LAGOS — The Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice,
Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, yesterday, disclosed that “corrupt judges will go to
jail as the government of President Muhammadu Buhari will actively promote
and ensure that corrupt judges are prosecuted and their illegally acquired assets
are returned to the state.”
Malami also vowed that there will be no sacred cow in the fight against
corruption in this dispensation.

The AGF, who spoke as a guest at the formal presentation of the report
published by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) entitled
“Go home and sin no more: Corrupt judges escaping from Justice in Nigeria,”
observed that considering the pivotal role judges play in the administration of
justice, it is important to ensure that they live above board.

important to ensure that Nigerian judges, like the proverbial Ceazer’s wife, are
beyond reproach or even suspicion. Gone are the days when corrupt judges

The Nigerian chief law officer, who was represented by Abiodun Ahikomo at the
occasion, noted that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari will
ensure that corrupt judges are prosecuted after they may have been sent out of
the Bench by the National Judicial Council (NJC) and their illegally acquired assets
returned to the state.

“We also want to alert all health professionals in the country that they should
report any case. I have described the outbreak as a national embarrassment. We
can manage embarrassment, but when we allow another outbreak to occur in
August this year, it will become a national shame to all of us. One of the things
we will do to prevent us from dragging this nation into shame is to stamp out
Lassa Fever.”
“Healthcare managers should not deceive their political leaders that all is well. All
states should consider themselves at risk.”
He noted that 17 states have been affected.


“It has affected 64 local governments across the country and we have been able
to pick 212 suspected cases. It dates back from August last year, not just this
year. It is better to over-count suspected cases than to under-count.
“The real hot spots are Niger, Bauchi, Taraba, Kano, Edo, Nasarawa, Plateau and
Rivers, but for us to be honest with ourselves, all states should consider
themselves at risk and please, put up measures to contain, prevent and reassure
the community that we are on top of the situation,” he asserted.

OWERRI—Imo State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, has summarily sacked over 3,000 workers in 19 parastatals, agencies and departments, as he stopped their salaries with effect from January 4, 2016. A former Akwa Ibom State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Otu Ita-Toyo, has said the immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, deviated from the ‘power sharing’ arrangement which was initiated by the state’s traditional chiefs in 1989.

The former chairman said Akpabio did this in order to impose Udom Emmanuel as governor. Speaking on a private radio station in the state, Planet FM, Ita-Toyo, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress, said he decided to join the APC in order to save Akwa Ibom-South senatorial district and the state from perdition.


Ita-Toyo faulted the decision of Akpabio to pick his successor from the Onna Local Government Area, explaining that the local government had produced a governor before.


The ex-PDP chair said Akpabio destroyed the arrangement that brought peace to Akwa Ibom. He accused Akpabio of organising a town hall meeting that was deceptive, insisting that Oro ethnic nationality in Akwa Ibom-South senatorial district was the ideal zone to produce the governor. He said, “I decided to leave the PDP only recently when I discovered that the party’s irredeemable cabal had in the past eight years hijacked the party and deviated from the ideals upon which it was founded. The cabal started in the post-Victor Attah PDP period. They are a group of people who seize the instrument of authority, seize the instrument of cohesion and then deal with people in a manner that is completely and totally insensitive and undemocratic.


“Based on the circumstances, defecting to the APC was the intelligent thing to do as Akwa Ibom people must be prepared to reintegrate themselves into the mainstream of Nigerian politics. All those who gave the PDP life have joined the APC in a bid to redeem the state.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission may have started tracing landed properties of some ex- service chiefs, as part of investigation into alleged arms procurement scam.
SUNDAY PUNCH learnt on Saturday that the commission was tracing the properties acquired by ex-service chiefs during their tenures to other countries.

It was gathered that the EFCC’s action was aimed at finding out if the military chiefs illegally acquired landed properties while in service. Findings showed that that the ex- service chiefs, whose properties were being tracked by the commission, included a former Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh and the immediate past Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu.
It was also learnt that the EFCC was extending its search to other military officers, whose names featured in the report of the committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe into arms procurements between 2007 and 2015. On Saturday, a newspaper (not PUNCH) had reported that operatives of the EFCC on Wednesday sealed off a house in Abuja, which was said to belong to Badeh.
The commission was reported to have grilled a son of Badeh in connection with alleged arms scandal. The anti-graft agency is currently detaining Col. N. Ashinze, a Special Military Assistant to former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, who is also facing trial for alleged diversion of $2.1bn meant for the procurement arms to fight Boko Haram insurgency.
A top source in the EFCC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “We are trying to trace houses that belong to some of military chiefs. Apart from checking their bank accounts, we want to find out if part of the money for arms procurement was spent on the houses. “We are extending our search to the United Arab Emirates and the United States. We will seek the cooperation of those countries.” Dasuki had denied allegations that funds for four fighter jets and 12 helicopters were missing, stating in a statement in December that the said equipment was signed for by Amosu. When our correspondent contacted the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, on the issue, he said he did not have the information on the issue.
“I don’t have the information that you are looking for,” he said. Buhari had on Friday ordered the EFCC to investigate 17 retired and serving military officers as well as 21 firms over the arms procurement scam. The President gave the directive following a report submitted by a panel he set up to audit arms procured between 2007 and 2015. The committee had confirmed that Nigeria spent about $2billion and another N29billion on NAF procurement alone during the period in question. According to the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu, the EFCC will probe the 21 companies and their directors for alleged fundamental breaches associated with the procurements by the Office of the NSA and the Nigerian Air Force.
