Pink Lake is a salt lake in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. The lake is not always pink but the distinctive colour of the water changes as a result of green alga, and/or high concentration of brine prawn. Once the lake water reaches a salinity level greater than that of sea water, the temperature is high enough and adequate light conditions are provided, the alga begins to accumulate the red pigment beta carotene.

We are often flooded with information about the devastation that occurred during the battle of Normandy, for example, but very few of us have ever heard about the mass suicides that occurred in many towns and villages across Germany directly after the war ended.

One mass suicide occurred in the German town of Demmin, where an estimated 900 civilians managed to take their own lives over a 72-hour period out of fear of what Soviet forces would do to them.

With the end of the war approaching, it had become abundantly clear that the Nazis were not going to win. As Soviet troops pushed their way into Germany, many civilians feared that they would be terrorized. By the end of April 1945, the Red Army had made its way to Demmin.

In the 1920s and ‘30s, Demmin saw a rise in right-wing nationalists. Much of the town was part of the German National People’s Party. Civilians boycotted Jewish businesses and the town even sold the only synagogue to a furniture store. Most Jews were able to move before the war had begun.



Nazi officials, the police, the Wehrmacht, and many citizens chose to leave the city before the Red Army’s arrival. As forces grew nearer, the Wehrmacht demolished the two bridges leading into Demmin as they retreated to safety. Because the city was mostly surrounded by water, this left townspeople with little to no means for escape.

Many civilians hung white flags above their doors, while others chose to try and fight back against Soviet troops. One afternoon, however, word broke that Hitler had died.

Thousands of Soviet soldiers began ransacking the houses and looting for belongings. Between April 30 and May 2, 1945, more than 80 percent of the city had been destroyed. Soviet soldiers began performing crude acts of sexual assault and executions before burning the town to the ground.

Left with no other option, hundreds of civilians took their own lives. People could be seen jumping into water, slashing their wrists, hanging themselves from trees, and using a variety of other methods to end the panic. Many families committed suicide together.

Most of the abandoned corpses were buried together in mass graves. Once the war had ended, the devastation at Demmin became a taboo topic for members of the East German Communist government.

It always amazes me how stories like this fall through the cracks of time. So much bloodshed goes almost completely unnoticed. While Demmin's townspeople certainly weren't faultless, imagine the desperation they must have felt when they were pushed to the limit.

BREAKING NEWS: Verizon is acquiring Yahoo, ending the internet pioneer's two-decade run as independent company.

Yahoo has agreed to sell its core assets to telecom giant Verizon for $4.8 billion, ending a 20-year run by the internet pioneer as an independent company, the firms announced Monday.

Verizon chief executive Lowell McAdam said Yahoo would be integrated into its recently acquired AOL unit to create "a top global mobile media company, and help accelerate our revenue stream in digital advertising."

The acquisition, expected to close in early 2017, will exclude Yahoo's cash, certain patent holdings, and its big share in China's Alibaba Group and stake in Yahoo Japan.

The deal will leave Yahoo as a separate investment company that will change its name after the transaction.

Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, said in a statement: "Yahoo is a company that has changed the world, and will continue to do so through this combination with Verizon and AOL."

She added that the deal separates the core Yahoo business from its Asian asset equity stakes, and "is an important step in our plan to unlock shareholder value for Yahoo."

The deal comes with Yahoo, a onetime leader in the online space, struggling to keep up with rivals like Google and Facebook.

“We have enormous respect for what Yahoo has accomplished: this transaction is about unleashing Yahoo’s full potential, building upon our collective synergies, and strengthening and accelerating that growth,” AOL Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Armstrong said Monday in a statement. “Combining Verizon, AOL and Yahoo will create a new powerful competitive rival in mobile media, and an open, scaled alternative offering for advertisers and publishers.”

Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki of the APC, and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu of the PDP, appeared before an Abuja High Court on Monday, after being sued by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), for allegedly forging the Senate Standing Rules, in order to emerge as Principal Officers of the Senate.

The story so far, goes thus: While aggrieved APC Senators were elsewhere, meeting with the Party’s leadership, the shrewd Bukola Saraki who had allegedly previously connived with his ‘like-minded APC Senators’ and opposition PDP Senators, suddenly emerged as President of the 8th Senate. As the mystery unraveled, accusations were leveled at Saraki and Ekweremadu, by the aggrieved APC Senators, who claimed that both men had conspired to ‘amend’ the Senate Rule Book in order to attain the top Senate positions.

As the drama recently unfolded with the court summons served on Saraki and Ekweremadu, members of the Senate in support of both men began screaming that the Executive arm of Government was turning into a dictatorship, gunning for Saraki’s blood. A statement signed by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, accused the Executive and Judiciary, of meddling into the affairs of the Legislature, in a matter that had already been resolved in the Senate. The Senate then tried to push blame for any amendment of the Rule Book to the National Assembly bureaucracy, stating that the book was handed over to the legislature by the bureaucracy (seeming to infer that any amendment must have been done by the latter). In a swift counter-reaction, the outgoing Clerk of the Senate, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa, who alongside his deputy, Benedict Efeturi, had also been summoned by the court, stated that the bureaucracy had actually gotten the Rule Book from the Senate, after it had been amended by the leadership of the apex legislative chamber!

So, who really is to blame? Saraki has stated that he is innocent, and that this is another desperate attempt by his detractors to nail him. He says that prior to his election as Senate President on June 9 2015, he was simply a Senator-elect, just like his fellow other Senators, and thus, was in no position to influence the rules. Ekweremadu for his own part has reminded his ‘persecutors’ that no condition is permanent!

The AGF, Abubakar Malami, is unbothered by the Senate accusations. In his opinion, the Principal Officers have a case to answer. Contrary to accusations leveled against him, Malami says that there has been no intrusion by the Executive and Judiciary, into the affairs of the Legislature, and that he is simply doing his job as the nations’ Chief Law Officer, vested with the authority to initiate criminal proceedings in any Court of Law within the Federation. Malami also states that his suit was initiated based on recommendations from the Inspector General of Police, who had initiated investigations when aggrieved APC Senators cried Wolf against Saraki and Ekweremadu. This is the synopsis of the case so far.

Now, to the crux of the matter. After the two men were summoned, an Igbo group, Ohaneze Youths, threatened to disrupt the proceedings, because Ekweremadu is their ‘fellow son’! In their words, “In as much as we do not condone any act of illegality from any quarters, we make bold to state that the present attempt to arraign Senator Saraki and Ekweremadu is ill-motivated and politically-induced.” Threatening to mobilize against the AGF’s suit, the group further stated, “In particular, our son, Senator Ike Ekweremadu is occupying the highest political office in the South-East and should not be unduly humiliated and embarrassed by these recurring antics. We shall no longer take it lightly.”

So because Ekweremadu is an Igbo man, he should not be arraigned in court? How utterly stupid!

Now, it is statements that these, that keep tearing Nigeria apart. Nigerians are always too quick to inject tribal affiliations into any and every issue. If a man is accused of a crime, why not be more bothered about making sure that the rule of law is followed, instead of ascribing it to political witchcraft and an attack on any particular tribe? We must move past this sort of foolishness, and face serious issue intelligently! Nobody has convicted either Saraki or Ekweremadu of any crime. Accusations have simply been leveled…accusations which can be dispelled (or not) in a Court of Law.

We are not here to harper on the issue of the alleged ‘one-sided nature of the fight against criminality and corruption.’ Besides, the suit was initiated against an APC man (albeit, one with many legal battles to fight) and a PDP man. If there are ‘sensible grievances’- as there probably are- then let us tackle them in court. But while we’re at it, let us drop tribal sentiments to the corner!

Embattled former militant kingpin, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, who is wanted by the Federal Government and has allegedly fled to Libya, made a passionate appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday. Tompolo called on the President to prevail on the Nigerian Army to return the golden sword, which was allegedly seized by the military during the invasion of Gbaramatu kingdom- Tompolo's ancestral home- last month.
According to Tompolo, the ‘golden sword’, which is also referred to as the traditional symbol of authority, was allegedly removed from the ‘Egbesu Shrine’ during the invasion of Oporoza, headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom, in Warri South-West of Delta State, by Nigerian soldiers.
The former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, stated this in an open letter he addressed to President Buhari on Tuesday.
In the letter, Tompolo explained that the golden sword was seized while the military was searching for him over his alleged involvement in recent series of attacks on oil facilities, which he has consistently denied.
Tompolo, describing himself as the Chief Priest of the Egbesu Shrine, also alleged that other property worth several millions of naira belonging to Gbaramtu indigenes were still missing.
The former militant leader also called for the release of some secondary school students who were allegedly arrested and paraded as members of the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers.
His letter stated in part: “Your military has not returned the golden sword (symbol of authority) and the innocent students as well as the palace staff picked up at Oporoza town, on Saturday, May 28, 2016, to Gbaramatu Kingdom.
“Today is exactly 31 days after the invasion of the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Oporoza town, by your military, led by Brig.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya of the 4th Brigade, Benin City, in search of me, with the allegation that I am the one behind the bombing and destruction of crude oil facilities in the Niger Delta region, and the incident happened in my absence.
“But I was informed that the army was on the loose, and committed so much abomination in the community. Imagine, the traditional ruler of the kingdom was literally placed on house arrest for one week.
“As I said in my previous publications, the military made away with the Symbol of Authority of the Gbaramatu people from the Egbesu Shrine, which I am the Chief Priest. They also made away with other valuables, worth several millions of naira from the community. The most annoying one is the purported arrest of 10 young promising men, most of whom are orphans, who are secondary school students sitting for the West African Senior Secondary School Examinations, and other palace staff, and labelled them as members of the Niger Delta Avengers.”
Tompolo, who is wanted by the EFCC for money laundering, added, “As I write you now, these innocent young promising men are still with your military for no reason. This is truly man’s inhumanity to man in our own country. We are presently being treated like conquered ones because of crude oil.
“This was how they arrested Chevron Nigeria Limited staff (employees) on routine duty in Kokodiagbene community of Gbaramatu Kingdom, and labelled them members of the Niger Delta Avengers. It took spirited efforts by the leaders of the kingdom and other well-meaning Nigerians to convince the military that the arrested men were not involved in pipeline destruction.”
