The prospects of majority of Nigerians buying brand new vehicles in the near future may not be guranteed as the total number of new vehicle sold in Nigeria may not exceed 10,000 units by the end of this year further painting a flood picture of a chequered local auto industry that is not growing at the expected pace. The number of brand new vehicles according to figures show’s the total numbet of brand new vehicles dropping from 50,000 units, which was recorded before the introduction of a new automotive policy in 2013. This disclosure which was one of the high points local automakers and dealers stated this in Lagos on Tuesday and gave low purchasing power due to economic crunch, scarcity of foreign exchange and high interest rate as some of the factors responsible for the drastic drop. They spoke at the 2017 symposium of the automobile and allied services group of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry held under the theme, ‘The Nigeria auto policy: The current drivers’. Executive Director, Truckmasters Nigeria Limited, . Oseme Oigiagbe, said rather than encourage production and purchase of new vehicle sales, the enforcement of the auto policy had largely led to significant reduction in the sales figures. He said the figures had consistently dropped from 50,000 units in 2013 to 40,000 vehicles in 2015; 20,000 in 2016 and 10,000 this year. Oigiagbe, who said the Federal Government ought to have placed a total ban on the importation of used vehicles to drive the new vehicles’ patronage, lamented the high interest rate on vehicle loans, ranging from 25 per cent to 27 per cent. On his 9.art, Executive Director, Kewalram Chanrai Group, Anil Sahgal, also put the total figures of new vehicles sold this year at 10,000 units, stressing that without the support of the government for the automobile assemblers, the industry would not make any headway. The Executive Director, Nigerian Automotive Manufacturers Association, Remi Olaofe, said many of the auto assemblers were merely producing vehicles and dumping them in the warehouses as a result of low patronage. Managing Director, VON Automobile Limited¥Adetokunbo Aromolaran, who described the situation as pitiable, said there was no way the nation could make progress if the government continued to buy imported fully built vehicles. He said, “The government remains the biggest buyer, and it has to lead by example by buying made-in-Nigeria vehicles. The auto business is a demand-driven; once volume grows, the cost of production will drop and vehicles’ prices will come down. There is also the need to create viable vehicle finance scheme.” The Managing Director, National Trucks Manufacturers LimitedIbrahim, Bayero, said, “Majority of us have been recording losses in the last five years due to poor sales.” He criticised the granting of licences by the government to 53 auto firms to assemble vehicles in Nigeria, saying, “It does not make economic sense’ and warned that without sincerity, the auto policy would not achieve its desired goals.” While the Deputy President, LCCI,. Babatunde Ruwase, urged major players in the industry to be more proactive if they hoped to make appreciable impact in the implementation of the auto policy. http://www.businessdayonline.com/nigerias-new-vehicle-sales-drops-abysmal-10000-units/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

John Charles, Makurdi Two former aides to Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; and one-time governorship aspirant under the ruling All Progressives Congress, led about 2,000 members of APC to defect to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in Benue South senatorial district on Monday. The former aides are: Senior Special Assistant on Youth Mobilisation, Anthony Ada, a.k.a ‘Tony Trigger;” former special assistant to governor on legal matters and ex-caretaker chairman of Okpokwu local government under APC, Chris Idu; and Hellen Ode, a gubernatorial aspirant in the 2015 elections. The ceremony, which held at Okpoga, headquarters of Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, witnessed hundreds of members who had decamped to the APC from PDP at the inception of this administration, return to PDP again. Presenting them to the party, former Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, said the returnees had discovered that they were deceived into joining the ruling party. “I said it during the re-run election in this senatorial district when many people I always refer to as ‘Food is ready politician’ left the PDP to join the ruling party. “But today, they have discovered that the party in power is deceitful, all eyes have seen it with the manner the people of the state have been impoverished and they have decided to leave the comfort zone to come back to suffering zone so that tomorrow will be better,” Moro said. Receiving the defectors, state chairman of PDP, John Ngbede, said, “It is good these people realised their mistakes and retraced their steps back to PDP.” Ngbede noted that the returnees had become members of PDP family and promised that the party would not discriminate against them. In a swift reaction to the development, the state chairman of APC, Abba Yaro, described the defectors as “a bunch of irrelevant people who cannot effect the success of APC in 2019.” “They are a bunch of irrelevant people, some of them were chairmen of local government councils, they were all in PDP, so let them go back,” Yaro declared. http://punchng.com/ortoms-ex-aides-former-apc-governorship-aspirant-2000-others-join-pdp/ |

Some officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have accused the Chairman, Colonel Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah (retd.) of aiding the activities of drug barons and criminals. According to Sahara Reporters, Colonel Abdallah has also been accused of pilfering the sum of N528 million, the equivalent of 85 percent of the agency’s monthly allocation for two years, on inappropriate foreign travels. The allegations were contained in a petition signed by one Musa Ahmed Yusuf on behalf a group that calls itself Concerned Officers. According to the petition, the NDLEA Chairman spends an average of N11 million monthly on foreign trips. This, said the staff, has ensured that the welfare of low and medium level as well as top management staff is neglected. The petition, dated November 6 and, exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters, was copied to the Senate Committee on Drugs and Financial Crimes, House Committee on Drugs & Financial Crimes, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, National Security Adviser, Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Femi Falana Chambers. The petitioners mentioned the case of Senator Buruji Kashamu (Ogun East), as one of the high profile cases swept under the carpet by Abdallah due to personal interest. They added that many high profile drug cases have also been covered up by the Colonel Abdallah-led management. Because of his willingness to do deals with drug offenders, alleged the petitioners, drug barons in the United States of America have become more emboldened, leading to an increase in their activities. On account of this, stated the petitioners, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Corruption (UNODC), now has an estranged relationship with the country. The petitioners pointed out that the UNODC and other allies of the country were absent from the ceremony commemorating the 2017 World Drug Day in Abuja. Since Colonel Abdallah took over two years ago, the staff further alleged, there has been a sharp dip in the frequency of arrests and drug seizures, a development that is making NDLEA facilities across the country brim with drug-dependent persons seeking rehabilitation. “In the history of the NDLEA, drug barons have not had a better time than now. In fact, they are having a field day, producing and selling drugs to the detriment of the country. Abdallah has not taken steps to checkmate the activities of drug barons,” Concerned Staff stated in the petition. The petition further quoted a July 24, 2017, circular (Ref NDLEA/ADM/400/2/V/124), titled “Re: ‘Voluntary Donation for the Families of Our Officers who Died in Active Service”, as an indication of Colonel Abdallah’s loss of vision. Three NDLEA officers (Onwumere Nicholas, Peter Ebun, and Abdulrahman Musa), said the petitioners, were killed by gunmen in Kogi on October 13. The gunmen made away with their rifles. According to the petitioners, the NDLEA gave the families of the deceased officers a total sum of N50,000, amounting to N16,600 for each family. “There is no succor for both the living and the dead. This situation has heightened the frustration of officers concerning the criminal neglect by a callous management. The deplorable and extreme hardship is unbearable,” the petition added. The disaffected staff called for immediate suspension of Colonel Abdallah as well as the appointment of a more competent person with integrity, preferably a retired Major-General or an Inspector-General of Police, to correct the administrative abnormalities in the agency. They equally demanded an exercise of immediate harmonisation and proper placement of officers. Also being demanded is the provision of life insurance policy for staff and prosecution of Colonel Abdallah for the grief experienced by families of deceased officers. Other demands include better remuneration, decent offices provision of drug control technological tools, and increased funding/provision of logistic support for the agency such as operational vehicles, scanning machines, sniffer dogs, rehabilitation centres and public enlightenment programs. https://ynaija.com/drug-barons-have-not-had-a-better-time-than-now-ndlea-staff-make-allegations-against-the-chairman/?utm_source=NNDTW&utm_medium=twitter |

A soldier who refused to disclose his identity has written a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari to complain about the alleged corruption in the army. The officer on the frontline of the war against insurgency wrote the letter in reaction to the army’s dismissal of the complaints of Abdulrauf Aliyu, a private of the Nigerian army. Aliyu had complained that he was abandoned after being shot by suspected Boko Haram insurgents. But Sani Usman, spokesman of the army, denied the allegation, saying Aliyu was declared a deserter for leaving the hospital he was receiving treatment without being cleared by the authorities. Usman said as a deserter, Aliyu should be apprehended and handed over to the nearest military unit or police station, if seen. “This is a clear case of a deserter from the Nigerian army trying to run a campaign of calumny against the Nigerian army on Social Media,” Usman had said. But the soldier who wrote the letter spoke in defence of Aliyu and also drew attention to the plight of his colleagues. A picture of the rice served to soldiers. Not a single meat in it He said knowing what they signed for, soldiers “expect to die in the hands of the enemy, not in the hands of the Nigerian Army”. The letter in full: Having read the online correspondence between Dr. Idris Ahmed of CUPS and our Army spokesman, Brigadier General S.K. Usman, I have decided to take a major risk and write to your Excellency directly over this issue. Sir, I am a course-mate of Pvt. Abdulrauf Aliyu, who Oga S.K. claimed that he has gone AWOL. We trained at the same company, Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, Kaduna State. We are presently posted to Operation LAFIYA DOLE. On behalf of all the colleagues of Pvt. Abdulrauf Aliyu, I categorically refute the allegation that Pvt. Abdulrauf Aliyu deserted the Army. The Sections 59 – 63 of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, as quoted by Oga S.K., has always been mentioned by our superiors, to protect themselves and antagonise us, whenever they have done mischief. Your Excellency, the case of Pvt. Abdulrauf Aliyu is actually not an isolated one. There are many such cases of soldiers who got wounded on the battlefront. It is true, some are well looked after, as mentioned by Oga S.K. Usman in his press release. Unfortunately, due to corruption in the system, some unfortunate soldiers, mostly from less privileged backgrounds, are left to fend for themselves. Like myself, Pvt. Abdulrauf Aliyu comes from a humble family. He sustained life-threatening injuries in the abdomen during a routine operation. The initial first aid treatment and medical care that he received was very inadequate. With full Army permission, Pvt Abdulrauf Aliyu and his family paid for his transfer to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, the care he received in Maiduguri Teaching Hospital too was inadequate. Eventually, his family had to pay for his transfer to a specialist facility in Sokoto. Your Excellency, corruption in the Army is REAL, and it is killing us. Every man and woman who decided to join the Army knows the risks. While we expect to die in the hands of the enemy, we don’t expect to die in the hands of the Nigerian Army, due to corruption and criminal negligence. Just the other week, about 14 (I am not sure of the exact numbers) of our colleagues died in the hands of Boko Haram, who attacked the Army camp. The circumstances surrounding their unnecessary death warrants a full investigation by his Excellency. Sir, you will be shocked of the outcome. The bodies of the slain heroes are still lying here in Damaturu, Yobe State. The story of this incidence has hardly been officially published by the Army or Nigerian media. Attached is the picture of the commander of the camp. He too died in the attack. Your Excellency, this is the third month in a row that we have been denied of our operations allowance. We have to rely ONLY on our meagre salary for everything. From battalion commanders, to Company and Sectors leaders, we are all in debt, because our salaries are not enough to sustain us at the battlefront while feeding our families back at home. It is a big shame that we have joined the Army to defend the civilians, yet we have to go to the civilians in town to borrow money to fend for ourselves at the battlefront. Take for instance the food that we are fed. Most of the times it is not fit for human consumption. I attach for your perusal, your Excellency, the lunch that was fed to us this afternoon (3/11/2017). As you can clearly see, there is not a single piece of meat or fish in it. The taste of the food is so bad that we have to add surplus salt to be able to eat it. This is also dangerous for our health. A plate of our food per soldier is probably about two hundred Naira (N200). It is said that the Federal Government spends about fourteen thousand Naira (N14,000) on each prisoner in Nigeria. Here, at the battlefront in Operation LAFIYA DOLE, the Army spends about six hundred Naira (N600) per day per soldier on feeding us, while in reality billions of Naira is appropriated per year for this purpose. Your Excellency, we are treated like animals. Most of us are afraid to talk because of the dire consequence. As the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, your Excellency, kindly investigate. There is corruption in the Army. Brave soldiers are needlessly dying. https://www.thecable.ng/.Wf8WlUakCrE.twitter |

Two persons were reported killed Tuesday night during an attack in Jol, a village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The chairman of the transition committee of the local government, Emmanuel Jugul, disclosed this to PREMIUM TIMES in an interview on Wednesday. He said two other people were injured in the attack and are in hospital. “Four people were yesterday (Tuesday) night attacked in Jol, two died, the other two persons were badly injured,” he said in Jos. According to Mr. Jugul, the attack came a day after the corpse of a herdsman earlier declared missing was discovered in the area. “It is unfortunate that we are recording incidents of attacks again in Riyom Local Government. Two days ago, the corpse of a Fulani boy that had been missing since last week was found by a search party we organized.” He said the incident of the missing Fulani man was reported to the Special Taskforce on Jos crisis. The Riyom transition committee chairman had made several appeal for peace to residents of the area. About 44 persons were reported killed in communal clashes in two local government areas of the state within the last month. President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the Plateau attacks and mandated security agencies to forestall such incidents. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/247225-two-killed-fresh-attack-plateau-community.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Family members of Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, say their son is not a fraudster but a messiah who brought reforms into the pension scheme. At a news conference in Kaduna on Wednesday, Aliyu Maina, spokesman of the family, accused a “cabal” of being behind the travails of the dismissed civil servant. He said based on his “sterling record” at the scheme, the government of President Muhammadu Buhari appealed to Maina to key into the “change agenda”. Aliyu wondered why government officials were denying his brother. He said it was the Department of State Services (DSS) that gave him protection for him. “It is on record that Abdulrasheed Maina’s reform put to a stop the fraudulent withdrawal of huge sums from both the Nigerian Pension Board, the Nigerian Police Pension Board, etc. Perhaps it is his noble efforts that made him enviable to the present administration when they came into power to convince him to come back and assist in its ‘CHANGE’ agenda,” he said. “Abdulrasheed was in fact invited by this administration and he was promised security to come and clean up the mess and generate more revenue to government by blocking leakages. “He succumbed to the present administration and came back to Nigeria. He has been working with the DSS for quite some time and he was given necessary security. “There is a letter from the attorney-general of the federation where he gave his own legal opinion regarding the court verdict which was submitted to the Civil Service Commission and the head of service respectively. So, one wonders why all the agencies and various individuals responsible for his return are now denying.” Asked to comment on Maina’s whereabouts, Aliyu said: “As you know Abdulrasheed Maina had been a target of in the past, so experience is the best teacher. But when his security is guaranteed, he will surface from wherever he is and tell Nigerians the truth.” Aliyu, who said the family had sought the intervention of its lawyers, added that Maina would soon make some damning revelations. “All the same, we have contacted our solicitors, Messrs Mamman Nasir & Co and instructed them to act appropriately. We equally know that Abdulrasheed Maina is in possession of so facts that are against the cabal and interesting to the Nigerian populace, which he will disclose soonest. One must ask whether it is an offence for somebody to serve his fatherland,” he said The family said Maina inherited the houses which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently seized in Kaduna. He said the anti-graft agency had ordered the family members to vacate their residential house in Kaduna. https://www.thecable.ng/mainas-family-buharis-govt-reinstated-son-messiah |

At least three local government areas in Nigeria are still cut off due to the presence of Boko Haram insurgents, the United Nations has said. The claim is coming weeks after the military command in northeast Nigeria announced that no part of Borno state was under the control of the deadly group. But the UN said despite efforts by the military, some locations in Borno state, including three whole local government areas, remained inaccessible to aid workers as a result of the threat posed by the Boko Haram sect. The report was issued by the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian (OCHA). It said Boko Haram hostilities that slowed down due to the rainy season might increase in the coming months. “Insecurity, presence of mines, improvised explosive devices, and unexploded ordinances had continued to slow down the response of humanitarian agencies in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states” said OCHA’s monthly report for September 2017, titled, “North-East Nigeria: Humanitarian Situation Update”. “Most roads to the south, south-west and east remain unusable due to security concerns and most humanitarian personnel movement is done through air assets. Cargo, however, is being transported via road with armed escorts as a last resort.” The UN agency added that, “No humanitarian aid is currently reaching locations in these LGAs outside of the LGAs’ main towns called ‘headquarters’. Major humanitarian supply routes towards the west, north-west and north are open for humanitarians without the use of armed escorts. Following advocacy efforts, Konduga and Mafa are now also accessible to aid groups without military escorts.” The UN said it was battling with paucity of funds due to the failure of donors worldwide to fully meet their financial commitment towards the North-east. The director of Army Public Relations, Sani Usman, told journalists the Army would not Immediately comment on the report until it studied its details. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/246976-un-counters-nigerian-govt-says-three-borno-lgas-cut-off-boko-haram.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
