PoliticsAkande, Enduring Democratic Pillar At 87 — Ex-minister by Faith0(op): 5:09pm On Jan 18
A former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has described former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, as one of the enduring pillars of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Adewole stated this in a statement released in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Sunday, to mark Akande’s 87th birthday.

He described Akande as “an elder whose life story is woven into the fabric of our nation’s political history, particularly in the South-West.”

Adewole stressed that Akande distinguished himself as governor through prudent resource management, a simple lifestyle and a rare sense of accountability in governance.

“As a former governor, he proved that leadership is not about personal luxury but about sacrifice, service and legacy,” he said.

Adewole, who is also the Secretary of the Akande Foundation, described Akande at 87 as “a bridge between generations,” noting that he has been central to the evolution of progressive politics in Nigeria—from the Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria to the Alliance for Democracy and, ultimately, the APC.

“His style of leadership—frank, principled and consistent—has earned him respect and admiration across political, ethnic and religious lines. He is known for speaking the truth as he sees it, without malice, fear or favour. In an age of political convenience, Chief Akande has remained a symbol of conviction,” he added.Adewole also described the elder statesman as a champion of progressive ideals and federalism, and a custodian of the values of honesty, modesty and hard work.

“As we honour Akande at this remarkable milestone, we pray that God Almighty will continue to grant him good health, peace of mind and strength.

“May his remaining years be filled with joy, and may the ideals he has stood for continue to inspire leaders today and generations yet unborn.

“Baba, at 87, you remain a guiding light. Nigeria salutes you. Osun celebrates you. History records you,” Adewole said.

PUNCH Online reports that Akande rose through the ranks of public service with discipline, integrity and an unwavering commitment to the common good.

He served as governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy. He was also the pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress when the Action Congress of Nigeria, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, the Congress for Progressive Change and other political parties merged to form the APC in February 2013.

CrimeNDLEA Nabs Wanted Drug Kingpin 12 Years After Killing Three Officers by Faith0(op): 2:32pm On Jan 18
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested a long-wanted drug kingpin, Lekan Jimoh, alias Kanmo-Kanmo, 12 years after he allegedly masterminded the killing of three of its officers during a botched arrest operation.

Jimoh was picked up on Friday, January 16, 2026, in Owode, Ogun State, following intelligence-led operations by NDLEA tactical teams. A search of his hideout led to the recovery of 69 kilogrammes of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis. In a statement on Sunday, NDLEA spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi, said Jimoh had been on the agency’s wanted list since June 15, 2014, when he mobilised armed thugs to attack officers attempting to arrest him at his enclave.

According to him, the assault resulted in the brutal killing of three NDLEA personnel, including Rabiu Usman Kazaure, while Jimoh escaped and went underground for over a decade.

Babafemi said: “Following his involvement in the brutal killing of three NDLEA officers, Kanmo-Kanmo, notorious for drug trafficking and mobilising armed thugs against security agents, was on Friday, January 16, tracked to his hideout in Owode, Ogun State, after credible intelligence. During the operation, 69kg of skunk was recovered from him.

“The arrest is a major breakthrough in our resolve to ensure that no fugitive, no matter how long they evade justice, remains beyond the reach of the law.”

He added that Jimoh’s criminal network had earlier been uncovered in August 2023, when operatives raided his residence in Ado-Odo, Ogun State, recovering 139 sacks of skunk weighing 1,922kg. The suspect escaped then, but the property, used as a drug warehouse, was later forfeited to the Federal Government.

Meanwhile, NDLEA also recorded major seizures in several states across the country.

In Edo State, operatives raided Arokpa forest in Uzebba, Owan West Local Government Area, arresting a 53-year-old suspect, Isihor Edika, and seizing 320kg of skunk and cannabis seeds.

In Abuja, a 44-year-old woman, Yinka Agboola, was arrested in Kaura District over alleged online sales of illicit drugs. Items recovered from her home included 2.2kg of skunk and quantities of cannabis oil produced in her kitchen. Another suspect, Tordue Pius Richard, 30, was also arrested with cocaine and skunk in the FCT.In Lagos, NDLEA officers seized 118.1kg of skunk from Dauda Kareem and Saheed Obisesan at Fadeyi, Mushin, while another 116kg was recovered from a warehouse at New Market area of Enugu, Enugu State.

Police unmask 28-year-old man behind violent masquerade in AnambraThe Anambra State Police Command has identified a 28-year-old man, Ifesinachi Ezeolu, as the person operating a violent masquerade accused of terrorising residents in Awgbu community, Orumba South Local Government Area.

The revelation follows public anger over reported incidents of assault, intimidation and harassment connected to the masquerade’s recent appearance in the area.Police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement yesterday that while the Command values cultural and traditional practices, no cultural expression should serve as cover for criminal behaviour or violations of citizens’ rights.

Ikenga emphasised that masquerade performances, like other public events, must be peaceful and comply with legal standards. He warned that actions creating fear, causing harm or disrupting order would face consequences.

“The Command wishes to clearly state that the Nigeria Police Force respects and recognises the cultural and traditional practices of the people,” he said.

“However, no cultural activity or belief system should be used as a cover to harass, assault, intimidate or violate the fundamental human rights of citizens.”

He added: “The Command also emphasises that masquerade activities, like all public gatherings, must be conducted peacefully and within the confines of the law. Therefore, any act capable of causing fear, injury or public disorder will be promptly addressed.”

PoliticsPolice Arrest Man Over Defilement Of 14-year-old Girl In Oyo by Faith0(op): 10:27am On Jan 18
The Oyo State Police Command has said it arrested a 27-year-old man, Usman Azeez, for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl while she went to fetch water from a nearby river in the Iseyin Local Government Area of the state.

The command, in a statement released on Saturday by its spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, in Ibadan, also announced the recovery of a firearm, ammunition and a stolen motorcycle in Ojongbodu, Oyo West Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer explained that preliminary investigation revealed that Azeez allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the 14-year-old girl during the incident.

“On January 15, 2026, a report was received at the Ado-Awaye Police Division regarding an alleged case of defilement involving a minor.

“Upon receipt of the report, police operatives promptly mobilised to the scene and ensured the survivor received immediate medical attention. Medical examination confirmed evidence consistent with penetration.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that one Azeez (male), aged 27, allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old girl while she had gone to fetch water from a nearby river.

“The suspect was arrested and is currently in police custody, having reportedly confessed to the offence. Investigation is ongoing, after which the suspect will be charged to court in accordance with the law.”The statement further said operatives attached to the Ojongbodu Police Division, while also on routine stop-and-search patrol along the Oyo–Ibadan Expressway, intercepted an unregistered motorcycle conveying two suspected hoodlums.

“Upon sighting the patrol team, the suspects abandoned the motorcycle and fled.A search of the area led to the recovery of one locally fabricated revolver pistol, two rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, one Itel mobile phone and the abandoned motorcycle.

“Subsequent investigation revealed that the motorcycle had earlier been stolen at gunpoint, and the rightful owner has been identified.”

The statement said the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, had directed that the case be handled with sustained intelligence-driven investigation to dismantle the criminal network involved.

Ayanlade said efforts were ongoing to identify, trace and arrest all members of the syndicate, after which those involved would be charged to court.

In a suspected murder case reported at the Tede Police Division in Atisbo Local Government Area of the state, the police said preliminary findings revealed that a misunderstanding between Abdulraheem Koni (male), aged 20, and his employer, Lateef Giwa (male), aged 35, escalated into a violent assault, resulting in fatal injuries to the victim.According to the statement, the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.

“Examination of the corpse revealed bruises on the neck and rib areas, as well as a fracture on the left leg.

“The suspect was promptly arrested. In view of the gravity of the offence, the CP has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.

“The suspect will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation,” the statement said.
