Sitting on the pavement outside an NGO's office in the Moroccan capital of Rabat, 18-year-old Juliet (not her real name) stared at the cars speeding past.

Juliet had a look of despair and hopelessness on her face. Her hair was tangled, jeans torn and stained and her toenails broken. The blank expression, sans any movement of the head to look the other way, had a story of gloom and unhappiness.

Juliet has not spoken to her family in Nigeria since December. She gave a reason for that, a terrible one.

"My father sold me as a sex slave last year," she mumbled as her eyes welled up before she turned her face away.

"I wanted to leave home and go to Europe. I was talking to a man who said he will help me get there. Next thing I know, he tells me my father sold me to him. He then raped and abused me many times before a woman turned up one day and told me I was being taken to Morocco."

Juliet is one of the thousands of sub-Saharan migrants lured to Morocco by its proximity to Europe - Spain's southern tip is just 14km from Morocco's northern coast - as well as the North African country's policy on immigration and asylum.

From January to June this year, more than 18,000 migrants reached Spain by land or sea route, according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). Almost 10 percent of those arrivals were women.

A bigger number, however, still resides in Morocco, hoping to save up enough money to pay the traffickers for a spot on a boat that will take them across the Mediterranean.

Majority of these female migrants come from Nigeria and Cameroon, according to a report which adds that some are also from Mali, Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Many of those are living a life they did not imagine when they left home on a risky and perilous journey towards Europe. The journey to Morocco, which a majority see as a country of transit, was full of violence and abuse.

"Women suffer more than men. When they cross over 6,000km, imagine every single border they have to cross," said Mohamed Khachani, president of the Moroccan Association for Studies and Research on Migration.

His research revealed that one-third of the female migrants residing in Morocco were abused on their way there.

"They suffer countless violations of numerous types."

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said most female migrants in Morocco travelled to the North African country without family members.

It adds that more than half of them are single mothers, the majority of them became pregnant on their way to Morocco.

Avva is a 35-year-old Senegalese, flashing posters of African hairstyles outside a Casablanca market.

She worked as a hairdresser in Senegal but her dream of working in Europe saw her apply twice, though unsuccessfully, for a Spanish visa. That is when she decided to fly into Morocco and try her luck via people smugglers.

"The only option is the Mediterranean now," said Avva as she looked around for customers. "I just need to save up enough money to pay a trafficker. I've already tried once but was arrested even before I could get on the boat."

"Thankfully, I have not been raped or harassed but I have been lucky. A lot of women I know suffered not only on their journey to Morocco but also here."

According to Juliet, many female migrants are also lured into prostitution as they seek any source of income they could find to fund their next journey.

Most of them, she added, were young girls who had run away from home in search of a better life.

"Our group comprised seven girls in Casablanca. They are aged between 17 and 22. They were all sold as sex slaves in Nigeria," said Juliet.

"We all wanted to go to Europe but now we're stuck here. Sometimes, these girls sell things at traffic lights and men come there and take them home for sex."

In order to improve conditions for the migrants, Morocco launched a migrant regularisation programme in 2013 through which it granted residency permits to more than 50,000 people.

The move was designed to change Morocco's image from that of a transit country to a host nation, hoping to stop them from going to Spain.

Authorities said the residency permit allows access to jobs, healthcare, training and education. But that programme, and the permit, do not guarantee a job, leaving thousands of migrants still clinging on to hopes of reaching Europe.

'Terrible' treatment

According to Said Tbel, of the Moroccan Human Rights Association, the migrant situation in the country is "terrible".

"We see so many migrants, even those with residency permits, arrested and forced to the south. They have no rights of movement, they are not getting the promised healthcare," said Tbel. "Morocco is using these migrants as a pressure card in negotiations with the European Union."

Despite all the issues, some female migrants have benefitted from their journey to Morocco, ensuring they not only live a better life but also make enough money to make the journey worth it.

Karima, for example, is a 25-year-old from Ivory Coast. She has been in Morocco for two years and is a hairdresser. In the summer, she said she earns around 500 dirhams ($53) a day, enough money to "support my family and guarantee a good life in Morocco".

Karima came with the dream of crossing into Spain, but a friend's death in the Mediterranean earlier this year forced her to put that idea to rest.

For others, despite the risk and uncertainty, Spain is the only option. After having endured so much on the way to Europe, they do not want to give up being "so close".

"I couldn't take that life at home anymore that's why I wanted to run away," mumbled Juliet, tears rolling down her cheeks.

"I have no money. I have no food. I'm begging on the streets, just about managing to eat once a day. I just want to have a better life and that's something I won't find here in Morocco."

Sunday Adefonou Anani, 22, a Togolese cook to late Opeyemi Badamosi, Chairman of Credit Switch Technology, who allegedly killed his boss is dead.

Anani, who was remanded in prison custody by an Igbosere Magistrates’Court in Lagos, on November 12 until his next arraignment in December 18 to be precise was found dead by prison wardens according to his councel. However, the full details leading to his dead remains scanty.

Anani, who was facing a one count of murder until his demise. The charge which read "in order to rob, stabbed the deceased to death with a kitchen knife. The offence committed is contrary to section 222 and Punishable Under section 223 of the Criminal laws of Lagos State 2015, was remanded in prison custody after police Prosecutor, Mr J.I Eboseremene, prayed to the court he be remanded in prison custody. He said,

"We pray the court that the defendant should be remanded in prison custody, for the first instance of 30 days.”

Escape planning tips

Pull together everyone in your household and make a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Also, mark the location of each smoke alarm.

A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code® requires interconnected smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.

When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.

Choose an outside meeting place (i.e. neighbor's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.

Go outside to see if your street number is clearly visible from the road. If not, paint it on the curb or install house numbers to ensure that responding emergency personnel can find your home.

Have everyone memorize the emergency phone number of the fire department. That way any member of the household can call from a neighbor's home or a cellular phone once safely outside.

If there are infants, older adults, or family members with mobility limitations, make sure that someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in the event of an emergency. Assign a backup person too, in case the designee is not home during the emergency

If windows or doors in your home have security bars, make sure that the bars have emergency release devices inside so that they can be opened immediately in an emergency. Emergency release devices won't compromise your security - but they will increase your chances of safely escaping a home fire.

Tell guests or visitors to your home about your family's fire escape plan. When staying overnight at other people's homes, ask about their escape plan. If they don't have a plan in place, offer to help them make one. This is especially important when children are permitted to attend "sleepovers" at friends' homes.

Be fully prepared for a real fire: when a smoke alarm sounds, get out immediately. Residents of high-rise and apartment buildings may be safer "defending in place."

Once you're out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.

Put your plan to the test

Practice your home fire escape plan twice a year, making the drill as realistic as possible.

Make arrangements in your plan for anyone in your home who has a disability.

Allow children to master fire escape planning and practice before holding a fire drill at night when they are sleeping. The objective is to practice, not to frighten, so telling children there will be a drill before they go to bed can be as effective as a surprise drill.

It's important to determine during the drill whether children and others can readily waken to the sound of the smoke alarm. If they fail to awaken, make sure that someone is assigned to wake them up as part of the drill and in a real emergency situation.

If your home has two floors, every family member (including children) must be able to escape from the second floor rooms. Escape ladders can be placed in or near windows to provide an additional escape route. Review the manufacturer's instructions carefully so you'll be able to use a safety ladder in an emergency. Practice setting up the ladder from a first floor window to make sure you can do it correctly and quickly. Children should only practice with a grown-up, and only from a first-story window. Store the ladder near the window, in an easily accessible location. You don't want to have to search for it during a fire.

Always choose the escape route that is safest – the one with the least amount of smoke and heat – but be prepared to escape under toxic smoke if necessary. When you do your fire drill, everyone in the family should practice getting low and going under the smoke to your exit.

Closing doors on your way out slows the spread of fire, giving you more time to safely escape.

In some cases, smoke or fire may prevent you from exiting your home or apartment building. To prepare for an emergency like this, practice "sealing yourself in for safety" as part of your home fire escape plan. Close all doors between you and the fire. Use duct tape or towels to seal the door cracks and cover air vents to keep smoke from coming in. If possible, open your windows at the top and bottom so fresh air can get in. Call the fire department to report your exact location. Wave a flashlight or light-colored cloth at the window to let the fire department know where you are located.

13-year-old Sandra parks, who became popular after she came third in the 2016-17 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Writing contest, against gun violence is dead.

Sandra, died from loss of blood after she was hit by a stray bullet in her home in North 13th street.

In a police report written by Bernice Parks, Sandra's mum, Bernice said, that she had gone to bed earlier leaving her children who stayed awake to watch television but she was awoken around 7:45pm by the sound of a gun shot, which was followed by her daughter's yelling.

“I was awoken by the sound of gunfire, the next thing i heard was [Sandra] yelling ‘I’m shot! I’m shot! then i went to the living room, where i found her lying on the floor bleeding.”

“My sister took it like a soldier: She just walked in and said, ‘Mama, I’m shot,’ ” Ingram recalled. “She was only hit one time, in her chest. The bullet wasn’t even for her," said Tatiana Ingram, Sandra's sister.

However, two men Isaac D. Barnes, 26, Untrell Oden, 27, both ex armed robbery convicts have been arrested and charged with first-degree reckless homicide, among other counts and two counts of possession of a firearm respectively.

According to Barnes’ ex-girlfriend, upon interrogation by detectives alleged that Barnes approached her vehicle where she parked outside her sister's home earlier that day "wearing a mask and holding a large AK-47 style firearm.”

Further more the second suspect, Oden, who was found in the same residence where Barnes was hiding in a closet alleged that he saw Barnes “shooting at an unknown target as they walked from the store.” he further said that Barnes had “approached him about keeping his guns” at his home. he admitted that he had handled both of the guns in the past.

A South Sudanese 17-year-old girl, has allegedly been "trafficked" out for five hundred cows, two luxury cars, $10,000, two bikes, a boat and a few cell phones to the highest bidder, with the state’s deputy governor, as one of the top bidders.

The highest bidder was a man with eight wives, and three times older than the 17-year-old girl.

A human rights lawyer, Philips Anyang Ngong, who tried to stop the bidding on Facebook where the auction was discussed said, “this is the biggest test of child abuse, trafficking and auctioning of a human being.” “She has been reduced to a mere commodity and everyone involved should be held accountable."

Dr. Mary Otieno, Described the act as illegal and a threat to girls' lives adding that South Sudan has a long history of child marriage. Even though that practice is now illegal, 40 percent of girls still marry before age 18, according to the United Nations Population Fund. The practice “threatens girls’ lives” and limits prospects for their future.

Condemning Facebook for its alleged failure to take down the post, the country’s director for Plan International, George Otim, said, “This barbaric use of technology is reminiscent of latter-day slave markets. That a girl could be sold for marriage on the world’s biggest social networking site in this day and age is beyond belief."

John Mading, South Sudan’s anti-human trafficking chief described the act as a crystal clear case of human trafficking.
“It is clear that some human trafficking practices are hidden in our culture,” adding that most girls are forced or tricked into marriage after being told they are going to live with relatives and go to school.

Furthermore, the National Alliance for Women Lawyers in South Sudan urged the government, local lawmakers and activists to comply with the plan to end child marriage by 2030.

However, this is the largest dowry ever paid in the civil war-torn country.

A Mexican billionaire drug lord, Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, Aka "El Chapo", 61, who was one of the worlds most wanted fugitives until his arrest, 2016, and extradition to the U.S, 2017, by the Mexican government, after twice escaping prison 2001 and 2015 respectively has been arraigned again, before the Brooklyn federal court, after he pleaded not guilty to over a dozen of charges earlier. He is charged with 17 criminal counts, and may face life in prison if convicted.

An alleged partner in running the Sinaloa Cartel which was founded in 1989, Jesus Zambada, brother of Ismael aka "El Mayo", who was arrested in 2008 and extradited to the United States in 2012, has testified against the drug lord.

A Limpopo bag thief has been confirmed dead at the scene, in the parking lot of a Polokwane mall, after he was given a hot chase and shot by the bag owner on Monday at about 09:00.

The thief was left to fate by his assistant after he was shot as a silver Toyota Corolla, he was about to enter sped off immediately he fell to the ground.

In the video footage, the 58-year-old man, was seen narrating his previous experience in the hands of robbers.

"Last year they took it," he said. "Now this year, once more."

"They know me."

"The same thing happened on September 6 last year. My bag went away...I cried like a baby. I said to myself, last year I didn't have bullets, so I had to go and buy bullets last year."

Sequel to the report of a 300 Level student of the Department of Mass Communication, Olozino Ogege, who was declared missing last Thursday, and her decomposing body found on Friday with her tongue and breasts severed from her body, a security personel attached to the school (DELSU) has been arrested by the police after the deceased tracked phone was found in his custody.

Further more, the confession of the security personel, has led to the to the arrest of two persons with a third suspect still on the run.

Late Olozino Ogege, was declared missing last Thursday after she reportedly went meet an agent, who was assisting her secure an apartment in the university town.

A suspected rapist, Isaac Evaghoghme, 31, has confessed upon interrogation by the Cross River State Police Command to have allegedly broken into the resident of a 7-year-old girl at No.27, Queen Duke Street, and forcefully had carnal knowledge of the underaged girl, while her parents were away, to watch the second Carnival Calabar dry run.

Briefing us, the prosecuting counsel and Programmes Manager of an NGO Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, Ikpi Kebe said, the little girl sustained severe injuries from the incident, but had earlier been treated until recovery by a nice neighbour.

“In that incident, the girl sustained severe injuries and was treated by a neighbour, Maman Fauziya, until she recovered” Ikpi said.

Narrating how the incident happened, Ikpi said, on that day the mother of the victim had taken her along to watch the second Carnival Calabar dry run but along the line, the little girl felt hungry. Not being aware of any danger, she was permitted by her mom to go and eat since the home was close by but unfortunately, she was raped and hot water poured on her by, Evaghoghme, who was said to have traced her home and broken in, just to carry out his fantasy.

“the girl along with her mother had gone to watch the second Carnival Calabar dry run after a while, the little girl complained that she was hungry and wanted to go back home and eat. It was while she was at home that, Isaac Evaghoghme, broke into the girl’s parents’'

“He also poured some hot water on the girl and escaped when the girl started screaming for help”

However, Evaghoghme, was caught the following day after his escape by youths in the area, and handed over to Anti-Kidnapping and Cultism operatives at a police post near SPA Shopping Mall.

Further into the case, the Cross River State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Miss Irene Ugbo, when contacted confirmed the report adding that the Command had recorded two cases of rape within the same week.

A Sydney man, 47, will appear at Goulburn Local court on Tuesday January 15, 2019, for money laundering.

The man who was believed, to be travelling northbound on the Hume Highway at Sutton Forest was arrested by the Detectives, from the Organised Crime Squad’s Money Laundering Unit who were investigating the 'cash run' between Sydney and Melbourne after a whooping sum of $1 Million in cash, mobile phones and methylamphetamine were allegedly found in the trunk of his car.

According to the police, after a normal roadside drug test, the driver read positive to methylamphetamine (a prohibited drug). Furthermore, following the result of the drug test, the officers were spurred to search the car, the car was searched and a sports bag consisting of several mobile phones, methylamphetamine and $1 million in cash was found in trunk of his car.

However, the 38-year-old passenger, was not left out as he was charged with possession of a prohibited drug, and recklessly dealing in the proceeds of crime.

Mr Nathan Meissen, 28, has admitted today before a Supreme Court to violently murdering his own father, Mark Missen, a Victorian man and a Mooroopna resident, before hiding his dead body in a cupboard and dumping it in an abandoned mineshaft, 50 kilometres far away from the crime scene at a Balaclava Hill mine.

Narrating how he killed his father, Nathan said, "After an argument, i bashed him, as he lay gasping for air i told him to stop making noises i then stomped on his head, and tied a belt around his neck," adding that after the muder, he and his girlfriend raided the victim’s home and sold his belongings on Gumtree.

Speaking with the deceased family members, who felt betrayed by Nathan's act, described Mr Missen, as a brilliant engineer, as well as a loving brother and uncle.

However, Nathan, who did not show any sign of remorse was said to be suffering from mental impairment by his lawyer, adding that both father and son had a very trying relationship.

Central African Republic (CAR)

Mr Alfred Yekatom aka "Rambo" who allegedly led a Christian militia (Anti-Balaka) which formed after Muslim rebels seized power in 2013, has been extradited by the Central African Republic (CAR) and charged before the International Criminal Court in the Hague, Netherlands.

Yekatom, an alleged war crimes suspect was arrested last month after he fired a gun in parliament, then ran away, after a row with a fellow MP and "for his alleged criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in western CAR between December 2013 and August 2014."

Speaking during the event opening ceremony, Interpol’s senior vice president, Kim Jong Yang, said that the police around the world are increasingly facing new challenges.

“In the age of unprecedented information exchange, police around the world are increasingly facing new challenges,” adding that Interpol provides a neutral, well-connected platform globally.

“Gathering best practices within an international model, Interpol provides a neutral, well-connected platform. Global connectivity is something Interpol strives for among law-enforcement worldwide.”

Speaking during a press conference, Jurgen Stock, added that crime had become more complex all thanks to the digital age.

“The cyber environment has been adding an element [of] threat to our modern societies, in terms of how it helps terrorists conduct their criminal and terrorist activities."

“We are talking about terrorist threats all over the world where we see terrorist groups being connected," adding that The main purpose of the gathering is to ensure there are no safe havens for criminals.

After a plea bargain, Brian Varela, 20 from Washington, has been sentenced to 34 months imprisonment with claims by the judge that, it was the highest he could rule since Varela, has no prior charge sheets.

Varela, was said to have raped and unlawful disposed the remains of 18-year-old Alyssa Noceda.

In his report, he told the police that he had earlier met Noceda, in a party where she snorted a large quantity of crushed up pills, adding that he was aware that Noceda was overdosing but still went ahead to rape her just "to pass the time," after that, he sent their sex photos to his friends.

He further told the police that, the next day, he noticed Noceda was cold to the touch, but went to work instead of asking for help. When he returned, he put her dead body in a crate and kept her hid away.

However, an autopsy test showed that Noceda had taken a fatal dose of fentanyl and a generic form of Xanax.

After about three years of thorough investigation, FBI special agents have arrested Mr Ali Elmezayen, 44, of Hawthorne, and accused him of killing his two sons with severe autism by driving off a California pier into the Pacific ocean so that he could collect up to $6 million in insurance polices he’d taken out on them.

According to reports, Elmezayen has earlier purchased several accidental death insurance policies worth more than $6 million on himself, his cohabitant and their children, before he allegedly sped off a wharf at the Port of Los Angeles, plunging his 1998 Honda Civic and its occupants consisting of his cohabitant and two sons into the waters to drown, before swimming out of the open driver’s side window.

In an eye witness report " we heard the tires of the car screech loudly and saw the car accelerate before it flew off the edge of the wharf, crashed into the waters and immediately sunk,” adding that Ali Elmezayen was now seen almost immediately, swimming to the safety of a nearby ladder on the side of the pier.

However, his cohabitant, Rabib Diab not being able to swim did her best to stay afloat as she frantically sought help for her children, screaming, “My kids, my kids!” luckily, she was Saved by a nearby fisherman who threw her a flotation device.

Unfortunately, Abdelkarim, 8, and Elhassan, 13, drowned as the were strapped into child seats.

In a press release by the US prosecuting attorney allege that Elhassan spent several years preparing to set his deadly plan in motion.

Based on a recorded phone call, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on Friday, November 16, concluded that Mohammed bin Salman personally ordered the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, at the Saudi consulate in Turkey on October 2, 2018. However, this report has contradicted Saudi's earlier claims of having no hand in the journalist's death, who was allegedly killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul after he had resisted pressure from Riyadh, for him to return home.

Speaking with CNN, a senior US official said the conclusion was based on a recording provided by the Turkish government and other evidence, including American intelligence.

Adding that Khalid bin Salman, the crown prince's brother who is also the Saudi ambassador to the United States, in a phone call had earlier told the late Khashoggi, that he should go to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to pick up documents he needed for his planned marriage to a Turkish woman. It is not clear if Khalid knew Khashoggi would be killed, but he made the call at his brother’s direction, according to the people familiar with the call.

However, Investigators also believe an operation such as the one that ended in Khashoggi's death would not have happened without bin Salman's knowledge given his control of the government.

Both the White House, the State Department and the CIA declined to comment on the report, with claims that it was an intelligence matter.

Nial Healey, 27, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of six counts of rape, and pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Manchester Crown Court.

Nial, was said to have punched a woman in her 40s, who had earlier rejected his advances on the head and chest several times, causing her to fall to the floor, before forcing her into his bedroom and raped her repeatedly for 13 hours, while threatening to “smash her head off every wall” if she screamed for help.

Feeling satisfied with the judgment, the woman said, “I just thought I was never getting out. I hope he now understands how it feels to be locked up, not knowing when you will get home"

However, in an official statement by Detective Constable Kimberley Hames-Evans, of Greater Manchester Police’s serious crime division, commended the judgment adding that it was the best for such cases.

“In this case a life sentence is the only sentence that goes some way to reflecting the amount of harm Healey has caused to the victim and I hope this sets a standard.”

He further, commended the woman’s bravery for coming forward.

In his last words, Ramos thanked the Mexican Consolate for their supports adding that he was grateful to the Texas prisons for their humane treatment.
