My research focus is on international telecommunications policy with specific interest in Nigeria and other nations of Africa. That work has involved estimating critical mass of service, regulatory issues, and issues of market liberalization. I have published peer-reviewed communication policy articles in professional journals including Telecommunication Policy, Info, Howard Journal of Communication, Africa Media Review, and in books and book chapters on the subject. Additionally, I served as vice president for Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Abuja-Nigeria, which produces several of the country’s telecommunications practitioners.

Dr. Chibugo Okoli (nee Onwumechili) has become the first African medical professional to be appointed to the most powerful dual position as Medical Director and Director of Public Health in the United Kingdom. UGO, as she is known to her friends and peers, became a Consultant in Public Health in the UK only a few years ago, after passing all the medical exams required of all specialist doctors. Within a record time she was sky-rocketed to this extremely powerful new position with a six figure salary in May this year, after beating several competitors and rivals to the coveted post and therefore proving herself worthy of the position to her peers who are mainly European.

Her new job puts her in a position to employ and supervise Consultants and various medical Specialists from her office base at Enfield Primary Care Trust in north London. Naturally, she is also in control of millions of dosh in her departmental budget.

Friends of Ugo will tell you that they are not in the least surprised about her astronomical achievement because she is extremely hardworking and comes from a crop of academia. Her father is Professor Cyril Agodi Onwumechili, the first Nigerian nuclear physicist and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ife, Ile-Ife renamed Obafemi Awolowo University, and also former President of Anambra State University of Science and Technology, Enugu, Nigeria. Her brother Professor Chuka Onwumechili is Head of Department of Communications at Bowie State University wrong info: he is at Howard University, Washington DC, and another brother is a Barrister-at-law. Her mother Mrs C B Onwumechili is a retired senior civil servant and a lecturer. Dr Ugo is blessed with three boys and one girl and married to a well-known journalist turned businessman, Sir Joe Enukora Okoli, who runs a business empire in the UK and recently was a finalist for the Lifetime Achievement in Business Award established by Black Enterprise Award UK.

Dr Ugo Okoli entered the University of Nigeria Nsukka at a young age of 15, and graduated in medicine 6 years later at the age of 21. She worked at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and at the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt before joining her husband in the UK. She is blessed with three sons and one daughter. She is a very quiet and unassuming individual. You could hardly tell that she wields so much influence and authority when you meet her because of her mild mannered personality.

Dr Okoli's remarkable and enviable achievement is a good example of how Africans are making the difference in Europe and America, breaking down barriers of prejudice and discrimination through personal effort and sheer tenacity of purpose. Her success story is yet another confirmation that we Africans living in Europe and America are not all drug pushers, or 419 scammers. We have first class brains like Dr Ugo Okoli and we are helping the western world today to maintain a high standard of healthcare. Ironically, we need people like Dr Ugo Okoli back home to plan our healthcare services to compete with the Western world but experience has shown that people like her can be easily frustrated because she belongs to the crop of accomplished professionals who would not take bribes or bend the rules in order to suit any individual in a position of power. The sad fact about corruption is exactly the reason why Africa has lagged behind in development whilst her best brains are forced into academic exile, such as people like Dr Ugo Okoli.

Dr. Eni Njoku is a senior research scientist and supervisor of the Water and Carbon Cycles group. His research interests focus on applications of spaceborne microwave sensing to studies of land surface hydrology and the global water cycle. There are several levels of highest level. JAMB data shows Igbos leading by far in the first of the highest levels (AKA Bachelor/HND). But there is no data for MSc and PhD levels. Stop claiming crap. Most of the students you see in Nigerian universities in the SE, SW, SS and N are Igbos.

The Convener of the Coalition of Northern Politicians, Academics, Professionals and Businessmen, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has dismissed the sentiments shared by a former Governor of Anambra State that the Igbo have not been treated fairly in the governance of Nigeria.

Ezeife had argued that President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment of Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, who hails from the Igbo-speaking part of Delta State, to head the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, was not enough to satisfy the South-East.

But in an interview with our correspondent on Friday, Mohammed criticised Ezeife, insisting that people of the Igbo nation have enjoyed favourable treatment.

He added it was wrong to reward the Igbo simply on the basis of the Nigerian Civil War, which lasted between 1967 and 1970.

Mohammed said, “If it is about Buhari making the appointments based on merit, I have no problems with it. I don’t believe Buhari or Nigeria owes any Igbo anything. I don’t care what Ezeife says; if they had seceded, there would have been no Nigeria today. As people who acted outside the interest of Nigeria as a country, to expect compensation is a very odd logic.

“If the Igbo don’t like it, they can attempt secession again. If they do, they must be prepared to live with the consequences. Nobody owes them anything and nobody is out to compensate them for anything.”

The doctor-turned-politician also condemned claims that Buhari’s appointment of northerners into key positions in government was done out of ethnic sentiment.

He said, “They (critics) should tell us which ethnic groups have been favoured by Buhari in the course of making his appointments in parastatals and agencies. Those who are making those allegations, particularly the Igbo, have not told us exactly which parastatals.

“For example, an Igbo man has just been appointed as the head of the NNPC, one of the most important government agencies in Nigeria. And over 50 per cent of those appointed before him were also Igbos. So, if people decide to be mischievous, there is nothing anybody can do about it. As far as I am concerned, those appointed have been good and credible persons.”

On reports that Buhari may head the petroleum ministry for the next 18 months, the northern leader stated that there was no living Nigerian at that public level who knew as much about the ministry as Buhari.

According to Mohammed, there is full justification for Buhari to be petroleum minister for as long as he desires.

He added, “Moreover, the consequences of what happens in the oil ministry are so dire. When one looks at the track record of the past minister, one can see what we have to deal with as a country as a result of her being made a minister.

“In fact, I encourage him to retain the defence ministry because we are in a state of war and he is a distinguished retired general who has headed every single division of the Nigerian Army during his service. If he decides to be the defence minister, I would be more than glad.”

Oftentimes, the Lagos governor uses it like a medieval marauder would, a tomahawk. But Governor Ambode is not a marauder neither is he a Viking, yet

Governor Ambode shouldn’t have removed Fashola’s name from the roll call of Lagos governors. Although watched and listened in horror as Fashola denigrated and dishonoured his estranged benefactor and political godfather, Bola Tinubu, to whom Ambode also owes allegiance, it is not enough reason for Governor Ambode to pay Fashola back in similar manner. Sources within the State House bemoan Ambode’s seeming desperation to witch-hunt and destroy his predecessor, stressing that it could lead to the incumbent governor’s destruction in the long run.

The Capital investigations revealed that Fashola’s removal from the roll call of ex-Lagos governors was triggered by the ongoing beef and silent war between him and his successor. Fashola, it would be recalled deliberately denied his predecessor and godfather, Tinubu, due honour as he gave his valedictory speech. It was the final straw in a catalogue of intrigues and onslaughts against Tinubu by Fashola. What the former Lagos governor didn’t foresee however, was his imminent humiliation by his incoming successor. Since Governor Ambode assumed office as Lagos governor, the media has been awash with revelations of his predecessor, Fashola’s outrageous misconduct and abuse of official powers.
