Travel / Re: Nigerian Lady Kicked Off Turkish Flight For Assaulting Air Hostess (Pics, Video) by FIZIK: 9:10am On Jun 01, 2017
During take-off, airplanes can tilt to a rather scary angle sometimes. I would not be very surprised if carrying an uncovered water-can presents some level of risk. That being said, I have carried bottled water into the plane a couple of times. The ultimate question should be learning the airlines position on serving water before playing the race card.

It would have probably been a free-for-all brawl if the hostess responded in kind. That I think is commendable.

Forum Games / Re: Which Tank Will Be Full First? by FIZIK: 6:22am On Jan 03, 2017
Cannot say based on the information given.

How fast is the tap running?
How fast are the tanks losing water?
what level is full and how long does it have to hold water at that level?

If the tap runs faster that the outlets it would be 1 hitting the brim first followed by 2.
If not and assuming all outlets have equal capacity then 3 and 4 would progress simultaneously.

Knowing how things go down here, he will be off the hook pronto. From her account, only 18 rape convictions have been recorded in Nigeria while we are regaled with every other week with old men molesting 4 year olds. The judiciary and media are more interested in the sensationalism of tribunal pay-offs and Sai chanting that all foundations of our moral content has been eroded. She is from means but still knows how far-fetched justice was and the colossal failure of the security system at a young age of 17. There is almost no hope for the common man

Family / Re: Where Should You Build Your First House (city Or Village)? by FIZIK: 8:42pm On Apr 04, 2015
It's not a one-shoe-fits-all answer. It would depend on everybody's circumstance.

For instance, you would not expect a Naturalized Nigerian living in San Francisco to bother about erecting a house in his villa especially if he rarely visits home while he is still renting at an extortionate California rate. I would expect him to take out a mortgage and build equity on the house till such a time he can put up a house in his hometown.

Also, ethnic and religious tensions are still very prevalent in certain parts of Nigeria and I have seen properties torched down and sometimes cornered on this ground. I would not expect someone to build in this location without knowing it is expendable if you are a minority in a violence-prone region. If you must, get an insurance.

I know the south eastern Nigeria to be the most nomadic ethnicity and has always been on the receiving end of most ethnic violence. Would you blame them if they build houses in their hometowns first?

Personally, assuming all things equal,I would minimize cost of living by trying to have my own house where I spend the most money on rent, or a place I can rent for the most profit

Yeah. I tried it a while back and really liked it. Its basically made the same way as every other soup except they replace say our EGUSI or OGBONO with the groundnut paste.
I am not sure about its popularity with any section of Nigeria but I have had my Ghanaian and Camerounian friends make it. Since peanut is cheaper and easier to get here, I might be expanding my culinary skills soon.
Health / Re: NMA Dares Jonathan - Asks Resident Doctors To Reject Sack Letters by FIZIK: 6:28pm On Aug 15, 2014
You would be surprised. I have seen a company lay off almost two thousand workers in Jos and our inept government didn't give a damn.
Why would they care now when they are the ones paying the bill?

Truth be told, these Doctors should take a chill pill. A chunk of our national budget already goes on servicing recurrent expenditure(salaries mostly) despite curtailing the ghost workers syndrome and yet no labor union is satisfied. It was lecturers earlier, teachers sometime ago, Doctors today and may be students tomorrow. I still do not understand why fully employed government doctors corners patients to their private clinic. The dismal service at most Government hospitals doesn't help their case because we get expedited treatments from the same doctors in private clinics.

While the relevance of doctors cannot be underestimated, Some of this decisive actions are necessary to make Capitalism efficient. In just a year of this suspension, we will be suprised at how many private hospitals will upgrade and spring up. If you think you command value, let the market determine that and not holding the government by the balls because you belong to a union. Government should privatize the whole thing and just regulate. Other sectors need a bump in salary too, why should theirs take priority. This issue has been over-flogged abeg, we have younger doctors willing to take over the reins. Give them chance

Igaghi aju ogiga, ju ochicha. Peace!

Education / 2014 WAEC: Our Students’ Failure Is A Reflection Of Our Nation’s Failure —atiku by FIZIK: 6:33am On Aug 15, 2014
ABUJA — FORMER Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, attributed mass failure recorded by Nigerian students in the May/June 2014 West African Examinations Council to the non-chalant attitude of government to education from primary to university level.
He described failure of the students as the nation’s failure.
According to him, the failure of the students is no surprise to anyone, in view of the series of strikes suffered by the school system in the country. Atiku in a statement personally signed and made available to journalists in Abuja, said: “The West Africa Examination Council, WAEC, has just released the results of the May/June 2014 Senior School Certificate Examination. As was the case last year, mass failure was recorded by Nigerian students. “Only 31.28 per cent of the students who sat for the 2014 exam obtained credits in five subjects and above, including Mathematics and English Language.
“No one who has been observing the ongoing attitude towards education in Nigeria will be surprised by this. In the past year alone, industrial action by teachers have dominated the news headlines. Primary school teachers in Benue State, for example, embarked on an eight-month strike to demand better conditions and allowances.
“Teachers all over Nigeria remain poorly paid, with several jokes being peddled about how parents are reluctant to allow their daughters marry teachers.
“In addition to poor welfare, teachers in the Northeast of Nigeria face a peculiar challenge not common to their colleagues in other parts of the country.
The National Union of Teachers, NUT, reports that the organisation has so far lost about 173 of their members to Boko Haram terrorist attacks.
“Sadly, with the Nigerian government not yet able to adequately protect citizens from these random attacks, that number could easily increase.
“There is also the issue of competence of Nigerian teachers. Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State recently lost his seat in a re-election bid with poll results that sent shock waves across the nation, notwithstanding his well-publicised record of high performance.
“One of the reasons political analysts have given for his rejection by Ekiti people was his attempt to improve the quality of teachers in the state by putting them through competency tests. “Teachers in Kwara and Edo states also resisted similar tests.”

Are you expecting that amount from any creditor/debtor?
Did you instruct anybody managing your financial instruments to dispose it on your behalf?
Do you have a relative who could have willed it to you?

lolz..... It's my love for helping others. Someone even told me my course isn't taxing because all I do is to be in the lab...... I was like what the?!......lolz.

I took 28 credit hours (extra hours from elective that comes with lab sessions) of both 1hr:15mins and 45 mins classes (presentations, assignments, exams) and just 6 credit hours of thesis which I'm suppose to be in the lab for 3 hours/3 days a week but still spend all days of week in the lab (sat and sun included sometimes).

All in all, CGPA still is within the laude ranking wink cheesy

Just one month in the US and I had to use password help to log into my dear Nairaland.

Education is fast-paced and demanding, with loads of homework that makes me wonder if I am not gonna break down.
I understand why people rarely post when classes starts (not because they don't want to).
I am wondering how Imperiouxx et al does it.

My suggestion based on experience:
GTBank mastercard is accepted in most payment platforms.
Rather than having people do FX transfers from Nigeria with attendant transaction costs(fixed and %'s), You can have them pay into your Current/Savings account while you use the money here.
Note that for each ATM withdrawal, GT charges #1,000. so what I do is to take out a money order on my GT ATM at Walmart (60cents) or Wells fargo bank ($3 for 3 leaves) and deposit into my domestic checking account here where I don't incur ATM withdrawal charges.
You can take a maximum $5,000 out of your card in a day but you will be required to provide your passport if it exceeds $3,000 for the day.

Be outspoken, ask for clarifications when you do not understand.
Don't think your accent sucks because there are lots of Indians and Chinese who can barely speak the way you do. ( I have been told many times my English(British accent) is great and sometimes I like the idea of an American asking me ''What did you say?"wink
90% of my class composition are Chinese, 5% Indians and few Americans.
At first I wondered how they follow in class but you will be damned to write them off because they are really smart.
Do not isolate yourself, nobody sees you in that way.

I use a calling card (African King) when i call Nigeria.
45 minutes for $5.
Some of my friends use Keepcalling.com.
Its also cheap and convenient because you can pay online.
Skype(I mean purchasing skype credit and calling the Nigerian GSM) is most convenient if enabled on your mobile and not just on your computer.
For domestic calls, visit a cell phone carrier and get a plan tailored to your individual need.
Limit your international calls, you are here to study.
Be sure of what you subscribe to, bills add up real fast.

Be careful what you sign at the leasing office.
It may put you in bad rating if you don't follow through.
Judging by where we come from, you dont need a sea view or pool.
All apartments have relatively the basic amenities you need.
Off campus apartments are usually cheaper if its on the free bus route or you have a car/bike.

COOK, COOK and COOK.
Not only will stop overs at Mcdonald's and Subway for pizza and sandwitch drain your pocket, you'd be imagining how fast you got obese each time you look in the mirror(there's always a big one in the bathroom).
My groceries come from HEB and Walmart.
Basically Rice,egg, chicken, milk, bread.
Who has an idea of alternatives to Beans and garri which I order from Houston at a cost?
Convenience stores are not as good.
Come with condiments if you can.

Come prepared.
It takes money to settle in here no matter how you try to cut cost.
There are many side attractions, only you know your priority.
Maintain a positive outlook and Lastly NETWORK,
That's what you'd have left after graduation.

God bless Nairaland

I got an apartment deal for $428, all utilities except furniture, is that ok?

I travelled down to Seme a few days back to pay my SEVIS fee. Unless I skipped that part of the thread, It is needful to note that if others experience are as vivid as mine, then we need to devise ways of checkmating those extortionate officers at the border. No plea nor reason appeals to their conscience as it appear to have been peddled to greed. I witnessed them empty a Burkina Faso bound man through Cotonou. Though, I was armed with fore knowlege of such, it wasnt that smooth. Excerpts of my experience follows:
The day started on a showery note and changed my plans of heading out early. I left when it had abated and got a cab to Seme from Mile 2(1k) around 10 a.m. The journey was stalled around Okoko for over 30 mins because of dense vehicular movement at the time and a not-too- good road. We got to Seme around 12 pm. I picked out a bike man, told him Ecobank in Seme and boarded. He rode to a checkpoint and we were flagged. (How they identify foreigners from amongst them amidst that large number of people still marvels me, I made sure I wasnt looking my best too). Unfazed and intrepid, I walked up to them.
Me: Yes, can I help u?
Officer: your passport please
M: i handed it over
O: (flipped through the pages briskly) why is it not stamped?
M: Oh! I thought that wasnt necessary since we'r all Ecowas. Could you gimme back so i can go stamp it?
O: to stamp it will cost you abt 3k oo but if you could bring 1k, we'll let you through( after much negotiation, I shuffled a dirty 100 naira note into his hands. Oh boy! The man provoke o, me I form provoke too begin blow grammar. The bike man approached me and said I should have told him earlier that my passport wasn't stamped so he could have helped me do it . I eventually dropped 500 naira.
M: Una go give me person wey go follow me oo no be only to chop money siddon for 1 place
O: (The already provoked man vex stand up) who go follow u!?
Msad i took the cue it was needless to make demands after i tipped and boarded the bike again. But just when we were about leaving, this old man who had observed our drama accosted us and offered to cross me if I will give him 200 at the end. The bike man nodded to me after interpreting and I consented and he got into the bike with us. That could have been my undoing because we were quickly flagged again at the next check point. I walked straight to them again with a mean outlook)
M: how can I help you?
O: passport pls
M: I no get passport
O: search yourself for me(I quickly did that, I caught him stealing a surreptitious glance at the wad of cash i had wanted to use for the payment. I just muttered to myself say dis guy don enta 1 chance if him think say maga don pay)
Osad searching me to validate i showed every) your money na 2k
M: I wont pay a dime, i ve tipped the 1st check point
O: bros, u don pay am finish
M: oga, shi shi u no go see, if ur eye de chuk 4 d money wey u see as u de search me na mistake( d guy park me 1 side, me i park well siddon for their seat sef extend leg dial 1 babe numba for naija, we talk for 9 mins na so i just de tear laff like say i no dey perturbed. It was working, because as I finished d call, the man who offered to help cross me came forward and asked me to give them something. After I form small i give am 2H, they refused and i added another 100H. They still refused. The man kept begging them for ova 20mins then he struck. He gave me a sign he was coming and i thought it was to go see their chief. The man disappeared and after a while i sent the bike man after him but asked him to leave his bike because he had buried my passport in his crotch after the 1st encounter so it dosent give me away as Nigerian. He came back and said he didnt see the man. Come see me, i told all of them point blank that they were patners in crime and knew that man was a crook. I went and sat down again for anoda 15 mins. When they didnt see the man, I noticed they mellowed and i had become impatient too because I feared the banks may close since it was Friday and almost 2 pm. So I just offered 5H and they took, but when I demanded they cross me through the last checkpont they insisted I bring anoda 5H. when my bargain didnt work I summoned the bike man and told him to take me back to Naija, the guy was like Y now, when you've come dis far. I shouted him down and he got into d bike, as we de move, dem no call us bak o. I respect myself come down go give dem 5H mek dem cross me. Na dat time dem begin laugh begin de tell me say I be like bouncer, one even de touch my biceps, na I'm i dare them say na because we dey dia domot, if them just follow me small cross naija i go beat them like small pikin. He brought his bike and i got in. There is no rapport among them because they denied him entry at the next check until he took me to the other exit and was allowed by his man there i guess. The bike man took over again, suprisingly, the bank was just behind the border and could be walked in 15. I was handed a figure that amounted to 38k at the exchange(commission and $200 SEVIS fee). The bank premises was the only serene and civilised place in that Seme. In less than 15 mins i was on my way back. To my chagrin i was flagged again and searched).
O: your passport pls
M: gives him
O: not stamped, search yourself( i did and he saw some remnants of cash) your money na 2k
M: (i laughed) i dont have money
O: ok. Park 1 side
M: ok sir,( as I dey go i tell am say shebi na 2 deport me(which am already doing) be d worst thing wey him go do and na dem go bear the expense sef)
O: by the time you spend 3 days with deportees you go knw how far
M: afraid catch me o, i just give am 5H enter bike come naija. I tipped the bike man 9H for 3hrs of his time. Got a bus to mile 2, I ran down a dry loaf of a phallic-shaped bread predominant at the border with Coke soda in what could be a fastest world record. I could notice the passengers suprise at my voracious speed. I no send naa, i hadnt eaten since morning and was ravenous. Went through a 3hour intense traffic within Lagos town as people had closed from work. Went straight to E-centre in Yaba for 2 chilled bottles of Star and settled for a sumptious bowl of cowtail and another bottle around Ojuelegba before I went home.

SUMMARY:
Dont be intimidated by any threat.
Never hand over your documents, it's their leverage.
If you can, go earlier before the large influx begins.
TRUST NO ONE.. All na the same

RECOMMENDATION:
We need to vote someone credible and willing amongst those in the US who can assist. He/She can give us conditions and we agree.

You may as well stamp your passport and get the so called yellow card for 3k in all at the border before crossing (if you no like gara gara).
Not everybody can be as bold as some of us in that border. Many have swallowed their pride and would not want to recount their gullible/terrible ordeal in that border on this forum. I share their pain.

CONCLUSION:
The 2k wey i give dem plus d 3H wey dat old man carry loss still de pain me sef.
To God be the glory so far on my graduate study pusuit in the US

PS: Further clarifications and suggestions can be highlighted on where I made mistakes but please, do not quote this novel.
