Some investments in the homeland can be market-orientated too. For
example, westernized Ibo migrants from Nigeria are considered to be good
businessmen, as their tradition and religion are thought to be more adaptable
than those of the Yoruba and the Hausa. The Ibo are said to be competitive,
hard-working, innovative, materialistic and individualist. They respect effort,
do not delay what can be finished on the same day, devote much attention
to the education of their children, and save money for that purpose. Surveys
show that they take pride in being self-made men, and distrust social parasites
who depend on clan solidarity for their livelihoods. 56 Moreover, Ibo migrants
are prone to invest in their homeland since the Biafra war. They see this region
as a last resort in case of problem. Iboland provided the only safe haven for
returnees who were expelled from Northern Nigeria by the Muslims during
the 1966 pogroms, and for those landlords whose properties were confiscated
in cities like Port Harcourt after the Biafrans lost the war in 1970.

In the same way, Ibo migrants from Nigeria
keep a strong attachment to the land of their ancestors; consequently, almost
83% of those living in Cameroon remit money home once or twice a year

Recipients of remittances in Nigeria are located predominantly in the southeast and
southwest regions. There seems to be a link between regions and ethnic groups with
senders in sending countries. For example, the Ibo from the southeast and the Yoruba from
the southwest constitute the ethnic groups that migrated heavily to the UK.

Nigerian Diaspora Community
Approximately 90,000 Nigerians live in the UK. Over several decades of migration, they have
established a significant migrant community and regularly send remittances home.13 The
majority of those recorded live in Greater London and, of these, half live in inner London
(Shah 2005). Research indicates that this figure may be higher and does not include the
undocumented and UK citizens of Nigerian descent. Nigerian remittance senders include
those who are UK citizens, those who have a “right of abode” or permanent residence, those
who are in the UK on a temporary status such as a student or work visa, those who have illegal
status because their visas are expired, and those who are undocumented (Box 1).
Ethnic, religious, and regional differences existing in the Nigerian community in the
UK make this a very diverse group. Of the over 250 distinct ethnic groups who make up
Nigeria, two of the major groups—the Ibos from the Southeast and the Yoruba from the
Southwest—constitute a significant number of the migrant population (EIU 2005). Other
ethnic communities include the Edo and the Ogoni.

A study of Southeastern Nigeria
conducted by Nwajiuba (2005) reported that although
most respondents declined to reveal specific amounts,
all agreed that foreign remittances were an important
means of meeting family needs. He estimated that
about 20 to 65 percent of family needs were met
through foreign remittances. This is definitely a
significant contribution to Nigeria’s economy

The Igbo Diaspora is a community of Igbo people
outside the country. In the majority, they generously
support their families and relatives in Nigeria with
recurrent transfers. The available evidence indicates
that the Igbos of Southeast Nigeria (and indeed most
Nigerians) overseas have strong links with each other
and with their communities of origin (Nwajiuba,
2005; Osili, 2007). The survey found that the
majority of Igbos in Diaspora maintained contact
with their relatives and had returned to Nigeria to
visit families and friends within the last one year of
the survey. It has also been observed that most Igbo
migrants send foreign remittances on a fairly regular
basis. The findings from the household consumer
survey in Southeast Nigeria show that that 75% of the
respondents receive foreign remittances.

In some Igbo households in southeastern Nigeria,
foreign remittances constitute a significant source of
income. With a population estimated at 30 million,
it is projected that one-fifth of the Igbos of
southeastern Nigeria live outside the country.
