Education › Great Ife Students' Union Condemns The Suspension Of UI Students Union by Fynestboi(mod): 9:21am On May 31, 2017*. Modified: 12:06pm On May 31, 2017 |
*CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL*, GREAT IFE STUDENTS' UNION Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable*_ John F. Kennedy
Revolutionary greeting to all Nigerian Students!
Great Ife Students' Union condemns the inconsiderable and unjustifiable shut of University of Ibadan and the eventual suspension of the Students' Union by the university management.
It is extremely absurd and inconsistent to the dictate of democratic principle for the university management to have considered shutting down a university just because students expressed their grievance over what they perceived to be incorrect and inappropriate in the way the university management has been treating them.
The action taken by the Management of University of Ibadan to shut down the university and eventually suspend the Union at the time when examination was about to commence is totally barbaric and tyrannical. They have clearly shown the student populace their intolerance and oppressive tendency to deprive students of their right to demonstrate and protest when their welfare condition is being handled with levity instead of proffering a drastic and clear-headed solution to the situation on ground.
Therefore, Great Ife Students' Union SAY NO to the draconic and rash decision of the University Management and demand immediate and unconditional reopen of University of Ibadan and the swift reinstatement of the activities of the Students' Union.
However, it should be clearly and unambiguously stated that students are not ready to resume until ID cards are made available to them. Therefore, ID cards must be provided before commencement of any examination whatsoever. The university has charged students for ID card as indicated in the breakdown of their school fees, thus necessary provision must be made to cater for such a need without any further delay.
Finally, we demand that students should be allowed to use hot plates in their kitchenettes as there is no part of the University handbook that states contrary to that.
Aluta Continua!!!

Education › Great Ife Students' Union Demands Proper Funding Of Education System by Fynestboi(mod): 9:25am On May 29, 2017 |
CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL GREAT IFE STUDENTS’ UNION 29/05/2017 A PUBLIC STATEMENT ON NIGERIAN DEMOCRACY DAY The Central Executive Council of Great Ife Students’ Union joins all Nigerian students and members of the general public in the celebration of this year’s Nigerian Democracy Day.
However, we shall neither allow the jamboree of today’s celebration nor the pseudo-progress that our country is claimed to have attained to distract us from condemning the wrongs in Nigeria’s economic and socio-political structures.
It cannot be gainsaid that the situation of Nigeria at this point in time is highly abysmal and pitiable. The rate of corruption of men and women at the corridor of power grows unchecked despite the intensification of the anti-graft campaign of Mr. President. It is glaring and obvious that the Federal Government of Nigeria is not interested in investing in the future of Nigerian youths and this has reflected in their insouciant attitude to proper funding of education and creation of jobs for the teeming unemployed Nigerian youths.
The Union, therefore, demands the Federal Government of Nigeria to properly fund Nigerian Education System in compliance with the 26% budgetary allocation as mandated by UNESCO.
It is the duty of every responsible government to make a huge investment in the education of its young citizens as they are the leaders of tomorrow. Thus we demand that the 2017 budget should be looked into again and adjusted to accommodate an effective implementation of adequate funding of Nigerian education system.
Also, we demand the presidency to make the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari public as Great Ife students SAY NO to an incapacitated president and acting president at the same time. This demand becomes necessary as it is impossible for a sick president or a figurehead president to lead a nation effectively.
On the final note, we demand the University Management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife to take the need for urgent and holistic improvement in the general welfare condition of Great Ife students seriously.
Also, we demand openness, transparency and accountability in the running of the university. Since students constitute the largest percentage in the demographic distribution of the university community, we demand a meaningful involvement and inclusion of students in relevant committees that have to do with social and academic welfare of Great Ife students.
Amandla Awetu!!!
Nothing Shall Us!!! Signed: Okediji Simon (ZUMA) Public Relations Officer, Great Ife SU Boluwajaiye Adeoluwa (FYNESTBOI) Secretary General, Great Ife SU Oyekan Ibukun Edward (DR IBK) President, Great Ife SU |

Education › An Open Letter To The University Management OAU, By Great Ife Students Union by Fynestboi(mod): 10:18am On May 04, 2017 |
*GREAT IFE STUDENTS' UNION*
*CENTRAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL*
*AN OPEN LETTER TO THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE, NIGERIA*
Before Great IFE turns an eyesore and the most obnoxious abode of all Universities in Nigeria, here comes the headaches of all times; our travails.
*"Every obnoxious act is a cry for help" Zig Ziglar.*
Irrevocable salutations to all great Nigerians and the entirety of students. With an heart burning with fury, fuelled with a restless mind of exasperation, we write to decry, upbraid, and censure the poor, obnoxious state of affairs causing insalubrities and risk of lives of students, especially on a well revered campus like OAU. In fact, this is really dispiriting, embarrassing, shameful, and portraying total leadership insensitivity, complete failure and outright wear out. Students are not beggars nor animals why should they be treated as such? Sadistically, even the animals in Obasanjo Farms Ota enjoy and are well treated compared to the intellectual backbones of this nation. Is this not embarrassing enough? Nigeria and her woes since 1960.
It is no longer news how the management of various varsities across the nation maltreat students by harbouring and accommodating them on filthy and "kirikiri-like" prisons called halls of residence/hostels. This kind of imbroglio is not alien or exotic to halls of residence on OAU campus. In times past especially during the Omole led draconian administration which was fantastically marked with (misappropriation, embezzlement, enlaced with rigidifications). We protested severally it yielded victimization and school closure which was synonymous to strike, we wrote it gave birth to futility. It is now the case that when we protest they lie that we are unserious, lazy and vandals as though they are doing the needful at all. When we put up articles they say that we are rude and uncultured as if a cultured management should oppress students by subjecting them to noxious learning environment. Then should we keep mute? Never! A closed mouth is a captured destiny; management of oppressors invites studentship of agitators. We are never inured, we are Great IFE Students; the standing Armies of a rush of titanic struggle, the undaunted and ever courageous comrades of Scientific Aluta, the gallant and dogged comrades who anchor that union, which is the primus inter pares in Nigeria and countries beyond, The Intellectual Fighters For Emancipation; the warlords of radical struggle devoid of rascality.
On Sunday 30th April, 2017 youths (who supposedly are tagged the leaders of tomorrow, if only the failed leaders of today will vacate their seats) were recruited into the higher intellectual market of teachers and learners as directed by the university management. This makes so obvious that the acceptance fees, school fees inter alia have been paid and that the 2016/2017 academic session has started. To avoid the envisaged embarrassing situation, we wrote to the management through her Division of Students' Affairs to ensure that the Halls of Residence are fumigated before resumption that is, Sunday 30th April, 2017 to avoid the barbaric "military coup" of bedbugs we have even been facing severely before the last session ended (2015/2016 session) and to ensure that our fresh students are not affected with this dangerous bedbugs as the need for them to live happily in their halls can never be flinched and flung.
However, it is rather painful yet unsurprising anyways that the management are still recalcitrant to doing this. Their reply was that students should vacate halls of residence before these halls can be fumigated. A responsible management who truly would not love to be seen as "anti-students" should have hastened up the process and done all necessary fumigations before this fresh session started. This is to make obvious to us that it is out of their wish to grant our utmost needs. They also claimed that some halls have been fumigated such as Angola, Mozambique, we vehemently believe that it is either these two halls were not fumigated at all or that they were not fumigated thoroughly as students still complain of bedbugs. To this effect, we cannot continue to endanger the lives of our students, their welfarism is invaluable, they are higher creatures not animals, they paid for a conducive teaching-learning environment therefore, it is a necessity without any further hesitations backed with the rush of a speedometer that all our halls be fumigated and be free from bedbugs as no university official can enjoy an office with bedbugs or room with them let alone subject their own children to such rooms. Bedbugs should be extincted from our halls of residence. We say no to their parades in our rooms they are not our roommates.
Cleanliness, they say is next to godliness. For healthy living on campus and most especially in our halls of residence, we call on the management to ensure that all the bushy parts and pathways are cleared. It is so disheartening that in spite of our requests that these should be done, they are yet undone. In some halls, the bushes are as tall as the Students' Union president. This is degrading of a varsity like ours. A bushy environment irritates, our halls should remain halls and not bushes. The failure of the management to do this would therefore mean that our lives as students are vulnerable. The bushes accommodate dangerous animals such as snakes, scorpions etc. On several occasions have we killed snakes and some other dangerous animals in our acclaimed halls of residence. Do not wait until they start to bite us. Do not stay relaxed until thieves and other unscrupulous beings start using these places as hideouts. Snakes are not domestic animals, they are not human companions, prevention they say is better than cure. The most horrifying aspect of it is that, most of our lecturers have not graduated from OAU since our halls received its last treatment. Treatment in terms of painting, repairs of window nets etc.
Still decrying the state of our halls, it is very sardonic that most rooms are without illumination some rooms are without doors. Those without illumination are either without bulbs, sockets, and even wire connection. Concomitantly, is it rooms without working wire connection that would have a working socket, bulbs and fans? Absolutely NO. Also, some rooms are without doors not to talk of door locks, this open students to unnecessary hardship. These are your duties, we do not need to tell you. Be responsible. Stop shying away from them. Do not divert funds meant for the welfarism of students to other channels because of shameful wealth accumulation. Do not bring down OAU to mud. Something is very certain, if these halls were privatized you would not have left it the way it is now, you would make it as beautiful as it can in order to maximize your profit because you as well understand that no person would want to pay for a room that is dilapidated. If this is true then, our halls must be made better than that of animals. We are not animals in the halls. If you are rigid on making our hostels suitable for living obviously, it will mean you are tagging us as Animals in these halls. We therefore refute and strongly condemn all sort of incendiary appellations. The bushy parts must be cleared with immediate alacrity and all horrible hands and lackadaisical traits of emotional sluggishness, spontaneously, naturally or intentionally making you not to quickly attend to our needs must be retracted. A responsive and responsible management should always seek in all ramifications the betterment of all students. This is one of the functions of a school. It serves as a custodian of the learners. It is therefore our rights, rather than a privilege to live like students in a conducive and fascinating environment.
On a final note, the street lights on OAU campus must be repaired. It is horrible in fact, terrifying that the management cannot blindfold their eyes from not knowing that our campus which used to be a well illuminated centre of attraction especially at night has been in total darkness. Even if you still came not to know, we demanded through a letter that we say no to darkness and that all the lights should be repaired. A deaf ear have you turned to this. This shows the generality of Great IFE Students the type of phlegmatic management we have. It is so obvious that things on this campus get worse everyday and the management are insensitive to it. Yet, no insults should come to you from us and a stubborn and unyielding management expects obedient and sycophants as students. NO, we are not stupefied, we are not "zombies" who will keep quiet even at the face of injustice and discomfort. We are not in Egypt neither are we Egyptians who would inculcate the spirit of "suffering and smiling" If you are not ashamed of the university you claim to be managing, we are in fact, so ashamed and angry with the welfarism of our students on a campus that ought to be the best in Africa in terms of its infrastructural facilities, basic amenities, et al. The spirit of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and all other heroes who have passed away groans mournfully. Their vision, mission for OAU would definitely hunt and haunt all who have contributed and is still contributing to the oppression and maltreatment students are receiving from the mean spirit.
"The time is always right to do what is right"- Martin Luther King jnr
*OUR DEMANDS* All our halls of Residence must be fumigated without delays and the fumigation must not be a ruse. It must be done thoroughly. (all blocks and floors.)
All the bushes covering us as though they are blankets must be cut off within the shortest period of time.
In all Halls of Residence, all rooms without illumination, sockets, doors and door locks should be fixed without the usual wont of reluctance.
We are not sons and daughters of darkness. Therefore, our campus must be well illuminated, all disappointing street lights should be repaired.
Before they turn to indeliberate, unintentional and extemporal undug wells through the efforts of cars and bikes, all pot holes on campus most especially at campus gate must be filled.
The porters should be put on their toes and ensure they give recognition and attention to all Great IFE students when they make their complaints.
The security on our campus must remain unflinching and further intensified.
No lecturer should for any reason harass any student on this campus. Signed: *AJIBOYE ADEKANMI A. (EFO)* *WELFARE OFFICER (07063756366)* *BOLUWAJAIYE ADEOLUWA I. Education › Kogi State University SUG Organises Massive Protest On April 26th by Fynestboi(mod): 6:45pm On Apr 23, 2017 |
Title: kogi state university SUG organises massive protest on April 26th See what the newly sworn in SUG president posted on his facebook wall earlier today.
Great Nigerian students! I wish to first of all thank all students and stakeholders of Kogi state University for the continuous support to the Students' Union Government, amidst all the betrayal. The greatest sin against humanity is to thwart the effort of the majority. I really sympathise with you all, and I commend your patience. Over the past few weeks, a lot has happened. A lot of propaganda has been on social media, a lot of deceit, betrayal, and a lot of lies from our student union leaders. Our leaders have obviously failed. But as acting SUG president, I am promising every student that this is a new dawn. We are now going to build the Students' Union Government where your dues count, where your rights are protected and where your common welfare is guaranteed. Never again will the right and interest of any student of Kogi state university be sold out. For this short period, we shall from now advocate for proper conditions and treatment from our classrooms to the hostels. We shall advocate for immediate intervention with regards to water and power supply in our school. From now on, every single naira of the Students' Union Government shall be accounted for. We have stayed home for too long. The plight of the students suffering at home for the past three months is my greatest worry. The ongoing strike is our greatest terror now, and making sure we get back to class as soon possible is our biggest priority right now. This, we shall fight for with all sincerity and diplomacy. We are already partnering all institutions in the state to have the biggest peaceful demonstration/protest ever. This mega demonstration is slated for Wednesday, 26th April, 2017 at Lokoja, as agreed at the Joint Campus Congress held on 20th April, 2017. Please debunk any news stating that there will be a protest on the 24th of April. That is another big deceit awaiting. This is our right and we are not going back on our decision. I urge every student of KSU to come out and support this peaceful protest. Once again, I thank all our students for their patience, support and cooperation. No more Facebook governance. No more permutation governance. No more April fooling. This is the dawn of a new era. This is the government of the students, by the students, and for the students, ONLY. Thanks and God bless. Anthony Edogbo Ag. SUG President KSU. http://www.madeinksu.com/2017/04/please-debunk-any-news-stating-that.html?m=1

Politics › The Insecurity Of Our Security System by The Ekpa, Stanley Ekpa by Fynestboi(op): 12:25am On Apr 11, 2017 |
*THE INSECURITY OF OUR SECURITY SYSTEM*
Just imagine you own a home without any reliable or accurate information of the basic items in your home yet you so much crave for regular upgrade and re-equipping of the home. This is the true state of the Nigerian State, a largely populated nation without an accurate biodata, development statistics, census figures, worst still without the technological capacity or investment drive to safeguard and protect the worthy lives and properties of her citizenry. I am not quick to judge but on the issue of insecurity in Nigeria, I must make haste to pass my long earned vote of no confidence on the security sector with little exception of an appreciable respect for the Nigerian Army.
A failure of social security through government's insensitivity to developmental policies is an enabler for a state of insecurity in any society. The state of insecurity in our nation is enormous, hence, I do not intend to indulge in a general discuss of the challenge but on specific ills of the operations of some of our security agencies like the unprofessional police force, VIO, Federal Road Safety Corps, NDLA and Customs. My assertion to the corrupt nature and the inherent danger these security agencies pose to many poor Nigerians is a common knowledge, hence, I do not consider my view here as novel but my little contribution towards the reconstruction of Nigeria.
Because I am not a critic nor a party to blame game, I would elect to start with what in my humble opinion should be the sustainable solution to the poor and ever 'hungry-like' nature of some officers of these agencies who have become 'extra-insatiably' greedy and barbarically corrupt: HEAVY INVESTMENT AND PROPER FUNDING OF THE SECURITY AGENCIES. Attractive remuneration, regular training and good working conditions. Funding this may seem difficult but if one third of our politicians' huge earnings are redirected to these officers' welfare then the problem will be half solved. And more importantly, our security agencies must be contented with job satisfaction.
Subsequent upon the creation of the Police Force by the sufficient provision of section 3 of the Police Act, section 4 of the Police Act provides that "The Police shall be employed for the prevention and detection of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the preservation of law and order; the protection of life and property and the due enforcement of all laws and regulations with which they are directly charged, and shall perform such military duties within or without Nigeria as may be required by them by, or under the authority of, this or any other Act", while the primary function of the Vehicle Inspection Officers is to inspect and ensure the road worthiness of vehicles on the Nigerian roads. The Nigerian Road Safety Corp is by law created to ensure that all road users abide by the extant regulations. But these agencies are grossly insensitive to the original and inherent responsibilities and duties of their offices. My major aim is to use this piece to expose how our security agencies are accessories and principal parties to criminal offenses.
It will be safe to start with the Nigerian Police Force, and by way of caveat state that not all members of this institution are corrupt but majority of them are. And the ratio for this assertion is not far fetched, from the moment one applies to the Nigerian police force, there is this natural presumption that you are enrolled into the " bribery and fraudulently corrupt " Inn. Even the new born, the devil and regrettably God Himself is fully aware that the Nigerian Police is more of a bribery service than the service of protection of lives and properties. Deductively and from peculiar practices of the Nigerian police, it is evident that the police is long on recess on the job of securing the lives and Commonwealth of the state.
Because of rapidly growing rate of unemployment and poverty in our land caused by lack of opportunities and enabling environment for innovations and ideas to thrive, so many young people have found a new direction of hope and quick answers through the popular online presence called "WORKING or YAHOO". These guys are not only pushed to committing crime against the international community and humanity but also against the dignity and honour of Nigeria as a nation. In a civilized clime, the Police Force should have intelligence insight and professional efficiency to curtail the crime but in Nigeria the reverse is the convenient story as the" WORKING BOYS" are now the highest paying agency of the Police Force. Senior officers harbour and aide the "BOYS" for more profitability in business. This applies also to bank managers. Nigeria needs a special monitoring team to sanitize the dirty and messed up system in the police force.
Now we go to the road: "Road Blocks", " Road Recklessness " and many other "Road Irresponsibilities. On your way from Lagos to Ibadan to Akure, to Kogi to Abuja, you will experience a lot of funny men called police officers whose main job and duty on the way is solely to collect N100 or mere N50, sometimes thousands of Naria depending on how they are able to manipulate you, at the expense of securing lives on the highways. I have also come across good police officers and have always tried to show them their desired honour. I have always wondered how these corrupt officers can ever detect criminals since all "faithful tithe payers" whether criminals or law abiding would have been issued FREE PASS signal. Our roads are not just safe, any thief could pass, any terrorist can easily pass with a safe journey wishes from a well bribed officer or team of officers and any thing can happen anytime on our way.
For the VIO, the worse is the case as in some places it is now an established precedent that you will be issued a white shirt of paper as receipt for a N100 bribe in place of your documents and vehicle papers. There is neither any serious inspection of your vehicle nor any offense committed if you have " settled the men on white and black uniform ". And everyday many lives are crashed and crossed to the grave on our roads for the gross omission of those responsible for ensuring road worthiness of the cars causing such accidents. Drivers overload both human beings and goods alike against the capacity of the cars, yet Road Safety Corps stand ashamed with dirty money in hands while the VIOs and Police risk their lives on the highway only trying to stop vehicles to drop into the N100 tank, a tank of greed that is never filled nor full.
What is more than the case of our collective collaboration in the chain of corruption in our own land which has held us " down-backwards" and development stagnant for so long. In fact, WE THE PEOPLE look for every slightest chance to induce these wicked uniformed men with unnecessary bribes. We feed, intertwine and mortgage our future with corrupt dispositions yet we see every trash of opportunity to blame the government. We are a people that want "magic development and miracle leadership" but life is not an accidental ceremony, every serious invention or occurrence is a deliberate design of a people.
The fact that I impliedly exonerated the Nigerin Army from this widely known crime of bribery and corruption is not an identification of the Nigerian Army as a corrupt free institution for I can still codedly take you to some of the locations where some members of the Armed Forces collect the "normal road money" without remorse or sham.
It may in the long run, not even be the case of poor funding of the security agencies that is the main challenge but primitive greed and a trace of corrupt deposit in our DNA. If not, are the American soldiers or other well behaved security officers in other part of the world with civilized and professional savvies paid with Heaven's currency? It is just passion for service to humanity, patriotism to nation and faithfulness to God.
It will be a blessing of honour to our nation if we revert to this idea of CHANGING OUR MINDSET AND HAVING A MENTAL REVOLUTION. Without a mental revolution, our case is buried in perpetual pity. We must change our orientation, we must understand that been the richest is never the same as been the most impactful. A man's happiness can only be drawn from an innermost satisfaction that comes from fulfilling and achieving an impact with what you have passion to do legitimately.
Iam pretty sure that critics will find this piece as an interesting charter of errors, and I welcome your opinions with a wide open mind to learning and robust engagement from you. Let me also use this opportunity to appreciate all honest and sincere Officers of the Nigerian Security Agencies: your work just like the Teacher, the Medical Doctor, are duties unto humanity, which is sufficiently rewardable by God and nature.

AN OPEN LETTER TO GOVERNORS RAUF AREGBESOLA AND ISIAKA ABIOLA AJIMOBI
LAUTECH CRISIS: A MOCKERY OF CHIEF LADOKE AKINTOLA
Your excellency Sirs! There is a Yoruba idiomatic postulation that Says: 'ti ko ba nii di,obinrin kii je kumolu'(no smoke without fire). When a child decides to greet his father by dragging his father's beard, it means something is wrong somewhere. It is either the child is not properly trained or the father called for it through his verbal or kinetic gestures. We are in a society where we are made to believe that elders don't lie. Even ,elders are always right. I know you will agree with me that dividends of democracy mean different thing to different people. To a farmer, democracy means empowerment of farmers. To a traveler or motorist, it means good roads ,affordable and easy access to PMS. To a civil servant, it means payment and increment of salaries as at when due. In fact , to the jobless, it means employment. Sirs, to students, it means quality and affordable education, bursaries and scholarship. Before one can be a student, one must have a teacher and before one can be a teacher, one must have at least a student. The ongoing puppet drama at Ladoke Akintola University is fast becoming unbecoming, painful and crestfallen. In fact, It is a show of negligence in paralinguistic letters. It could be likened to deliberate wickedness and executive carelessness. In a sane society, such a thing would be called insecurity of the future.
The news of the reopening of Ladoke Akintola University for academic activities to commence was received by the students of the university with great enthusiasm, sincere happiness and smiles of fulfilment. They even rained encomiums on the characters who brought the smiles on their faces. They packed their books and traveled down to the campus in their thousands all to observe their academic rituals. Another dividend of democracy dangling in their palms. Alas! The news turns to a lie! Lautech turns to the only university without lecturers, students are now wandering like a Fulani cow. This is sad! This is unscrupulous, this is excruciating , this is crestfalen! This is a mockery of our revered Chief Ladoke Akintola. How would a university with thousands of students without any lecturer be named after him. Could this be a deliberate attempt to ridicule the heroic deeds of Chief Ladoke Akintola? Or a calculated design to punish the innocent students of Ladoke Akintola University ? Why should their future pay for it?
The two Governors and visitors to the university are hereby enjoined to as a matter of urgency, necessity, and duty, seek to the resumption of academic activities in Ladoke Akintola University before 14 days.Failure to see to the commencement of academic activities in LAUTECH before I4 days, would make the two Governors to face a protest by Nigerian students whose skins has grown against any form of negativity and deliberate wickedness.Nigerian students will protest against the mockery of the name of our revered Chief Ladoke Akintola by the two Governors and also protest against the insecurity of their future in a school named after a hero.
