Repeated use of paracetamol, commonly
referred to ‘panadol’ can lead to kidney disease
says Dr. Aliyu Dahiru Waziri at the department
of Hematology, Ahmadu Bello University
Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria.
In a lecture titled ‘Managing Sickle Cell Crises’, on
Friday, the doctor said research has shown that
consistent consumption of paracetamol can affect
the function of the kidney.
The lecture, according to Daily Trust was organised
by the Safiyya Sickle Cell Foundation, a non-
governmental organisation a$$ists people living
with sickle cell anaemia.
The lecture took place at the ABU main campus in
Samaru.
Daily Trust quotes the doctor saying: “I think that is
why we are experiencing frequent kidney cases in
Nigeria. I want to advise Nigerians to avoid the habit
of frequent intake of panadol to avoid the chances
of being infected by kidney disease.
“Some factors that predispose to sickle cell crises
include;dehydration, infection, extreme
temperature, stress, pregnancy, high altitude and
extreme physical exercise.”
Foundation leader, Mrs. Ronke Daudu, added during
the lecture that the objectives of the foundation
were eliminating sickle cells anaemia, stopping
stigmatisation of patients and rendering a$$istance
to the victims.
Meanwhile a new study has also discovered that
painkillers could have a harmful effect on fertility,
and women who have plans of having babies are
advised to use with caution.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday evening finally
moved into his official residence in the Presidential Villa,
Abuja.
Buhari and the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo have lived
outside the Villa and used the Defence House, Abuja as
their offices since their inauguration three weeks ago in
order to allow renovation works to be carried out at the
facility.
The President’s wife, Aisha Buhari had moved into the
official residence since last Thursday.
Buhari, who returned to Abuja from Katsina State on
Saturday, began the movement of his properties to the seat
of power on Sunday evening.

Another person has been felled in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun
state as the bloody clashes between two cult
groups, Aiye and Eiye worsened.
The new victim, identified as Olokobi, a.k.a Baba
Yusuf, was shot by some boys riding on an auto-
bike Saturday night on Folagbade Road, the main
commercial road in the town. He was attacked at
about 7:30pm, just as he alighted from a car.
“This is very pathetic. Baba Yusuf was a very gentle
person. He is a logwood driver and an easy going
person. Some young boys on bikes were said to have
shot him,” said a woman who knew the deceased.
“What could have caused it,I don’t know but the only
thing I know is that he was never a member of any
cult group. This is still a shock to me”
No fewer than 10 persons have been killed in the
town in recent days, as cult groups, Aiye and Eiye
continued their violence.
The State Police command had in last week arrested
over 30 people and they have since been taken to
court.
The deceased was survived by a wife and three
children.
