Dru, I have always enjoyed your posts and openness on this thread but I think baz001 is right on this one. There are different IT fields where one can do two jobs or even 3 comfortably. That your friend is a programmer and decides to stick to one job is his choice but then again, I agree that programming jobs are tasking fields that demands attention especially if you're working for start up firms. There are IT fields one can go in and comfortably do two to three jobs. Jobs like - Cloud software engineers Automation test engineers Penetration testers Scrum masters IT project managers Cyber security experts IT is a broad field and if you don't get the right information you'll delve right into programming and think that's all to IT. Along the line you'll find out it's tasking and you weren't cut out for it. I have a friend who moved to the US in 2020 and he does two jobs comfortably, earns over 100k usd per month in each of them and can work from anywhere. He's Cloud software engineer and literally does two jobs. Told me he's looking to add a third when he's done with another certification course. There's nothing like enough money and if he can do two jobs to earn double per year comfortably why settle for less. I have another friend in who is a pen tester and he's with 2 companies in that same US. These day's youth are smarter now, even while working, they are looking out for Jobs that are less tasking but pay more and they can even do two jobs while at it. One of the highest paying jobs in the IT field in the US and worldwide which is cybersecurity is not as hard as people think and you only need python basics to proceed with it. Programming is just but a subset in the IT field, the trick is to learn one of these key languages - Java, python and Javascript and go into a field like data science, Test automation, cyber security, AI. Then sit down after learning, maximize your time and earn more money. Web development which most people just call programming is what we mostly know here in Nigeria as IT, this might not be as high paying in the future and is gradually getting saturated. I am in Test automation and I can tell you that I can do three jobs if I want here in Nigeria. I work remote and I control my time and resources. All I do is to have my test suite ready and when handed a project I run my tests, get results, analyse and that's it. I tried coding( web Dev) but that wasn't for me because I didn't have the patience for that . I dropped my 2nd job last month because I am now taking a new programming language class as it is a requisite for the new role I am eyeing . All these because I want to be ready for the market when japa comes. And I just got into the IT field this year. As Bazoo rightly said, young graduates who move to the US within the last five years are more likely to make more money because they are better informed and armed with the right skills than those who went way before them. You can still be driving and learning at the same time. Read, research and know where your strength lies as IT can accommodate all.. But that's if you're between 28 - 40 with the zeal to get into the new future where IT will be the real deal in the market sector. I posted here one time last two years or so that I needed a driver for one of my cars (camry sport 09) but I was advised against putting it up by someone here. I decided to not put it on e-hailing as I had a Corolla coming in. And when the Corolla came in, I looked at the market and decided it was not worth me (personal opinion) so I sold it. Things got rough last last year and I started bolt with the camry. I made the switch this year into IT (no certification, just knowledge) and stopped driving this year. Nothing beats the peace and money that comes with doing what you love and at your own time. I have learnt a lot from this thread and I hope this will also spur some people to see this as a stop gap, give yourself a target of 6 months to 1 year to stop driving and use that time to learn and upskill.. Finally, e no easy but e go easy if you put your mind there. Special respect to Pearl1910 for your utmost maturity, Felicity,Dru, Pope, gentlelife, you guys keep the thread going and informative... |

I've read through all the posts here as regards my last post and I'm appreciative of all valid takes. Those that contacted me understood the terms and are free to consider. Someone here said I'm being helped. To fix a car you'd also benefit from in the long run. You have no access to credit and you want to manage someone's fleet or car. I wouldn't want to leave my car or cars in the hands of a desperate man. If I was a driver, I'd even prefer it this way because if payments from your contribution are to be spread across 10 months to one year, you will have an assurance of job security as against when a partner can give you a car and yank it off you at any time leaving you without a car again. But I am not, that's why I want to hear valid reasons why what I suggested is bad or uncalled for. Some comments made on faceless forums are the reason why some people don't go far in life (they still might because I'm not God) . People run background checks before they conduct business and the most people that have been beneficial to me in my line of business are acquaintances I made on social media. So Learn to be civil with your interactions when few people are watching, and even more civil when more are. I've had interactions with two or three popular nairalanders from the thread in real life and I must say they I wasn't really impressed. However, I'm open to learning more so I can understand how I am being the exploitative one here and change for the better in being a good Partner or employee. |
