ESTABLISHING A GRAIN GROCERY

Grains are agricultural products that have a very high demand in the country. They usually include: Simsim, ground nuts, soy beans, maize, popcorns, and cow peas etc.

The project idea is based on adding value by packaging good quality grains and selling them at relatively low prices. The project expects to package 72,000 kgs of assorted grains per annum. Initial investment costs are estimated at US$20,370 (you can start small) generating revenue of US$92,695 at a net profit margin of 43% and payback period of approximately 2 years.

General Costs (Overheads):
1) Production costs assumed 312 days per year with daily capacity of packing 231kgs of grains.
2) Depreciation (fixed asset write off) assumes 4-years life of assets written off at 25% per year for all assets.
3) Direct costs include: materials, supplies and other costs that directly go into packaging of the grain.
4) Total monthly days assumed are 26-days.
5) The valuation currency used is United States Dollars.

Market Analysis
The market for grains readily exists and their demand continues to grow daily.

Risk
The business risk involved is price fluctuation, which may affect the targeted profits. However, this can be minimized by setting up buffer stocks in times of low prices and resell later when they are high.

Agriculture / Irrigation Systems Types And Their Benefits by Farmsquare(m): 12:43pm On Oct 07, 2020
Generally, water is important for the survival of all living things, but the required quantities may vary. All plants require water for survival as it is an essential element that must be available for their growth and development.

Averagely, the body mass of plants is made up of about 90 percent (90%) of water. On the other hand, the human body consists of about seventy percent (70%) of water.

There are various sources of water that can be used to irrigate farmlands:
- Wells
- Ponds
- Lakes
- Treated wastewater
- Desalinated water
- Canals
- Dams, etc.

Check out the different types of irrigation as well as the methods used for irrigation on our platform.

Agriculture / Poultry Challenges: A Must Read For You by Farmsquare(m): 12:32pm On Sep 23, 2020
If you've been curious why Day old chicks are sold at higher rates. Here are some explanations on how this work.

Some few weeks ago, we could all observe the problems facing Nigeria poultry sector. The hike in feed price, poor egg production and the crazy DOC price are enough reasons to be depressed in the last two weeks. The birds we all reared are the offspring that are produced from a parent stock farm. These farms are also referred to as breeders. In breeders, we have the grand parents stock and parent stock.

Now, the sole responsibility of any serious government is to invest in research and development of parent stock that are genetically improved for our tropical climate. Unfortunately, most of the grand parent stocks and the parent stocks are franchised, imported from Europe and US. This breeder farming is not a rocket science. Just that we as farmers doesn't want to take risks. And without risk, no breakthrough. The government also need to help with an indigenous breeding program and research into the development of local breed.

As the population grows, the demand for poultry products and associated inputs will also continue to grow. When we have more farms churning out day old chicks on a daily basis, we will all be fine. The competition will be fair. A breeder farm is highly capital intensive and requires strict management regime. Having investors come in at this time will be great. Commercial hatchery can be set up. This is also capital intensive but also a money spinner. Eggs laid by the breeders need to be hatched and this is where its done in thousands.

If we try to boycott DOC and not buy, buyers are waiting in Cameroon, Niger and Chad. These big players are not worried about us. What we need is self help by having our own breeder flock.

Agriculture / What NPK Fertilizer Means And It's Components by Farmsquare(m): 10:57pm On Jul 08, 2019
NPK Fertilizer is one of the several nutrients that are needed by plants for their development and optimum growth. Plants won't generally grow to their full potential without these nutrients and plants will be more susceptible to disease and perform below their expected yield.

NPK simply mean Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) also known as NKP fertilizer.

There are so many NPK fertilizer composition and combinations, e.g., NPK 10-10-10, NPK 20-20-20, NPK 10-8-10 and others.

People usually ask;

NPK fertilizer, what is it, and how does it work?
What does the NPK fertilizer ratio mean?
When to use NPK?
What's NPK fertilizer benefits?

The numbers on the fertilizer represent the value these nutrients contained in a certain quantity (e.g., a tin, a bag). The figures indicate the concentration of the nutrients in the fertilizer. Take, for instance, numbers on NPK fertilizer 20-10-10 have two times more nitrogen in it than phosphorus and potassium. A 20-20-20 fertilizer has an equal concentration of NPK.

These nutrients are quickly removed in the soil as a result of continuous farming and other environmental factors. In the tropics, soils are usually lacking with these three nutrients. Action must be taken to put back nutrients into the ground to create a quality environment for the healthy growth of plants.

Let's quickly look at the roles of these three nutrients in the life of plants

Agriculture / How To Know A Sick Chicken | Number 4 Will Shock You by Farmsquare(m): 3:03pm On May 14, 2019
When your chickens show a puffed up feathers, hiding, crouching and not eating, or otherwise not acting like itself, it could be sick.

First, look for parasites such as mites and lice. Chickens can go down fast if they have an infestation and that can happen really quickly. You can bathe them in a couple of inches of warm water to try to get the mites, lice and eggs off of them but be sure to dry them well and don't immerse them in water.

The most common things that we see are: you can Google them

1. Mycoplasmas or chicken colds
2. upper respiratory infections
3. Parasites: worms/lice/mites
4. Mareks DiseaseCanker (this goes under parasites and you need to look it up)
5. Bumblefoot: a staph infection of the foot.

knowing your chickens and caring about their environment is very important to their health. Look at them every day and pick some up to check for parasites. Look for any bird that is huddled, not eating, poop not being right, and acting off. Act quickly by separating any bird that you think may be sick to protect that bird and the rest of your flock. One thing about chicken upper respiratory infections, the trachea of the chicken is a hole behind the tongue that opens and closes.

Sometimes when chicken has a cold some white extrudate can be deposited around that hole, sometimes even closing it. Look at it and if there is white gunk around it, use a Q-tip to remove it. It may bleed a little when you remove it, but it's worth it to be sure your chicken can breathe. Also, checking their poop for worms. If you see worms in chicken poop, you want to worm your whole flock. There are other worms that chickens get but roundworms are the most common.Check their nostrils, their eyes for discharge and listen for raspy breathing.

If you see a swollen eye or discharge, it's best to medicate. If you are organic and unable to medicate, separate the bird (but it’s probably too late and your flock has been exposed) and try to nurse it back to health with natural remedies or cull it.There is a very common neurological disease called Mareks, which is a herpes-type virus that causes paralysis. It is 100% fatal and is passed in feather dust. All chickens that are not raised with 100% biosecurity have been exposed to it....more at farmsquare dot ng

Agriculture / How To Maximise Customers Digital Habit As A Tool To Digital Commerce by Farmsquare(m): 10:28pm On May 06, 2019
While there has always been a natural uptick in how often people shop online, consumers’  digital habits have started to stabilize. Almost 26 percent of online consumers currently shop online at least weekly, according to a survey of more than 4,500 global online shoppers. The plateau effect in digital commerce leaves companies with a clear mandate to improve or get left behind.

The average shopper’s path to purchase is more complex than ever, filled with a wide variety of capabilities and attractions popularized by digital-native brands.  Vying for consumers’ attention and wallet share will only grow more difficult as additional players enter the fray, further congesting an already crowded digital shopping ecosystem. To get ahead, these are the key findings

1. Final purchases require guidance
Just one-in-five online consumers, 20 percent say all of their online purchases are pre-planned.

2. Ineffective content has major consequences
Incorrect or incomplete content on a brand’s website and/or mobile app has stopped 98  percent of online shoppers from completing a purchase.

3. Digital commerce overwhelms consumers
Half of the online shoppers (46 percent) have failed to complete a purchase online because there were too many options to choose from. One-in-10 online shoppers view an item five or more times before making an online purchase, adding to feelings of always-on commerce.

4. Social media drives engagement and purchases
Fifty-two percent of online shoppers who use social media have clicked on an influencer ’s post, and a third of those shoppers (31 percent) have made a direct purchase from the post.

Agriculture / How Can Farmers Reach Their Consumers? by Farmsquare(m): 9:23pm On Mar 17, 2019
Farmers are always involved in farm work thus, they don’t want to go and deliver farm products to consumers. They do not want to involve in logistics to reach larger consumers as he/she cannot make a cost-efficient supply chain system. The third party systems made their sourcing, logistics and wholesale chain efficiently by maximising their profit in the supply chain with experience.

Farmers do not want to involve in finding consumers for his/her produce ( sales / traditional marketing / social media marketing). Farmer supply is seasonal based and limited variety while consumers needs are a lot more different item. He/she does not want to waste his time for procuring different items from different sources.

Consumers don’t want to go long distances no matter how quality the product is, they want everything in their neighbourhood or delivered to their home.
At Farm Square Nigeria, We are connecting organic farmers and agro-dealers to local and international consumers to reduce logistics overhead.

In case farmers and agro-dealers cannot reach consumers and vice versa, farmsquareNg sources farm products, agriculture equipment from their nearest natural farmers and sells them online/offline to surrounding customers.

Agriculture / Modified Starch Market: Why High-quality Cassava Starch? by Farmsquare(m): 9:16pm On Mar 17, 2019
High-Quality Cassava Starch (HQCS) plays a pivotal role as raw materials for food, paper, textiles, adhesives, beverages, confectioneries and especially what FIDSON is involved in “pharmaceuticals”.

This has given rise to a consistent demand for HQCS, which has been in limited supply in Nigeria due to its high cost and low production. Pharmaceutical companies are not exempt from this short supply.
