Health › Disease Worse Than Ebola Hit Nigeria by Fedric(op): 6:41am On Apr 17, 2015

The strange disease outbreak that has claimed more
than twenty five lives in Ode Irele in Irele Local
Government Area of Ondo State, still fears people dead.
In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the
community leader, Ayodele Omole, stated that the
“strange ailment” broke out on Wednesday morning and
had already created panic among residents, adding that
many people were fleeing from the community. In a
radio broadcast, the Ondo State Commissioner for
Health, Dayo Adeyanju, confirmed the outbreak, but
assured residents that it was not Ebola.
Even though the source of the epidemic has not been
determined, Mr. Omole stated that many residents had
blamed it on an “evil spiritual attack.”
“We noticed the strange ailment yesterday
(Wednesday),” said Mr. Omole. “Several people lost their
sight before they died instantly.
“As at the last count, in the early hours of today
(Thursday), more than 27 dead bodies were counted in
the streets of Irele.
“Unlike yesterday, people are now scared of carrying the
bodies because of fear of infections. Some residents
have fled the community for Ore town while others are
planning to leave for Akure for total safety.”
He stated that, in addition causing blindness, the
unknown disease also caused victims’ tongues to swell
abnormally, rendering the victims incapable of speech,
prior to death within a few hours.
Mr. Omole said many in the community saw the ailment
as having “a spiritual cause,” adding that they believed it
was beyond the control of state health officials. He
added that the residents were hoping that some
traditional healers would quickly come in to help.
A young resident in the town said the gods in the
community were angry because “some section of the
shrine was recently destroyed and some sacred objects
stolen by unknown people.” He said some worshipers of
the deity and traditional priests were meeting to
discover those behind the theft.
Meanwhile, the state government has confirmed the
outbreak of the “unknown disease,” adding that it was
on top of the situation.
In a broadcast on a state-owned radio station in Akure,
the state capital, the Ondo State Commissioner for
Health, Mr. Adeyanju, said the ravaging disease was not
Ebola as some feared. The commissioner stated that
health officials and equipment had been deployed to the
community to curtail the spread of the strange disease.
“The community outbreak team informed us yesterday
morning of disease outbreak in Irele. The unknown
disease isn’t Ebola as it doesn’t manifest any of its
symptoms, but only attacks the central nervous system
of the victims.
“We can’t really say what is responsible for this ailment.
It was clear that those who had died had no symptoms
of vomiting or diarrhea,” said Mr. Adeyanju, adding that
the symptoms of the ailment included headaches and
loss of sight prior to death.
“The disease has been spread to the whole town and it
has been very difficult to trace it to a particular source
because it had already spread across the whole local
government of Irele,” he said.
The health commissioner disclosed that investigations
had commenced to determine the cause and source of
the strange epidemic stressing that blood samples from
some victims have been taken to a laboratory in Lagos
for tests.

My heat faint," my heart don break into pieces" . Am just wondering if na because of Money God call Pastors.

A friend of mine is having spiritual problem " things hasn't been successful for them, they are 6 girls and 2 boys, non of the girls are married, the boys are not successful in their carrier.

They have prayed fervently, fasted and went to mountains for prayer but it seems their prayer is not getting to God. They decided to go to a prophet of God " he is a through son of God" to their greatest surprise, the prophet told them that something was done on their father's land that they will have to pray on the sand from that land.

he concluded by saying that every member of the family are to bring #7,000 for prayer "compulsory". But if they want him to go and pray on the Land, they are to bring #60,000 for prayer.

Men this thing makes me think that there is no real pastor anymore, all what they want is money money money.

I just don't understand why God said ask it shall be given, knock it shall be open. While people keep on asking and receive nothing, " pls don't judge me, for majority"

When someone look and think about how all this so called pastor, prophet of God make money, no one will ever serve GOd.

yap very possible, I was a victim last year. My exam time was 7 am and I get ther 8:30 am, 1 hours 30 minutes after exam start and we were all stop at the same time. Pls goo as early as possible.

My time is also 6 am am just confuse because is 2 to 3 hours to the exam hall

WHAT IS THE ESSENCE OF A RELATIONSHIP? It is quite obvious that when you ask people this question, all what they say is to know and understand our self before marriage. I tell you if you live with someone for a thousand years you will never understand the person fully,

Nice to see that my Profession is been talked about...

@Op, am a Doctor of Optometry (OD). And its good to let u know dat Optometry is 'extra-lucrative'. Its not a very common and saturated course like Medicine and nursing. But it has got a class of its own.
It has not gotten to the height of Medicine and Surgery, but we are growing rapidly...the monetary and professional gains out dia is great. But like oda courses, u need to have passion for it, carve out time to study it over the 6yr period and get ur rewards.

Dnt be discouraged. Mind u, am not "hyping" the profession as some may think. It has its downs too, if u fail to plan very well.

To you op, I'll just take you back to what someone earlier had pointed out; you shouldn't study a course "just" because its lucrative. If you want money though, you should choose something else... Importer exporter comes to mind #igboboy

Optometry is a 6 years professional program that is not fully appreciated in Nigeria due to politics, ignorance, greed and the like.

In the United States, Optometrists earn anywhere between $70k to $150k per annum. Optometrists working in the middle east like UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia earn anywhere between $1,300-$3,400/month TAX FREE. In Nigeria, most Optometrists working in private clinics and hospitals typically earn below N90k per month (N1.8m/yr). If you are lucky to work in any government healthcare facility, you can earn upto N250k per aside from extra money you can make from private "runs" called PP.

Most graduates or students studying Optometry didnt apply to study OPT but were rejected by college of medicine (MBBS)so had to fall back to Optometry including myself.

Is Optometry lucrative? Well...its what you make of it depending on your level of ambition, tenacity and hardwork. It took me 12 yrs of hardwork after graduation to start reaping the benefits...it might be shorter for you.

If I would make the decision all over again, I will DO ANYTHING to study medicine and surgery. There's simply no comparison between the two programs in terms of prestige, recognition and remuneration. An entry level medical doctor in the middle east makes starting salary of $10k per month tax free with free health insurance, airticket and accomodation.

I sincerely wish you luck as you set out on this very long and tortous journey.

When you have an idea about the aim/goal, it helps your drive..

BTW you can do very well in Herbal medicine if you have love and passion for it

OK, there is a Difference between Optometry, Optician, ophthalmology etc majority of peeps will not be able to answer your question. BUT I ll tell u from personal experience, Most people in optometry are people dat did not get their preferred option which was Medicine, so Most of them go tru the program feeling sad all tru,
I ll tell u why u should not study optometry:
1- I believe u did not choose the program, u are looking for a reason to like it because dat is what u probably were given

2- Are u ready to stand the dichotomy Medical students ll give provide all tru u years in skul and even in ur professional career?

3- Quite Frankly there are almost 80% of ladies doing the programe. Hence seen as a womans course

4-Nigerian Factor has limited optometry to opticians. Without Lasik surgery

5- I can go on and on

But I can also give u reasons why its also a great program

Wrong choice, if you ask me. Spending 6 stressful years in University for this course is not worth it. Unless you just wanna answer Doctor.

I would advice you to go for Medicine. But if it seems too difficult to gain admission for that, you go for Dentistry/Nursing or Med. Lab. Science.
