Sorry bro. I'm sure it's not a B.Y Mafit thing though. Dates are dicey as it can be available one minute and not the next. I'm sure the dates were closed temporarily and they must have been waiting to see if it would re-open.

I think TOEFL should be made to be like IELTS where you can see the seat availability and make choices based on that.

There are way too many satisfied customers that I personally know of and I'm sure they put in their best as well.

Wish you the best.

YoungTesla:
Hi guys, this is to prospective GRE/TOEFL registrants pls stay away from B.Y Mafit for now. I registered with this certain coy on the Feb 13 and I’m yet to get the payment confirmation order on my account.

I explained to them why they needed to register me ASAP to get March 3 exam date for the Lagos centers, simply cos the deadline for application to the school I’m applying is March 15.

I told them I need a refund to find another means, cos the Abuja center is still open for March 3 and 10, they keep telling me to be patient and lose out on ur Abuja centers too?

P:S This is not a campaign of calumny, it’s based on my unpleasant experience with them. I’ve heard good things about them, but they are messed up at the moment.

Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by frostsc: 7:01pm On Feb 07, 2018
As earlier promised, Ill be sharing tips that worked for me on my essay application. This particular one really helped. Also, you can visit www.studential.com and browse through the tons of essays there. There is a big fat chance that you will see someone who has written something close to what you intend writing. Take note of the following:

DO NOT COPY/PASTE AN ESSAY FROM THE INTERNET! Admission officers know when you do this and they take plagiarism very seriously. It's better to be guided by the many samples online and take a cue from their analysis, breakdown and format.

Chances are also that if you have really read for your GRE, you should be able to import some of the skills you learnt on Analytical writing.

This particular set of tips helped me.

1. Pick a topic you’re passionate about.

Your writing will be both easier and more genuine if you write about what you want to write about, instead of writing about what you think colleges want to hear. The most successful essays describe a moment of personal growth, difficulty, strength, or confidence, all of which people experience in vastly different ways.

If you are serious about your college essay, you will most likely be spending a fair amount of time brainstorming, writing, and editing until you make it as near perfect as possible. Understandably, this process will proceed quicker if you actually enjoy the topic you are writing about.

More importantly, if you love the topic you choose, your reader will see it in your writing: the more passion you feel for a subject, the easier it will be to express yourself. So if your greatest personal growth story occurred as you were picking out socks for the day, so be it. Perhaps you managed to find courage on a stage in front of two thousand, or maybe just two people.

Remember that this is your personal statement, your only chance to differentiate yourself as a unique individual to colleges apart from grades, test scores, and resumes. Write about a topic that excites you, and you will excite your reader.

2. Engage your reader from the first sentence.

Regardless of the topic you choose, your reader’s interest must be captured in the first sentence. Out of thousands of essays, why should yours stand out? A perfect introduction will leap out to the reader and grab their attention.

The best way to do this is through as much detail as you can muster. If you have chosen a sport or activity you excel in, show your reader through your words a split second of what participating in the activity is like. Write as if you are telling a story: what was the setting? What was the weather like? Were there other people there? What emotions were coursing through you at that exact moment?

Many students will begin their essays, “The most life-changing/important/difficult moment in my life has been___.” Over time, admissions officers will lose steam over the constant repetition, and all essays that begin as such will fail to make an impact.

Make it easier for your reader to remember you by writing a story as your introduction. The more specific detail you add in, the more the reader will get into the story and the more sold they’ll be on you.

3. Ask yourself “So What?”

As with any good essay, you should spend at least a paragraph explaining the “so what?” aspect of your essay. If you have chosen a specific activity to write about, in addition to writing about the activity itself, colleges want to know why this particular activity has made an impact on your life.

So you’ve been playing baseball for the last ten years, so what? Perhaps playing baseball taught you teamwork, or made you appreciate the value of practice and determination in achieving your goals. As this is a college essay with a point to make about your character, a substantial portion of your essay should answer the “so what?” question.

Colleges want to know how you have grown as a person through your own experiences and how they have changed you, and stating why such experiences were important to you aid in convincing admissions officers that their school could use more students like you.

If your detail and story-like aspect of your essay comes at the beginning, your “so what?” moment should wrap up your essay, connecting your activity in question with the purpose behind your choice of topic.

4. Read through your essay out loud.

It goes without saying that you should spell-check your essay before sending it off to colleges. As your personal statement is one you will presumably be using for the majority of your college applications (if your colleges use CollgeApp), there is no excuse for sending off an essay that is not completely free of mechanical and grammatical errors.

In addition to the automatic spellcheck on Microsoft Word, set time aside to read over your paper out loud. This will allow you to catch things your mind might otherwise overlook; because you are able to hear any wrong grammar or sentence structure, you are less likely to skip over it.

It is also wise to ask for a second opinion: let your parents read it, your English teacher or your friends. Ask them to read it and tell you what they thought the central message they got out of it was; if it is the same message you were hoping to send to admissions officers, your essay has succeeded.

--- In my next post I will be discussing something very substantial.

Best of luck guys

I made that statement cos we are still in January. However, given the fact that you have not done your evaluation and other things and more importantly that it's not just about the admission but also about funding,
I would suggest you look at other entry terms.

I thought fall 2018 registration is already closing by now

Also, evaluation usually take time especially now that most schools are on strike.

And am planning to write GRE by April

I Don't really understand what you mean by admission terms

More light will be appreciated.

Thanks
Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by frostsc: 1:15pm On Jan 25, 2018
Your GPA seems good enough, though, many schools would frown at an HND. Of course as rightly indicated,
You may want to take the GRE to boost your chances of getting in.

It is better to evaluate your transcripts first but don't request for it to be sent to the school until you see it. Let's see if they would say it is equivalent to a US college degree then you can be in the clear to send.

You can check out Wright State University.

Which admission term are you looking at?

Cheers!

Darius4God:
What are my chances of getting scholarship without GRE or TOFEL?

Good question. It is possible to get scholarships but many of these scholarships would be institutional based scholarships like governmental, communal based or awarding bodies. These are very competitive and many at times evasive.

The best scholarship you can get would be the one from the school. The thing about the GRE is that is is more or less like a pruning instrument. Schools receive funding and they have to disburse these funding in scholarships. In order to be fair, they use the GRE along with other indices to select who they will give these funds. Many schools would not accept you into their program without a GRE score; so, scholarships would also not be possible without it.

In as much as one would like to skip the GRE, in practical terms, it makes it easier to get funding.
Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by frostsc: 8:49am On Jan 25, 2018
So... Let's get down to business shall we?

In the next few posts or maybe few days, I will be sharing tips and steps for people who do not have a hang of what we are talking about and how to start and finish your applications, at least from my own point of view. I'll start off from the very beginning. Gaining admission. I suggest you bookmark this thread and check from time to time.

1. Do you really want to study abroad? : Studying abroad from my own experience and from discussing with other people normally starts as a wishful thinking or due to the poor state of our educational system. To some, they wish to study abroad due to the glitters they see on TV screens and their friends who "travelled out" at some point. To some, its a means of achieving their educational ambition. This may seem obvious, but before starting your grad school application, it’s worth spending some time thinking about exactly why you’re applying. This may include your passion for the subject and desire for academic challenge, as well as how you hope to benefit from the degree in the longer term. The first set of questions prospective Masters students need to ask are internal, and addressed to themselves: What are my professional and personal goals? What are my academic and professional strengths and weaknesses? What are the characteristics of the universities and cities in which I would like to study? Having a thorough understanding of your reasons for applying to grad school will not only help you to select the most relevant courses to apply to; it will also help you to convince admissions officers that you’re a perfect match for their graduate program.

2. Spend time researching: You need to devote a sizeable number of man hours to conducting research on the schools, scholarship opportunities and graduate assistantships. Get a cue from scholastica who knew exactly what he wanted and knew the requirements of the scholarships he was applying for even before he applied. All these are available on a google search.

3. When you have pruned down your school based on the aforementioned indices, it's time to look at application requirements and deadlines. Many scholarship applications have early and strict deadlines, so, you need to put in your application early enough. Take the GRE and TOEFL so you would be in the clear. It's a lot of work.

4. DO NOT PAY ANY AGENT TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR SCHOOL APPLICATION: Many of these agents have partnership with expensive schools that will drain you dry and won't give you one penny in scholarships or grants as they are out to milk you of your hard earned money. Well, I know Mafit does admission processing, so for the first time, I may not support them on this grin grin grin . Thingy is, when you go from one agency to another, you will see the same set of schools everywhere. Many agents will also force you to take schools and programs that are not the best for you. Some will not even apply to the school you want and give you a lousy school because they have some kind of commission structure for them. Most of all, at the embassy, those guys know all these school and the moment you get to the embassy, they already know you went through an agent and that is why many people get denied. Don't fall into that trap!

5. Getting admissions/scholarship is not as hard as you think: Just follow the rules, know which qualifications work for you, meet deadlines, apply to as many schools as you can, get your GRE and TOEFL scores and ask questions

In my next post I will advise on statement of purpose, Letters of recommendations and how to get the application process right.

Cheers!

Of course people would not really want to say much on the platform any longer as the main purpose has been derailed. As I earlier said, I will not engage in a banter with any particular person. Learner007, please save your energy. What's happening here is lucid enough. I would suggest you help others on this forum by answering relevant questions and sharing your wealth of experience as those who began this thread did and are reaping the fruits as they all have became successful in their quest as well. Share your thoughts and assist others. Don't banter.

My purpose on this thread are multivaried but can be encapsulated under two distinct sub headings

1. Help others through the little experience I have gathered in this process

2. Help shed light on what helped me. And that's B.Y Mafit. I spent the whole week at Mafit every week for months going for lectures, speaking with staffs, getting assistance with application, getting everything for FREE. And I am here to talk about that. The networking with students some of which are here and have refused to talk for the fear of being attacked is great. It's like a big family there and we help each other a lot. Even learning is community based as we take it outside the classroom walls and we are up till 3am at times, solving difficult equations. The instructor who simplifies it all, "Mr. James" also deserves a medal. I just feel it's a little to give back considering how much I have been impacted from start till I got my visa. When you see people stand up for them here, it's not just gain say. No matter how much I am hushed up, it's a waste of time.

If you go back on this thread, you will see tons of others who have done exactly what I am doing now. It's hard to hide a light under a bushel. Yes I am also here to talk about Mafit. Get a padlock and put on my lips. You still will not stop me. I advise you get used to it. And that's a general statement not targeted at any one

For those who have things to share here. Points, materials, scholarships, schools and the likes, you have an open floor. Remember the law of Karma. What goes around comes around.

Once again, I wish everyone success. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post it and I will answer to the best of my knowledge.
Don't be deterred. You will get there!

Battywonder:
Hello Fall 2019 candidates.
How has GRE prep been so far?
Hope we're not sleeping?
Let's all keep this thread alive.
If you have Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis, please let me know. I really need the book.
I wish everyone good luck.

Well, I believe the newer generation who are computer savvy would prefer the TOEFL. I personally think the TOEFL is easier to predict than the IELTS. But it should not surprise you that those quite advanced in age who are not computer savvy would rather the IELTS. For me though, I would go for the TOEFL.

I think I now understand what is going on in this thread. cheesy cheesy cheesy My Oga Scholastica and Time2Smile I'm sure you do now as well. cheesy cheesy cheesy
Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by frostsc: 1:10pm On Jan 24, 2018
I would have replied but Ive been quite busy with preparations and all. Unfortunately, I couldn't meet up with this entry as many things hindered my preparation. I had to opt to differ the admission but I've been working assiduously to ensure I do not miss out on the wonderful package I got.

Mine is a story of God's grace and in as much as one would not want to bring spirituality into the whole thing; as there are people who prayed and fasted and still didn't achieve their aim, it is quite imperative to note that prayers, accompanied by purpose and guided by the right information are the ingredients for success.

Seriously, this whole thing started as a joke for me. I didn't preempt or really pre-plan it. It was just a joke. Until I got my visa, it wasn't looking real at all. Perhaps that was why I didn't make adequate preparations to travel immediately. It was only my brother that knew about it. I didn't tell my parents until after my scores were out and the whole admission was finalized. My dad just gave me all the pep talk and started the whole "Remember the son of whom you are talk"... I was like Dad, I never collect visa left to talk of travel na. cheesy cheesy . But I know he marvelled at the fact that I hid such a thing from him.

After much ado, filling the DS 160 and preparing my mind for the task ahead, I left mainland the day before my interview to stay with a friend on the Island. I didn't want stories that touch the heart that maybe one tyre punctured on the road or one fuel finished in one car or it is the day of my visa interview that Oro decided to come out in Lagos. Even if Oro came out, omo na to treck go embassy. grin grin grin grin

So, I got there quite early and I was virtually sweating. Honestly, I don't know if it's just me but I hardly slept the previous night. Reality just began to dawn on me. In my mind, I was like... This is it! But I remembered the short discuss I had with friends I made at B.Y Mafit and some of our by the side discussions on visa and stuff. So, I put all that into action. Got control of my emotions, focused on my answers, and worked on my psychology. The mindset was "It's not the end of the world if I am not given". One thing I learned at Mafit was that many people go to the interview as if their life's depends on it. This leads to unnecessary tension and an influx of adrenaline in the system. This has ripple effect on your performance and coordination and the way you respond. Also, your choice of reply matters.

So, I joined the queue and some guys at the top end of the queue (Their staffs) were barking orders on no double passport, and the time slots for those that should be on the queue. I got in and they checked my SEVIS receipt and forms. Took a sit and I was later ushered into the embassy proper. Another set of security checks before I made my way into the hall where the interview was to be conducted. You could virtually sense the tension in the room. Omo it is not easy. It's like the gate of heaven ... And I saw many people going to the left i.e back to Nigeria with a Blue form. If you have a white form, then you go to the right. LOL.

Fast track to the visa interview proper:

VO: Hello

Me: Good day sir (With a James Bond smile. Not too detailed and not to strict. Casual sexy. cool wink )

VO: Why are you going to the US?

Me: I'm going for my master's program at soso University for my MBA. (I didn't wait for him to ask and I quickly interjected). I actually got to know about the school online and after I went through their programs, I discovered that it actually stood out and I felt since I had a great GRE score and my CGPA was competitive enough I could apply to the school and get the funding they promised.

VO: Oh so, you got funding?

Me: Yes I did (I also interjected). Though I got offers from other schools, but I feel this had the best package for me.

VO: Can I see your test scores?

Me: Brought out my GRE and TOEFL scores... the ones I was carrying placard like like someone taking a mugshot).

He stared at it for minutes and kept on looking at it. At some point he just dropped it and was looking at me for like a minute or two. I was confused but I didn't let it show. After a while he continued:

VO: So, who is sponsoring your education?

Me: I got full funding but in case I need anything I have my parents support. (Brought out my sponsor's statement of account)

VO: Have you travelled before? (No I haven't)

Let me dwell on this a bit. I got some people telling me virgin passport is not good and I should waste money stamping one passport in and out and traveling and stuff. Trash that.

VO: (Typing something on his system.) Lecture me. What is an MBA and what is it's importance to you when you are done?

Me: (I never experrerrit. That was a blow in the jugular... But I calmed myself and ensured the internal world war 2 in me didn't erupt). Sincerely I can't remember everything I said at this point. I shaa know I was talking and he was looking at me with a blank face as if I was talking rubbish.

VO: (After a while he cut me short and said something along the lines of picking up my passport and handed me the white paper).

So.. There it goes. The major thing is that you get prepared and work on your mind. Pray as well and hope for the best.

Wish everyone about to go for their interview great success!

Once again, you are right. I'm a shameless promoter of Mafit. I'm on stage one of shameless. Wait till I get to stage 10. grin grin grin grin . Nigerians. Chai! I have suffered. I guess you have to call out every single one who has spoken of Mafit here. Including all those who insisted on them... And that includes the fore fathers of this thread.

I wish I got admission to MIT as you said. I can't remember mentioning MIT anywhere. And FYI, GRE is not the only indices for full funding. I've seen people with less than 320 get full funding. Nigerians have a lot to learn from Indians. Like seriously. Getting a lot of information from those guys really helped me.

This is the last response you will get from me. Except you want to fill shilling application. I would gladly welcome you to shill for Mafit. grin cheesy cheesy cheesy

I hold nothing against you tho. The way I have spoken about them too is quite much. I wasnt a nairalander before i joined this topic. I understand your view point. But seriously, I was just happy. That's all. But as I said, it's your opinion and you are entitled to it.

Peace.

There's also an alternate universe somewhere in which you are getting 340 on the GRE and walking into MIT/full ride; still won't change my impression of you as a shameless promoter for Mafit.

Of course I'm shilling for Mafit. Its quite obvious. I've not even started. I'm just warming up. grin grin grin . Bro, do you know what it means to have full funding? D you know how many people would die to have that? I'll answer your question with an analogy. If you attend a church let's say MFM and you were crippled and they prayed for you and you could walk and you see another crippled man outside, no one needs to ask... in fact you will drag him to the same church.

My test scores, the school I chose, the whole application process and yes, the visa I got two days ago can be traced to my coming in touch with Mafit. So, yes... I'll speak about them more and more for whoever cares to listen. I'm sure there are tons of others that have been helped by Mafit and they are keeping quiet. I won't.

Smells fishy. Sounds like you're shilling for Mafit. Only 23 posts to date and in about 60% of your posts, you're basically advertising for Mafit.

Very true. If not for this thread, I would still be working my shitty job and wouldn't have known exactly what to do.
No one is really saying anything any longer. No experiences and all. At least, I came back to state my experience and what worked for me.

I noticed the group is dying already because its purpose has been defeated. Most eminent contributors like scholastica 16 and others are being reticent because of the evasiveness and covertness of we the new set. I will suggest "Pming" should stop for now or else if only the need calls for it and all information should be post directly on the thread. I will also suggest that everyone should post their stats so as to know who to direct a particular question to, if you support this motion, like this post and if you do not, just click on share.

It happens like that. Sorry about your experience. The thing about success is it never comes easy. When I did my own GRE, I had to resign from work. People saw me as crazy. Many at times people come here and post success stories and all but they don't go deep into the sacrifices they made to make it happen.

I understand also that writing the test again needs a lot of pshycing up. Many people write the test and they have significant improvements but only when they are able to learn from their flaws and develop on them.

Nothing good comes easy. Please restrategize and re-fire. I believe you should be able to ace the TOEFL.

Best of luck

It's quite easy to ace. What worked for me though was the classes at B.Y Mafit. I attended the classes and used that as a baseline for further studies. As I was not a mathematics pro, I just religiously followed and built on that.

If you are in Lagos or Abuja, I suggest you attend the classes even if you are doing personal study. B.Y Mafit is the only organization in Nigeria as of now that offers free class based lectures for tbe TOEFL and GRE and as I said earlier, it's the best. Trust me.

The major challenge though may be time but you can check out their weekend lectures as well.

If you can't make it for either then make the best use of the materials given. They give you free Kaplan textbook, free magoosh access and other aids in addition to the free lectures.

Best of luck!

Everyone here have either travelled to their village or are busy crunching the chicken... or are fasting and praying towards the new year... or are sleeping the sleep now in preparation for watchnight service... so that the evil that is cast out from someone will not enter them. grin grin grin

Okay seriously. Yes you can download your score report and attach it as a PDF. I'm not sure if it's just me but these reports where you are made to carry a placard like you are taking a mugshot.

AWA should be out before your deadline.

All the best.

Compliment of the season buddies. Please I need some illumination concerning GRE. I plan to give the GRE on January 4th but the priority deadline for one of my target schools is January 15.

My questions are:

Firstly, does GRE produce online examinee report like TOEFL. I plan to upload it for my online application during application in case the official scores from ETS does not arrive the School before January 15th.

Secondly, for those that wrote GRE lately in Lagos approximately after how many days after the test date was the result ready--I mean AWA?

Thank you all for your anticipated responses.

Of course you can apply to schools in the US. Your GPA is not super fantastic so, my advice would be to write the GRE and do well so that can boost your chances of getting in.

Another mistake you shouldn't make would be to put all your eggs in the basket of ivy league schools. I'm not saying you shouldn't apply to them but have a fail safe plan. Though the last time I checked, schools that were fail safe ain't fail safe as they used to be but at least apply to such schools.

You may also start applying early as deadline for Fall are closer than you think.

Most importantly, have good GRE scores. Target like 315 and above.

Good luck!

please what's Mafit address?

You can visit their site at www.gregmattoeflnigeria.com . They have presence in Abuja as well as Lagos. Lagos is somewhere in Obafemi Awolowo Way. I think number 77 while the Abuja one... I can't help with that. Visit their site. grin . They are the only ones who give Free lectures for GRE, GMAT and TOEFL in Nigeria and believe me it's better than the paid lectures you get anywhere. I'm talking from experience.

Where is B.Y Mafit on this thread sef? I think they should have presence here.

You can call B.Y Mafit today. I'm sure it's because of the public holidays.

B.Y Mafit is still the best in my own view. You need to attend lectures there once to know what I'm talking about. Plus they've been around for a long time and trusted based on track record. My two cents would be that you go with them to get those great scores.
Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by frostsc: 9:59pm On Nov 08, 2017
You must have visited B.Y Mafit a while ago. I can authoritatively tell you that they have weekend lectures now and it's free just like the weekday lectures.

starziod:

A friend recommended also to B.Y Mafit but unfortunately when i went there i learnt they dont offer weekend lectures.

I will appreciate if anyone here can recommend a very very good place that offer free(or paid) lectures.

Thanks and God bless us all!

I would advise you do it at a later date. However if you are working with a deadline, you may as well just go for it.
