Here are nine foods and
beverages you should avoid when you’re sick so you
can feel better faster.
1.COFFEE
When you should skip it: You have any type of illness,
but especially a stomach bug.
Why it makes you feel worse: The caffeine in coffee is a
diuretic, so it can make you pee a lot and leave you
dehydrated.
That’s bad news when you’re battling a virus or other
infection, since getting enough hydration helps your
immune system fight more effectively, says Kristine
Arthur, M.D., an internist at Orange Coast Memorial
Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California.
Caffeine is even worse when you’re dealing with
vomiting or diarrhea, since both can cause you to lose
fluid. Taking in extra caffeine on top of that will only
make that dehydration worse. (Find out how drinking
too much caffeine affects your body.)
Plus, caffeine can actually stimulate the muscles in
your digestive tract and make your diarrhea more
intense, Arthur says.
2.ORANGE JUICE
When you should skip it: You have a cough or sore
throat.
Why it makes you feel worse: Orange juice’s tart acidity
is usually refreshing. But when you have a cough or
cold, it can hurt your throat.
“It contains citric acid, which irritates the lining of your
already-inflamed throat,” says Taz Bhatia, M.D.,
professor of integrative medicine at Emory University
and author of What Doctors Eat.
That means your throat will hurt more and take longer
to heal.
3.SWEETS
When you should skip it: You have any type of illness,
but especially a stomach bug.
Why it makes you feel worse: Eating refined sugar can
temporarily suppress your white blood cells’ ability to
fight off bacteria, says Arthur.
For a few hours after snacking on cookies, candy, or
sugary cereal, your immune system is weaker.
As a result, it’s less efficient at fighting off the germs
that are making you sick.
Refined sugar poses even more of a problem when
you’re dealing with a stomach bug.
“Sugar tends to pull fluid out of the GI tract, which can lead
to loose, watery stools and diarrhea,” Arthur says.
4.SODA
When to skip it: You have any type of illness, but
especially a stomach bug.
Why it makes you feel worse: Like coffee, caffeinated
sodas are dehydrating.
And they’re loaded with sugar that suppresses your
immune system and messes with your GI tract, says
Arthur.
If water just isn’t appealing, try a lower-sugar drink with
rehydrating electrolytes—like a sports drink or coconut
water, says Arthur.
Diet soda is off-limits, too.
“Many artificial sweeteners are large molecules, which
can’t be broken down and digested well,” Arthur says.
That can cause bloating, cramping, and even diarrhea.
In other words, it just makes whatever stomach
symptoms you’re already experiencing even worse.
5.CRUNCHY SNACKS
When to skip them: You have a cough or sore throat.
Why they make you feel worse: The abrasive texture of
snacks like potato chips, granola, or even crispy toast
will feel like sandpaper on your raw throat, Bhatia says.
And it doesn’t just feel lousy: The more you irritate your
throat, the longer it’ll take to heal, too. So you might
end up actually prolonging your misery.
6. FRIED ORFATTY FOODS :When to skip it: You have a stomach bug.
Why it makes you feel worse: “Fatty foods take longer to
move through the digestive system, which can make
nausea worse and trigger acid reflux,” Bhatia says.
And because they also trigger muscle spasms in your
intestinal tract, they can make diarrhea worse.
Save the burger and fries for when you’re feeling better. |

China and Iran, two countries that top President Trump’s enemies list, are pushing back against his tough talk this week with showy and provocative military drills. Iran conducted military exercises and rolled out new weapons that its leaders said would help national defense, and China tested a new missile following Trump’s Twitter assault on Beijing’s expansion in the South China Sea. Iran’s defense minister, Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehqan, displayed the country’s newest weapons, including a guided missile, a grenade launcher, a rifle and a pistol. The arms would boost the military’s capabilities in individual combat and in air defense, he said, according to the Tasnim News Agency. Iran on Saturday warned Washington against any hostile actions. Iran conducts military exercise in response to Trump’s comments on enemies “If the enemy makes a mistake our roaring missiles will hit their targets,” Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Aerospace Force, said during massive air defense drills, the state-owned Fars News Agency reported. Iran also warned that if attacked, its missiles would target the U.S. 5th Fleet based in Bahrain, American installations in the Indian Ocean and the Israeli city of Tel Aviv. “These points are all within the range of Iran’s missile systems, and they will be razed to the ground if the enemy makes a mistake,” Mojtaba Zonour, a member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission. “And only seven minutes is needed for the Iranian missile to hit Tel Aviv.” The threats came after the Trump administration imposed sanctions Friday on 25 Iranian individuals and entities supporting the Revolutionary Guards’ ballistic missile program. The sanctions were triggered by an Iranian ballistic missile test on Jan. 29 that the U.S. said violated a United Nations Security Council resolution that prohibits launching missiles capable of carrying a nuclear weapon. Iran said the missile was not capable of carrying a nuclear weapon and that testing defensive weapons is its right. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/trump-gets-warning-missiles-iran-china/ |

By Tabia Princewill We have a tendency, in Nigeria, to flout established rules and to turn manageable, controllable events into crises. We do not seem to learn from the past. We persist in making the same mistakes, choosing to gamble with the fates and fortunes of others. However, it should be noted that the President formally communicated his absence to the Speaker of the House and to the Senate President, as the Constitution requires which in itself is unheard of in Nigeria as Presidents rarely willingly relinquish power to their deputies, preferring instead to empower their chief of staff or a member of their kitchen cabinet. Despite this small yet non-negligible element of progress, Nigerians must never stop pushing for what is right. It is unheard of, in most countries led by democratically elected Presidents for the citizens who voted him (or her) into office to be kept in the dark as to their leader’s exact whereabouts or well-being. In the United States, President George W. Bush transferred power to his deputy Dick Cheney not once but twice: in 2002 then again in 2007 but for no longer than a day. The reason for this was a scheduled surgery which required him to be sedated. The American government did not hide this or any information relating to the President’s capacity to perform his duties. The transfer of power was simple, clear and most of all short. In fact, the media even knew the exact reason behind the transfer of power: a colonoscopy. It was no secret that Bush would be sedated and obviously unable to function while under anaesthesia. Secrecy and intrigues The level of openness one finds in foreign countries when such matters arise is remarkable in its “foreignness” when compared to the secrecy and intrigues which obtain here in Nigeria. An article from the Washington Post (July 2007) even went on to give specific details about President Bush’s general health: “through 6 1/2 years in office, Bush has been exceptionally healthy. He turned 61 this month and exercises religiously six days a week. His blood pressure, pulse and cholesterol were all reported better than average in his most recent annual physical, performed last summer”. After the colonoscopy, it was made clear to all that no “signs of cancer” were found. Would a Nigerian leader behave thus? We believe, due to our superstitious, secretive nature, that revealing details about our health invites “witches” or bad luck, therefore taking ideas from the middle ages into offices and matters of state which belong to this century. The same Washington Post article went on to say (and to quote Bush’s press secretary at the time, Tony Snow): “Doctors found and removed polyps from Bush’s colon before he became president but discovered none in 2002. Age and history would suggest that there’s a reasonable chance that polyps will be noted this time, if so, they’ll be removed and evaluated”. Polyps are growths which in some cases become cancerous. Can one imagine a Nigerian President giving such details about his health, even going so far as to admit that a family history of cancer informed the decision to undergo a medical procedure? Tony Snow, President Bush’s media aide also added: “Tests on any such tissue removed could take 48 to 72 hours”. The article ends by saying: “Snow knows a lot about the subject (of cancer). He had a relapse of colon cancer in March and is undergoing treatment. Shortly after his briefing, he left the White House for his weekly dose of chemotherapy”. Ill-health in the Western world is neither seen as something to be hidden (particularly not when one is elected into office and must maintain citizens’ trust) nor as a weakness. It is merely a fact of life which is dealt with head on and as professionally as possible, in a manner which doesn’t delay or negatively impact one’s duties. However, if and when the illness progresses to a level that isn’t manageable, whereby one is incapacitated or unable to be seen in public, to deliver speeches or to communicate with citizens without an aide acting as a go between, then there are sacrosanct protocols which demand a real and immediate transfer of power. In most developed societies, it would be near impossible for the President to be incapacitated for a prolonged period of time without the transfer of powers becoming total and complete, especially if there was no indication of when, if at all, the President would return. The Yar’Adua scenario, with all its intrigues, couldn’t occur in a society like America. Despite the political divide which might separate politicians or even the media, the interest of the country always comes first. Why shouldn’t this be so in Nigeria? Who are these “cabals”, these “shadow cabinets” who hold Nigerians to ransom? Why, if not for their greed and love of power for its own sake do they believe that Nigerians cannot handle the truth? Nigerians are generally decent people. As they say in local parlance, “ na condition make crayfish bend” . Yet, despite all our travails, we are a people prone to empathy when it comes to illness. The truth, in any situation, if well managed and properly explained, could save this administration from a total loss of confidence, a dangerous possibility. Here is a quote from a Fox News article describing the hours after former US President Bush’s surgery. Standard agents The normalisation of power, the specificity of the narrative, its detail, the way American Presidents are portrayed as human, sometimes fallible, not indestructible or paternalistic, is telling, in comparison to our own would-be larger than life public figures: “during the 31-minute procedure, Bush was sedated with a drug called propofol. The advantage is that it works faster and wears off considerably faster than the standard agents. After the examination, Bush ate breakfast with Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten, White House counsel Fred Fielding and National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley. Bush played with his dogs, Barney and Miss Beazley. He also planned a bike ride around the presidential compound in the Catoctin Mountains of western Maryland. The president was in good humour and will resume his normal activities at Camp David”. When will we see this in Nigeria? Pastors’ salaries IT is highly ironic that the same churches preaching the “prosperity gospel” to their members apparently pay their pastors, themselves graduates, very poorly. The churches are rich (their senior pastors travel in private jets and unimaginable luxury) and oversee numerous vastly profitable businesses (schools, universities, farms etc.) whose profits are undeclared and most often unaccounted for, unlike what obtains abroad. Why such injustice and huge disparities in a church setting? Most religions detest unfairness, yet, the way religion is practised in Nigeria seems to command injustice, to make it acceptable and even profitable for those at the helm of affairs both in and outside government. It is only the poor who sacrifice in Nigeria, never the rich. Just how long do we believe the poor will stand back and watch this state of affairs continue? Goodluck Jonathan THE former President reportedly said that Nigeria risks “destruction” if the government fails to address “religious violence and extremism”. Jonathan has clearly taken a leaf out of Obasanjo’s play-book. Former President Obasanjo has become quite famous for critiquing and commenting on issues which he himself failed to positively impact upon, in a clear case of “too little too late”. When the Boko Haram insurgency was at its height and Jonathan was seen dancing live on national television, or when he and his administration denied that the Chibok girls were taken, did he tackle “religious violence and extremism” then? With what was reported about the diversion of public funds meant to fund the army, the former President might not be in the best position to give any lessons to anyone about insecurity or religious strife. In Nigeria, we need to move on from stating the obvious and towards proffering solutions. Sadly, this requires a different skill set entirely. |

By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA – At a time Nigerians were anxiously waiting for his return to Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the National Assembly informing them of his desire to extend his leave. He did not state the duration of the extension. The letter which was written on Sunday stated that the extension was to enable the president complete and receive the results of a series of tests recommended by his doctors. A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina on Sunday stated that “The President had planned to return to Abuja this evening, but was advised to complete the test cycle before returning.” The statement added that “The notice has since been dispatched to the Senate President, and Speaker, House of Representatives Mr. President expresses his sincere gratitude to Nigerians for their concern, prayers and kind wishes.” source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/buhari-surprises-nigerians-extends-vacation-writes-national-assembly4/ |

Prof. Francis Otunta, the Vice Chancellor (VC), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, in Abia, has confirmed the discovery of a new drug for the treatment and cure of HIV/AIDS. Otunta told newsmen at the university campus on Wednesday that the finding followed years of scientific research by the institution. He said that the breakthrough was made by Prof. Maduike Ezeibe, a researcher in the university. According to him, Ezeibe had presented the drug to the University management, Senate and Council, where he explained the processes he went through to arrive at his finding. Minister of Health, Prof Issac Adewole during his HIV test. The VC also said that Ezeibe had equally presented the drug to his colleagues in the medical field and nobody had contradicted his finding. “Prof. Ezeibe is a researcher in Veterinary Medicine and one may wonder how he discovered a drug to cure a human ailment,” he said. He commended Ezeibe for the breakthrough, saying: “He has brought honour to the University and we are proud of him.” Otunta said that the university was in the process of mass producing the drug for further clinical trials on persons living with HIV/AIDS in the country. Ezeibe, who is a professor of Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Virology, said that the drug was produced with Aluminum Silicate and Magnesium Silicate (Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate). He said that the two minerals “are already in use as medicines for the treatment of various animal and human diseases”. He said that 10 persons living with the disease, “who volunteered’’, were made to apply through their doctor to the VC. “They were treated daily with the Medicinal Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate (50 mg/kg),” he said. Ezeibe said that the volunteers were subjected to monthly tests for viral loads and CD4-lymphocyte counts. “With the antiviral effects of the medicine, its ability to reach all cells (as nanoparticles) and the lymphocytes, there is no more hiding place (sanctuary) for HIV,” he said. He said that the medicine had been used to potentiate Ampicilin, Chloroquine, Piperazine and Sulphadimidin, among others, and could be a major foreign exchange earner for Nigeria, if approved by relevant authorities. According to him, “local and international pharmaceutical companies would find the product as a veritable raw material”. Ezeibe said that he presented the research findings to the World Virology Conference in Atlanta in 2015, and Antonio (Texas) in 2016. Besides, he said that the results of the laboratory tests had been published in many international scientific journals, including the British Journal of Medicine and Medical Research, among several others. He said that he was also about to sign a memorandum of understanding with a U.S.-based Scientific Research Publishing, publishers of World Journal of AIDS, for the publication of his book “How I came about the cure for HIV/AIDS”. Ezeibe, who said that the medicine was patented in August 2014 in Nigeria, called on the Federal Government to help him to secure international patency for the drug. He said: “If commercialised, the Medicinal Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate would become an alternative for petroleum to the Nigerian economy.” source : http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/breakthrough-michael-okpara-varsity-discovers-cure-hivaids/ |

The six abducted students and teachers of the Lagos State Junior and Senior Model College Igbonla in Epe area of Lagos State have been released,The Nigerian Tribune reliably gathered that the hostages were around 10:25 p.m., on Tuesday night released by the abductors The hostages were reportedly on Tuesday night released, after an undisclosed ransom had been paid by the affected families. A senior police source, who pleaded anonymity, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, confirmed the release of the students and teachers but denied being aware of any ransom payment. Relatives of one of the abducted hostages, who was reported sick, reportedly had an agreement with the abductors to release the hostages. The release of the hostages was before the expiration of the reported deadline given by the abductors, who had threatened to kill them, if their families failed to pay the ransom before 48 hours . Efforts to get the reaction of the image maker in charge of the state police command, Dolapo Badmos, failed as her mobile phone number was not accessible.
