emmamrs54:My advice is wait until they are sworn in. The committee he is a member of will matter. |
The kebbi election defies all sound reasoning. |
olatunji21:Thats an understatement. How can you preach change and have that fellow as governor in your party. |
Alikote:Why I have no issues with APC, They messed up fielding that guy. how do you expect for example foreign direct investment to come into kebbi with such a man at the helm of affairs of the state. Hope kebbi people know what they have gotten themselves into. |
Realgana:You are wrong on kebbi. There is no way the people of that state will vote in a kleptomaniac in the person of Senator Atiku Bagudu as Governor. The people know what he did with the abacha family in Laundering almost 5billion Usd. They are not ready to give the mandate to such a man to pilfer their commonwealth. Just do a goggle search on the man and see his documented sins. The PDP candidate in the person of Major General Sarkin Yaki Bello (rtd) stands a better chance. He has a track record of performance and is from the Zuru Emirate that has never ruled the state. Bagudu is from the same zone as the present governor dakingari. |

PrinceKabir:Oga Sir, thanks for allowing me use your right up. The day is almost here. What is the situation on ground in kebbi? |
The people of kebbi state should retain PDP. Not that there are saints but to allow APC take over the state is to allow a confirmed looter, kleptomaniac and a proven conduit for the abacha family to take over the commonwealth of the state and do to it same as was done with Nigeria's wealth during the abacha years. If you think am ranting or exhibiting bad politics please do a simple search on Google for Senator Atiku Bagudu and see the indictments from all over the world from the USA, UK, Isle of Man & Liechtenstein. As recent as 2014 dude as been proven to have helped steal $700m and launder same for the Abacha family. |

Great Kebbi Citizens Say NO to a Certified Looter For The Abacha's As Your Governor Vote S. Y. Bello 4 Governor. #Kebbi2015 #SpreadTheWord |
But what is in a name like BELLO ? For us, here and right now in Kebbi, it stands for “ B rings E veryone L ong L asting O pportunities.” And for Sarkin- Yaki Bello himself, it stands for: B – B e prepared (the Boy Scout’s motto). E – E very person counts in my books. L – L ive and let live. L – L ove everyone regardless of loyalty or opposition. O – O pportunity once lost, is hardly regain. And finally, for those who are unacquainted with S.Y. Bello, please take a heed here. “ Wai rashin sani, kaza ta kwana a kan dame, bata ci ba.” The qualities of an individual that allow him or her to lead can include experience, and Barrister S.Y. Bello has served admirable, as a civilian too, at the highest level of the Federal Government (NSA/Presidency). But the most important qualities of a good leader are integrity, character, and judgment. These are the qualities we need in our next Governor. Barrister S.Y. Bello is a leader. He will lead kebbi State well. Yes, Bello’s policies are pragmatic, visionary, and tough. He understands the needs for leadership in confronting many of the challenges ahead, first and foremost defending the safety and security of all Kebbians. No other candidate can possibly measure up close to him in this regard, at this point in time. Without peace, there cannot be development. Let’s all seize this moment. It’s time for leadership with a fresh perspective for a changing world - for a POTENTIAL Governor who understands the unconventional challenges we face and who can lead us to overcome them. As governor, S.Y. Bello will turn the page on the failed ideology and tired thinking of our politics of the past, the politics of tearing each other apart; instead he offers a pragmatic, smart, and principled strategy, bold and specific ideas, that carries EVERYONE along to achieve long lasting security and opportunity for all of us. He is not going to face these challenges alone, no one can. He will use the Kebbi people’s quintessential mix of optimism, dynamism, and determination to help us meet this moment. Yes, we need a leader who can inspire us, unite us around the principles that we share and rally us to a common purpose. As Governor, Barrister Sarkin-Yaki Bello will provide that leadership. And looking to the generations to come, he will prepare our state to lead the industries of tomorrow, by turning the state into a leader in areas like tourism, (acquiring Internally Generated Revenue), and in investment in science, technology and infrastructure, instead of relying mainly on the Federal Government’s Allocations. The choices we have in this coming election, 2015, are glaringly clear; moribund ideas that keep us stagnated or fresh perspectives in politics that move us forward. Working together, Kebbi State is unstoppable, with BELLO as our next Governor. Long live Kebbi State! |
BARRISTER S.Y. BELLO AND FOREIGN RELATIONS: There is no society in history that striped successfully without embracing, among other things, novel/foreign ideas. In other words, any society that does not welcome visitors or new ideas will die a natural death. We are living through an age of fundamental economic transformation. Technology has changed the way we live and the way the world does business. Industries can move to any place on the globe with potential, Internet connection and able and willing workers. Kebbi children will grow up facing competition not just from other states in Nigeria, but also from other African countries, or even Beijing and Bangalore. There are some who believe that we must try to turn back the clock on this new world. Some may even suggest that we build a fortress around us to stop foreign ideas from coming into our states, and rely on our almost non-existent industries. S.Y. Bello disagrees. Not only is it impossible to turn back the tide of globalization, but efforts to do so can make us worse off. Rather than fear the future, we must embrace it. S.Y. has no doubt that Kebbi state can compete - and succeed - in this twenty-first century, using the dynamism, determination, and innovation of the Kebbi people. But at critical moments of transition like this one, success will depend on leadership that moves the state forward with confidence and a common purpose; that is the kind of leadership S.Y. intends to provide as Governor of Kebbi State, come 2015, God–willing. This agenda starts with education. Every economist agrees that in this digital age, a highly educated and skilled workforce will be the key not only to individual opportunity, but to the overall success of our economy as well. Bello cannot be satisfied until every child in Kebbi state has the same chances for a good education that we want for our own children. This is altruism at its best. Bello may have lived for many years out of Kebbi, but the Kebbi ideas have never left him. He thinks global but acts local. Most of Bello’s ideas written on these pages have always been with him, but before now, he was expecting them to be advanced by somebody too. I was privileged to know this while he was representing us at Washington, D.C, as a defence attaché. S.Y.’s international connections are vast and good omen for Kebbi state. Be rest-assured that, as Governor, he will bring foreign direct investments to Kebbi State. He will create an enabling environment devoid of insecurity, corruption, and red tape for international and multinational companies to invest, for our mutual benefits. Argungu, Kamba, Jega, Zuru and Yauri have already been singled out for special projects to do with tourism, free trade zone, commercial capital of the state, agricultural and fishery centres respectively, while Birnin-Kebbi, as the state’s capital, needs to answer its name, Dubai comes to mind. Sceptics, pessimists and doubters may laugh at these ambitious ideas, but that was how Dubai started. Many did not give their “dream” a chance. Birnin-Kebbi must be the best and a window to Kebbi State, with Bello as Governor. All states (capitals) created since 1991, in Nigeria, need to copy and follow the coming Birnin-Kebbi model of what a state capital should be and look-like, God-willing. No Region of Kebbi state will be left behind in developmental aspects as well. WE WILL NOT DEPEND ENTIRELY ON FEDERAL ALLOCATIONS TO DEVELOP OUR STATE; INSTEAD, WE WILL MAINLY DEPEND ON INTERNALLY GENERATED REVENUE. Borrowing from the Kenyan example, with Argungu Fishing Festival, and other innovative ideas , Bello is fully convinced that Kebbi state can become a tourist Mecca, year round , instead of seasonal, as is the case today. If done well, the internally generated revenue from tourism alone can relieve our state from depending mainly on the Federal Government’s Allocations. The limit is your imagination! Argungu town, and indeed Kebbi State, more than deserve this initiative. In fact, it is long overdue. Kamba happens to be a border town with vast potentials, if properly harnessed. As Governor, Bello will create an international free trade zone in Kamba . With proximity to Niger and Benin republics, Kamba, at the minimum, with our French speaking neighbours, will find a haven next door for Nigerians and other Africans, to invest. With adequate security, infrastructure, enabling environment, and skilled workforce in place, companies from other countries may follow. Companies will operate tax-free for a number of years, as incentive. To further reap the benefits of this initiative, French will be a required learning (language) in our schools, giving our children bilingual education. And as china is poised and projected to become the number one largest economy in the world in the coming years, it behoves us to be proactive and give our children a head start in learning Mandarin Chinese , at least as a language option. Then, Kebbi state’s students will be able to communicate with over a billion people by just learning one language - Chinese. |
If/when the history of Kebbi State is written in about a decade from now, God-willing, S.Y. Bello will be remembered as the Chief Executive of the state, who was instrumental in seriously transforming Kebbi from semi- agrarian economy into an industrial one; an economy that provided an enabling environment for EVERYONE to prosper and achieve upward mobility. When you talk to this humble man, he will tell you and maintains that his performance, if elected, would only be a modest addition to the achievements recorded by the current administration of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Saidu Usman Nasamu Dakingari, his good friend. Those who are acquainted with Sarkin-Yaki’s ethics know that the workaholic Sarkin-Yaki, once elected, would not just relaxed and basked in the euphoria over the victory or achievements recorded by his predecessor, or consider the projects executed by Dakingari as enough for the state and therefore simply sit there to enjoy the fruits of the current leader’s labour. No, he will not do that. What he will do instead, would be to use the records of the current administration to serve as a standard upon which he must improve. He knows, first hand, during his military service, how prudent management of even scarce resources can bring smiles on the faces of the people he served. He believes that leadership is a burden. So, only those who are committed and prepared for it should be voted into public office. The Kebbi people I was opportune to interact and talk with know that government can’t solve all our problems, and they don’t expect it to. They believe in personal responsibility and hard work. But they also believe in fairness, opportunity and responsibilities we have to one another. They believe in a state where good jobs are there for the willing, where hard work is rewarded. In a globalized world that has changed dramatically over the last few decades, forging this kind of future will not be easy. It will require new ways of thinking and a new spirit of cooperation. We’ll need the kind of politics and policies in our state of Kebbi that fully reflect the best values of our fathers’ past. It won’t be easy. It won’t happen overnight. But Sarkin-Yaki Bello is running for Governor because he believes that it’s possible. I believe that if we seize this moment (with this accomplished professional, visionary and patriotic statesman as our choice) to look beyond our differences and focus on the challenges that affect us all, we can meet them. It’s our choice. We can choose to do nothing about unemployment, or we can decide that we’ll go for a candidate with a vision and an economic policy that encourages growth and job creation in the whole state. We can allow ourselves to stay mired in debate about how to move forward on education, or we can go for a candidate who believes that true progress on education will require both more resources and serious reform. When it comes to education issue, S.Y. Bello strongly believes in investing in early-childhood education, the way it used to be when he was at Makerar Gandu primary school in Birnin-Kebbi, back in the days. He believes in recruiting qualified teachers for our schools, paying more and expecting more from the teachers, in return. He is also a firmed believer in free education for all, to give equal opportunity to the less privileged. These are just a few choices we face in this coming election, in 2015. We faced hard days and our share of failures before, but Sarki-Yaki believes that no matter how great the challenge or how difficult the circumstances, you can achieve anything if you’re willing to work for it, and fight for it, and above all believe in it. He also believes that the only way to truly bring about the future we seek is if we’re willing to work together as one state and one people. That is our task in the months and years ahead. |
The Man, Sarkin-Yaki Bello! By Kabir Soja; a.k.a. Prince Kabir Abubakar: Every so often, there are moments that define a generation. For our parents, it was the political time of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, when Arewa (Northern Region of Nigeria) offered unrivalled opportunity and mobility for the middle class. About a decade after the demise of Sir Ahmadu Bello, of blessed memory, it was again a time of hope and optimism during the administration of the then Military Governor of former Sokoto State, Colonel Umaru Mohammed. Few years later came along the civilian administration of the charismatic Governor, Shehu Kangiwa, at a time when regions, Emirates and tribes did not define a potential leader, or determine the leader’s acceptance by the people. Then, people, young and old, male and female, all across the former Sokoto State rallied around whomever they believed had the qualifications, vision and resolve to carry the whole state forward for its comprehensive development. Our generation now faces its own defining moments/challenges like: - The disappearance of the middle class - Youths unemployment - Emiratism - General insecurity - Chronic poverty - Deterioration of education system - Digital divide - Moral decadence - Apathy, etc. We need to make our choices. This is a moment of great challenge and even greater opportunity. Experience has shown that people are generally disillusioned with politicians. This disillusionment with politics is not limited to any one party or group of people. It is shared by people from all works of life who are tired of being disappointed by the partisanship and petty politics that stop us from fully solving challenges like education, unemployment, health care, etc, year after year. Kebbians, irrespective of their regions, zones or Emirates now understand that at this moment in the history of our great state, we just can’t afford to keep doing some of what we’ve been doing that didn’t work, the same way. They are ready to come together and choose a future for the state. This election, in 2015, offers that choice. And this write-up is about one of those candidates for Governor that I believe has the vision, mission and the resolve to lead our state forward for a holistic development. His vision is rooted in the values that have made him an exceptional, patriotic statesman for the whole nation at large. He believes in merit, fairness and opportunity for all. In three simple words, his mantra can easily be stated as INTEGRITY, HARD WORK and COMPASSION. He is Sarkin-Yaki Bello. B.E.L.L.O. stands for "Bring Everyone Long Lasting Opportunities," in Kebbi State as a whole. |
TO THE GOOD PEOPLE OF KEBBI STATE: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Dear friends, I want to use this medium to acknowledge the receipt of your well-wishes and appreciate the invaluable love, prayers and outpouring of goodwill messages sent to me, as I venture into the political arena of the our dear State of Kebbi. Words fail me in expressing how much I was touched by your all-important and inspiring messages plus the innumerable friend requests being received from you, the good people of Kebbi State, and beyond. I want to assure you of my heartfelt gratitude for all sorts of advices, supports and encouragements on matters of great relevance to the immediate political agenda, received from all and sundry of Kebbi. I will continuously be appreciated. Thanks and God bless you all. Signed: Major General Sarkin-Yaki Bello (Rtd), OON. ADVANCE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY TO EVERYONE: Sarkin-Yaki Bello understands that the greatness of any state results from the imaginations, energy and contributions of all of its peoples, not just the privileged few. If Kebbi State is to meet the enormous challenges that lie ahead, we must ensure that all Kebbi indigenes can fully participate in creating the state of our dream, and continue to contribute to its greatness. Some time in the past, decisions such as in employment and promotion were based solely on political loyalty, favouritism, nepotism, etc, with insufficient regard for competence and experience. For career positions in particular, this was a retrogressive idea . S.Y. Bello will require that appointees possess relevant professional qualifications and experience related to the core mission of all the Departments, Ministries and Agencies for which they are nominated, thereby ensuring integrity and competence in the execution of their missions. As for the unemployed youths of ALL the regions of Kebbi State, they can be rest assured that S.Y. Bello as the Executive Governor would create an enabling environment for them to find productive employment to rebuild their lives. And for those who need an opportunity to resume or advance their education (home or abroad), the sky will be their limits, God-willing. S.Y. Bello is very comfortable with modern technology. To do the above, he will put government data online, creating a centralized database and user-friendly search engine accessible to all. These can be used to post CVs online for the various positions to be advertised by the government to give a levelled playing field and equal opportunity to ALL applicants. OPEN AND TRANSPARENT As Governor, S.Y. Bello will have an open-door policy. He believes that, in a democracy, it shouldn’t be just the loyalists, the wealthy, and the well- connected that should have access and influence. The price of access and influence should be nothing more than your voice and your vote. Our politics should ensure that the hopes and concerns of an average Kebbian speak as loud as that of any other Kebbian. As such, S.Y. Bello, as Governor, will have PERIODIC engagements with the people via Kebbi-TV (people sending questions by phone on the live programme, with him). Equally, he will engage people live on the ground in “town-hall” meeting style. He will use his position, to be a motivational speaker, to motivate Kebbi people to action, towards common goals, for our mutual benefits, using leadership by example. Allah ya nuna mana, amen. FREEDOM OF SPEECH: No one can prevent people from speaking their minds, even if it involves criticism of the government. What is required though is maintaining self- discipline in what one says to purify the atmosphere of free speech. Whoever is going to speak should consider not only the implications, but also its overall purpose for the societies; otherwise it would be best to hold his peace. People should use their freedom of speech for constructive and beneficial purposes such as cementing social relations and affecting reconciliation. Those who sow discord among the people, cause injury to other people’s reputation, or spread evil and scandal in the society are simply evil-doers. Scandal mongers, alarmists, rumour spreaders are counter-productive to the society at large . People should exercise restraint and a sense of responsibility in their criticisms as well as in their public utterances, to promote the general well- being of the society. While giving truthful counsel (“nasiha”) appears to be right, in reality it can sometimes serve as a means of humiliation for those who are supposedly being counseled. In the event, the purpose of “nasiha” - which is to bring benefit to all concerned and to establish mutual love - is defeated. If “nasiha” is given in private, it will have the effect of generating love among people, and bringing about good. To insist on making “nasiha” public is a sign of evil motives and immodesty. We should inveigh against those who speak of others in terms which are deceitful. Had we concerned ourselves with our own PERSONAL faults, we would not have had the allowance to look at the PERSONAL faults of others; as every human being has got his or her own weaknesses. Let's keep our talks/ debates on ideas/policies . FOR THE RECORD: Every Kebbian has the right to demand to know why a candidate should come out aspiring to be a gubernatorial aspirant for the state. It’s no secret that in the current democratic dispensation, in our state in particular, there are a lot of competent people (professionals, intellectuals, technocrats, etc) missing in the action. The simple explanation for this phenomenon is that when the politics of this third republic started, many potentially serious minded and politically competent people kept aloof, out of politics, due to skepticism of the enduring nature of politics, then, in Nigeria; precisely due to the frequent military intervention in the political process, vis-à-vis military coups. Many were not willing to “waste” their time and resources in politics only to be banned when the “right candidates” do not emerge as winners after an election. This factor left the political terrain (then) vacant and wide-opened for mainly the jobless, retirees, those who were willing to risk taking politics as an investment, etc. These were mainly people with not much to lose, even if the military were to ban the political process. Now, to many people’s surprise the political process of the third republic endures beyond imagination. So, some intellectuals, professionals, and the likes are willing to stage a comeback into politics. One other incentive of this come back cannot be unconnected to the way and manner it now seems politics pays off handsomely, economically. Many chief executives have gone from rags to riches, during their tenure(s). Among the many motivations candidates now have for going into politics (particular running for Governor) is to pursue power, money, fame, to redeem themselves of their past records , retaliation of some real or perceived wrongs, self-actualization, and, of course, economic development for the state. What makes this a problem is that most of our potential candidates desire this supreme office themselves, labouring consciously and assiduously to obtain it. Sultan Muhammad Bello, in his book, “Usul al-Siyasa” (on politics) stated that, “if a ruler is not somewhat removed from the love of leadership and desire of sovereignty for itself, one may fear that he is infatuated with himself and will not deal justly with his subject” - in short, craving for this office is most likely to result in oppression and self- aggrandizement. Sultan Bello went on to say, “therefore whoever we see striving too hard to get it, more especially if he asked for it, we know for sure that he does not deserve it. And whoever entrusts such a person with authority has committed oppression, for he has put something where it did not deserve to be.” This brings me to the reason for this write–up. All we Kebbi people love our great state dearly. We want the best for Kebbi. When it comes to the choice of the next chief executive of our state, it is a daunting task. As for me, I’m privileged to know a potential candidate for Governor that meets the criteria one looks for in a leader: His name is Sarkin-Yaki Bello (S.Y. Bello). Despite his proven qualities for leadership, when I learned that S.Y. may come out to run for Governor of our state, I met him at the Abuja National Mosque attending a weeding Fatiha and asked him to tell me his reason for deciding to contest. His answer was very telling. He said , “Kabiru, I never thought of running for Governor, after retirement. If some Kebbi State’s stakeholders had come to me and asked me to recommend someone I believe could be a good material for our state as a chief executive, I would have gladly recommended some people. And I would not have included my very self in that list.” I believed him! (Sorry General, I know that was supposed to be for my own consumption only). He went on to say, “People came to me, I won’t tell you who, as it is confidential, and gave me their reasons and asked me to run. I took time to powder over their reasons and concluded that it would be selfish of me to turn them down, considering the power of their arguments.” I said to him that I concur. I believe S.Y., not only because he had never lied to me in the course of the over 20-year interactions we had, but more so because, looking back at S.Y.’s professional career, he had never, for once, asked to be appointed/posted to a position or an office. He had always been chosen to lead one thing or the other, strictly based on his competency and suitability. S.Y. Bello headed various operational commands (home and abroad). Be it a U.N. mission (Yugoslavia), Military Assistant (Chief of Army Staff), Defence Attaché (USA), Join Task Force (Niger-Delta), G.O.C. (Enugu), NSA/Presidency; S.Y. had ALWAYS been asked to be there, his entire life. He had ALWAYS been called upon to take leadership positions, with no “long-leg” in play. Accordingly, when he stated what seems to be a tradition for him and the obvious to me, I didn’t hesitate to concur. Great Kebbi Say NO to a Certified Looter, Kleptomaniac & Banker To The Abacha's As Your Governor Vote S. Y. Bello 4 Governor. #Kebbi2015 |
In a few days time the electorate MAY Mistakenly vote in one of the most corrupt politicians in as the Governor of Kebbi State in the person of Senator Atiku Bagudu of the All Peoples Congress. Bellow is evidence already in public domain. Aziri Okoro: This is great, he has finally seen the night, he is dumping the sinking ship at last. After Abacha died in 1998, the interim military government that followed started an investigation into misuse of state funds. Mohammed Abacha and Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, his business manager, returned $750 million. There was no criminal prosecution. Bagudu moved to the USA in 2000, and in 2003 was detained there for six months on charges of financial misdeeds during the Abacha era. He was released in November 2003 on condition that he repaid about $300 million to the Federal Government of Nigeria. The administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo apparently made a deal to recover part of the money in return for dropping prosecution and leaving the remainder with the family. Bagudu was Chairman of Phil Nugent Nigeria Ltd. from 2004 until December 2005. He was Abacha’s conduit through whom passed most of the $4-5 billion Abacha was reputed to have stolen. Considering how much money Bagudu made from that administration, he had lots of cash to spend and win the senatorial election. He won overwhelmingly, polling 285,578 votes out of the 310,800 total votes cast. The Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, candidate, Alhaji Sambo Aliyu, who scored 8,377, emerged a very distant second, while 16 other candidates got inconsequential votes. The ANPP boycotted that election. Let’s share some more details of Bagudu’s role in the Abacha government. According to a report by a news magazine, The News: He had set up Morgan Procurement Corporation and Mecosta Securities which, as the press put it, “were involved in the illegal transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars from the Nigerian state to the Abacha family.” According to other reports, Mohammed Abacha and Bagudu siphoned $66m from the $111m purchase of vaccines from the French firm Pasteur Merieux. Senator Bagudu is also the Chairman of the committee that was set up to investigate the NIS recruitment scandal which killed tens of youths across Nigeria. With such a character placed in charge of the NIS recruitment investigation, does anyone have any hope that a thorough job will ever be be done? Does Bagudu have any moral right to stand among decent members of the society to perform such a function not to talk of contesting an election? Nigerian voters in Kebbi State shine your eyes. Kebbi 2015: Dakingari’s legacy and friendly enemies within By Max Gbanite maxgbanite@yahoo.com There are image-damagers who very often masquerade as the voice of concerned party foot soldiers or defenders of party discipline and virtues, which in their bid to score cheap political points bring their leaders to ridicule; and, this is exactly the manner-of-missiles directed at His Excellency, Alhaji Saidu Dakingari, the Executive Governor of kebbi State, by friendly- enemies within his party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The same enemies are clawing on straws in a futile attempt to foil the consolidation of the positive legacy the governor has bequeathed to the state. In circumstances like this, men endowed with sense of impartiality cannot stand aloof and watch the destruction of one hard working individual. The bone of contention is the PDP’s 2015 gubernatorial ticket in the state; and the apparent popularity of Gen. S Y Bello (Rtd.), which is scarring the living day light out of his opponents in the race. Instead of engaging in a genuine campaign to strategize and position their preferred candidates for possible victory, they resort to name callings and character assassination to win the sympathy of kebbi State PDP members; unfortunately for them, Peoples Democratic Party in Kebbi is known for carrying-out unhindered scrutiny of potential aspirants for any position. In a bid to disorganize the party in the state and hand over the structures to the opposition All progressive Congress (APC), one Ibrahim D Usman has assumed the mouthpiece of the internal opposition to Gov. Dakingari. Instead of resolving minor disagreements within the available party structures, he preferred the pages of the newspaper to damage the party; damage the governor; and damage Gen. S.Y. Bello; this, indeed, is a misadventure taken too far. In a widely publicized piece on the DailyTrust newspaper, September 14, 2014, Ibrahim D Usman exhibited the huge jitters that have cascaded the internal opposition within the party. He derogatorily made reference to the gubernatorial ambition of Gen. Bello without recourse to the unalloyed-nation-building credentials the same Bell has under his belt. Instead of supporting Gov. Dakingari to ensure the election of this exemplary son of kebbi State, the likes of Usman are busy pressing the destruct button to drag the state backwards. This is a case of wrecking the system if one is unable to have their way. However, they will have to contend with the determination of the performing governor and the progress consolidation agenda, and prepare to contest with Gen. Bello in the battle ahead. Again, if they are self-deluded into thinking that the duo of Bello and the governor, will chicken out and hand the party structures over to them in their bid to draw the state backward; they must be consulting with political neophytes. At this point, it is noteworthy to state that they did not even spare former Governor Muhammed Adamu Aliero in their misguided vituperation. This is not the way to move their great party forward in the state. The people of kebbi State are blessed to have Gen. Sarki Yaki Bello, as their son. This is a man of distinguished accomplishments; a Prince who dropped his princely-babanriga and all the privileges of that title to become a soldier-warrior; a true soldiers- soldier and, a first class intelligence-infantry-officer. A trained lawyer with Nigeria Bar accreditations; at the rank of captaincy, made his mark at the office of army provost, prompting his boss then, the Army provost Marshall, Major Gen. Sani Sami (now retired), to refer to him as the ‘most brilliant officer in my command”, at the time Sani Sami made that comment, he did not even know that Bello was his kinsman from Kebbi State. Today, the same Gen. Sani Sami (rtd.) is the emir of Zuru, and he cannot be one of the emir’s that is not happy with the governor’s radar-sighting of Gen. Bello as his successor. Bello went on to become a Military Attache’ to our embassy in Washington DC, while there, he delivered a paper at the Institute of World Policy, that earned him the respect and admiration of Americans, and British experts attending lectures with him; he went on to become the Military Assistant to the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Bamaiyi Rtd. (a fearless-soldier); the same Bamaiyi likes the idea of a Bello as the next governor of Kebbi, his state. Gen. Bello went on to command the Military Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta during the height of militancy- insurrection; his swift actions led many to surrender and embrace the amnesty offered by the late president, Umaru Yar’Adua; and his fair play and manner of approach in tackling the turbulences earned him the admiration of both traditional ruler’s, and the pseudo-generals commanding the various militant- terrorists during that era; and they still discuss him with awe till date. He later became the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 division. While at that division, his handling of the ‘Osisikanku’ kidnapping menace in Abia State was one of the best efforts made at subjugating kidnapping in any part of Nigeria. He did not only destroy the ‘Osisikanku’ criminal- clan but exorcised Abia State of kidnapping and other insurgency- inducing-crimes. During his tenure as commander of the Joint Task Force (JTF) and GOC of 82 nd Division of the Nigerian Army, he combined intellectualism, prudence and professionalism in ensuring that innocent Nigerians were never harmed in the course of duty, and within his area of command. The real situation in Kebbi State is that the current governor has looked around and within Kebbi State and, decided that for the good people and the state to move to the next level of transformation and industrializations, that his successor must be someone who has demonstrated enough clout within the country, and international community; and has the ability to take the developmental-foundations of his (Gov. Dakingari) to the next level. The governor knows that Kebbi state needs a person that can attract the much needed foreign investment for the farmers, a person the international community knows and trusts; and as a result, he searched thoroughly within his party; and came to the conclusion that amongst those qualified for the position, that Gen Sarki Yaki Bello best fits this calculus. The governor’s political opponents and friendly-enemies are scared that Gen. Bello will never compromise on merit if he is eventually elected by the good people of the state; but they can count on him to be a team player who will carry everybody along. For a Governor that achieved so much in the agricultural sector and a leading light of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda, ensuring the election of a successor with capacity to sustain his great landmarks will not be a misplaced priority. Is this what the detractors of the Governor referred to as “his anointing a successor?” It will be unpatriotic for the sitting Governor to overlook capable citizens of the state in his quest to entrench his positive legacy. I urge His Excellency to remain steadfast in his great mission in Kebbi State and implore the citizens to continue to extend their unalloyed support to his administration. The coach of any football team understands the abilities of his players both collectively and individually. He is in a better position to determine who to play at any position and when it is necessary for substitutions to be made. It will help the PDP team in the state to keep trusting in the wisdom of the coach and his ability to make the right decisions in the overall interest of the party. The umbrella is big enough to accommodate all discerning members of the party. One thing the party followers must appreciate is that Gen. S Y Bello is a team player, and a systems- man who will never allow any structure or power base in the party to be marginalized. His experience and training has automatically prepared him for the task ahead. The contending factions should bury the hatchet and support this illustrious son of Kebbi State. He will never betray their confidence; he is a man we respect, and Kebbi State should be commended for giving a prince like him to our military to serve our country. Submitted by: A.U. Firstly, congratulations Mr. President-elect on your historic victory in the March 28, 2015 presidential election. In your widely circulated "Covenant With Nigerians," war against corruption featured prominently. In my view there is no better way to bring your national anti-corruption strategy to life than by focusing on ending the culture of impunity, vis-a-vis corruption. A classic example of impunity comes to mind in the recent infamous forfeiture of more than $480 million in corruption proceeds (originating from Nigeria) hidden in bank accounts around the world by one of the gubernatorial candidates, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu , running in the coming guber contest in Kebbi State, April 11, 2015. As a patriotic Kebbian and Nigerian, just like you are sir, I cannot just fold my arms and look the other way when kleptocracy is involved; officials stealing from their own government treasuries at the expense of their citizens. As recently as August 6, 2014, a judgment was entered by a U.S. District Court Judge John D. Bates of the District of Columbia against the companies of the said gubernatorial candidate (Senator Bagudu), in the largest kleptocracy case ever in the history of the U.S. Department of Justice. Evidently, rather than serve his country, Senator Bagudu took undue advantage of association with the Abachas and looted millions of dollars, engaging in brazen acts of kleptocracy. With the August 6, 2014 judgment, the U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Division, denies a kleptocrat Bagudu the fruits of his crimes, and protects the U.S. financial system from money laundering. Now, it's your turn, sir, to complement the U.S. efforts by helping to extradite this criminal (hiding behind your shadow) to Washington DC to face justice, when the Interpol comes knocking soon. Kebbians, Nigerians, and indeed the world will be watching to see if your actions (this time around) are going to match your speeches about fighting impunity in high profiled corruption cases like this one. To put this case in perspective sir, the complaint against Sen. Bagudu (and others) alleged that he was the mastermind of systematically embezzling billions of dollars in public funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria on the false pretense that funds were necessary for national security. In another development, Sen. Bagudu's company also allegedly sold Nigerian government bonds at vastly inflated prices, using a criminal scheme, generating an illegal windfall of more than $282 million. Equally, extorted more than $11 million from a French company in connection with payments on government contracts. Funds involved in these schemes were allegedly laundered through the U.S. Sir, I have heard that the vice-president - elect promised to not go after those who have perpetrated corruption before your election. I pray that's not true. Nigerians expect you to go after those who stole the future of their children. Though, you should not allow this to distract you from fighting the cronic insecurity, as a priority. However, we cannot afford to let high profile looters like Sen. Bagudu to go Scot- free. They must pay if only to serve as deterrence to future thieves. Sir, as you already know, perception is very important; and first impression carries a lot of weight. At this crucial moment, please avoid making your predecessor's error. Both President Obasanjo and Jonathan were unable or unwilling to help extradite an alleged drug kingpin, Senator - elect Buriji Kashamu , to the U.S. (where he is declared wanted) to face justice. For 17 years, Senator - elect Kashamu has been wanted in the U.S. for allegedly acting as the kingpin of a drug smuggling and money laundering ring. There has been talk at times in Nigeria about extraditing him to the U.S. to face justice. But being a strong supporter of the PDP, the move always seemed unlikely. Now, Kashamu is going to be sworn in as a senator, making the possibility even more remote, unless you, sir, step up to impunity, as you promised Nigerians to do. Accordingly, Senator Bagudu (APC - Kebbi State) and Senator - elect Kashamu (PDP - Ogun State) cases ought to be your first test case to ascertain your determination to put a stop to the culture of impunity, vis-a-vis corruption in Nigeria. Sir, please make this one of your 100- days-in-office potential mission accomplishments. This will send a strong, practical and unmistakable signal to the national and international community as to where you stand today on corruption; leave no one in doubt about your zero tolerance for both corruption and impunity. Serendipity! Luckily for you sir, strong, new partners in the war against corruption. March 30, 2015, precisely two days after your historic election victory, the FBI announced the establishment of international corruption squads targeting foreign bribery and kleptocracy crimes. Special Agent, George McFachern, who heads up the international corruption unit at FBI Headquarters, explains that the squads were created to address the national and international implications of corruption. That these squads will help keep the Bureau at the forefront of U.S. and global law enforcement efforts to battle international corruption and kleptocracy. Sir, in the short term, one of my motivations for writing this open letter to you is to help inform the Kebbi State electorate to not waste its votes April 11, 2015 on Senator Bagudu in the gubernatorial contest. But, in the long term, if by accident he got the advantage of your momentum and scale through, then, you yourself will have the opportunity to prove to Nigerians that impunity has no hiding place with you, from any quarter, by helping to get him extradited to the U.S. to face justice. Sir, what better demonstration of zero tolerance for corruption can there be? I for one sir, as a Kebbian (and a U.S. citizen), in collaboration with our organization, Kebbians In The Diaspora Association (KITDA) of which I happened to be the president, am more than ready to work with you on the two cases cited in this letter, to fight impunity by finishing the work U.S. Justice Department started. I will be contacting your office in due course, as a follow up to this letter, as soon as KITDA procure the necessary documents at hand requesting for the cooperation of the Nigerian government to extradite these alleged criminals to face justice in the United States. Thank you sir. And God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria! (Prince Kabir Abubakar wrote from Maryland, USA. +14439457478) |
