Career / Barclays Bank Installs Device To Track Workers At Desks by froz(m): 2:13pm On Aug 28, 2017
Managers were peppered with queries when investment bank staff in London, United Kingdom discovered black boxes stuck to the underside of their desks in recent months, according to several Barclays employees who asked not to be identified speaking about their workplace.

They turned out to be tracking devices called OccupEye, which use heat and motion sensors to record how long employees are spending at their posts.

There was a “phased roll-out” of the devices, and Barclays staff and the Unite union were notified before they were installed, although the bank did not send out a specific memo about them, according to spokesperson Tom Hoskin.

The Barclays employees said they don’t remember being informed about the boxes, but spokespeople for the bank said there have been no official human resources complaints.

The devices, made by Blackburn, UK-based Cad-Capture, are pitched as a way for companies to find out how they can reduce office space, providing a multi-coloured dashboard to show managers which workstations are unoccupied and analyse usage trends.

“The sensors aren’t monitoring people or their productivity; they are assessing office space usage,” the bank said in an emailed statement. “This sort of analysis helps us to reduce costs, for example, managing energy consumption, or identifying opportunities to further adopt flexible work environments.”

Hot-desking may appeal as a cost-cutting strategy to Barclays chief executive officer Jes Staley, who has said there are “tremendous savings” to be made by reducing the bank’s real-estate footprint.

In December, Barclays sublet office space in London’s Canary Wharf district to the government, saving about £35m a year.

Investment banks are increasingly using technology to keep tabs on how their staff spends their time. Barclays has introduced a computer system to track how much is earned from every client, allowing bosses to determine how much time traders, analysts and salespeople should spend with each customer.

Business / Nigeria To Turn Over Management Of Arik Air To Ethiopian Airlines by froz(m): 3:57pm On Aug 27, 2017
The Nigerian government plans to hand over management control of Arik Air to Ethiopian Airlines under an agreement aimed at resurrecting Arik as Nigeria’s national carrier.

Nigerian and Ethiopian officials are shuttling between Abuja and Addis Ababa to hammer out a deal on the aviation cooperation agreement. Nigeria’s minister plenipotentiary in Addis Ababa, Godfrey Odudigbo, told AINthat negotiations continue between the government of Nigeria and Ethiopian Airlines over the process by which it would manage Arik Air on a contract basis. Odudigbo said the agreement would also allow Ethiopian Airlines—Africa’s largest carrier—to provide technical assistance to Nigeria in the effort to relaunch Arik as its flag carrier.

Arik Air ranks as the largest private airline in Nigeria and has served as its de-facto national carrier since Air Nigeria ceased operation in 2012. In February, the government of Nigeria, through the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), took control of Arik Air and grounded most of its aircraft after the airline failed to pay its employees and creditors for months.

Odudigbo told AIN that the governments of Nigeria and Ethiopia meanwhile have established a joint commission to negotiate toward stronger bilateral relations. “At that joint commission meeting, all bilateral agreements would be signed,” he said. “That also includes the management contract of Arik Air.”

According to Odudigbo, the joint commission would meet in November in Abuja, Nigeria, with an eye toward signing the agreement soon thereafter. “We are hoping that the management contract of Arik Air will be signed in November after the joint commission negotiation held in Abuja,” he told AIN. “The government of Nigeria believes that Ethiopian Airlines is doing very well in the aviation industry. We want to learn from their experiences. If they manage Arik Air, they could revive and expand the company in Nigeria.”

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Tewolde Gebremariam confirmed that the Arik Air management contract negotiation with AMCON is progressing and that discussions on detailed technical matters with the Nigerian officials have reached an advanced stage. “Without going into details I can say that the negotiation is progressing very well,” he said

Gebremariam noted that while Ethiopian would leave open the possibility of a future equity investment, discussions have so far involved only the management contract.

One-time flag carrier Air Nigeria ceased operation in 2012 due to financial difficulties, leaving Africa’s largest economy without a national airline. Ten years earlier, Nigeria Airways liquidated, and Virgin Nigeria, a joint venture between the government of Nigeria and Virgin Atlantic, had also collapsed.

Arik Air has also suffered from financial difficulties and mounting debt. Established in 2006, Arik, at its peak, served 26 domestic, regional and international destinations including Johannesburg, London and New York, with 29 airplanes, mainly Boeing and Bombardier models. The airline now operates 60 percent of Nigeria’s domestic flights but has pared its international services considerably.

The founders of Arik furiously protested the government’s decision to take over the airline. In fact, the founder of Arik Air, Joseph Arumemi-Ikhide, warned that he would sue Ethiopian Airlines if it dares to take over the management of Arik Air.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines has become a big player in Nigeria since it began flying there in the 1960s. It serves five destinations in Africa’s top oil producing country—namely Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Enugu and Kaduna—from its main hub in Addis Ababa. “The government of Nigeria trusts Ethiopian because it has been serving Nigeria since we became independent,” Odudigbo concluded.

Business / MAERSK Tankers Teams Up With Cargometrics On Big Data by froz(m): 9:42pm On Aug 26, 2017
Maersk Tankers, part of the energy division of Danish A.P. Moller – Maersk, has entered into an equity agreement with CargoMetrics Technologies LLC (CargoMetrics), a Boston-based hedge fund specialising in quantitative trading models derived from shipping data.

In line with the terms of the deal, Maersk Tankers will be provided with access and exclusive rights to CargoMetrics’ analytical models, algorithms and capabilities, the tanker owner said.

CargoMetrics links satellite signals, historical shipping data and proprietary analytics for trading purposes in its systematic investment platform.

“In the partnership, we will accelerate our use of digital solutions to enable our business strategy, which will deliver value to our customers and partners while we generate income and develop our position as the digital frontrunner in the product tanker industry,” says Soren C. Meyer, Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer, Maersk Tankers.

“Data about the ninety-percent of global trade that moves by sea is a powerful trading edge,” says Scott Borgerson, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of CargoMetrics.

“This is the quintessential partnership where we can drive returns in both of our businesses by collaborating with one of the leading players in shipping while applying our patented technology to their physical tanker operations. We are excited to team up with Maersk Tankers to further increase the use of big data in the product tanker industry.”

The agreement took effect on 21 July, and Maersk Tankers and CargoMetrics are said to be entering now an analysis phase to further identify where best to apply the digital know-how and capabilities of both companies.

Maersk Tankers owns and operates one of the largest product tanker fleets in the industry, featuring around 80 ships with an average age of 7 years.

The tanker business is yet to separate from Maersk group together with three other energy companies from the conglomerate amid focus switch to transport and logistics sector, as decided last year.

Maersk has already sold its oil business, Maersk Oil, to Total S.A for $7.45 billion in a combined share and debt transaction.

“Maersk Oil is the first of the four energy companies of A.P. Moller – Maersk for which a future structural solution has now been identified. The solutions for Maersk Drilling, Maersk Supply Service, and Maersk Tankers remain to be defined before the end of 2018,” the company said announcing the deal earlier this week.

Business / Report Shows Bank Of Industry Employees Among Best Paid by froz(m): 5:01pm On Aug 25, 2017
Data from the annual report of the Bank of Industry reveal a total of N6.79 billion was spent as staff salary for the period ended December 2016, compared to N5.5 billion the year before. As such, the bank increased its payroll by a whopping 23% even as the country facing a crushing recession.

The Bank of Industry is a Nigerian government-owned entity that offers development loans at concessionary interest rates to small and large-scale industries regarded as priority areas by the government.

Staff compensation

According to its 2016 annual report, the bank had in its payroll about 335 employees, compared to 318 the year before. Based on this, the average salary per employee comes to a whopping N20 million in 2016 alone. This is one of the highest we have seen in the financial services industry and for government-owned entities.

A breakdown of their staff salary also reveals about 141 (42%) of the staff earn above N9 million while about 291 (86%) of the customers earn about N4 million and above.

*As at 2015

When compared to some of Nigeria’s top commercial banks, the Bank of Industry appear miles ahead in terms of total staff salary cost per employee. However, it just falls short of CBN and NSIA which compensate better per employee. AMCON did not reveal its staff cost in 2016.

The employees of the bank also enjoyed about N1.2 billion in training and capacity building a figure that is 119% higher than what was reported the year before.

Directors

The annual report also reveals the directors of the company incurred an emolument of about N107.7 million for the period under review, compared to N80.6 million the year before. Waheed Olagunju is the Bank’s acting CEO. The Bank just has about four executive directors and three non-executive directors.

BOI also claims that it does not have any executive compensation, however it does admit that it incurred about N794 million in Key management compensation compared to N607 million in 2015.

The Bank of Industry also reported its employees currently owe about N652.6 million in mortgage loans.

Results

The employees of the bank also appear to justify their pay as the bank also reported a profit after tax of N14.5 billion for the period ended December 2015, representing a 67% drop in profits compared to the N44.6 billion profit posted a year earlier. It is important to add that the N44 billion profits made in 2015 was mostly due to an income fof N37.4 billion earned from the sale of its stake in WAMCO Nigeria Plc.

Bank of Industry’s annual report may have been much better in 2016 where it not for a spike in its operating expenses. The company reported an operating expense of N8.5 billion compared to N5.3 billion the year before suggesting a 60% increase. A closer look reveals an expense of N1.2 billion classified as “Business Development”, a significant increase from the N118 million incurred for the same expense line in 2015. We also observe a ,major increase in motor running and business travelling expense from N769 million to N1.49 billion in 2016.

What BOI does

The Bank’s mandate includes the provision of financial assistance for the establishment of large, medium and small projects as well as expansion, diversification and modernization of existing enterprises; and rehabilitation of ailing industries. The Bank also manages dedicated funds and through its subsidiaries, provides business advisory services, trusteeship, leasing, insurance brokerage, etc.

Business / Nigeria, China Partner To Curtail Importation Of Substandard Products by froz(m): 4:14pm On Aug 25, 2017
Nigeria is partnering with China to address the importation of substandard products into the country, an official said Monday.

Addressing the press in Abuja, Ye Shuijin, President of China Chamber of Commerce Nigeria (CCCN), confirmed that most of the fake products imported into Nigeria were not made in China. He said the CCCN and the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) had put measures in place that would check the inflow of substandard products into the country.

According to Ye, some of the measures include reporting and sanctioning culprits and also ensuring companies imbibe and pursue quality at all times. “Most of the substandard products that came to Nigeria are not from China because the Chinese government has well-structured standards in place for its products. China products are of high quality, nonetheless, the Chinese government is already cooperating with the Nigerian government to promote the importation of quality products to Nigeria,” he said.

According to reports, sub-standard products are mostly common in the importation of iron rods, electronics, electrical consumables and fittings, among others. SON in 2016, raised the alarm that 40% of electrical and electronic appliances imported into Nigeria were sub-standard and had caused loss of lives and property. It was also observed that all kinds of uncertified food items were also being imported into the country.

He, however, urged the Nigerian Customs Service importers to be cautious and do more in checkmating inflow of substandard products at the nation’s seaports and borders. The CCCN president noted that the chamber of commerce and the government have always encouraged investors from China to invest in the manufacturing sector to support the development of the Nigerian economy.

Business / Mainstreet Bank Insurance Company Unveils New Corporate Identity by froz(m): 12:09pm On Aug 24, 2017
Mainstreet Bank Insurance Brokers Company Limited, has unveiled a new brand identity to be known as AfriGlobal Insurance Brokers Limited.

The old brand, formerly owned by Skye Bank, was unveiled as AfriGlobal Insurance, following the directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that all banking institutions should divest from their non-banking subsidiaries.

At the launch of the new corporate identity in Lagos recently, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the new company, Casmir Chibuzor Azubuike, noted that the firm had undergone three phases of ownership from the defunct Afribank through Mainstreet Bank to Skye Bank.
Azubuike, stated that the firm’s new identity, would boost service delivery with its group of experienced and well groomed professionals that could compete favourably with their counterparts globally.

He recalled that the journey, started by the company on March 23, 1988, when it was registered as Afribank Insurance Brokers Company Limited, has advanced it to the present level and determination to play globally.

Informing that the new firm has been licenced to undertake all classes of insurance and reinsurance risks, the AfriGlobal CEO described the insurance industry in Nigeria as growing and stable, citing its robust capitalisation, which he contended, competes well with the banking sector.

On why the strategic sub-sectors of the national economy like the oil and gas, maritime and the likes were still being underwritten by foreign brokers, he clarified that insurance business all over the world was international by nature.

According to Azubuike, “There are even businesses in Africa and Europe that are reinsured here in Nigeria. To enhance capacity, that is why we have reinsurance, and that is why AfriGlobal is here.”
The MD who lauded the Lagos State Government for continually putting the compulsory insurance policy on the front burner, stated that the governement is ensuring that every building above two floors was insured against collapse, fire and related risks through its safety commission.

In his remark, the Chairman of AfriGlobal Insurance Broker Limited, Sylverius Okoli, stated: “We operated with the Afribank brand for about 20years under the parentship of Afribank. As an Insurance Broking Company, our liquid asset far back around 2007 to 2009, was in excess of N2billion. When Afribank became Mainstreet Bank in 2011, our company name was changed to Mainstreet Bank Insurance Brokers Co. Ltd, to reflect our new ownership.”
He noted that prior to this era, their former parent bank preferred not to dissipate energy in chasing business outside, but instead, concentrate efforts in tapping and capturing business opportunities emanating from the bank.

“Therefore, the testimony of this success is the new brand we are unveiling today. We have no doubt that by the time they are done with the ongoing re-engineering exercise of insurance brokers in Nigeria, the very weak ones would either be merged or cease to exist.

Our mission therefore is to run a very strong insurance broking company that will stand tops in the country, and effectively play in the international market,” Okoli said.

The agency’s Director General, Hakeem Dickson, pledged collaboration with brokers and the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to institutionalise safety in the polity.

The Commissioner for Insurance and special guest of honour, Muhammadu Kari, represented by Segun Farinmo, charged the firm to sustain the goodwill of the brand.
