GISTMORE.COM Parents of a five-year-old boy, Opeyemi Oke, have yet to come to terms with the reality of the death of their only child. Opeyemi, a kindergarten pupil, was found dead inside a well dug near an uncompleted building in Osere, Agbado area of Ogun State, where he lived with her mother and grandmother. Saturday PUNCH learnt that Opeyemi had gone missing around 9am on Sunday after he was dressed up by his grandmother. The grandmother together with residents was said to have searched round the community for him to no avail. It was gathered that the incident was reported to the baale (the traditional leader) of the community who also sent a search party to look for the kid. After their efforts proved abortive, the case was reported at the Agbado Police Station by the family. Our correspondent was told that during another round of search on Wednesday, a resident observed “a floating object” in the well, which is a few metres away from the deceased’s grandmother’s compound. He reportedly raised the alarm and the police were alerted to the discovery. The grandmother, Mrs. Olayide Titiloye, said “the object” turned out to be Opeyemi’s corpse when it was eventually recovered from the well. She said, “I cooked for him and bathed him that morning. When he finished eating, I dressed him up and he went outside to play. After a while, I looked around the compound but I could not find him. I also checked our neighbours’ houses, thinking he might be playing there. “People joined me to look for him around the community, yet we did not find him. We later reported the incident to the baale and the police. To our surprise, we found his corpse in a well at an uncompleted building not far from our house. The well was not covered.” The grandfather of the deceased, Mr. Olabanji Titiloye, stated the owner of the uncompleted building vacated the property about two months ago, adding that the well was dug along a path that people usually pass through. “The house belongs to one Niyi. He completed an apartment in the building and was living there. But about two months ago, he relocated from the community. The incident would have been averted if the well was covered. It was along the pathway. However, we have accepted it as the will of God,” he added. Opeyemi’s father, Segun Oke, a bricklayer, said he was at work on Wednesday when his brother called him on the telephone about his son’s death. Segun was in tears while he described Opeyemi as an agile, smart boy, adding that it was painful to learn that his son was dead. “I last saw him in March. I was not informed that he was missing. It was very painful to let it go, but there is nothing I can do. I am not married yet; he was my only child. I love him so much. He was very active and smart,” he added. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, blamed the incident on the negligence of the owner of the well, adding that the police had launched a manhunt for him. He said, “The police are looking for the owner of the well. It was his negligence that led to the death of the boy. The tragedy would have been averted if he had covered the well. He will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.” BY GISTMORE - http://gistmore.com/missing-five-year-old-boy-found-dead-inside-neighbours-well Lalasticlala

GISTMORE.COM The United Nations has said that a huge ransom was paid to Boko Haram for the release of the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls in March 2018. The UN report stated that ransom from abductions, donations from charity groups and the cash economy were fuelling the bloody activities of the Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in the Lake Chad Basin region. These were contained in the 22nd Report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, pursuant to Resolution 2368 (2017) concerning Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and associated individuals and entities. The report said the number of doctrinally based non-governmental organisations sending funds to local terrorist groups was growing, and member states were concerned that radicalisation was increasing the threat level in the Sahel. The report, which was submitted to the Security Council Committee, said, “Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province have had a similar impact in their areas of control, including the Lake Chad basin. “The predominance in the region of the cash economy, without controls, is conducive to terrorist groups funded by extortion, charitable donations, smuggling, remittances and kidnapping.” It added, “In Nigeria, 111 schoolgirls from the town of Dapchi were kidnapped on 18 February, 2018, and released by ISWAP on 21 March in exchange for a large ransom payment.” The report was signed by the Coordinator, Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, Edmund Fitton-Brown, and Chair, Security Council Committee, Kairat Umarov. The UN Security Council committee on al Qaeda sanctions blacklisted and imposed sanctions on the Islamist militant group Boko Haram in 2014 after the insurgents kidnapped more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls. The designation, which came into effect after no objections were raised by the Security Council’s 15 members, subjected Boko Haram to the UN sanctions, including an arms embargo, asset freeze and travel ban. The UN Security Council had last week said it remained concerned about the security and humanitarian situation caused by the Boko Haram terrorists and other armed groups in Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad. The 15-member body in a presidential statement regretted that Central African countries were beset by ongoing terrorist activities, instability and the effects of climate change, and asked Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to review the work of the UN Regional Office for Central Africa and recommend areas for improvement. It said, “The Security Council strongly condemns all terrorist attacks carried out in the region, including those perpetrated by Boko Haram and the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has insisted that it did not pay any ransom to secure the release of the Dapchi girls. In a statement issued in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Thursday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, challenged anyone who had any evidence of payment to publish such “It is not enough to say that Nigeria paid a ransom, little or huge. There must be a conclusive evidence to support such a claim. Without that, the claim remains what it is: a mere conjecture,’’ the minister said. GISTMORE.COM A driver, Abuchi Okpara, has been arrested by the police for allegedly hitting an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Ogunmeru Obafemi, in the Igando area of Lagos State. Okpara, who allegedly fled to Ghana after the incident, was apprehended by his boss, the General Manager of King Solomon Chariots Transportation, Johnson Ogbonnaya. A statement on Tuesday by the LASTMA Public Affairs Officer, Mahmud Hassan, said Ogbonnaya went to Ghana to bring down the suspect to face justice. Okpara allegedly hit Obafemi on August 7, 2018, while attempting to evade arrest after violating the state traffic law. “The offender was driving a Ghana-bound Nigeria commercial vehicle with the number plate, KJA 633 XT; he dropped passengers at an undesignated spot at Igando. “The driver’s failure to obey Ogunmeru’s directive and desperate manoeuvring to evade arrest led to Okpara running his vehicle over the traffic official,” Hassan said. The LASTMA spokesperson noted that the official was rushed to the Igando General Hospital from where he was transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. Hassan said the driver had been arraigned before an Igando Magistrates’ Court and remanded in the Kirikiri prison. The LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olawale Musa, said the trend of attacks on traffic officials by some motorists was of great concern to the government. GistMore.com A motorway bridge has collapsed in the northwest Italian city of Genoa and fire brigade sources said 35 people were believed killed as vehicles plummeted to the ground, British Broadcasting Corporation reported. Dramatic video footage captured the moment of the disaster when one of the huge supporting towers crashed down during torrential rain. Vehicles and debris fell 45m (148ft) on to rail tracks, buildings and a river. The official death toll was given as 22 on Tuesday evening by the Governor of Liguria region, Giovanni Toti, but he warned the number would “certainly rise significantly.” Fire brigade sources told Ansa that 35 people were dead and 12 missing. Searches for people trapped in the rubble are expected to go into the night. Fears that other parts of the bridge might fall had prompted the evacuation of buildings in the area, a rescuer told Italy’s Ansa news agency. Interior Minister Matteo Salvini promised that anyone found to be responsible for the bridge collapse would be held to account. “I have crossed that bridge hundreds of times,” he said. “Now, as an Italian citizen, I will do everything to get the names and surnames of the managers responsible, past and present, because it is unacceptable to die like that in Italy.” A representative of the motorway’s operator, Autostrade, told Reuters there had been “no reason to consider the bridge was dangerous”. “We saw lightning strike the bridge,” eyewitness Pietro M all’Asa, was quoted as saying by Ansa. The accident grounded traffic, leaving commuters stranded for hours as the Federal Road Safety Corps personnel and other security operatives battled to clear the road. Our correspondent learnt that the crash, which occurred about 100 metres after the Karu Bridge around 9.20pm, affected 12 cars, one bus and two trucks. The FRSC Corps Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, attributed the auto crash to overloading and brakes failure, adding that three cars left the scene with minor dents. He explained that six persons – four males and two females – were injured and taken to Nyanya General Hospital, but a male victim died at Wuse General Hospital where he was taken alongside a female victim. According to the FRSC’s preliminary report on the accident, the brand of vehicles damaged during the accident included Toyota Camry, Mazda, Honda Acura SUV, Volkswagen Golf, Honda Accord, a Toyota Hiace bus, belonging to Peace Mass Transit, and a Leyland Daf truck. Besides FRSC operatives, Kazeem said the police and men of the Nigerian Army also participated in the rescue efforts.
