Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday welcomed the decision of Barcelona FC of Spain to establish its first football academy in Africa in the state. Mr. Ambode, who spoke at the Lagos House, Alausa, while receiving the senior management staff of the football club, said he was delighted with the development. He said it was in synchrony with his administration’s philosophy for sports development. Mr. Ambode also pledged maximum support of the government in ensuring the successful take-off of the project. He described the development as a historic moment for the state, saying it was indeed a thing of joy coming at a time when the government was still basking in the euphoria of the successful hosting of an international marathon. Mr. Ambode said the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon was a major pointer to how Lagos could actualise its dream of improving the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the state using sports as a major instrument. “This visit by FC Barcelona is coming at a point where I believe strongly that we have nothing else to say than to say we are committed to this partnership because we know it will give us the first FCBEscola in Africa. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/sports/football/198828-fc-barcelona-set-soccer-academy-nigeria.html |

A national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to join hands to build a better country. Mr. Tinubu spoke Saturday while receiving an award as The Sun Newspapers Man of the Year in Lagos. ”We have come to a point where there is no turning back for there is nothing worthy of the sacrifices so recently made to turn back to,” said Mr. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State. “We have reached the juncture at which we must reform our institutions, rid our country of corruption or admit that we have mortgaged away the good future due us. “The infrastructural decay of past decades, the unemployment time bomb, the challenging security situation make a compelling case for us all to join with this government to embrace a new politics that will help build a new country. Mr. Tinubu said he felt honoured to be chosen for the award, adding that the decision to pick him was arrived after a rigorous process. “I am humble enough to know that the Sun could have chosen any one of several figures,” he said. “Their decision would not have been gainsaid. I think particularly of the man at the helm of affairs and who won the election, President Muhammadu Buhari. “Yet, I am mindful enough to realize such awards do not come frequently and that I better grab the good thing given me.” The former Lagos State governor thanked The Sun newspapers for recognizing his “modest efforts’ at transforming the country. “What was accomplished in 2015 was not a singular effort. It was done through the collective love and labour of millions of Nigerians. A handful of them were well known. “Most of them are hardworking anonymous people who together constitute the backbone and great strength of this nation. It was this collective effort that produced the unprecedented electoral victory in 2015. “Therefore, I accept this award on behalf of all the people who contributed to opening a vitally new chapter in the book of our national history. Many sacrificed greatly to achieve this great turn of events. Some practically surrendered their businesses. “Some provided funds. Especially that elderly 90-year old woman, Hajia Fadimatu Mai Talle Tara who donated 1 million Naira, her life savings for the campaign of President Muhammadu Buhari . (May Her Soul Rest in Peace). “Others worked ceaselessly, hour after hour, day after day until the historic job was done. Many hit the campaign trail day and night from Katsina to Lagos. I reserve a special recognition and commendation for the youth across this nation who formed part of the foot soldiers in the struggle for change. It is to these heroes that I dedicate this award.” Mr. Tinubu urged The Sun and other media organizations to employ journalism as a tool for development. “Journalism must become a force for good and a voice against injustice, poverty and discrimination,” he said. “It must always speak right to might. You must be objective. You must not be a partner to power or to those who have lost power. Your role is that of guardian and herald of the truth for the people themselves. “Do that and you will shine in a way that will make the name of this newspaper more than apt. The media will stand the best of time and with other patriots work to make Nigeria great again.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/198779-must-rid-nigeria-corruption-tinubu.html |
By Levinus Nwabughiogu ABUJA-All Progressives Congress, APC, has described as “laughable”, the comment credited to the new national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff that PDP would regain power at the center in 2019 elections. In a statement titled “Sheriff And 2019: If Wishes Were Horses, Beggars Would Ride”,and signed by the national secretary of the party, Mai Mala Buni, APC wondered how a party, it said, ruined the economy would regain power. It submitted that Nigerians cannot abandon APC’s smooth sailing ship for a sinking and rudderless PDP ship, come 2019. The party stated that it was left for the people to evaluate what the present government has so far done with 8 months in office. The statement read thus: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) in reacting to the laughable comments credited to the newly-selected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu Sheriff, is mindful of the 16th century English language proverb and nursery rhyme “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride”. “In monitored media reports, Ali Modu Sheriff boasted in Umuahia, the Abia State capital that the ailing PDP which lost power in 2015 will regain control of the federal government in 2019. “Ali Modu Sheriff was also quoted saying the PDP would soon come out with its “master plan” to regain power. “The APC is reluctant to join issues with Ali Modu Sheriff’s idle 2019 postulations and would rather join issues that will bring about all-inclusive development in the country. “However, the APC and indeed Nigerians seriously hope the touted “master plan” includes how the PDP and its cronies will return public funds stolen under the PDP’s watch for 16 years. “Nigerians are aware that the current economic hardship and institutional rot was caused by the PDP’s 16-year misrule and pillage. “President Muhammadu Buhari has been working assiduously to correct the PDP’s years of damage and bring about people-centric governance. It is baffling how the PDP expects Nigerians to abandon APC’s smooth sailing ship for a sinking and rudderless PDP ship, come 2019. “The 2015 elections has been won and lost. The priority of the present APC administration is to deliver on election promises made by the party to Nigerians who long-desired change of political leadership at the federal level and in many states. “Happily, Nigerians can look back, with relief and attest that since the APC-led administration took over governance, Nigeria is back on the right track – economically and security-wise – and has taken its right of place among the comity of progressive nations. “The widely-acclaimed job creation, social welfare and inclusion programmes proposed by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has been well received. “The full implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) by the present administration has greatly plugged revenue leakages. The presidential directive to the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to adjust its pricing template to reflect competitive and market driven components has resulted in a more efficient and realistic pricing system for petroleum products and also brought about constant availability of fuel nationwide. “Nigeria is winning the war against insurgency. “In spite of desperate attempts to discredit ongoing anti-corruption efforts, the war against graft is being won. “In reiterating the recent submission of the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, for the first time in many years, Nigeria now has a solidly positive international image and the president is trying to cash in on this image to help rescue our nation from the throes, the economic morass which the PDP 16-year misrule has plunged Nigeria. “These are clear indicators showing that the APC and the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is on the right track to delivering on its Change Agenda. With the support and prayers of Nigerians, the APC assures that Nigeria will reach its full potential under our leadership.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/2019-sheriffs-comment-laughable-apc/ |

Nigeria was becoming a “pariah state” under former President Goodluck Jonathan, and President Muhammadu Buhari’s frequent foreign trips seek to reverse that status and drive investment, Information Minister Lai Mohammed has said. Nigerian ministers on Wednesday reviewed President Buhari’s recent foreign trips, and defended the president against criticisms that the trips had become too frequent and frivolous and of no value to a nation facing multiple crises. Mr. Mohammed, and the Minister for Environment, Amina Mohammed, who spoke to journalists after the Federal Executive Council meeting, said the trips were meant to attract investments to Nigeria. “You do not run a country by being isolated and the personal presence of the president in many of these fora is very important because before now we were almost a pariah state and the two things that have been driving investments away from this country are terrorism and corruption,” Mr. Mohammed said. “One thing that nobody can fault this president on is his determination to fight these two ills. Mr President’s presence in these fora is very crucial even to the economy back at home. “Before now the level of corruption was very high that nobody was ready to risk his investment in Nigeria. The cost of doing business was so high that most international businessmen didn’t want to come here. Who is coming to invest in a country where there is insecurity? Mr. Buhari has lately been criticised for his frequent foreign trips at a time the nation faces severe economic troubles. Since assuming office in May 2015, he had made at least 19 trips to 14 countries. The environment minister, Ms. Mohammed, said that “investments” secured by Mr. Buhari justified the trips. “We hope to see the president going out and advocating for this country to get more investment so that we can take everyone out of poverty. That is really what is important. We see it as an investment with a return worthwhile,” she said. She said the country will get back on track once the 2016 budget is passed by the National Assembly. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/198615-buharis-frequent-foreign-trips-reverse-nigerias-pariah-status-jonathan-lai-mohammed.html |

The Tin-Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a 40 ft. container with 980 rounds of 9mm type live ammunition and a pistol imported into the country from the U.S. The spokesman of the command, Chris Osunkwo, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos. According to the statement, the area controller of the command, Bashar Yusuf, said the seizure, including camouflage military face cap, camouflage belt, a pair of hand gloves and a pair of shoes, were concealed along with other personal effects in two vehicles. Mr. Yusuf said the arms and ammunition and a suspect who was arrested in connection with the seizure, had been handed over to the State Security Service, SSS, for further investigation. “A 40 ft container with number CLHU452754/2 with these items has been seized and it is with us and we are transferring them as appropriate to the relevant agency. “The items were concealed because nobody can just import these things without full authorisation to do that. “No unauthorised passenger or trader should trade in arms and ammunition all over the world. It is not allowed. “You have to go through due process; authorization with permit, before you move even one piece across the border of another country. “The suspect is with the Directorate of State Security Service for further investigation so that we will get the full details of how he came about these items as well as if there are collaborators within Nigeria or outside Nigeria. “It is within their purview to do that,” the controller said. The officer-in-charge of SSS at Tin Can Island Port, James Udo, explained the danger such importation could have on members of the public, if it had escaped customs’ attention. Mr. Udo said security must be a collective responsibility. He said the SSS would conduct further investigation on the importation to unravel those behind it. Meanwhile, the command said it generated N24.8 billion as revenue in January 2016 compared to N20.9 billion collected in the corresponding period of last year. The controller attributed the increase to improved transparency, compliance from clearing agents as well as a robust electronic system. As the opposition Peoples Democratic Party gets set to name a new leader of the party, governors and other chieftains of the PDP are on a manhunt for a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu, in their bid to make him chairman. PREMIUM TIMES gathered that a meeting of the national caucus of the PDP is currently holding in Abuja, after which the National Executive Committee would meet at the Wadata Plaza secretariat of the party by 2p.m. on Tuesday. Mr. Ribadu was tipped for the chairmanship position last year, shortly after the then chairman, Ahmadu Muazu, resigned from office. However, we gathered that the move, championed by governors elected under the party, was thwarted by the National Working Committee, NWC, under the interim leadership of Uche Secondus. We also gathered that Mr. Ribadu who had earlier agreed to take the offer also abandoned it on account of “lack of seriousness to truly reform the party by its top echelon”. However, after a long back and forth and controversy, including court cases, the party agreed to hold a special NEC meeting to fill the position created by the resignation of Mr. Muazu. PREMIUM TIMES learnt of spirited attempts over the last few days by some top party chieftains to persuade Mr. Ribadu to accept to chair and transform the party. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/198511-exclusive-ribadu-goes-hiding-pdp-governors-move-appoint-party-chair.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |
