Politics / Re: What Do You Think About My Boss' Parable? by fidorocks(m): 9:03am On Dec 15, 2015
ENEONWO:
Your boss is the greatest fool to have ever walked the surface of the earth! By his warped argument, we should all keep developing the economy into some few pockets. We must focus all attention on developing the economy, after which some people would embezzle all the money and the next government would look the other way because your boss would accuse them of neglecting the economy at the expense of the war against corruption, so; they must also focus all attention on developing the same economy. So, we continue running in the cycles of develop-loot/embezzle-develop- loot/embezzle. Your Oga is advising that if you build a house and it is fails, you go back to build on the same place without first arresting the cause of the failure! Let me tell you that if this country must succeed, Buhari must ensure that a thorough and sustained war against corruption is done. That way, whatever progress we make will not be eroded by avaricious officers of the state, whose stock-in-trade is primitive acquisition of wealth at the expense of national development.

this is the best response I have read so far

Career / How To Make Extra Income As A New Wig Part 2 by fidorocks(m): 5:29pm On Nov 12, 2015
Many law report publishers engage young lawyers to for the task of editing law reports after which they are paid stipends based on the number of judgments edited for publication. In fact many new publishers would engage lots of new wigs to help with the editing of the backlog of old judgments. You can help out with that and the good news is that you read and learn about legal principles which will come in handy someday and get paid as well.

Career / How To Make Extra Income As A New Wig by fidorocks(m): 3:16pm On Nov 10, 2015
This post is a solution to the problem. However, I must sound a warning.
This post is not any of those “how to become a millionaire” post. There are many of such scams online you can read. This post is just a simple guide of how you can make extra income by the side while you learn the practice of law during pupillage. They are practical things you can do that would not affect your job or practice but would rather complement them and give you “extra income” (not millions) to augment whatever you make.

Career / CV Writing Course For Lawyers Part 2 by fidorocks(m): 11:08am On Oct 15, 2015
Besides this, achievements related to the field of law or practice of law carry more weight. Just imagine an achievement like some of these;
“I graduated in the top 20 category out of a class of 200 people”

“I emerged the overall best speaker at the Moot Court Competitions during my stint at the Lagos Campus of the Nigerian Law School. My performance was specially recognised and commended by the Chief Justice of Nigeria who was present at the event”

“As a Corps member, I was in the team of lawyers that arranged for the release of over 20 prisoners who had been held without trial or bail for over 5 years”

“In less than 9 months of active legal practice, I had appeared in all superior courts of records and inferior courts of record in Kaduna State”

“I hold the record of the first and only Corp member to commence and conclude 5 civil and 6 criminal cases at the Oyo State High Court while serving at the Ministry of Justice.”

Career / Cv Writing Course For Lawyers Part 1 by fidorocks(m): 10:29am On Oct 13, 2015
The main guide to drafting the perfect resume is brevity. Keep it short. #short #brief. A CV says who you are and compressing everything about you in a page or two is quite difficult but possible.
Why you might ask? Well, recruiters get many CVs daily and it’s possible your CV will get less than 6 seconds glance before it is stored away or trashed. So keep it so brief that a lot could be seen about you under the 6 seconds of observation. 6 seconds is a very short time but long enough to get you noticed and given more perusal if your CV jams real good! The secret of “cooking” good CVs is about to be revealed. This is the recipe.

Education / Law Students Corner; Think Internship by fidorocks(m): 12:23pm On Sep 08, 2015
Internship! Yea you heard right! There is a whole world of difference between what you are taught in school and what obtains in real life in legal practice. The only way you can see the practical application of what you are taught is by interning in a law office or law chambers!

You need to intern in a law firm to know that bail is not free! You also need to intern in a law firm to know that going to court is not all that a lawyer does. There are many things lawyers do but unfortunately, the curriculums in our universities are geared towards making us litigation robots.
The curriculum also focuses more on the substantive area of litigation. You need to see and feel the practical aspects. You will see how originating processes are filed and served. I recall that it was after I interned in a law office after my 3rd year, that I was able to file suits at the moot court in my faculty. I had been put through drafting court processes by the lawyers in the law office. To think that I achieved that feat in my 4th year makes me very proud.
Besides, nothing is as confidence and morale boosting as the act of drafting court processes, letters and agreements while you are still a student. The adrenaline rush and excitement motivates you on your return to school, to finish up and join the profession.
I recall being given the task of taking down the minutes of a meeting with a client who had come to draft his will. My hands wobbled as I wrote down the instructions he dictated. He was a very wealthy man and reeled out a list of real properties, shares in companies and cash in different bank accounts. I recall being asked to type the said minutes of the meeting and the testator’s instructions on the office computer and not my laptop to ensure confidentiality.

Literature / Short Story: Everybody Hates Lawyers by fidorocks(m): 1:17pm On Aug 05, 2015
I had carefully crossed the four lane Oshodi/Apapa Expressway after I alighted from a Mile 2 bound Danfo bus. I was fagged out from the days job but not too tired to notice a large crowd of people watching a fight between a Danfo Driver and an Agbero. I quickly took a good place amongst the spectators. In today’s world where people paid as high as a $100, 000. 00 to watch a Mayweather v. Pacquiao bout, who would reject a more exciting offer to watch a street fight for free.

It didn’t take long for the driver to knockout out the Agbero before the end of round one (now that’s a record that will make even the world’s greatest Muhammed Ali jealous) and our Agbero was reduced to a bruised and bleeding pulp. Satisfied and heeding to pleas of some of the female spectators who feared it could quickly end like a “Roman gladiator’s fight to the death”, the driver entered his bus and nearly ran over the near dead Agbero but for the timely intervention of spectators who quickly dragged the latter off the driver’s path.

Career / For Lawyers; Quick Guide On How To Deal To Deal With The Police by fidorocks(m): 12:35pm On Aug 05, 2015
Below is a quick guide on how to deal with the Police:
1. As a new wig, never trust a policeman or woman when they give you guarantees or make promises. No policeman is honest. Yea, there might be an exception to this but then the exception goes to prove the general rule.
2. Do not be hostile but show no signs of fear or weakness when dealing with them. Police may hate you more for being very fierce and aggressive but then they won’t love you either if you are calm and gentle. They will take advantage of you.
3. Aggression and fierceness though recommended (but should be sparingly used) scares the shit outta the police. The police station is where people are broken down and feel it’s the end of the world, so a lawyer barking and raising hell in a station with junior officers cowering is a sight policemen avoid like hell. It destroys their perceived invisibility. But like I said, use same sparingly and know when to stop otherwise, the police could arrest you for “conduct likely to cause breach of peace”.
4. Be smart. Play on the junior officers’ intelligence. The junior officers most times are not the recipients of the “bail money” but senior officers. Promise them something after you have secured the release of your client. They will quickly run around with the little you can offer for bail to the sum demanded, with the hope that they will receive extra money which the seniors won’t be part of (will tell you a funny story on this point later on).
5. Dangle some cash or promise of cash. Forget hierarchy, the police worship cash and their desperation makes them easy magas. Dangle a carrot or two to some officers if you meet a group that is hostile, that will break their solidarity. In fact you need not make the offer, one of the officers will approach you to help with his colleagues.
He will promise to help you get in touch with the superior who is not in the office, he will ask for N100 to buy recharge card. Give him N500 and watch how his countenance changes. He will work against his colleagues for more and usually without demanding for any cash first. Well after, he helps you secure the release of your client, what do you do?
Give him something for “helping” you release your client they ought not to have arrested in the first place by collecting say N5, 000 instead of the N50, 000 they had asked for initially? You must be joking!
