The Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies and the National Union of Electricity Employees at the Kano Electricity Distribution Company have commenced an indefinite strike over alleged poor working conditions. The strike, which began on Wednesday, followed the failure of the company’s management to meet workers’ demands after the expiration of a deadline on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. Following the commencement of the strike, Kano metropolis and its environs were thrown into darkness, while socio-economic activities were disrupted. Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, shortly after picketing the KEDCO head office, the Deputy President-General (North) of SSAEAC, Rilwan Shehu, lamented the lingering dispute between workers and the management. “We are here to lock down activities because they failed to comply with so many agreements. Since 2014, we have struggled with issues ranging from non-remittance of pensions to settlement of death benefits and poor working environment. “Many things are being sidelined,” he said. Also speaking, the Vice President (North-West) of NUEE, Ado Gaya, accused KEDCO management of bias in recent staff promotions.Just recently, they conducted a promotion exercise. For the past ten or eleven years, you can find staff here without any promotion. “But in their own personal interest, they are now doing selective promotions,” Gaya alleged. However, in a swift reaction, the company denied the workers’ claims. In a statement issued on Wednesday by KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, the management said that since assuming office seven months ago, it has prioritised staff welfare and entitlements, implementing a structured welfare programme to address outstanding issues, particularly staff pensions. “To date, over 80 per cent of the agreed 2025 pension remittances have been paid,” the statement said. According to the statement, a transparent promotion exercise was recently conducted in line with company policy, resulting in the promotion of 1,500 eligible staff. “KEDCO wishes to clarify that the recent picketing of its offices by the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) arose from legacy and current staff welfare concerns,” the statement read. Since assuming office seven months ago, the current management has prioritised staff welfare and entitlements, implementing a structured welfare programme to address outstanding issues, particularly staff pensions. “To date, over 80 per cent of the agreed 2025 pension remittances have been paid,” it added. Bala Sani said the management was actively engaging relevant stakeholders to resolve the issues and achieve lasting solutions. “The company assures all stakeholders that employee welfare remains a top priority and that all necessary measures are being implemented to restore stability and maintain industrial harmony,” news source https://punchng.com/power-outage-in-kano-as-kedco-workers-embark-on-indefinite-strike/

Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, on Monday arrested a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, in Abuja. Malami was reportedly picked up in front of the Kuje Correctional Centre shortly after a visit to the facility.A video circulating on social media shows the former AGF walking towards a vehicle believed to belong to the DSS moments after leaving the prison premises. Before entering the van, Malami was seen requesting the operatives to identify themselves by presenting their official identity cards.A security source, who confirmed the arrest to Vanguard, said there were several petitions against Malami bordering on alleged terrorism financing. “Yes, it is true that DSS operatives arrested Abubakar Malami, SAN. There are several petitions against him bordering on alleged terrorism financing,” the source disclosed. He added: “Terrorism and terrorism financing are serious offences globally. You will recall that when Abubakar Malami, SAN, served as Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, he publicly vowed that the government would not shield any individual linked to terrorism or its financing.” The source further stated that no responsible government would ignore such weighty allegations, regardless of the status of the person involved. “No responsible government will fold its arms or turn a blind eye to serious allegations of terrorism financing against any individual, no matter how highly placed. In this case, Malami, SAN,” he said. Explaining the process, the source noted that inter-agency cooperation is standard in security investigations. “In the course of investigations, we have what is called inter-agency cooperation. It is not uncommon for one security agency to hand over a suspect to another sister agency. In Nigeria, the DSS is statutorily responsible for investigating terrorism-related matters. It is best to allow them to do their job,” news source https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/01/dss-rearrests-malami-at-kuje-prison-after-bail-release/

President Bola Tinubu, and other prominent Nigerians have expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Imam Solih, describing him as a towering Islamic scholar and moral compass whose life was devoted to faith, unity and service to humanity. The revered cleric died on Monday in Abuja at the age of 75 after a brief illness. Leading the tributes, Tinubu, in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the late Chief Imam as a devoted servant of Allah and a bridge builder whose wisdom and humility endeared him to people of all backgrounds. According to the President, the late Islamic scholar played a significant role in promoting religious harmony, peaceful coexistence and community development. “Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu was a devoted servant of Allah, a bridge builder and a voice of moderation whose wisdom, humility and commitment to unity endeared him to people of all backgrounds. “The Muslim Ummah will never forget his invaluable contributions to religious harmony, community development and the nurturing of future generations through learning and exemplary leadership,” Tinubu said. Tinubu prayed Almighty Allah to grant the late cleric Al-Jannah Firdaus and comfort his family, the Ilorin Emirate and the Muslim Ummah.Similarly, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, described the death of the Chief Imam as “the end of an era.” In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sheu Abdulkadir Yusuf, the Speaker said Ilorin had lost a rare gem whose leadership and scholarship defined Islamic practice in the emirate for over four decades. “For over 40 years, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Imam Solih led the Muslim community with erudition, humility and devotion. His passing is a monumental loss to the Ilorin Emirate and the entire Muslim Ummah,” he said.He commiserated with the Emir of Ilorin, the Chief Imam’s family and the Muslim community, praying Allah to forgive the cleric’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest. Also reacting, the Senator representing Kwara Central, Saliu Mustapha, described the death of the Chief Imam as a monumental loss to Ilorin Emirate and the Muslim world. He said Sheikh Solih lived a life of sacrifice, scholarship and unwavering commitment to Islam, noting that his legacy of moral leadership would endure for generations. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), also expressed deep shock over the death of the Chief Imam, describing him as a great friend of the institution and a strong advocate of peace. In a statement signed by the university’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Kunle Akogun, the Vice-Chancellor said the institution benefitted immensely from the late cleric’s messages of peace and moral guidance. The Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has dismissed claims that police officers arrested peaceful protesters in Ekpoma, Edo State. He said the 52 suspects taken into custody were involved in criminal acts during the protest.Recall that the arrest of the protesters, most of whom were students of Ambrose Alli University, drew the ire of the parents of those arrested, especially after they had been remanded at Ubiaja Prisons by the state high court in Benin City.Speaking on Crime Buster with Desmond, episode six, weekend, Egbetokun said the police were frequently blamed for incidents of violence that occurred under the cover of protests. “That’s the usual false narrative against the police. When people have committed criminal offences during protests, we are used to narratives that the police arrested peaceful protesters. “Even those who burnt down police stations, murdered policemen, stole our arms during protests, Nigerians will accuse us that we are arresting people who are on peaceful protest,” the IGP said. He said further that the police had no issue with peaceful demonstrations and would continue to protect citizens who choose to protest lawfully. He added: “In the case of Ekpoma, of course, the police will not go after anybody who participated in a peaceful protest. We are not against peaceful protest. “We have made this clear many times and we continue to say it, that the police will not stop anybody who comes out for peaceful protest. If you want to come out for peaceful protest, what’s our business? We will protect you.” The IGP, however, said the police would not tolerate criminality under the cover of protests, noting that “peaceful protest is not a challenge to the police; it is those people who want to perpetrate crime, carry out violence, destroy property and loot shops during protest. Those are the ones we have problems with.In Ekpoma, yes, 52 of them were arrested during the protest, and those 52, from the report coming to me, are those people who were involved in the looting of shops and the vandalising of the palace of the Enogie of Ekpoma. That was the report I have, not arrest and detention of peaceful protesters. No. That’s the usual wrong narrative that we are used to in Nigeria. So I debunk that.” Recall that Federal High Court in Edo State had remanded 52 protesters over alleged malicious damage and armed robbery, following the protest against kidnapping in Ekpoma, Esan West LGA. The protesters, including students of Ambrose Alli University, AAU, were taken into custody after a demonstration on January 10 turned violent, leading to the vandalism and looting of shops and other properties. The presiding judge adjourned the case to February 26 for hearing and ordered that the suspects be remanded at the Ubiaja Prisons.Residents of Ekpoma and neighbouring communities had taken to the streets to protest the rising cases of kidnapping in the area, marching through major roads with placards and calling for government intervention. However, the AAU students remanded in connection with the protest have since been released, following Governor Monday news source https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/01/52-suspects-arrested-in-ekpoma-for-looting-vandalism-igp/
