David Cameron chaired his final cabinet
meeting on Tuesday after six years as Britain's
prime minister, with incoming premier Theresa
May preparing to form a new government to
deliver Brexit.
May led tributes to Cameron at the meeting,

insisted the European Commission chief "can
cope" with negotiations with May, who on
Sunday warned he was about to find out how
"difficult" she can be.
On a visit to the headquarters of the governing
centre-right Conservative Party she now leads,
May issued an appeal for unity to push through
Britain's exit from the EU.
"Now, more than ever, we need to work
together, to deliver on Brexit, to build a country
that works for everyone, and to truly unite our
party and our country," she said.
She dismissed call for an early general election
to secure her own personal mandate.
"Let us redouble our efforts. And let us make
sure we put this time to good use, to build the
support we need to go to the country in four
years' time, and not just win, but win big," she
said.
Cameron announced he would step down after
leading the failed campaign for Britain to
remain in the EU, in the June 23 referendum.
Home Secretary May, the interior minister, was
declared the new Conservative leader on
Monday after junior energy minister Andrea
Leadsom, her only remaining challenger for the
post, withdrew from the contest.

May is facing questions on when she plans to
trigger Article 50 -- the formal procedure for
withdrawal from the EU -- which would set a
two-year deadline for completing exit

get his name on the leadership contest ballot.
The party's rules are ambiguous, but lawyers
for one NEC member have threatened an
immediate High Court injunction if Corbyn is

The Benue State Police Command, has refuted
media reports that 81 persons were killed by
suspected Fulani Herdsmen between May 30
and June 20, 2016, in Logo and Ukums Local
government areas of the state, among others.

In a statement by the command's
spokesperson, ASP Moses Yamu, via the Force
Headquarter's Facebook page on Tuesday, the
Police said it witnessed only 22 deaths and
not 81.
The statement read: "The attention of the
Benue State Police Command has been drawn
to a publication on page 8 of the a national
newspaper (not Vanguard), dated July 11,
2016, tagged "Herdmen kill 81 in Benue." The
Command wishes to state that the reports was
a gross misrepresentation of the true facts on
ground in the state.
"For purposes of clarity, the Benue State
command witnessed incidents of herdsmen
attacks on some communities in the state
including: Logo and Ukum LGAs where we
recorded 22 deaths between May 30 and June
20, 2016.
"Further breakdown of the incidents and
casualties recorded is enunciated as follows:
On 30/5/2016, Tse Aondo and Tse Ankyou
communities in Ukum LGA were attacked,
where seven persons were killed.
"On 21/6/2016, Vaase community of Ukum
LGA attacked and four persons killed.
"On 17/6/2016, Mbachom community in the
Turan council ward and Tse Gabo village, in
the Nenzev council ward, were attacked and
one and six persons killed respectively.
"On 20/6/2016, Anyiin community was
attacked and four persons killed.
"The total number of deaths recorded during
the period, was 22 persons and not 81 as
reported."
Adding, Yamu, said: "Meanwhile, in order to
quickly stem the tide of such incidents in the
affected areas and indeed, other perceived
volatile locations in the state, Mobile
Policemen have been fully deployed to
effectively checkmate these excesses.
"The Commissioner of Police Benue State,
assures members of the general public and the
good people of Benue State of her renewed
efforts in crime fighting and appeals to all
citizens to remain calm and report suspicious
persons or objects to the Police.

The National Leader of the ruling All Progressives
Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, who doubles as the
Publisher of the Nation’s Newspaper, has taken a
swipe at President Muhammadu Buhari’s perceived
lopsidedness, especially in the recent composition
of the Board of the Nigeria National Petroleum
Corporation, NNPC.
In the Nation’s editorial, dated July 12, with the title
“Kachikwu Fate,’’ Tinubu, maintained that the
deliberate removal of Ibe Kachikwu as the Group
Managing Director, GMD, of the NNPC, coupled with
the dominance of the “northern mafias’’ in the
board, might generate into ethnic crisis.
Before now, a Niger Delta advocacy group, had
argued that the removal of Kachikwu, as the GMD
of the NNPC, was a disservice to the people of the
oil rich region.
In a press statement by its President, Nelly Emma;
Secretary, John Sailor and Public Relations Officer,
Stanley Mukoro, the group said the sudden removal
of Kachikwu, was an unfair treatment, not only to
the hard-working technocrats, but to the entire
people of the neglected oil rich Niger Delta Region.
“The appointment of Baru by the President, is not in
the best interest of the nation, but to satisfy the
interest of the North,” the statement had said.
While condemning Buhari’s action, Tinubu said:
“The president appointed a new board for the
NNPC… That decision defrocks Ibe Kachikwu of that
position, which leaves him as the Minister of State
for Petroleum.
“First, Baru’s replacement of Kachikwu, implies that
Kachikwu would not only run the NNPC behemoth,
but will now only act on the behest of the President,
who doubles as Petroleum Minister’’.
Adding, he said: Some analysts have expressed the
worry that since Baru will report to the President,
Kachikwu’s position runs the risk of being sinecure.
The position of Minister of State has tended to be
sinecure, because it often exists as pork and to
satisfy appetites for ethnic, religious and political
inclusion, rather than need.
‘’What worried the Nigerian society more, was the
skewed nature of the board. Of the six names on
the board, only one is regarded as belonging to the
oil-producing area of the Niger Delta. That name is
Dr. Thomas John. The others are either from the
southwest or the north. In fact, if we add the
managing director, it is a northern affair.
‘’Since the days of Adako Boro, the region has not
muted its outcry for its residents to enjoy the oil
that comes from the bowel of their earth. Granted
that the governments of the region, whether state or
local governments, or even interventions like the
Niger Delta Development Commission, have also
sharply fallen short of local expectations, the
Federal Government ought not to compound it”.
In conclusion, Tinubu stated: “The region suffers,
for most part, from collusion between oil firms and
the political elites in Abuj,a to determine the fates
of their citizens. It is in that context that this new
raft of NNPC appointees is viewed. It is also
curious that the President could appoint Abba Kyari,
his Chief of Staff, as a member of the board.
“The nation needs to know why. Kyari’s job as the
President’s closest staff, should not only be enough
for one man, but compels him to look at all
departments of government with even judgment.”
