Agric’ll Become Nigeria’s New Oil – Adesina

Minister of Agricultural and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has declared that agriculture will become the new oil boom for Nigeria.

The minister’s declaration was corroborated by President Goodluck Jonathan who said the falling price of crude oil did not come to the federal government as a surprise, as his administration was already prepared for it through the agric sector.

Speaking when he launched the Youth Employment in Agriculture Program (YEAP) and the Fund for Agricultural Finance in Nigeria (FAFIN) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the minister said agriculture was Nigeria’s first love where the country’s greater future lied in.

He said, “Therefore, let me welcome you to the new agriculture space of Nigeria. As the price of crude oil plummets, I am convinced that the new currency for Nigeria will be agriculture, not just oil and gas.

“Agriculture will become Nigeria’s new oil. For agriculture was Nigeria’s past and in agriculture as a business lies Nigeria’s greater future for inclusive growth. Now Mr. President, please sit back, relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

“Meet and hear the voices of your nagropreneurs! Today you are in a green bow tie: you are so cool Mr. President. And agriculture is cool!”

Akinwumi noted that YEAP was targeted at 740,000 market-oriented young agricultural producers in rural areas.

He said the target beneficiaries would be school leavers and young rural farmers comprising 20,000 per state of the federation.

He explained that under YEAP, 18,000 university graduates would be turned into agropreneurs and agribusiness leaders along area-based priority agriculatural value chain, even as he said Nigeria was the first country in the world to develop and use e-wallet to deliver farm input.

Preamble
It is pathetic that many of the Agricultural Students presently in tertiary institutions still seek to re-write UTME or get a change of Course form to transfer to another Course in the same Institution. This is simply to ensure that they are professionally in good standing for their future Livelihood. Scarcely will a young School Leaver have the desire to study any Agriculture-related course as his/her first choice of Career. This is due to the stigma attached to the Discipline as a poverty-stricken profession, hence. The need to promote the ‘Face of Agriculture as a valuable, fashionable and sociable’ profession to be engaged in the 21st century!
It is a well-known fact that agriculture is the bedrock of any economy and for a nation to thrive, Agriculture must be given a priority and a pride of place for economic sustainability. In Nigeria, historically, Agriculture was the major source of revenue but since the Oil Boom, Agriculture has not been given due recognition in the Economy. This has led to a sharp decline in the economic growth and development of Agriculture. People are no longer interested in practicing Agriculture as it is seen as non- lucrative and meant for the poor rural dwellers. Most youths are generally dissuaded by farming parents not to follow in their footstep as a farmer and some are not even willing to study Agriculture at the University level. Even those that are in the University studying Agriculture were “thrown” into it for various reasons and are not willing to practice it after graduation but prefer to go in search of a ‘White Collar Job’. This is the reason why Students of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology (SAAT), Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) seek to change people’s thinking and perspective about Agriculture so that Students studying Agriculture would stop feeling inferior among their peers. It is time Agriculture got a new face, hence this concept: TRANSFORMING THE FACE OF AGRICULTURE.
The Take-off Event
The table turned around on 24th September, 2014 when staff and over 1000 students of the SAAT, FUTA trooped out to sign the banner of the Face of Agriculture with the inscription “I believe in Agriculture, I study and will practice Agriculture as a career, “Agriculture is life,” “Agriculture is what I do”, etc. as an indication of being a proud Agriculturist. The concept of the banner signing was to get Agricultural Students motivated, change their perceptions about agricultural practices and make them identify themselves as proud Agriculturists. The banner was up as early as 8:00am such that as people came around the school building and they saw that their colleagues in Agriculture were signing, it encouraged them to do same.
The signing of the banner was also used to create awareness about the ‘Face of Agriculture’ programme which came up on October 1, 2014 as this was a National Issue: to transform the Face of Agriculture in Nigeria. Before the day of the Banner signing, some did not have a good understanding of what Face of Agriculture was all about but at the sight of the banner, everyone understood the concept and began to endorse the banner with their signatures. The Dean, SAAT, Head of Departments and students all appended their signatures on the Banner.
While the signing was going on, Students were seen discussing the challenges and prospects of Agriculture and being agriculturists, they took pictures with the banner as background and some were seen updating their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts with the picture of the banner and their status read words like, “I am a proud farmer." This is not a usual practice with Students in Agriculture.
The Main Event
On 1st October 2014 in Hilltop Auditorium, FUTA at 10am, Secondary School Students, Students of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology; Lecturers, Policy Makers, other Stakeholders and Invited Guests gathered to witness the ‘New Face of Agriculture.’ Dignitaries were at the Occasion such as: Dr Badejo, sub Dean, SAAT; Barr. Bolanle Olafunmiloye, Chairperson of Wealth Creation Agency (WECA), Ondo State; Kayode Bolaji, Executive Director Peace building Development Foundation, South Africa; Mr. Ogunlade, C.E.O. Matna Foods; Barr. Banjo Ayenakin, Legal Practitioner; Mr. Bode Famose, Director National Orientation Agency, Ondo; the Representative of Bank of Agriculture (BOA) and Gbenga Adejumo, M.D Kharis Farms; and Dr. Ogunsuyi, Associate Director CEGIST and NIWARD among others. The meeting opened with a Red Carpet Session, where well dressed Youths and Dignitaries met to continue the signing and endorsements on the Banner of Face of Agriculture. The event continued with a speech by the President of the National Association of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, FUTA Chapter. The conventional Agriculture song “Ise Agbe” was modified to a Hip Hop song and included mechanized farming by a group of FUTA artists. KAYODE Bolaji gave a speech on the “Relationship between Food Security and Human Security.” He emphasized that for a nation to be secure, there had to be food security, which means availability of food and stability of economic access to food over a long period of time. Barrister Olufumiloye, Chairperson of WECA, enlightened the youths on the opportunities available to them and how to access these opportunities as provided by the State Government if they were interested in practicing Agriculture. Mr. Muyiwa Oladosu showed the youths the value chains that are waiting to be harnessed in Agricultural Business. There were two plenary sessions in which top officials and role models in different fields of Agriculture enlightened the youths on issues that bother on Agriculture such as Law and Agriculture (lawgronomy), job opportunities, challenges in agriculture and how to start agriculture as a business.
Recommendations
Titilayo Femi Kings, a Master’s Student in Agricultural Extension and Communication Technology FUTA and the Coordinator of the Project-"Transforming the Face of Agriculture in Africa"-shared his burden that brought about the Project and read the recommendations of over 1000 Students and Youths, highlighting certain activities in the society hindering them from having an economic interest in Agriculture. He requested for urgent intervention from all levels of governments to put an end to all of it. These include:
1. A stop to the publications of Textbooks that show farmers graphically portrayed in poor and tattered clothing and the profession should be shown in the new understanding that Agriculture is a business that has high potential Economic Value;
2. Put a stop to punishing Secondary School Students with cutting of grasses. This action should be abolished as it shows the Profession as an unpleasant job, rather a means for punishment. Farmers’ Club should be encouraged in schools;
3. Television and Radio Programmes in Agriculture should be youthful, interesting and using it to communicate value chains attached to economic growth through agricultural development and innovations; (Our team presently have Synopsis of an agriculture TV programme that can keep viewers glue to their sets; the programme is awaiting sponsorship on any national TV);
4. Lands and inputs for agriculture should be made available for the use of practicing Young Farmers from Secondary School Level up to the Tertiary Institutional Levels;
5. Bank of Agriculture should make loans available to undergraduates involving the help of a Student Support Service Centre in the Institutions.
6. The group called ‘Agbekoya’ should begin to relate with students and youths in general and also help them get lands when and where necessary in all available places;
7. The Wealth Creation Agency (WECA) should create Programmes that support undergraduates that have innovative ideas on agriculture;
8. The significance of value chains in agriculture should be communicated to Pupils and Students early through the curriculum at the Primary and Secondary Schools levels;
9. Agriculture teachers should begin to teach Agriculture in more interesting ways to make the subject more valuable;
10. The curriculum in agriculture should be revamped in the Federal Ministry of Education with respect to its youthfulness and outlook;
11. Scholarships should be given to students who choose to study agriculture;
12. Parents should stop using their own social and economic status to promote careers in agriculture and related field as shameful economic opportunities to their wards;
13. Federal, State, and Local governments, as well as Donor Agencies should support this cause as we are ready to go on what we call ‘Aggressive Evangelism’ also nicknamed ”Agrovangelism” to communicate the new Face of Agriculture in any other tertiary institution secondary and primary schools;
14. The usual mode of dressing of farmers should change.



Other Highlights
There was a value chain contest in which a Speaker was chosen to represent each of the 8 Agriculture Departments in FUTA. Each of them tried to convince the audience that their Department had more value chain than the others. They all did well but there could only be one winner! The Department of Agricultural Extension and Communication (AEC) carried the day, the Department of Food Science and Technology (FST) emerged first runner up and Animal Production and Health (APH), the second runner up. The announcement of the winner of the competition marked the end of the programme. The event was filled with truth, fun and knowledge. History was made in FUTA as Students waited till the very end of the Programme even after the refreshments was served.

The first time I noticed my son’s odd habit was when I carried him on my legs in church, I realized he would become quite uncomfortable when my hand was not resting on his crotch, not his thigh, but his crotch, at first I thought maybe he was in pain, and I initially got worried, bit I later noticed his hands where going between my legs, this was not an unconscious action, he knew exactly what he was doing, because I brushed his hand away and gave him a stern look, but moments later I noticed he was doing it again, so I had to drop him off my legs and made him sit on a chair by himself, and did I mention my son was just 4 years old?
When we got home, I brought it to the attention of my husband, and in his usual manner he tried to make light of it, and even chastised me for even thinking our own son would be trying to get fresh with me, maybe he just misses you, he obviously doesn’t know what he is doing or where his hands where, my husband said, and after-all you are gone before he wakes up, and in bed before you return, so don’t blame the boy for trying to get as much attention from you as he possibly can, he added, but I was not convinced, what if my son had been exposed to pornography or had started hanging out with bad kids, I mean it’s never too early to start, especially in this day and age, it made me worry.
The next day I called his teacher on the phone and asked her to keep an eye on him, I told her I had noticed some changes in him and I didn’t want the damage to be irreversible, my son’s teacher assured me she would do her best to make sure he wasn’t exposed to the wrong set of people, satisfied with her response I laid all my worries to rest.

THE WORLD DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER “CAIN”

My world, your world, our world, someday, will surely experience peace, justice, tranquility.


Yes, I mean someday our economy will blossom.

I mean someday our education sector will deliver sound products.

I mean someday our political arena will know sanity.

I mean someday our industries will rise up to expectation.


Particularly this great nation, Nigeria, will be free from all human made shackles obstructing her movement to the true class she belongs to among nations globally. But if this must be, we need to stop the intrusion of CAIN into our world.

CAINs are positioned people with no positive impact.

CAINs are people that have weight, occupy space, but do not MATTER.

They are vagabonds, mockers,armed robbers,cultist,harlot, obstacles, yet they are celebrated products of a home.

“CAIN” don’t really last but the effect of their works lasts longer than they do. They affect generations negatively, they sting and kill great visions.

It pains my heart to tell you that the firm that produces this product called “CAIN” does so unconsciously, and also feel its pains, because they are not conscious of the virus that constantly waits to contaminate this product anytime it comes into existence. This virus called Lucifer is readily committed to its deadly cause. It has successfully contaminated a lot of products, starting from the first CAIN, and it is still spreading daily.

At this juncture, I’ll like to tell you that you’re the products I am talking about. Just check yourself to know if you’re contaminated or not (by their fruits we shall know them).

I also want you to know that you are either a potential Director (single) or already on the two-man Board of Directors (married) of this manufacturing company; so let’s check again, are your products contaminated or not? Psalm 127:5.

In clear terms, I am writing to challenge the cause of intending couples (marriage) and married couples with children (parenting).

How good it would have been if Adam and Eve were prepared and purposeful about the child production aspect of their lives, then Cain would not have ended up the way he did.

Please take note:

* Cain was not released from heaven contaminated.

* He was not created for destruction.

* He was packaged for greatness.

* He was the first fruit of God’s institution of marriage, so he had everything well for him, but Adam and Eve were not conscious of the virus – Lucifer, and it successfully corrupted their first product.

It was so clear that they were not prepared for this assignment of child rearing. So they could not have been purposeful about it. No wonder, the treasure God gave to them became corrupted by the ever prepared and committed virus, which is still going about looking for whom to devour.

However, Adam and Eve sat up quickly to prevent their second product from contamination. Good one!

Hmmmmmmm, I can imagine their labour on Abel, but see what the contaminated Cain did to the preserved Abel. MY POINT EXACTLY. Our schools, churches, industries, and the society at large is filled with “Cains” who are busy contaminating the Abels and killing the great visions in them.

Though nobody gives birth today and calls his baby “Cain”, the “Cain” effect is still evident around us. What then is the solution? I do not have the final solution to this challenge but here are my recommendations.

SINGLES

* Know God for yourself and by yourself.

* Be purpose-driven.

* Choose your spouse prayerfully and purposefully.

* Start preparing and praying for child bearing and rearing (parenting) immediately you decide on marriage.

Else, I recommend that unmarried couples be made to prove themselves as successful couples before they are allowed to start child bearing.

PARENTS

* Keep praying for your children instead of cursing them.

* Live your life the way you want your children to live theirs.

* Don’t give up on that one that looks infected like “Cain”. Just keep praying; speak positively into their lives; keep reminding God of His promises over your child, someday I know there will be a turnaround.

My life and testimony is proof of this.

NOTE:- vagabonds, mockers,armed robbers,cultist,harlot, bank fraudters,yahoo boys,political thugs of today are between age 13 and 35,be informed they were babies in the hand of certain parent many years ago,in 2033. 20yrs time,I perceive there would still be armed robbers,assassin,etc. Our question is this hope the babies in your hand today will not be part of them.
I pray for you parents and intending parents this will not be your portion.

I and my wife are determined by the Grace of God that our children Irorunoluwa and Iranlowooluwa will not turn out to be a problem to this nation but a solution provider to this world.

We hereby call on all young parents and intending parents to ponder over this and make a commitment as well

THE WORLD DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER "CAIN"

My world, your world, our world, someday, will surely experience peace, justice, tranquility.


Yes, I mean someday our economy will blossom.

I mean someday our education sector will deliver sound products.

I mean someday our political arena will know sanity.

I mean someday our industries will rise up to expectation.


Particularly this great nation, Nigeria, will be free from all human made shackles obstructing her movement to the true class she belongs to among nations globally. But if this must be, we need to stop the intrusion of CAIN into our world.

CAINs are positioned people with no positive impact.

CAINs are people that have weight, occupy space, but do not MATTER.

They are vagabonds, mockers,armed robbers,cultist,harlot, obstacles, yet they are celebrated products of a home.

"CAIN" don't really last but the effect of their works lasts longer than they do. They affect generations negatively, they sting and kill great visions.

It pains my heart to tell you that the firm that produces this product called "CAIN" does so unconsciously, and also feel its pains, because they are not conscious of the virus that constantly waits to contaminate this product anytime it comes into existence. This virus called Lucifer is readily committed to its deadly cause. It has successfully contaminated a lot of products, starting from the first CAIN, and it is still spreading daily.

At this juncture, I'll like to tell you that you're the products I am talking about. Just check yourself to know if you're contaminated or not (by their fruits we shall know them).

I also want you to know that you are either a potential Director (single) or already on the two-man Board of Directors (married) of this manufacturing company; so let's check again, are your products contaminated or not? Psalm 127:5.

In clear terms, I am writing to challenge the cause of intending couples (marriage) and married couples with children (parenting).

How good it would have been if Adam and Eve were prepared and purposeful about the child production aspect of their lives, then Cain would not have ended up the way he did.

Please take note:

* Cain was not released from heaven contaminated.

* He was not created for destruction.

* He was packaged for greatness.

* He was the first fruit of God's institution of marriage, so he had everything well for him, but Adam and Eve were not conscious of the virus - Lucifer, and it successfully corrupted their first product.

It was so clear that they were not prepared for this assignment of child rearing. So they could not have been purposeful about it. No wonder, the treasure God gave to them became corrupted by the ever prepared and committed virus, which is still going about looking for whom to devour.

However, Adam and Eve sat up quickly to prevent their second product from contamination. Good one!

Hmmmmmmm, I can imagine their labour on Abel, but see what the contaminated Cain did to the preserved Abel. MY POINT EXACTLY. Our schools, churches, industries, and the society at large is filled with "Cains" who are busy contaminating the Abels and killing the great visions in them.

Though nobody gives birth today and calls his baby "Cain", the "Cain" effect is still evident around us. What then is the solution? I do not have the final solution to this challenge but here are my recommendations.

SINGLES

* Know God for yourself and by yourself.

* Be purpose-driven.

* Choose your spouse prayerfully and purposefully.

* Start preparing and praying for child bearing and rearing (parenting) immediately you decide on marriage.

Else, I recommend that unmarried couples be made to prove themselves as successful couples before they are allowed to start child bearing.

PARENTS

* Keep praying for your children instead of cursing them.

* Live your life the way you want your children to live theirs.

* Don't give up on that one that looks infected like "Cain". Just keep praying; speak positively into their lives; keep reminding God of His promises over your child, someday I know there will be a turnaround.

My life and testimony is proof of this.

NOTE:- vagabonds, mockers,armed robbers,cultist,harlot, bank fraudters,yahoo boys,political thugs of today are between age 13 and 35,be informed they were babies in the hand of certain parent many years ago,in 2033. 20yrs time,I perceive there would still be armed robbers,assassin,etc. Our question is this hope the babies in your hand today will not be part of them.
I pray for you parents and intending parents this will not be your portion.

I and my wife are determined by the Grace of God that our children Irorunoluwa and Iranlowooluwa will not turn out to be a problem to this nation but a solution provider to this world.

Even for children who may be willing to maintain the lifestyle given to them by their parents, they begin to feel inferior to their mates;in the bid to feel among, and also due to ignorance which is caused by the parents, they begin to learn every wrong thing and there will be no sieve to separate the lies from the truth. I call this type of children “freedom gainers.”

They have never been free at home; their father is the lion of the tribe of the family. I work at present at the students’ affairs division of a university and I see such children regularly.
