Sports / Red Card: Was Sani Kaita's Lunacy Chemically Induced? by Fdeveloper(m): 4:14pm On Jun 17, 2010
I can only assume that just before the Nigeria v Greece game Sani Kaita either ingested, sniffed or injected some mind altering chemical substance that caused a complete disconnect between the admittedly small part of his brain that would normally contain a modicum of common sense and the rest of his brain which sadly is clearly incapable of rational thought.

Politics / Re: Prostitution Banned In Abuja by Fdeveloper(m): 5:01pm On Jun 15, 2010
I would like those who are vehemently opposed to prostitution to explain to me exactly how the existence of prostitution personally affects their lives to the extent where they are calling for a ban.  To the best of my knowledge, no prostitute will come to anyone's private house uninvited and in the same way nobody is forced to go to any clubs or brothels where prostitutes are known to operate so why such strong emotion about an act between two consenting adults in private?  Please don't respond with religious arguments as not everybody believes in God.

To give another example, I don't smoke and I therefore don't allow or condone smoking in my house or in my car but I would never go to my local public bar and start shouting that the government should ban smoking there because I don't like it as the owner would rightly tell me if I don't like it I can always leave and find a bar where the owner doesn't permit smoking.

As has been rightly mentioned above, we have many more serious problems that deserve the undivided attention of our political administration and i see this as just grandstanding and playing to the large number of hypocritical people we seem to have in our society.
Programming / Re: Where Are The Java Programmers? by Fdeveloper(m): 4:17pm On May 06, 2010
@gozzilla:  At the risk of deviating slight, I have 2 final questions:

- Excuse my ignorance but how exactly are java packages handled differently in an IDE (whether you use ant or not)?

- To the best of my knowledge, ant is a tool used to amongst other things compile source code and not build source code or am I missing something?
Programming / Re: Where Are The Java Programmers? by Fdeveloper(m): 1:27pm On May 06, 2010
@gozzilla: So are you saying that a beginner must always learn java the hard way?

The official java tutorial from Sun recommends using an IDE to learn java and I would suggest that they in all probability have a little more experience with these things than your good self

Car Talk / Re: BMW X5 Vs Mercedes-Benz ML - Which Would You Choose? by Fdeveloper(m): 3:43pm On Apr 28, 2010
In my opinion, BMW's are for people that enjoy driving cars that are sporty, responsive and with a good racing pedigree whereas the typical Mercedes owner is much more likely to have a driver and is more interested in comfort, luxury and smoothness. I don't believe that one is necessarily better than the other as in my view they both cater to slightly different market segments.

Personally, I would always choose the BMW X5!
Programming / Re: Where Are The Java Programmers? by Fdeveloper(m): 12:09pm On Apr 27, 2010
The thing to remember is that an IDE is just a tool and which will greatly assist a rookie developer in learning the fundamentals as quickly as possible.  In my view one of the key things about being a developer is the ability to produce quality solutions in as short a time as possible and the IDE helps you avoid time consuming errors such as simple spelling mistakes etc.  Using System.out.println() as an example, whether you type it in full in Notepad or select the methods and/or members from a list in an IDE the bottom line is you must still know the syntax and frankly I don't see how typing it out in full helps the learning process in this instance.

A good developer will always make good use of good tools
Computers / Re: Please Help Me With Steps On How To Installoracle9i Release 2 On Linux by Fdeveloper(m): 11:53am On Apr 27, 2010

Programming / Re: Mysql Instance Is Not Installing On Vista I Need Help by Fdeveloper(m): 11:58am On Apr 26, 2010
@Bussy Mama: You need to be more specific in order that someone might be able to help you:

- What exactly do you mean by it's not installing?
- Is there an error message being displayed and if so at what stage during the installation?
- What version of MySQL are you trying to install?
- Did you download the MySQL package from their website or did someone give it to you?

These are just a few question that immediately come to mind but the more information you can give the more likely someone will be able to help you resolve the problem.

Career / Re: Ericsson Moves To Sack Nigerian Employees, Hire Indians As Replacement by Fdeveloper(m): 1:32pm On Apr 23, 2010
Unpalatable as it may seem, this is one of the consequences of having a free market economy which in my opinion is the only way business can really flourish. The fact of the matter is the government is not really in a position to pass drastic labour laws such as is being proposed here for fear of capital flight and retaliatory action. I'm almost 100% sure that the majority of posters complaining here wouldn't do so if the position were reversed and Nigerians had the opportunity to relocate to India with well paid jobs waiting for them.

I'm not saying that I'm happy about what is happening but it is one of the prices of capitalism that most countries have to pay at one time or another.
Software/Programmer Market / Re: Vb Programmers Wanted Urgently In A Leading Software Company In Lagos by Fdeveloper(m): 11:01am On Nov 30, 2009
@Doztok,

There is quite a fundamental difference between VB6 & VB.NET and in my experience not all programmers adapted to the implementation of OOP in VB.NET very well so I would argue one cannot just assume that anyone with VB6 knowledge would automatically become a good VB.NET developer?
Software/Programmer Market / Re: Vb Programmers Wanted Urgently In A Leading Software Company In Lagos by Fdeveloper(m): 6:27pm On Nov 24, 2009
I'm afraid I would have to question your claim to be a "fast growing" company with several "reputable clients" nationwide if your developers are still working with Visual Basi 6.0 & Microsoft Access in this day and age or am I missing something?

Career / Re: Government Should Refund The School Fees Of Unemployed Graduates by Fdeveloper(m): 5:23pm On Mar 18, 2009
The fact of the matter is that possession of a university degree does not in tself guarantee employment and this applies all over the world.  In the majority of cases, we in Nigeria tend to feel that having a university degree earns you the right to have a job however all it does is to give you is a competitive edge over those who don't have a degree. You should also remember that generally, the prospective employer will also consider other attributes such as being a team player, interpersonal skills, self motivation etc. before selecting the right candidate.

I don't agree therefore with the notion that the government should refund any fees paid to obtain a degree in the event of unemployment particularly since neither the government nor the academic institution entered into a contractual agreement with the student that employment would be guaranteed on successful completion of the course.
Programming / Re: My Fellow Java Programmers Might Like This, its Not A Main Class Though by Fdeveloper(m): 4:47pm On Nov 28, 2008
@donkoleone

I think you may have missed the point of the criticism being levelled at you. It appears you have made the same mistake many aspiring programmers make in concentrating on the language rather than first having a clear understanding of the principles of programming.

What I mean is that in my opinion you would do well to fully understand the principles of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) first and then learn how to apply those principles in Java. Had you done so, I suspect your code would not have been so linear as you would have made more use of classes and also you probably would have included exception handling etc.

Travel / Re: Horrific Crash Involving Petrol Tanker On Lagos-Ibadan Road by Fdeveloper(m): 6:07pm On Nov 01, 2007
My heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.

I have to say that from my experience, I agree with the view that accident was most likely caused by the tanker driver's recklessness although of course the bad state of the expressway was clearly a contributory factor. The sad thing is I can't help feeling that even if all the roads in Nigeria were perfect we probably wouldn't see see a significant drop in the number of accidents resulting in serious injury and/or loss of life because reckless drivers would drive at even higher speeds in badly maintained vehicles which is of course a recipe for disaster.

I'm not saying that our roads should not be repaired however we also need to find a way to educate drivers of all vehicles on the benefits of observing basic road safety and ensuring their vehicles are well maintained.

Programming / Re: Vb6 To .net Converter by Fdeveloper(m): 6:10pm On Sep 18, 2007
Visual Studio comes with a built in converter however due to the significant differences between VB6 and .NET there is no converter that is able to do a full migration. In my opnion you would be better off redesigning and rewriting the application and thus making use of the OOP (Object Oriented Programming) features in .NET
