*THE INDEPENDENCE OF OUR UNION IS AN ALL-INCLUSIVE PROJECT WORK* By *FYNESTBOI* *We become indomitable when we work together with one aim, one goal, and with unification. – Fynestboi* *"One is too insignificant a number to achieve greatness. One may bear the idea, but many is needed to grow and realise its purpose". John Maxwell* Before I delve into the thesis which my write up tend to address, let me use this medium to wish all GREAT IFE students congratulations on the Reinstatement of the Student union Activities, which was autocratically suspended by the former Vice chancellor (Prof. Bamitale Omole). It is indeed a congratulatory feat achieved by the generality of students. However, our Union is back, our pride is back, a medium through which students' needs, interests and voices are channelled and protected. However, a pertinent issue that has been the concern of every progressive and pro-students' minds is, *would our union not suffer the defeat she has encountered in the past? Would our union be able to stand up against all spirits of oppression? Would there not be such case as victimization of Union leaders and activists as it has always been a tactic of the management?* My optimistic reply therefore is, *yes it can*, and this is embedded in the un-interference of the management in the affairs of our Students' Union-which implies her *independence*. I believe that union is meant to operate without any undue interference from any quarters, as this will enable our union to build strong wall against oppression and victimization of her members or how can a union protect her member when such union is a tool in the hands of oppressors cum victimizers? This however, should be a unified clamor by the generality of Great Ife students. If you are not with such mindset, there is need to start imbibing such disposition as a dependent union is prone to *incessant strike, constant proscription, suspension of her leaders and comrades, and many other anti-student vices. Are you happy with the way our union is being constantly shortlived like the life spam of “an asthmatic patient? Happy with the way Union leaders, activists and comrades are being suspended and made to use more years than they planned for? Are you happy the way we keep lagging behind academically as a result of slim-fitted calendar as an attempt to meet up with time lost? Are you happy with the way our attempt to get our needs attended to, is being tapped in the head and made to close up like the pentacle of a flower?* *If no, then, this is the right time to stand up for her INDEPENDENCE. It is our UNION, we are strong when we work together with unified mindset.* By independence, however I do not mean totally exonerating the management from her activities because achievement resides when we work cooperatively with the management to bring into reality, our needs, but that kind of dependence where the management sees the union as tool to achieve her selfish needs needs to be curbed, as the union is not a tool to achieve selfish needs. That kind of dependence where the Management sees the union as a slave and constantly frustrates her growth needs to STOP. Our union is not a toy. it is not a bus for selfish drive, but a means through which student's needs are pressed forward, a means for agitation for her member's needs, a means to drive home needs that will cause holistic change across the nation. Apart from the management using students to wage war against students, which we need to stand up against in one accord, the other wings of the management's bird to ride on the union’s independence is the union fund, which has always been is in the management's custody. It is apposite to state that our independence as a union boils down to our financial independence. However, the fear is in the mindset of those that occupy leadership position today whose sole aim is wanton embezzlement. They forget that one’s” prestige and good name is better than any amount of money” they often premise it on after all I spent money on campaign” “shuu! And whose business is that ?” if we can't a start look out for another source other than relying on the funds with the management, we will continue to fall back as an underdog to the management. Though you might want to say that, this fund with the management is our money, paid as part of our fees. Yes I know, but don’t you think, the management use this as a bait to enslave our union? Wondering how? Our union can perfectly function without the *mama DSA fund*. This may however seem rough from the scratch, but the end will truly justify the means, and this starts from our union leaders. *Our union leaders need to cut off irrelevances in the students' union budget, (such irrelevances as phone calls, feeding et al. Didn't you eat before you were elected? Didn't you make calls before you were elected? Even if you want to object that, the number of students you call had suddenly increased, what happened to the selfless service you promised?)* *Look out for sponsors; build strong relations with the alumni (AN ONLINE PLATFORM TO FACILITATE THIS RELATIONSHIP WILL DO).* A proper and effective communication system should help strengthen this. In conclusion, the independence of our union is an all-inclusive project work and it begins with YOU, as it is only possible if we work together. If we work together as a team by giving everyone a say in the decision of the UNION then no weapon fashioned against gaining our independence shall stand. ©Fynestboi 2016. |
