Popular lawyer, Femi Falana, has attributed the shift in the dates of the general elections to the leaked tape alleging the rigging of the Ekiti State gubernatorial election last year. Speaking at the Black History Month and Dr. Beko Ransom Kuti Memorial Program in Lagos, Wednesday, Mr. Falana said some of those implicated in the plot, who were threatening legal action, should think otherwise. An audio recording revealing how some Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, chieftains connived with security agencies to rig the Ekiti State election was released by an army officer last week. At the meeting, as evidenced by the recording, prominent officials of the PDP were heard discussing strategies for rigging the 2014 Ekiti governorship election, a poll in which the party eventually won by a landslide. But some of the actors, including Musiliu Obanikoro, a former Defence Minister, and Ayo Fayose, who defeated the incumbent governor, denied being a party to the plot to rig the election and questioned the authenticity of the recording. Mr. Obanikoro had also threatened a court action against news organizations who had published the conversations in the audio tape. Despite their denials, the Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, who also attended the meeting, confirmed Sunday that the tape was authentic. He however disagreed with the context of the discussion, saying the meeting was never about plans to rig the Ekiti State election. Speaking Wednesday, Mr. Falana said that none of the participants in the recording had successfully challenged the army officer’s account of the incident. “I understand that Mr. Obanikoro (whom he described as a ‘thug’) says he will go to court. I can assure you here, I dare him to go to court. He can’t. It’s not possible,” said Mr. Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. “One of the reasons they postponed the election last week is that disturbing revelation by that Captain. That is what they wanted to do for the entire country. That revelation has sent them back to the drawing table. They now have to re-strategize.” Mr. Falana criticised President Goodluck Jonathan for “embarrassing” the country with his repeated trips to the Holy Land, instead of channelling such funds to job creation. Since he became the President in 2011, Mr. Jonathan has travelled for pilgrimage twice. “I was reading the papers yesterday, the president said in violation of the peace accord, that governors in the north have not been sending Christians to Jerusalem. In other words, they have been sponsoring Muslims to Mecca,” said Mr. Falana. “Please tell the president that there is no provision in our law for sponsoring anybody to Jerusalem or Mecca. “Section 10 of the Constitution provides that the Nigerian State shall not proclaim any religion as an official religion. Therefore, appropriating billions of Naira every year, wasting money to send people to Jerusalem or Mecca is illegal. “If you must know, less than seven per cent of Israelis are Christians, so they make jest of us. When you descend on them, that you are there to worship Jesus Christ, they’ll be like ‘are these people Ok?'” Mr. Falana also insisted that the general election must hold and whoever emerges winner should be allowed to govern the country. “And I’m challenging Edwin Clark and others, all those old men with expired ideas. Femi Okurounmu and others,” he said. “We never saw them when we went to the streets of Lagos and Abuja to proclaim Goodluck as acting President. You were in the streets of Lagos, where were these characters? They were nowhere to be found. “In fact, quote me. Baba Clark called me in one of our protests, ‘Femi, my son. Please keep it up. We from the Niger Delta cannot join this struggle now.’ I said why sir? He said ‘because he’s our son.’ I said what has your son got to do with the quest for justice? “Professor Wole Soyinka, at the age of 71 (he was actually 76 then) led us in the protest. Please tell them this country belongs to all of us.” On the issue of deployment of soldiers during election periods, Mr. Falana noted that nowhere in the Nigerian Constitution, Electoral Act, or the Armed Forces Act was a provision made for soldiers in election. “So when they told Jega that they are going to be busy in the north east and they will not be able to secure the election. Please there is no provision for those Service Chiefs to police our election,” said Mr. Falana. “Under Section 76, Section 116, Section 132, and 117, it is the exclusive responsibility of the INEC to fix dates for election. Only INEC. Not the president, not the NSA, not the security chiefs. Knowing that, they then came in fraudulently by saying that they cannot guarantee your security. “They have not been able to crush Boko Haram in six years, what magic are you going to perform in six weeks? Please we reject their fraudulent claim.” Mr. Falana maintained that it is the duty of the police to maintain law and order in peace time. “Soldiers have no business in town in peace time. Their duty is to defend the territorial integrity of our country, not to police election,” he said. “That is the business of the Police. As a matter of fact, even Boys Scouts can police elections in Nigeria. You know why? On the day of election, there is restriction of movement. It is illegal for you to leave your ward for another ward. Only journalists, observers, and election workers can move round. “So if everybody is restricted, why do you need soldiers to come and help you? To do what? But I will tell you why they need soldiers. You know why they need soldiers? To rig the election. armyofone:Yes it can be scary especially in the middle of the night. Few years ago, I did a road trip with my uncle from houston texas to naples in florida. Along the way we did a detour into a very small town restaurant not far from Mobile, Alabama, guys I haven't been so scared in my life, as we are the only two colored guys among the local population. We immediately order our food as takeaway instead of sitting down to eat - by the way the 'southern chicken wings' were the best i ever had. The article below was written before the election was rescheduled: The meeting was star-studded by local Nigerian standard. These were few elite sons-not a single lady in the meeting-of Ogbia people in Bayelsa State holding in Yenagoa in Bayelsa State. It was presided over by the late Chief Emmanuel Igoniwari in his capacity as the Asiwaju of Ogbia Land. The local muckety- mucks were deliberating on who to choose among them to pair with then governorship candidate of the PDP, Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyesiegha for Nigeria's first post-military democracy after the death of Luciferous Sani Abacah in 1999. DSP wanted a running mate from Ogbia land, because of the block voting of the Ogbia people. As Benson Sunday Agadaga, an Ogbia elite and classmate of Goodluck Jonathan, who was present at the meeting on that day told this writer, DSP sent words to the Ogbia local power brokers that they should give him an Ogbia man as his running mate, because, DSP as someone from Amassoma in Ogboin LGA would not be able to win the 1999 governorship election in Bayelsa without a running mate from Ogbia LGA. DSP wasn't looking for a performer, but anyone to balance the delicate ethnic politics of the Ijaw nation in the 3-year old state in 1999. "The position of deputy governorship was already zoned to us by DSP and we met to present a candidate," volunteered Agadaga who later became the first commissioner for information and culture in the state in 1999. It was someone at the meeting that mentioned the name of Goodluck Jonathan who was not present at the meeting in Yenagoa and as Agadaga disclosed in my co-authored book; "Jonathan; the Squandering of Goodluck," during an interview in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State: "When the name of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was mentioned, there was pin drop silence in the meeting, because no one spoke." The silence became prophetic. When eventually Chief Igoniwari met Mr. Jonathan later, Jonathan declined to accept the offer. " I don't want anything to do with Nigerian politics," Jonathan, who was a working at OMPADEC told the Asiwaju of Ogbia people, because, according to Mr. Diekive Ikiogha, another good friend of Mr. Jonathan, while talking to the writer in Yenagoa, "Jonathan didn't want to have anything to do with politics. He is too decent for the rough and tumble of Nigerian politics and besides, he didn't have the money and also the fear of the unstable Nigerian political terrain." Any objective analysis of the current disaster known as the outgoing Jonathan Administration in Nigeria must begin from the political beginning of Nigeria's accidental president. The late Chief MKO Abiola once said that, if you want to know whether a fish is good or bad, smell the head. But that is only half-truth; to know whether the head of a fish is good or not, go back to the water it was fished from. How did a man who garner an unprecedented support and overwhelming goodwill of Nigerians five years ago suddenly become so politically radioactive today that even his own party and people do not want anything to do with him? How could a popular president that all of us labored and rooted for barely five years ago suddenly become an anathema and a goner before our very eyes? Where did Mr. Goodluck Jonathan get it wrong and turn into bad luck? Someone once said that leadership gravitates to anyone who craves and earnestly desires and fights for it, but the reverse is the case in the Nigerian context. Leadership of any type is a burden, and especially, political leadership is a great responsibility which should not be given to anyone who doesn't fight and earnestly desires it. Nigeria has been haplessly presided over by prodded men; fortuitous leaders who had other things in mind but were woken up to take up political leadership. Because Nigeria's somnambulistic leaders hardly rise beyond their dreams and are bereft of ideas and ideals greater than selves, the nation's fortunes have been shambolic and retarded. It is against this tragic backdrop that Mr. Goodluck Jonathan's leadership style should be understood. Mr. Jonathan didn't become a disastrous and non-performing leader overnight, just as the rotten fish didn't show us ahead from its head. Mr. Jonathan didn't deceive Nigerians about his lackluster and dour personality; rather, Nigerians deceived themselves on Mr. Jonathan five years ago with the blinkers of ethnicity, tribalism and religious bigotry. If President Barack Obama were a Nigerian seeking to be Nigeria's president in 2008 as a black man, he would not win. This is why Nigeria can never become the United States and a Jonathan armed with large dose of goodluck can never become, even a mayor of a city in the United States. Look at some of the great indices Nigerians use in choosing their leaders and compare such indices with the Nigerian environment. Does it matter where a citizen of a nation come from in aspiring to the highest position in the land as long as he/she is a bonafide citizen? Why all of a sudden now in 2015 after five agonizing years under the train wreck known as Goodluck Jonathan did Nigerians realize that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is far better than this PhD (?) holder as president? Mr. Goodluck Jonathan didn't plan to be a public office holder in his adult life. As we scrutinized his record from his primary, secondary to university days in my co-authored biography of him, every responsibility he had ever assumed were thrust on him from the shoulders of otherness. He had never aspired to any responsibility on his own volition, rather had always been prodded. As Winston Churchill once said about public leadership, a society should not entrust political leadership to someone who has to be prodded, and only the one who is the prodder rather than being prodded values the sacred trust of public leadership. From Mate Dei High School in Imiringi, Ogbia Kingdom in present-day Bayelsa State where he was prodded to be a head boy; appealed to by his local compradors to be a deputy governor, to being drafted to become a vice president and accidentally planted to become president, Mr. Jonathan has always been prodded rather than being the prodder. This is why he has disgraced the exalted office of the Nigerian presidency and made a disaster of public leadership. It takes more than goodluck to run a functioning and well-organized administration; it requires adroit and astute leadership to govern a nation rather than waiting and relying on goodluck, because in these Age and Days, goodluck is in short supply. Because Nigerians are still not sure if they have a nation or a country, men like Goodluck Jonathan will always appear on the national scene. Because majority of Nigerians have that mental retardation toward public office, including the presidency as a big enchilada for all to butcher and divide at will, Jonathan's psyche is a mirror of the generality of Nigerians. The Asari-Dokubos, Edwin Clarke Tompolo and their bedfellows are threatening brimstone and Armageddon in 2015, if Goodluck Jonathan loses not because they are concerned about Jonathan's performance. It is because of the fear of losing access to public funds and oil wealth being presided over by Mr. Goodluck Jonathan. Their fear is that another Ijaw man may never become the president of Nigeria again in their lifetimes and so the rest of us must be held hostage by a non-performing president. Consequently, the two choices before Nigerians in this year's presidential election are the future of all of us or few of us; the interests of Nigerians or the narrow interests of Ijaw Nigerians. This clearly shows the Armed Forces have been politicised by the Government, little wonder no advancement was made in relations to defeating Boko Haram. I can bet my last dollar that similar meetings have taken place in relations to how to make the Armed Forces uneffective in the fight against insurgency in the country. In other countries, the President will have resigned, suspended by the party and subsequently charged to the law courts along with his fellow minions. I think GEJ needs to resign immediately, but that won't happen. I listened to the audio and I was ashamed to be a Nigerian. Little wonder the world does not take us serious anymore. 4 Likes |

The reason why I asked this is that, based on your financial resources, you and your spouse are over the financial threshold of £18,600. This is taking into account your spouse's basic pay and savings which should be around £19k. However, if there's one dependent, then the threshold amount to qualify for spousal visa will increase to £22k. Please double check if this is the reason for the refusal and yes you can always appeal. Goodluck. |

The lack of running water killed more people in Nigeria last year than Boko Haram. While the terror campaign claimed more than 4,000 lives, the shortage of potable water and poor sanitation led to about 73,000 deaths, according to WaterAid, a London-based nonprofit. The water deficit isn’t limited to isolated areas in the country’s vast north. In Lagos, about 15 million of the coastal metropolis’ 21 million have limited access to piped water. Africa’s accelerating urbanization is colliding with governments’ failure to provide the most basic services. Next year alone, Lagos will add more than the population of Boston, worsening its infrastructure shortfall. “Water is strained, transportation is strained, housing is strained,” Toyin Ayinde, the state commissioner for planning and urban development, said in an interview. Folks still need about 25 gallons a day, the state-run Lagos Water Corp. reckons. That’s where Mohamed Adamu comes in. Starting at 5 a.m. every day, he fills 10 jerry cans and walks down rutted streets to deliver clean water to corrugated iron-roofed homes in the Otumara district about a half-hour walk away. Vendors like him are known as “mairuwa” -- or “water owner” in the Hausa language. “This is just something to do until you get a better business,” said Adamu, 36, who migrated two years ago from northwestern Kebbi state, some 530 miles away. “It’s the type of work you can’t do for long because it’s hard on the body.” Flight to Lagos Thousands like him have fled northern Nigeria to escape both the rural poverty there and the Islamist insurgency in Africa’s largest economy. The government says Boko Haram has killed more than 13,000 people since 2009. They killed at least 4,740 last year, more than double the number in 2013, Bath, U.K.-based risk consultancy Verisk Maplecroft estimates. “Everybody is worried about Boko Haram but the average Nigerian continues to see water as a private good not a public good that has to be provided by the government,” said Idayat Hassan, director of the Centre for Democracy and Development, a research institute based in the capital, Abuja. The water company’s capacity is 210 million gallons a day compared with the 540 million gallons needed by Lagosians. Its potable piped water reaches about 7 million people. That leaves two-thirds of the city struggling to find safe water. “Mairuwa are one of the most common forms of informal water supply,” said Oluseyi Abdulmalik, a communications manager at WaterAid Nigeria. “They’re filling the gap of what government’s utilities should be doing.” Meeting Demand Lagos water officials have developed a $3.5 billion plan to more than triple capacity to 745 million gallons a day by 2020 to meet a projected population of 29 million, according to Shayo Holloway, the company’s group managing director. The third-biggest killer of children under the age of 5 in Africa is diarrhea, a disease that can -- in nine out of 10 cases -- be prevented by access to safe water and sanitation, according to WaterAid. Nigeria accounts for 11 percent of all global under-5 deaths, according Unicef. Nigeria isn’t the only sub-Saharan African country struggling with shortages; 325 million people on the continent didn’t have access to improved drinking water in 2012, according to a World Health Organization and Unicef joint report last year. Dakar, Accra, Abidjan and Nairobi were cited as other water-stressed cities. Reselling Barred Today’s water woes were deepened by a 2009 law that barred past distribution methods. Until then, residents who could afford a direct connection to the main line stored water in tanks and sold it to neighbors on a pay-as-you-use basis. When such reselling was made illegal, police seized vendors’ tanks and disconnected them from the mains. “The mairuwa took advantage of our stopping to bring water from outside,” said Ogundele Agbede, 80, a retired civil servant who was forced to shut his sideline selling water after more than 30 years. Vandalism of the water pipes remains frequent and even when the pipes are intact, the flow is as erratic as electricity supply in a country that suffers from daily blackouts. At the Dustbin Estate slum, where the ground is soft from building over a refuse dump and swamp land in the city’s southern Ajegunle district, pipes paid for by development organizations are often broken. Sanitation in the community is poor. Residents dump bags of trash and feces into an adjacent canal, looked on by grazing goats and emaciated cows. One, named as Zhen Liu, 43, had the handwritten message on the ground in front of him saying: 'I failed to beat my sales targets.' Another, Ming Chou, 39, had the message: 'I have to kneel down on the bridge for one hour as punishment for not finishing my job.' The images of the named and shamed employees went viral after they were uploaded by shocked passer-by Zhu Ku, 29. She said: 'I saw people spread out across the bridge with their heads bowed, chanting they were sorry. 'There was no indication what sort of company they worked for but it certainly doesn’t look like a fun one. For some of us who regularly use the MMIA in the past 4 years...i can say that only a fraction of change has been done. The baggage area on arrival is still very hot...the cooling system is not existence...even worse if 3 airlines should land within minutes. The carousels are the slowest I have seen in my life...someone said earlier that they are designed to hold luggage less than 30kg...but carousels from other airports were able to operate well without any fault despite the heavy load by Nigerians. Apart from the expansion of the immigration area...there has been little changes The last time I travelled, less than 2months ago...i even noticed an officer of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) checking up Nairaland - 'politics' page on his pc...goes to show that internet connection at MMIA is working. |

In the “Black Church” it is imperative that you have a title and/or a position. Let the church say ‘Amen’ and let’s all go home- because I just revealed the truth. That’s right, if you don’t carry a title that resembles: Bishop, Elder, Minister, First Lady, Deacon, Arm Bearer, Mother of the Church, etc- you are not important. The black church is a cult that justifies materialism and titles. The Black Church use titles and positions to please people, to make connections and gain approval amongst other affiliations and the community. There are individuals who worship these false preachers, mother’s, elders, and bishops because of their position. What many people fail to realize is that whenever you worship another human being you are committing what is called “Idolatry”. Burkina Faso MPs agree to cut pay by half Members of parliament in Burkina Faso have decided to cut their salaries by half. The move followed heated exchanges on social media after it was revealed that MPs were paid more than $3,000 (£1,985) a month. The average salary in the West African state is about $150 a month. One MP said the pay cut would promote better governance and rebuild confidence in democracy during a year-long transition to elections. The former National Assembly in Burkina Faso has been replaced by an interim parliament, the Transitional National Council (CNT), as part of arrangements following the forced resignation of long-serving ruler Blaise Compaore last year. Mr Compaore seized power in a coup in 1987 and went on to win four disputed elections. 'Abuse of power' Tens of thousands of people took part in protests in Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou, in October over moves to allow him to extend his rule, eventually forcing him to step down. Lt-Col Isaac Zida is leading the transitional government Members of the 90-member CNT have been paid a gross salary plus attendance fees, office allowances, healthcare supplements and fuel costs. Campaigners, including grassroots political movement Balai Citoyen, have said MPs should not be paid attendance fees and have pointed out the substantial gap between their salaries and average earnings. Another campaign group, the Coalition Against Costly Life, has said a maximum salary of $900 would be sufficient. Revelations about MPs' pay prompted angry reactions on social media, with many saying the pay levels amounted to an abuse of power. A BBC correspondent in the region, Anais Hotin, says that after fighting for a change of government, people in Burkina Faso are determined to put in place a better system to achieve social justice. The transitional government is led by Lt-Col Isaac Zida, who was among army officers who took power from Mr Compaore. He has promised to return Burkina Faso to civilian rule through elections later this year. Femi Fani-Kayode, the spokesman of the PDP presidential campaign organisation, says Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC, represents “evil” and “darkness”. He was addressing the media on Wednesday at the campaign headquarters of President Goodluck Jonathan who is seeking re-election next month. He said: “We wish to inform you that it is our intention to run a clean campaign that is based on facts, figures and issues. “We shall not indulge in the type of cheap propaganda, mud-slinging and deceit that the APC and their Presidential candidate have been indulging in over the last few weeks and months but it is our full intention to expose General Muhammadu Buhari for what he really is, what he stands for and the great danger that his candidacy portends for the unity of the Nigerian state and the peace and well-being of the Nigerian people. “More importantly, we shall let the world know about the sterling performance of our candidate, President Goodluck Jonathan, over the last four years and we shall make a strong case and appeal to the Nigerian people to grant him the privilege and opportunity to serve a second term. We believe that we have reached a crossroads in our nation’s history and that the forthcoming Presidential Election is a battle for the very soul and destiny of Nigeria. “We believe that it is a struggle between light and darkness. We believe that General Buhari represents the darkness and that President Jonathan represents the light. A shocking video allegedly showing a Lagos State politician performing a strange ritual while naked has been posted on the internet by a controversial Nigerian pastor. The video titled, ‘APC – A Satanic Party’ was posted on video-sharing website YouTube by ‘Archbishop Samson Mustapha Benjamin’, the General Overseer of Lagos based ministry Resurrection Praise Ministries International, popularly known as ‘Jehovah Sharp-Sharp’. In it, a man he alleges to be Hon. Olusola Israel Adekunle, the local government chairman of Alimosho, Lagos, is seen stark naked in a swampy area sitting on a horse. He is heard muttering some unintelligible words before pouring a reddish substance all over him which the cleric described as ‘human blood’. The video was preempted by an article on a Nigerian blog several months ago, revealing that during the ‘ritual’, Hon Adekunle had placed curses on his political enemies while appealing for favour in the eyes of the national leader of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu. About two weeks after Nigeria’s secret police, the State Security Service [SSS], cleared a former Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, of any link to the extremist Boko Haram sect, PREMIUM TIMES has obtained a video suggesting that President Goodluck Jonathan is personally aware and strongly convinced of the former’s governor’s longstanding relationship with the founder of the sect. In the video clip, shot in April 2013 during a visit he made to Borno state, Mr. Jonathan was heard describing Mr. Sheriff, who was then a member of the opposition All Progressives Congress [APC] as a “friend” of Mohammed Yusuf, the man who founded and led Boko Haram for years. Mr. Yusuf died while in the custody of the Nigeria Police after he and a number of his followers were arrested following a bloody clash between the sect members and law enforcement. During his visit to Borno that April 2013 to persuade Borno leaders and residents to accept a heightened military presence in the state until the insurgency is checked, Mr. Jonathan suggested that Boko Haram evolved, blossomed and took up arms against the Nigerian state during Mr. Sheriff’s reign as governor of the troubled North-East state., As commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, President Jonathan regularly has access to a multiplicity of security reports, and many believed he spoke from a position of knowledge at the time. The video features the president, dressed in agbada and a cap, and clutching two microphones in his left hand while he addressed his audience, trying to defend the militarization of Borno and other states in the northeast region. In his speech, Mr. Jonathan argued that the militarization of the region began after the crises that trailed the murder of the Boko Haram founder. For a moment, the president could not remember the name of the slain Boko Haram leader and he called on the audience for help. “Ehn ehn, what is the name of ehn ehn Governor Sheriff’s friend?” the president asked. The audience clapped and laughed. Some echoed Yusuf! “When Yusuf was killed, that was the beginning of the crisis…” the president continued his speech. When Yusuf was killed, that was the beginning of the crisis… A history : Ali Modu Sheriff and Boko Haram Mr. Sheriff’s alleged link with Boko Haram dates back to his days as governor of Borno between 2003 and 2011. Multiple security sources, politicians from his home state and residents of Borno claim Mr. Sheriff was close to the group and and its leadership, and indeed appointed a member of the sect to his cabinet as commissioner. Recently, an Australian negotiator, working with the Nigerian government, Stephen Davis, also claimed that the sect’s top members told him Mr. Sheriff was a key sponsor of their activities. On December 16, the SSS exonerated Mr. Sheriff after it paraded six men – including a former special assistant to current Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima. The SSS claimed the suspects admitted fabricating the scenarios the Australian negotiator relied on to make his claims. A leaked security intelligence dispatch obtained by this newspaper also suggested Mr. Sheriff has link with the sect. The memo claimed Mr. Sheriff personally oversaw the training and deployment of fighters from the Abeche region in Chad. In Abeche, Mr. Sheriff operated from the lodge of the Chadian President, Idris Deby, the memo claimed. After joining the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] in July 2014, Mr. Sheriff became a close ally of President Jonathan, and top leaders of the ruling party. He now enjoys state protection. Mr. Sheriff has consistently denied any link with the Boko Haram sect.
