1901–1937: The beginnings
Childhood

Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901 to Elias Disney, of Irish-Canadian descent, and Flora Call Disney, of German-American descent, in Chicago's Hermosa community area at 2156 N. Tripp Ave.[3][4] Walt Disney's ancestors had emigrated from Gowran, County Kilkenny in Ireland. Arundel Elias Disney, great-grandfather of Walt Disney, was born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1801 and was a descendant of Hughes and his son Robert d'Isigny, originally of France but who travelled to England with William the Conqueror in 1066.[5]. The d'Isigny name became Anglicised as Disney and the family settled in the village now known as Norton Disney, south of the city of Lincoln, in the county of Lincolnshire.

His father Elias Disney moved from Huron County, Ontario to the United States in 1878, seeking first for gold in California but finally farming with his parents near Ellis, Kansas until 1884. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad and married Flora Call on January 1, 1888 in Acron, Florida. The family moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1890,[6] where his brother Robert lived.[6] For most of his early life, Robert helped Elias financially.[6] In 1906, when Walt was four, Elias and his family moved to a farm in Marceline, Missouri,[7] where his brother Roy had recently purchased farmland.[7] While in Marceline, Disney developed his love for drawing.[8] One of their neighbors, a retired doctor named "Doc" Sherwood, paid him to draw pictures of Sherwood's horse, Rupert.[8] He also developed his love for trains in Marceline, which owed its existence to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway which ran through town. Walt would put his ear to the tracks in anticipation of the coming train.[4] Then he would look for his uncle, engineer Michael Martin, running the train.

The Disneys remained in Marceline for four years,[9] before moving to Kansas City in 1911.[10] There, Walt and his younger sister Ruth attended the Benton Grammar School where he met Walter Pfeiffer. The Pfeiffers were theatre aficionados, and introduced Walt to the world of vaudeville and motion pictures. Soon, Walt was spending more time at the Pfeiffers' than at home.[11] During this time he attended Saturday courses as a child at the Kansas City Art Institute [12]

Walter Elias "Walt" Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, entertainer, international icon and philanthropist. Disney is famous for his influence in the field of entertainment during the twentieth century. As the co-founder (with his brother Roy O. Disney) of Walt Disney Productions, Disney became one of the best-known motion picture producers in the world. The corporation he co-founded, now known as The Walt Disney Company, today has annual revenues of approximately U.S. $35 billion.

Disney is particularly noted for being a film producer and a popular showman, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. He and his staff created a number of the world's most famous fictional characters including Mickey Mouse. He received fifty-nine Academy Award nominations and won twenty-six Oscars, including a record four in one year,[2] giving him more awards and nominations than any other individual. He also won seven Emmy Awards. He is the namesake for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the United States, Japan, France, and China.

Disney died of lung cancer on December 15, 1966, a few years prior to the opening of his Walt Disney World Resort dream project in Florida.

Dramatic images have emerged of a fire in a Russian nightclub that killed more than 100 revellers and injured 130 more.
They were celebrating the eighth anniversary of the Lame Horse club in Perm, 1,100 kilometres east of Moscow, when the party went disastrously wrong. A firework ignited wickerwork covering the ceiling and walls, filling the room with toxic smoke, and sparking a panicked rush for the exit. There were more than 200 people inside when the blaze took hold. Outside, the dead and the injured littered the pavement. The Ministry for Emergencies said about half of those injured were in a serious condition, suffering the effects of smoke inhalation. One eyewitness is reported to have said many people were blocked from reaching the exit and suffocated as a result. Russia’s domestic security service said they had found no trace of explosives at the scene, and officials played down talk of terrorist involvement. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has sent three of his senior ministers to Perm to oversee the investigation. The Prosecutor General’s main detective unit has opened a criminal case over suspected breaches of health and safety regulations at the club. The blaze was the most deadly in Russia in recent years.

Happy 28th Birthday, Britney Spears!

Britney Spears starts her 28th birthday celebration with a shopping spree at the Fred Segal store in West Hollywood on Wednesday (December 2).

The pop princess was accompanied by her agent (and rumored boyfriend) Jason Trawick.

Britney and her two sons — Sean Preston, 4, Jayden James, 3 — are featured in a new photo shoot for the January 2010 issue of Elle magazine (with Lady Gaga on the cover).

In the past few years, Clay Aiken has been very busy on his birthdays. One year he helped Light Up a Christmas tree. Another year, he was performing on Broadway. In 2006, Clay gave Lynda Loveland a tour of his new home in North Carolina………well, at least the tour was on TV on his birthday. For two of Clay’s birthdays, he was performing on tour; one year in Kalamazoo, MI and once in Reading, PA.

The audience in Reading was ready to party with Clay in 2005. The audience had paper birthday hats, glow sticks and even gave Clay a huge “pointy hat” that was signed by some fans. The following video shows the fun at the end of the concert in Reading. The best part is towards the end when Clay actually wears the birthday hat.

Secret Service says president never in danger

WASHINGTON - Michaele and Tareq Salahi like a good party, an attorney who knows them said Thursday, and maybe that's why the couple from Virginia's horse country didn't look out of place at the White House state dinner for the Indian prime minister.

They were all smiles as they rubbed shoulders with Vice President Joe Biden, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty and CBS News anchor Katie Couric.

No one suspected the Salahis were a couple of brazen party crashers - and wannabe reality TV stars.

The Secret Service is looking into its security procedures after determining that the Virginia couple managed to slip into Tuesday night's event even though they were not on the guest list, agency spokesman Ed Donovan said.

Paul Morrison, a Virginia attorney who has represented the couple on other matters, said: “I know them. I'm unaware of any reason they need representation right now."

Morrison said he hasn't spoken to the Salahis since the incident but said, “I can't imagine" why they would be in legal trouble.

“They just went to a party. They didn't do anything wrong. I know they enjoy a good party. They're just good people," he said.

President Barack Obama was never in any danger because the Salahis went through the same security screening for weapons as the 300-plus people actually invited to the dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Donovan said.

Donovan confirmed the identities of the couple. The Washington Post, which first reported on their evening out, said the Salahis were well-known in the Virginia horse-country set and were being considered for the Bravo reality TV show “Real Housewives of D.C."

In an interview with CBS' “Early Show" in September, Michaele Salahi said, “President Obama has made it very accessible for anyone to visit the White House, so that's like a big thing right now." The CBS interview was part of a segment on potential candidates for “Real Housewives of D.C." but never was aired.

The Secret Service learned about the security breach Wednesday after a media inquiry prompted by the Salahis' online boasts about having attended the private event, Donovan said.

One of the many photos from the dinner posted on Michaele Salahi's Facebook page shows the couple with a smiling Biden. In other photos, they appear alone or together with Emanuel, Fenty, Couric, Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., and three Marines in their dress blues.

Donovan would not comment on whether the couple had been contacted by the Secret Service, how long they were on the White House grounds or other details of the investigation.

The Post said uninvited guests who got in could face a potential trespassing charge unless someone from inside the White House staff slipped them in.

Donovan would not comment on possible legal violations.

“They'll go through all of this and see what went wrong and fix it," Frances Townsend, who was the White House-based counterterrorism adviser for President George W. Bush, told CNN in an interview broadcast Thursday.

The agency's Office of Professional Responsibility was reviewing what occurred. An initial finding indicated that a checkpoint did not follow proper procedures to ensure the two were on the guest list, Donovan said.

“It's important to note that they went through all the security screenings - the magnetometer screening - just like all the other guests did," Donovan said.

And, he added, Obama and others under Secret Service protection had their usual security details with them.
