@Fdeveloper Enjoy! man. We are all one. Its a matter of preference but I advice u be a team player.
Yep, I can't argue with that! |
@Smart K, I take your point and I have had this same discussion with many programmers. The reason why I use "m_" for public variables is to indicate that the variable in question is a member of the class and it's easily distinguishable from a method variable of the same name. My intention was not to indicate whether the variable is module level or not. Quite a number of my programmer colleagues have disagreed with me and suggested that I follow what you have proposed as they believe it's less confusing but once again I guess we get back to the question of syntax preferences. I should say that I got the habit of using "m_" prefix from java where I learnt the hard way of the dangers of confusing a method variable with a module level variable of the same name and my use of the "m_" prefixes has prevented me from making that same mistake again. I know that the IDE in Visual Studio provides clues that help in this respect but for me I guess some old habits die hard! |
I think it's a valid concern and what happens in some other countries is that you take the documents in question to a registered official agent who will inspect them to certify that they are authentic and they are then immediately returned to you so there is no chance of them being misplaced. I have lost documents with DHL and whilst they were very apologetic and offered me financial compensation that of course didn't help me replace the documents in question the loss of which caused me a considerable amount of inconvenience. The fact of the matter is that even with the best will in the world, your documents can be misplaced and getting them replaced especially in Nigeria is no easy task. |
I'm sure they put that in the headline to ensure it catches everyone's attention! |
It seems the person is a Nigerian https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-71386.0.html |

I'm not a DBA however if we assume that the prime objective of the DBA is to ensure the database is running at optimum performance at all times, then surely the critical factor is the speed with which you execute tasks and/or foresee problems and solve them to that extent whether you use a GUI to achieve that or not is purely academic. Your employer will be happy if the database has high availability and doesn't really care whether or not you know all the system commands from memory as in the unlikely event that you don't know a command and the GUI you are using cannot help, there are a vast umber of resources on the internet where you can look it up. Imagine for example that you have a large database and you want to monitor it's performance (i.e. Number of connections, CPU usage, Cache hits etc.), surely this type of data is easier to view as a series of graphs and/or bar charts in a GUI rather than rows and columns of figures in the CLI. I would argue that using a GUI in this instance will make you more efficient and less likely to make errors and in no way constitutes a softer option as it’s still your responsibility to set performance parameters correctly. To give another example, surely it's easier to write/read Oracle PL/SQL in a GUI with colour coded syntax highlighting not to mention the ease of debugging where you can insert breaks, view the value of variables etc. I would imagine that in most cases, stored procedures, triggers, views etc. can be developed much quicker and are less error prone using a GUI then the CLI because for example you don't have to remember the exact spelling of every table and column as you can just pick what you need from a list. Having said that, there may well be circumstances where it's quicker and easier to use the CLI and there is of course no harm in knowing how to use it effectively however this does not in my view automatically give you more control over the database than a DBA who is more reliant on GUIs. |
Afam:I would also like to hear the answer cmdimkpa:2 Questions: - What is a utility developer? - What is LB? |
@Nigeria1, Ahhh, right on cue, you have now resorted to personal abuse which is often the last refuge of individuals such as yourself who have a conspicuous inability to express themselves with logical arguments. nigeria1: My computer programing skill are wonderful, I can write computer program in more than 10 computer languagues, and I am also train to design software. so i think my skill would be of help. I can make computer do anything I want, even speak to you in Nigeria languagues, I really mean to you. like normal human been, more like artificial intelligent. The above is one of your posts in the "General Discussion - Politics" forum which can be found at https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-35352.224.html I guess I should have known better than to get into a debate with a highly skilled person such as yourself because given your exceptional ability, there was no way I was ever going to win the debate. Anyway, many thanks for your "illuminating contribution" which I regret to say on this occasion has not done much to advance this thread. |
I have just noticed that luckyCO has posted a solution for you at https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-60292.0.html so I have deleted my previous response posted here. Please try and avoid posting the same question in multiple threads as it inevitably leads to unnecessary duplication. |
@nigeria1, trini_girl has said it all and I certainly don't feel the need to enter into a pointless question and answer session with you as I am confident in my knowledge and you are yet to prove to me and most other contributors to this thread that you even understand the basics of programming. It may have escaped your notice but I would take this opportunity to remind you that I started this thread to exchange ideas with seasoned developers and not enter into a competition with individuals such as yourself. I would also suggest that you take a look at some of my past posts on this forum following which a reasonable person (not sure if this would include your good self?) can get an indication of my level of competence. author=nigeria1 link=topic=55056.msg1232505#msg1232505 date=1182680871]NigeriaONE.comI would be eternally grateful if you would enlighten me as to precisely how a "real programmer" would define inheritance which incidentally I notice you still fail to spell correctly? You know what, I admit that you are a far better programmer than I am having had the benefit of Prof. Ibiyemi's instruction and since I don't have a degree in computer science, I am wrong to call myself a programmer. There. Happy now? |
In fact I would go one step further and insist on payment via PayPal or a recognised credit card only. |
Whilst there are several vendors who claim to offer training, I doubt there is a universally recognised official certification for ethical hacking. Check out: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ethical+hacking |
It could be that you are not using one of the correct type identifiers in your Cast() function. From what I can see in the documentation, "int" is not one of the defined types I got this from the MySQL Developer site http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/cast-functions.html: CAST(expr AS type), CONVERT(expr, type), CONVERT(expr USING transcoding_name)I guess you should also ensure that the contents of the column can be safely converted in that it doesn't contain any non numeric characters such as currency indicators, semi colons etc. and also ensure that the column in question is not null. What is the output if you just do a straightforward select without a Cast() or Convert()? |
binkabir:If you're using VB6, then you don't need to use a Windows API as there is a native custom control which enables interaction with the serical port (MSCOMM.OCX). The following link demonstrates it's use in a short application: http://www.programmers-corner.com/sourcecode/111 |
I assume you're using MS-SQL in which case you could try rounding the column first before the cast as maybe the column is stored in a decimal format select cast(round(amount_paid, 0) as int) as "AmountPaid" from contractpayment Alternatively, if your intention was to Cast as double then you should use the Double qualifier in the Cast() function [i.e. Cast(<Column Name> as Double)] I don't know if it's relevant but Oracle has a built function for converting varchar2 to a number as follows: to_number('1210.73', '9999.99') would return the number 1210.73 to_number('546', '999') would return the number 546 to_number('23', '99') would return the number 23 So your example would be written as follows: select to_number(amount_paid '9,999,999') as "AmountPaid" from contractpayment |
nigeria1:Well sadly all your time with Prof. Ibiyemi and your training abroad clearly didn't do much to improve your command of the English language. Of course, English is not my first language either but having said that in addition to your bad grammar, I think you'll find the correct spelling of the term you alluded to is "Inheritance". Inheritance is a feature of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) whereby a class can acquire (i.e. inherit) the objects, state and behaviour of another class. By the way for your information, I'm a self taught freelance programmer who has worked with many blue chip companies in Europe, US and Nigeria and I have a degree in Business Administration (i.e. NOT computer Science) from a Nigerian university. I should make it clear that I'm certainly not arrogant enough to claim that Prof. Ibiyemi cannot teach me anything as I'm absolutely sure I can learn something from him, however my point is that I didn't have to go to university to learn programming. nigeria1:I don't believe anybody has ever claimed that you can become a doctor simply by using information available on the internet and in anycase that is not a good analogy. I can practise development on my machine without putting anybody's life at risk however I need live patients to practise medicine which is why medical school is mandatory. P.S. Incidentally, you won't believe how easy it is to find a spell checker and/or thesaurus on the internet or would you be happier if I just recommend a good tutor? |
@nigeria1, I think you have completely missed the point. Nobody is saying that Prof. Ibiyemi is not a brilliant man but that does not mean that an individual has to be lectured by him to become a good programmer and I am positive that as able as Prof. Ibiyemi is, he certainly can't teach you everything you need to know about current real world programming methodologies. The point is that education and learning is certainly a good thing but it is not an absolute requirement to being a good programmer. Incidentally, not that I'm defending Seun as I know he's perfectly capable of doing that himself but I'm curious to know how can you say with such certainty he's not a programmer and/or computer guru? |
In view of the fact that Obafemi does not believe it was a robbery attempt since no attempt was made to steal anything, it reminds me of a question Bill Shankly was asked during a chat show interview in 1981 as follows: Shelley Rohde: "Someone said football is more important than life and death to you?" Bill Shankly: "Listen, it's more important than that" It would seem that one or more people are taking this sentiment literally which is in now way a good development and more importantly doesn't do our image abroad any good at all. I can only hope that in the fullness of time we get to learn what the motives behind the attack were and those responsible are made to account for their actions. |
@my2cents, I take your point |
@luckyCO, Nice one! @jenwaf, I see that you have posted this same topic again https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-60433.0.html despite the fact that luckyCO's sample code above demonstrates a solution to the problem. Is it specifically writing the solution in C++ and/or Pasal that's the issue? |
This is the same topic as this post https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-58672.0.html in which luckyCO's sample code (which he wrote in various languages) demonstrates one solution to the problem. Is it specifically writing the solution in C++ and/or Pasal that's the issue? |
I'm 100% with Seun and my2cents on this one I have always believed that in Nigeria we put way too much emphasis on academic qualification and often ignore the practical hands on experience that an individual may have. I'm certainly not advocating that it's not a good thing to have a relevant qualification but having said that I have met a number of people who have a degree in computer science but don't really understand the real world environment and worse still lack the motivation for self learning. As has been said, a good developer should have a proactive attitude to learning.
I don't see anyone mentioning interaction with the end users. they're the ones you're developing for, and should be a part of your overall development process.
Very good point! |
@luckyCO, I hope you won't think that I'm being unnecessarily critical however I see a few problems with your C# & VB.NET sample code as follows: - If you enter the same non prime number in both text boxes, the application still reports the number of prime numbers found as 1 which I guess is due to your choice of divisor. - Your code assumes that the value entered in the 2nd text box will always be greater than the value entered in the 1st box - Your code allows me to enter negative values whereas I believe the general consensus is that negative numbers cannot be prime. - Your code does not check to ensure that a numeric value was entered in both text boxes and in fact there is no error handling at all I appreciate that your intention was just to provide an example however I still think it's helpful to ensure that there are no basic errors in the code or make it clear that it is only an example and not meant to be bullet proof. |
