HOW TO TAKE ACCURATE BODY MEASUREMENTS....

When it comes to body measurement, there are different things to consider


1}The person being measured should stand straight, on both feet, some 15 cms apart.

2} It is better to wear fitted clothes when measuring. Absolutely no baggy clothes. This can skew the measurements.

3}It will be perfect if you can wear lingerie you intend to wear with the final garment, while taking the measurement. This is especially important for perfectly fitted clothes like a tight gown, fitted blouse/corset. A push up bra will make all the difference in your final look. 

4}If you plan to wear heels and you are making a long gown, do not forget to wear the heels or a similar one when taking measurement

5}Choose a good and accurate tape measure. Keep it level (parallel to the ground) all the time you are taking horizontal measures

6}Adhere to the old saying –Measure twice and cut once

7}If you can get another person to take the measurements, it is the best

8}All circumference measurements should be taken with tape measure parallel to the floor and with enough slack in tape to just slide 2 fingers under tape.

9}Do not assume that just because you sucked your breath in, the garment will turn out to be perfect. It will not. Just be true to yourself

HOW TO TAKE ACCURATE BODY MEASUREMENTS....

I WANT TO SAY SOME FEW THINGS BEFORE WE GET STARTED.

The most important thing in fashion design is knowing the basics. Once you get the basics very well, the other things(like new styles coming up)and other things to learn will be a minor thing. What really helped me was that where i learnt i was given a very good basic lesson...not that she taught us everything,but she took her time to give us good basic foundation and i picked it up from there.
• Basic things like knowing your measurements very well and cutting accordingly. Sewing neatly on a straight line or on a regular curve, being able to see a design and drawing just as it is seen and also labelling it to show the bust area and so on, to know if it’s a gown or skirt and blouse and so on like that.
• You don’t assume measurements , here accuracy is the key, any slight deviation from the actual measurement as small as 0.5 inch is absolute error. Although in fashion design u can convert a mistake to another style..thats another thing to note.
• Also, determination is a very important factor in learning fashion design..being able to continue keeping on till you get it. The deep interest to get what you are being taught no matter what and of course ,patience, the more the practice, the more perfect you become. My tutor always tell us then that practice makes perfection..
Don’t give room for discouragement; you didn’t know it that is why you came to learn.
Feel very free to ask me questions when you are not sure of something, I don’t mind repeating myself severally till you understand.
Take note of any correction, follow instructions and don’t take them for granted, so as not to slow down your learning.
Many fashion tutors have different methods of making styles ,most times we all arrive at the same result…I like to make my teaching really simple for us to understand, take note of this too..learn with an open mind.
I would have added that being passionate is another factor,but you wouldn’t have been here if you were not passionate about it in the first place.

8. Brown paper
9. Fabric/Ankara (cheap ones)
10. Sewing machine or needle & thread
11. Seam ripper and masking tape
