk I hear,” he said. The former lawmaker also called on Nigerians to exercise patience with the ongoing reforms of the Tinubu administration, particularly in the areas of security and the economy“I think we are on the right track, even if people are not feeling it. When we talk about the challenges relating to security, that’s taken us how many years to get to the point where President Tinubu took over,” he said.

Dogara noted that no government could reverse long-standing challenges overnight, adding that the current administration has shown leadership in sectors previously neglected.

“There’s nobody with a magical wand that can make everything disappear overnight. But from the time he assumed office until now, we have seen leadership in areas that were previously neglected,” he said.

CrimeUS Steps Up Military Action, Intelligence Sharing With Nigeria by Faith0(op): 9:20am On Jan 26
The US military is increasing materiel deliveries and intelligence sharing with Nigeria, Africom’s deputy commander told AFP, as part of a broader American push to work with African militaries to go after Islamic State-linked militants.

The Pentagon has also kept open lines of communication with militaries in the junta-led Sahel countries of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali, Lieutenant General John Brennan said. The increased cooperation with Abuja follows Washington’s diplomatic pressure on Nigeria over jihadist violence in the country, but also as the US military is becoming “more aggressive” in pursuing IS-linked targets on the continent.Under the Trump administration, “we’ve gotten a lot more aggressive and (are) working with partners to target, kinetically, the threats, mainly ISIS,” Brennan said in an interview on the sidelines of a US-Nigeria security meeting in the Nigerian capital last week.

“From Somalia to Nigeria, the problem set is connected. So we’re trying to take it apart and then provide partners with the information they need,” he added.

“It’s been about more enabling partners and then providing them equipment and capabilities with less restrictions so that they can be more successful.”

Last week’s inaugural US-Nigeria Joint Working Group meeting came roughly a month after the US announced surprise Christmas Day strikes on IS-linked targets in northwest Nigeria.Africa’s most populous country is roughly evenly split between a mostly Muslim north and mostly Christian south. Though millions live peacefully side by side, religious and ethnic identity remains a sensitive topic in a country that has seen sectarian violence throughout its history.Brennan told AFP that US intelligence would not be limited to protecting Christians.

He also said that following the US strikes in northwestern Sokoto state, American support going forward would focus on intelligence sharing to aid Nigerian air strikes there, as well as the northeast, where a jihadist insurgency by Boko Haram and rival breakaway ISWAP has raged since 2009.

Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) is “our most concerning group”, he said.

Analysts have been tracking US intelligence flights over the country in recent months, though some have questioned whether air support alone can push back armed groups that thrive amid widespread poverty and state collapse in rural areasStill collaborate’ with AES militaries –
US-Nigerian cooperation going forward will involve “the whole gamut of intel sharing, sharing… tactics, techniques, and procedures, as well as enabling them to procure more equipment,” Brennan said.

The initial strikes targeted militants linked to Islamic State Sahel Province, typically active in neighbouring Niger, Brennan said.

Analysts have voiced concerns about ISSP’s spread from the Sahel into coastal west African countries like Nigeria.

The impact of those strikes so far has been unclear, however, with local and international journalists unable to confirm militant casualties.

Asked about their effectiveness, Nigerian information minister Mohammed Idris said last week it was “still a work in progress”.In the Sahel more widely, Brennan said “we still collaborate” with the junta-led governments in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, which have broken away from their west African neighbours and largely shunned the West.

Security cooperation has been curtailed since coups toppled civilian governments across the three countries from 2020 to 2023.

“We have actually shared information with some of them to attack key terrorist targets,” he said. “We still talk to our military partners across the Sahelian states, even though it’s not official.”

Brennan also said the US is not seeking to replace its bases in Niger after its troops were pushed out by the ruling junta.

“We’re not in the market to create a drone base anywhere,” he said, referencing the shuttered US drone operations in Agadez. We are much more focused on getting capability to the right place at the right time and then leaving. We don’t seek long-term basing in any of the western African countries.”

PoliticsNo Presidential Ticket For Kwankwaso In 2027, Keyamo Declares by Faith0(op): 9:08am On Jan 26
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has said that the former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has “boxed himself into one of the tightest corners in his political career” over what he described as his refusal or indecision to accept an earlier political olive branch from the All Progressives Congress.

Keyamo, who issued a statement on Sunday, noted that he had “always admired Engr. Mohammed Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso from a distance,” but argued that recent political developments had left the former governor facing a narrowing set of choices ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to him, Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition is at the centre of his current dilemma.

The statement partly read, “Kwankwaso wants to be President, but none of the major political parties will pick him as a candidate in 2027. APC & PDP are going South & ADC’s ticket is Atiku’s to lose.

“Atiku is the owner of ADC (argue with your keypad, if you like). Only a major political Party can win a Presidential election in Nigeria.

“NNPP is still a one-State Party, and with the recent wave of defections from NNPP (including the Governor himself), it is doubtful if it can maintain its grip on Kano in 2027. A leader is only as strong as his devoted lieutenants.”

He further argued that the former governor’s calculations rule out support for a northern presidential candidate in 2027.Kwankwaso will not support a Northern candidate because that ends his own Presidential ambition since he may have to wait for another 16 years after 2027 to get a shot at the Presidency – 8 likely years for the Northern Candidate and another 8 likely years when it rotates to the South again.

“That’s a gamble he WILL NOT TAKE. He will be 86 years old by then. So, this entirely rules out an ATIKU-Kwankwaso cooperation in 2027”, Keyamo’s s statement continued.

Keyamo said that based on prevailing political realities, 2031 appears to be Kwankwaso’s most realistic presidential window, but warned that decisions taken in 2027 would be decisive.

“Based on the above calculations, the only pathway for Kwankwaso is in 2031, but the alliance he builds in 2027 will be crucial to his ambitions in 2031.

“If his grip on Kano slips in 2027, it will water down his clout and influence in 2031 to be handed a Presidential ticket by any of the major Political parties. This is the time he can cash in on his presumed dominance of Kano politics and take a chance,” he addedThe minister narrowed Kwankwaso’s realistic alliance options to three political parties, noting that each comes with significant limitations.

“Kwankwaso’s only chance of a realistic alliance now with a major political Party is actually narrowed down to the PDP, the APC or the Labour Party (only if Peter Obi returns there and picks the 2027 Presidential ticket, and he agrees to run as VP candidate to Obi). But all three options present their own challenges,” Keyamo said.

On the Peoples Democratic Party, he stated: “With the PDP now gasping for breath, it may be easier for Kwankwaso to return to PDP on some terms (like taking over the entire structure in Kano and some North West States and returning Kano to PDP).

“And that will signal the death of NNPP. But with the zoning of the Presidential ticket to the South, that would mean a suspension of his 2027 Presidential ambition till 2031.”

On the APC option, Keyamo said, “If Kwankwaso decides to pitch tent with the APC, he is in no position to dictate so much terms to the Party. With the exodus of key figures from NNPP to APC in Kano, the APC’s structure in Kano is now in better stead to challenge the NNPP in 2027.

“The APC is therefore not so desperate for a Kwankwaso in Kano, but would be glad to welcome him into the Party. He still remains an asset. But one thing is sure: the APC cannot throw its entire structure in Kano under the bus for a Kwankwaso, especially with the Governor parting ways with him.

“However, the attraction of the APC for him is that the APC still has the national spread and structures to retain power in 2031. So, an APC option for Kwankwaso will also mean a suspension of his Presidential ambition till 2031.”

On the Labour Party, he was categorical, stating, “The 2027 Labour Party option for Kwankwaso is narrower because he simply cannot and will not run as Vice-Presidential candidate to Peter Obi. Take that to the bank.

“His own people will not even support him to give a likely fresh 8 years to the South (forget all the noise of ‘I will serve just one term)Keyamo concluded that Kwankwaso now stands at a critical political juncture with potentially career-defining consequences.

“From the scenarios above, Kwankwaso is in a very difficult political crossroads. The decision he makes now may retire him permanently from politics or revive his Presidential ambition.

“But one fact is clear: just like late Buhari and the CPC, without a handshake with another major Party, he will remain a local champion with his NNPP, but that too may soon vanish with the present predicament of the Party in Kano,” his statement concluded.

One of the paradoxes of economics is threatening to create a food crisis later during the year. Last year January, escalating food prices dragged headline inflation towards 35 per cent. A 50 kilogram bag of rice was going for N80- 100,000 – depending on location. Governor Bago of Niger State was contemplating placing embargo on sale of food commodities, especially rice to buyers outside the state. He was not alone. The Federal Government actually introduced a food committee to patrol Nigerian highways and discourage hoarding by middlemen – who were blamed for price hikes everywhere.

The Nigerian Customs Service and even the Army and Police got involved in arresting transporters accused of smuggling food. Few people in government were willing to admit that poor harvest and low productivity were partly responsible for the price increase.

Fortunately, as every level 100 Economics understands better than politicians and their appointees everywhere, the principle of supply and demand was at work. When supply is low, for whatever reason, prices of commodities sky-rocket; and when there is more supply, prices drop on the aggregate. High prices induce producers, in this case, farmers, to work harder to produce more; in the hope of benefiting from prevalent high prices. Thus despite the increasing insecurity and ransoms demanded by bandits, and paid, most farmers still went to work to expand land brought under cultivation and to produce more food. Granted, for some commodities, food importation increased available supply significantly; resulting in steadily lower food prices. But, there can be no dispute that the glut now being expressed with regard to tomatoes was not totally influenced by imports. This is mostly a local phenomenon.

Surely, Nigerians should be happy with food prices falling. In reality, consumers are; farmers are in trouble. That is the boomerang effect when market forces are left to operate without a guiding hand. Farmers, nationwide, have been generating losses because the scarcities and high prices, which lured them to produce more, have vanished.

A glut now exists and it is driving prices further down. That is bad news for farmers and will soon be bad news for other Nigerians; because the low food prices presently enjoyed will soon end and prices will start shooting up again. The reasons for concern bothering on alarm are easily explained; and the need for pro-active measures is very clear.

Hunger is getting worse, not better in West Africa

“Nigeria among worst as W’Africa hunger deepens – UN, Report, January 17, 2026.

In every country and at all times, some individuals take it upon themselves to focus on one critical aspect of national life; in the strong belief that governments, even in the richest countries cannot do everything. Knowledgeable and concerned citizens can and should contribute, without expecting any reward, towards the betterment of society. Late US President John F Kennedy, 1917-1963, summarized this idea best during his inauguration address in January, 1960. “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Unfortunately, most Nigerians have been fed on the notion that governments should provide for them, while they give nothing in return. That is perhaps the root cause of our under-development. Fortunately, there is still a small minority of Nigerians willing to help this country.

I turn to some of my sources in nine Northern states each time thoughts turn to food – which is a passionate matter. Food unites the President and the pauper like nothing else does. Everybody must eat; otherwise nothing gets done.An army marches on its stomach”, said Napoleon Bonaparte, 1769-1821, after losing the war against Russia to hungry troops. Two hundred and twenty million Nigerians constitute an army which must be fed for rapid and sustainable progress to be achieved. Right now, we are heading for trouble after our short-lived reprieve from high food prices. According to the report by the United Nations World Food Programme “no fewer than 55 million people across West and Central Africa are expected to face crisis levels of hunger or worse during the June-August 2026 lean season, unless urgent funding and humanitarian action are mobilized.” Three months constitute 25 per cent of the year. Furthermore, Nigeria sits in the midst of four countries – including Chad, Cameroon and Niger – which account for 77 per cent of the population at risk. Nobody needs a doctorate degree in demographics to know which country will be most affected – Nigeria.

Why proactive action is needed

“A stitch in time saves nine”. That was wisdom drummed into our heads in primary school in Lagos. Nigerian governments, not just the FG, would need to develop urgent pre-emptive steps to avert a food crisis worse than what the nation experienced in 2023 to late 2025. After reading the WFP report, I decided to conduct field work; by calling long-term associates in the Northern States for an update on the food situation, particularly, prospective production. The situation is actually more alarming than even WFP projects.

Low prices have discouraged planting generally. Insecurity and ransom payments render farming risky and highly unprofitable in 2026. Millions of farmers are either dropping out or returning to subsistence farming. That is the ultimate bad news.Consequently, a poly-crisis is developing in Nigeria’s rural areas. Pervasive insecurity, declining purchasing power, deepening poverty and imminent food scarcity will soon be happening at the same time and strengthening each other in a manner that might make finding solutions more difficult. Of all the problems confronting us, averting another food crisis is the one government will need to address very urgently. Fortunately, this is one instance in which there are historical precedents to guide us.

Boom-and-bust cycles occur when agriculture is left entirely to market forces. Scarcity raises prices; high prices induce more production and excess supply follows; prices plummet; supply shrinks once again to drive up prices.

The Babangida administration, borrowing from the experiences of several food-surplus nations, addressed this cycle by embarking on the installation of food silos nationwide with Decree 4 of 1987, which created the Directorate of Food, Roads and Rural Infrastructure, DFRRI. Since then Nigeria has had the capacity to procure and store excess food during the harvest period and to release the commodities when scarcity threatens. Ideally, proactive state governments should also have created food reserves facilities to complement federal efforts. That, unfortunately, has not been the case. States have neglected their responsibilities in this regard – despite the fact that every state has appointed a Commissioner of Agriculture. The FG has been left as the sole food provider for 220 million Nigerians. The food silos must be opened up urgently and stocked to avert a food disaster later in the year.

Finally, the seeming food supply surplus might not be totally explained by increased aggregate output. Poverty is getting worse. High prices have created a shift in demand.

Most consumers have dropped certain food items from their shopping list. Weak demand creates an illusion of increased supply. A roasted plantain seller in Lagos Island, we have been monitoring, has experienced low sales – despite lower prices. Paradox.

Politics5 Soldiers Killed, Many Injured In Boko Haram Suicide Attack In Borno by Faith0(op): 8:03am On Jan 22
Five soldiers have been killed when a Boko Haram suicide bomber rammed into a military convoy in the Timbuktu triangle in Borno State, while an unspecified number of troops were injured.

Security sources confirmed that two senior military officers, a major and a lieutenant, were affected in the attack.

“The attack caused significant damage to military equipment used for offensive and defensive operations in the weeks-long clearance operations,” said one of the soldiers.

He said the terrorists used a car loaded with explosives to ram into the military convoy.

The troops were returning from a clearance operation that successfully dislodged several insurgents camps and killed many of them when the attack reportedly occurred.

“Yes, you know, every operation came with setbacks, but we overcame it. Unfortunately, we lost five soldiers in the incident. Manga (the Commander) is hale and hearty and the operation continues, thank you,” an officer who did not want to be named said.

He said armoured and logistics vehicles were destroyed when the van laden with explosives rammed into the convoy, on Tuesday.

It was learned that the corpses have been flown to Maiduguri, while officers who sustained injuries in the attack, have also been taken to hospital for medical attention.

Recall that on Monday, the Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) said they had cleared multiple terrorist camps and thwarted drone attacks in the area.

A statement by spokesman of the operation, Lt- Col Sani Uba, said in the ongoing Operation DESERT SANITY, arms and equipment were also recovered from the terrorists.

A statement, yesterday by Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer of the OPHK, said: “On Tuesday while consolidating at a harbour area approximately 6 km North of Chilaria, troops encountered II Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices, VBIED. Through vigilance and swift action, one VBIED was successfully neutralised.
