How i wish a catholic here could say somthing more reasonable on purgatory. Cos since today i havent seen anything convincing.. Actually I can buttress my point but its not something I can just write here..But I can tell you one thing, You wanna know why I can support the catholic doctrine anytime anyday?.. Well read Matthew 16 verse 14 to 22, I believe what Jesus Christ told Saint Peter, And if you believe Jesus Christ you won't doubt whatever the Catholic church teaches you, N.B#If Jesus christ told saint peter that and saint peter started the catholic church.. A study by the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings has shown that no Nigerian university made the top 400 in the world.
The report, ‘World University Rankings 2013-2014,’ which was released on Wednesday, also showed that no African university was on the list of 100 most reputable in the world.
The top 10 universities in the world, according to the report, are the California Institute of Technology, with 94.9 aggregate score. It was followed by Harvard University (USA), 93.9; University of Oxford (UK), 93.9; Stanford University (USA), 93.8.
Others are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), 93.0; Princeton University (USA), 92.7; University of Cambridge (UK), 92.3; University of California, Berkeley (USA), 89.8; University of Chicago (USA), 87.8; and the Imperial College, London (UK), 87.5.
In Africa, only three South African institutions made the list. They are the University of Cape Town, ranking 126th and scoring 50.5; University of Witwatersrand, between 226th and 250th; and the Stellenbosch University, between 301st and 350th.
The UK varsities top the list in Europe, with Oxford University as the leader, followed by the University of Cambridge and Imperial College, London. ETH Zürich-Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich (Switzerland) is fourth in Europe and 14th in the world. The University College, London (UK) is fifth and 21st in the world.
The University of Tokyo (Japan), 23rd in the world, is leading in Asia. The National University of Singapore, 26th in the world, is second in the continent. Others are the University of Hong Kong, 43rd in the world; Seoul National University (Republic of Korea), 44th in the world; and the Peking University (China), 45th.
In North America, the USA had the top 19 universities. The University of Toronto (Canada) came 20th, at 78.3.
The University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) leads in South America and ranks between 226th and 250th. The University of the Andes came second between 251st and 275th; State University of Campinas (Brazil) is third between 301st and 350th.
Australia has the first five universities in the Oceania. They are the University of Melbourne (34th), Australian National University (48th), University of Queensland (63rd), University of Sydney (72nd) and the Monash University (91st).
The Times said the rankings “are the only global university performance tables to judge world-class universities across all of their core missions — teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.”
It added that, “The top universities rankings employ 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available, which are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.”
By reputation, however, the organization said Harvard University had 100 per cent. It was followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (87.6 per cent), University of Cambridge (81.3), University of Oxford (73.0) and the University of California, Berkeley (72.4).
The report said the ‘World Reputation Rankings’ employed the world’s largest invitation-only academic opinion survey to provide the definitive list of the top 100 most powerful global university brands.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities on Monday began indefinite strike.
This followed by a unanimous resolution adopted by members of the University of Ibadan chapter of the association at a congress held at the university Arts Theatre in Ibadan.
The Chairman of the association, University of Ibadan chapter, Dr Wale Akinremi, said that the strike was total.
”This is as a result of the directive from our National Executive Council; so, the strike is a national strike.”
He said that the association should have gone on strike for a very long time ”because of the government’s provoking way of attending to issues”.
” We have been short-changed by the government in the area of subventions and we cannot take it again ,” Akinremi said.
According to him, the education sector is the bedrock of the nation’s development and should be treated with care.
He said that there were other important issues beside the subventions that needed to be addressed.
Akinremi listed the issues as training, funding and disparities in terms of payment.
He said: ”Non-teaching members of staff are wrongly placed in the education system, and these issues must be holistically addressed.”
According to Akinremi, SSANU will continue with the strike until it is call off by the national body.

Senate said it would initiate “legislative solutions” that would regulate incessant industrial actions in universities and other tertiary institutions in the country.
President of the Senate, David Mark, disclosed this in Abuja at the first conference of the National and state Assembly Committees on Education organized by the Senate Committee on Education.
The Senate’s position is coming in the middle of a prolonged strike called by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) to press the demand for implementation of an agreement between the Federal Government and the university lecturers since 2009.
Mark, who was represented by Senate Minority Leader, Ganiyu Solomon, at the occasion also said it was important that particular attention is paid to the country’s education sector, which, according to him, is in serious need of transformation.
He stressed that persistence of industrial actions by ASUU has had huge impact on the country’s education system, adding that it has called for the Senate to initiate legislative solutions to the problem.
He stressed that issues of educational development have been a priority on the government’s programme.
He noted that the present situation in the education sector called for comprehensive and sustainable policies that will deliver good standards, decent environment and cost effectiveness.
Mark, however, called on the Federal Government and leadership of ASUU to gently come to an agreement to call off the current 84-day old strike.
Meanwhile, Benue State Government has said it may consider forcefully reopening its own university – Benue State University (BSU) shut down by the ASUU strike.
This hint is coming after two meetings between the government and BSU chapter of ASUU had ended in deadlock.
The state government has also scheduled a meeting with the Governing Council of BSU later this week that would lead to the reopening of the institution.
State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, dropped the hint at the Government House, Makurdi, on Tuesday when he summoned the management staff of the state-owned university to his office.
The Governor, who noted that he was becoming “impatient” with the snail pace at the reluctance of the BSU ASUU to take a decision to resume classes, said he would be compelled to reopen the institution if nothing was done fast.
He vowed to terminate the appointment of any lecturer who fails to return to class when the institution reopens, adding that the state government was also enforcing the no work, no pay rule with immediate effect.
Suswam also threatened to “dust up” an earlier judgment of a Makurdi High Court that granted judgment in favour of the state government over an earlier strike embarked upon by BSU dons.
Suswam, who said he has run out of patience with the university which has nothing against the state government, added that he would not continue to tolerate the actions of the lecturers, which has an adverse effect on the students.
He argued that the area of concern of the state-owned university has been taken care of by the Federal Government, adding that prior to the strike the Federal Government has assisted the BSU with about N3 billion to embark on various project.
But the ASUU’s strike may soon end, as the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie, said the Federal Government was making progress in its negotiation with the university teachers.
Okojie, who disclosed this in Abuja at press luncheon, expressed optimism that the locked gates of universities would soon be opened, noting that progress was being made in the negotiation with the union.
It would be recalled that the Presidency took over the negotiations with the striking dons when it mandated Vice President Namadi Sambo to meet with their union.
Okojie, however, reacted to calls by the union for his sack and scrap of the NUC, saying, “It is only President Goodluck Jonathan that can sack me.”
Okojie debunked the impression that the university system is dying, saying the system has actually improved under his leadership
