On the night of December 18, 1994, 27-year-old Alison Botha was driving home after a night out with friends in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. As she parked outside her apartment, a man forced his way into her car at knifepoint. He gave her a fake name, Clinton, and told her he only needed her car for an hour.

His real name was Frans du Toit. He drove through the neighborhood until he found the man he was looking for, his friend Theuns Kruger, and told Alison, "Theuns doesn't speak good English," before letting him into the car too.

They drove her to a deserted area on the outskirts of the city. Both men raped her. Du Toit strangled her into unconsciousness, apologizing to her as he did it.

They believed she was dead. They stabbed her more than 30 times, mostly in her stomach, and cut her throat, so severely that it nearly decapitated her. Before leaving, Alison's leg twitched. Realizing she might still be alive, they returned and cut her throat again, trying to make sure she would not survive.

Then they left her there.

Alison was still alive. Barely able to move, she used her finger to write the names "Theuns" and "Frans" into the sand beside her, along with the words "I love mum," in case she did not survive long enough to tell anyone herself. She held her own intestines in with one hand and her own head steady with the other as she crawled toward the road.

A passing driver found her and rushed her to the hospital. The surgeons who treated her said they had never seen anyone survive injuries like hers. One of them admitted he could not fully explain why she was still alive at all.

Du Toit was already out on bail for a previous kidnapping and assault when he attacked Alison. When police later told him that she had survived, he was so certain she had died that he confessed immediately.

Both men pleaded guilty and were sentenced to life in prison in 1995. The judge said plainly that he wanted it clear they should never be released, and that he would have considered the death penalty for them if it had still been an option in South Africa.

Alison recovered. She wrote a bestselling book about her survival called I Have Life and became a motivational speaker, eventually becoming the first-ever winner of Femina magazine's Woman of Courage award. In 2003, nine years after the attack, she gave birth to a son.

In July 2023, nearly 30 years after their conviction, both men were controversially released on parole, sparking outrage across South Africa. In February 2025, the country's Minister of Correctional Services formally cancelled that parole, and both men were sent back to prison.

A woman who was raped, stabbed over 30 times, and nearly decapitated wrote her attackers' names in the sand so the truth would survive even if she didn't. In the end, she survived too.

It's more than common. Though how rampant it is depends more on the course you are studying. It's very very high in departments in the social sciences, management sciences, humanity and education than courses that are health related where it is very very expensive even if a lecturer decides to engage thus, making it extremely difficult for most students to afford it.
This menace is affecting our society badly. My major concern is that it sometimes affects the grade of the serious and dedicated students that actually burned the midnight candles to study for exams. For example in most schools if the total number of students in a particular grade level is very high, the school Senate committee may order the department to slash the scores of students in order to reduce the number of students in that grade level thus, bringing down both the innocent and the guilty just because they want to protect the image of the school to the outside world.

The most important thing is to study, know and fully understand the business before you commit huge money into it. There are dues to be paid and you must pay them one way or another, before at a small level, or later when you've committed huge money into it.

One business I can confidently vouch for is layer poultry farming. Though it's capital intensive but the returns na block if you know what you are doing. The main challenge is the first six months after that, you can run the farm from your earnings and later sell the birds and their dung whenever they stop producing.
