Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar Prof Ishaq Oloyede has said no fewer than 200 million candidates are expected to register for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME).
Prof Oloyede declared that the examination body returned N7.8 billion to the Federal Government coffers from the proceeds of examination forms sold in 2017.
He stated that the fund was sourced from the N12billion income made during the year.
He said the board had effected changes in the process and procedure for registration and conduct of examination for candidates to curb hitherto malpractices in the processes.
The JAMB boss told reporters at the weekend in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital.
He said contrary to the insinuation that the board increased the examination fee, which enabled the milestone, the JAMB boss said the agency rather made some reductions in the fee payable for the examination.
He said the examination board also significantly reduced the amount paid for exam by foreign applicants, maintaining that it was aimed at encouraging huge number of them.
Oloyede informed that the agency introduced Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) in the bid to address the imbalance observed in the admission process for the applicants.
He noted that with the introduction of the system, the process of admission into higher institutions of learning in the country has become more transparent, saying there was no need for any institution to come to the Headquarters of the board for certain rectitude.
Oloyede, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, said the system involved by the agency is making 90 percent of admission to be based on merit.
He also stated that the board had expanded its facilities by spending N1billion last year, adding that 15,000 centres would be created for prospective UTME candidates this year.
On his stewardship, he said: “It has been very tough but it has also been very rewarding. When we started in 2015 we did not realize we were going into a serious war. Initially we thought it is a call to duty, but when got there we realised it was not going to be easy because of entrenched interest. With capacity and network of such interest if you are not careful one will derail.
“We have conducted the first exams with the new technology in 2017 and now we have started selling the registration forms for 2018 UTME.

Reacting to reports that the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, PCN, is set to inaugurate a ‘Codeine Control and Other Related Matters Working Group, CCRWG,’.

Saraki stated on his Facebook and Twitter pages that it was encouraging to see the PCN taking an active stance against the use and distribution of illegal substances.

He said:-

It’s great to see Pharmacists Council of Nigeria take an active stance against the abuse of codeine and other drugs after the #SenateTacklesDrugAbuse Roundtable. This is a welcome development.

“As the PCN constitutes this group to control the distribution of codeine and other drugs in Nigeria, my colleagues and I in the 8th Senate will continue working to provide the necessary legislative interventions to fight #DrugAbuse across the nation.

“As we begin a new year, I call on other groups to join this fight to curb the widespread abuse of drugs in communities across the country.

The more people we have saying no to drugs, the more multifaceted Nigeria’s approach to fighting #DrugAbuse will be.

A woman battling breast cancer has left many people in tears after she died 18 hours after marrying the love of her life.
A Connecticut woman identified as Heather Lindsay has died just 18 hours after she took the bold step to marry the love of her life from her hospital bed on Dec. 22, two years after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Bridesmaid Christina Karas captured the triumph and joy moments after Lindsay, 31, and David Mosher said their “I do’s.”
The image of Lindsay throwing her arms up has since gone viral.
“She’s getting to shout from the rooftops that she loves Dave and is able to say, ‘I’m his wife,’” Karas told TV station WFSB.
“It reminds me of someone who is crossing the finish line of a marathon or something,” Mosher, 35, said of the photo. Lindsay succumbed to her illness hours after she tied the knot at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn.
The couple met at a dance class in 2015, and within a year Mosher was ready to propose.
He did just that, complete with a horse-drawn carriage, after Lindsay was diagnosed with cancer Dec. 23, 2015.
Over the next year, Karas helped Lindsay plan the wedding of her dreams.
“She was so hopeful,” Karas told NBC. “The way we would talk about it, you always kind of felt this isn’t it.”
Lindsay admitted to Karas she feared not living until her big day, and when her health took a turn, friends, family and doctors were quick to act.
They pushed up the wedding originally scheduled for Dec. 30 and intended to just lay the wedding dress across Lindsay, whom they feared was too weak to put it on. But she made it into her gown and to the hospital’s chapel, where she exchanged vows with Mosher.
“That moment right there was like, ‘Death, I’m not afraid of you! I am so in love and I am going to celebrate that love right now,’” Karas recalled.
Lindsay was buried Saturday, the day that was meant to be her wedding day.

Earl Nightingale, American motivational speaker and author, once said, “We become what we think about.” Perhaps truer words have never been spoken. The human mind is an incredible thing, and having the right attitude and mindset has routinely been stated by numerous successful people as being a pivotal key to success. Sometimes, however, it is easy to get side-tracked. Situations in life can get in the way of our goals, self-esteem, and personal well-being. Truthfully, success is a subjective term, and everyone will disagree over what constitutes being successful. Here are a list of guidelines, however, of some things to stop doing if you want to be or feel successful.

1. Stop Expecting Perfection

Often, we get frustrated when things don’t work out the way we want them to, or as quickly as we’d like them to. We stress over small details, or beat ourselves up for getting one thing wrong, or forgetting to dot one I or cross one T. People are fallible. Mistakes and drawbacks are a fact of life. Nothing is nor will it ever be perfect, and that’s okay.

Stressing out over minute details or things that would have been impossible to get to is unproductive and unhealthy. Start saying that you will do your personal best, because at the end of the day, you’re not in competition with anyone but yourself.

Example: Jennifer Lawrence is someone who everyone seems to be talking about right now, but did you know she was rejected for the role of Bella Swan in ‘Twilight‘? She also didn’t take theater classes. She just trusted her instincts and worked as hard as possible to land acting roles. Obviously, she wasn’t perfect for every role, but she didn’t expect perfection. She takes her failures and rejections well, trying to learn from each situation.

2. Stop Saying Yes When You Want to Say No

It’s always important to know your limits, and people will always try to test them. Human beings are social animals. We want to interact with others and feel like we are a part of something or like we are special to someone else. People also, for the most part, like to please others. Sometimes, however, it’s easy to be taken advantage of. Whether it’s helping a co-worker with something when you can’t really afford to, or loaning a friend money you can’t really afford to give.

Out of guilt, people often say yes to people and situations that they really should say no to. Don’t be afraid to trust your gut and say no. Sometimes you can’t stay a few hours later because you had other plans or important errands to run. Sometimes it’s okay to say no to that co-worker that keeps nagging you for help but is really just stalling because they don’t want to work and know you’ll help them.

Sometimes it’s okay to prioritize other things over work. Saying no is healthy. Saying no means that you know your boundaries and can demand respect.

Example: Margaret Thatcher is known as being tough. She was a powerful politician. She also knew during her career when she had to take a stand, and sometimes that stand meant saying no to bad political and economic policy.

3. Stop Negative Self-Dialogue

We all can probably play back in our minds every negative or embarrassing thing we’ve ever done to ourselves, been subjected to, or done to someone else. Whether it’s tripping over one’s shoelaces in the fourth grade, or being fired from a job, wronging someone else, or overhearing someone speaking negatively about us, those thoughts are forever solidified in our minds.

Replaying those thoughts, however, and constantly punishing oneself for past mistakes, is counterproductive at certain points. At some point, it’s more important to learn from situations and move on, instead of psychologically beating yourself up.

The next time you find yourself saying, “I’m not pretty enough”, “I did this horrible thing once five years ago and I’ll never forgive myself”, or any type of statement along those lines, turn off that negative self-dialogue. Look in the mirror and say something kind to yourself. Read some inspirational quotes. Acknowledge that you are taking steps and making an effort to be a better person. Admit to yourself that everyone makes mistakes, and most importantly, that making mistakes is okay.

Example: This article does a good job of listing Steve Job’s failures. We remember him anyway, and we remember him as a pioneer and someone who didn’t give up. When things go wrong, and they often do, it’s easy for us to remember every mistake we have ever made along the way.

Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of our goals because of that lack of confidence. Don’t give up and attempt to stay positive. Train your brain to think of things in a new, more positive way. Most of all, keep working hard. Failure doesn’t have to be permanent.

4. Stop Focusing On Just Today

Successful people tend to understand the value of a good plan. They plan out their day, their goals, a budget and they plan how much to save for retirement. That doesn’t mean they don’t have fun, though. They most certainly do! They just make sure to plan when it is appropriate and inappropriate to have fun. They make time for productivity and fun, but still save and think about the future.

So, stop just focusing on today and having fun. Think about where you want to be in five, 10 or 15 years down the road! Having a good focus aids in success!

Example: Neil deGrasse Tyson has been in love with the universe and science since he was nine years old. Because of that love, he worked long-term to study the things he cared about. He was accepted into Harvard where he majored in physics, eventually moving on to advanced education. His list of accomplishments would take up another full article in and of itself.

5. Stop Ignoring Your Goals

Stop believing things will just work out for you because you’re a good person. Good things only happen to people who make an effort. A part of making an effort is setting goals for oneself. As evidenced in the previous point, it’s not enough to just focus on the day at hand. It’s important to manage time and set short-term and long-term goals in order to be able to track progress and have something to strive for.

Example: Alan Turing is considered the father of artificial intelligence and computers. He also broke the code to the Nazi encryption machine called Enigma. He faced many challenges along the way, such as the inability to identify with others and being charged with indecency, for which he was eventually pardoned. Despite his personal struggles, though, he managed to break the code for Enigma, saving approximately 14 million people from death and in turn helped end World War 2.

6. Stop Isolating People

Successful people understand that not everything is about work, church or similar obligations. Some things are about family, relaxation, and hobbies. It’s easy to get the impression that everyone who feels or defines themselves as successful probably has no spare time on their hands, and in some cases, that’s true.

However, it isn’t always. Social isolation can kill people. In fact, many successful people have mastered the art of balance. They don’t isolate the people they love because they have large goals or something they want to accomplish. Instead, they incorporate those they love into their goals and hobbies.

Example: According to a recent Forbes article, many leaders feel lonely. However, here are 25 examples of social business leaders who seem to thrive on relationships. It’s okay to know how to work alone and prefer that, but it’s also important to be able to rely on your staff, friends, and family for support.

Involving people in leadership or product processes makes them feel valued and provides valuable feedback. Successful people enjoy that relationship. They also enjoy their time away from their goals and work to spend time with their loved ones.

7. Stop Comparing Yourself To Everyone Else

Successful people understand that the only person they can compete with today is the person they were yesterday. They are too focused on themselves and their goals to worry about anyone else. They don’t want to compare themselves to others because it’s counterproductive. However, they do analyze where they have weak points and are able to genuinely admire people who have mastered things they have not.

There is no use to comparing yourself to someone else. It’s counterproductive and harmful to your self-esteem. It also helps to harbor negative self-dialogue.

Example: Taylor Swift is one of the most successful recording artists of our time, but before that, she was a struggling musician in Nashville playing at small venues and coffee shops. She would turn in demos to various studios, covering a variety of songs.

It was only when she started playing and writing her own music that she got noticed and became the celebrity she is today. She faced a lot of adversity as well. There were people who doubted her skills and told her she couldn’t sing. Her confidence and faith in herself overcame that.

8. Stop Living In The Past

Successful people learn from their failures, but they do not live in the past. They take the skills and lessons they acquired from their failures and apply them to the present and future. Don’t live in your own personal past. Don’t define yourself by who you were. Define yourself by who you are today and by who you’re working toward becoming.

Example: Would we even remember Thomas Edison if he gave up on his ideas before becoming successful? Can you imagine simply focusing on what happened yesterday? So what if yesterday was a failure? Try again! Failure teaches us about what doesn’t work, and helps us get closer to a process that does work. Choose your attitude and control it. Move forward. Remember, failure is feedback.

9. Stop Tolerating Dishonest People

Successful people appreciate other people for their unique traits and gifts. They do not attempt to harm, belittle, or in any way demean others for their own successes or ideas. They are open to relationships with others, but know when to cut the cord, so to speak.

People can be too forgiving when it comes to being wronged, and it’s important to know one’s limits. Successful people do not tolerate negative and dishonest people, because they are too busy loving honest, sincere people.

Example: Everyone. We have all had frenemies. We have all invested in people who did not return our investment in them. Successful people know how to weed these dishonest people out. No one wants unneeded negativity around themselves or around the people they love. Read this article for tips on how to deal with dishonest people.

Reports from Spain have it that Enzo Zidane has been dismissed by La Liga outfit Alaves after failing to hold down a regular first-team place at the club.
Alaves have been looking to off-load players as they bring in new recruits and Zidane is the latest casualty.

The 22-year-old midfielder, son of Zinedine Zidane, has only played four matches for Alaves, and a total of 155 minutes.

The Katsina state police has arrested a 50-years-old man, identified as Sufiyanu Kamala for impregnating a mad woman in the state.
Kamala of Saniyar Jino village in Kankara local government area of Katsina State, was said to have lured the 25-years-old woman into his farmland where he had series of carnal knowledge of her, leading to pregnancy.
The spokesman for the Katsina State police command, DSP Gambo Isah who confirmed the development to newsmen in the state, said the mad woman is 28 weeks pregnant.
He said:-
On 8th December, 50 years old, Sufiyanu Kamala lured a mentally ill woman, 25 years old into his farmland. He had multiple carnal knowledge of her and impregnated her

A 25-year-old conductor, Tobi Ogunremi, who allegedly bit off a passenger’s lip and punched him on his face, was on Wednesday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Ogunremi, who resides at No. 5, Idi-Orogbo St., Rabinyan, Ijoko, Lagos is facing a one-count charge of assault.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told court that the accused committed the offences on Dec.7 at Shyllon Junction, Ilupeju , a Lagos Suburb.
Eruada said the accused physically assaulted Olowoye Adedayo, after he refused to give him his balance money and later threw it on the ground.

“Adedayo sustained a mouth injury following the bite, as well as several punches he received from Ogunremi during an argument,” he told the court.

Eruada said the offence contravened Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted him bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said the sureties should be gainfully employed and must show evidence of a two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government, as part of the bail conditions.

Anifowoshe adjourned the case until Jan. 17, 2018 for mention.

Boko Haram ex-Chief Intelligence Officer (CIO) Abdulkadir Abubakar, has warned the leader of the violent sect, Abubakar Shekau, to stop using innocent girls who are being hypnotized as human bombs.
Abubakar, otherwise known as Abu Muhammad, also warned other factional leaders of the group including Mamman Nur, Abu Musad Albarnawi and Abbor Minok to repent from their deadly ways and embrace peace.
Abubakar was the CIO of the terror group and one of its top commanders, until his arrest in June by the military in Buni Yadi in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The ex-commander who spoke to PRNigeria in his cell in Maiduguri, regretted that a lot of innocent young girls were captured, tortured, hypnotised and used by Abubakar Shekau for suicide bombing.
“I am calling on Abubakar Shekau, Mamman Nur, Abbor Minok and Abu Musad Albarnawi to lay down thier arms and to stop the senseless killings”, he said.
“Shekau has continued to demonstrate his cruelty and atrocities against humanity. He had killed a lot of souls, destroyed homes and rendered people homeless. He continued to exercise God’s authority to himself by killing innocent souls at will without any justification.
“This was the why all his commanders left him. He doesn’t have pity for the aged, women, children as well as young girls, who are mostly suffering and dying in his camp.
“His followers are raping and committing all sort of atrocities under his nose while he continued to show no concern. Many who dared to question his dastardly acts, were promptly eliminated on his orders.
“Some of his commanders like Aliyu and our Chief Mechanic known as “Paper” were killed for begging Shekau to provide food to mothers and their children at the time our camp in Abiso ran out of food.
“When Shekau was told to help them, he said he did not come to Sambisa to feed the Children of “Handak” he said if 100,000 of them die everyday, that’s none of his business.
“At some point women became beggars to feed thier children in Sambisa, while at least 13 children died of malnutrition and other hardship meted on them by Shekau.
“This is the reason why Mamman Nur, Albarnawi, Man Chari, Abbor Minok and Abba Albarnawi including myself deserted him and form our own factional groups. Mamman Nur moved to the shores of Chad while Albarnawi and Abbah (last born of Muhammad Yusuf) remained at the shores of Magumeri.
“All of us as at then were all hunting to kill Shekau just like the Nigerian military because of the attrocities he committed under our name. We had fought nine times with him and killed many of his men.
“Shekau must know that all those women he is sending with Improvised Explosive Device(IEDs), in places of worships, market and schools are our sisters and mothers and they don’t deserve to die.
“He must know that one day he would be called and to account for all the atrocities he has committed in the name of Islam. There is no compulsion in religion. Indeed God has really allowed the truth to prevail over falsehood.
“There is no verse of the Holy Qur’an that permitted Muslims to kill anybody. God will punish even those who feel happy while we are killed not to talk of killing innocent souls. So you cannot kill anyone who doesn’t believe in your faith or practice.
“Arrogantly, Shekau declared a whole country and people living it as infidels and ordered that everyone living in that city and not Sambisa must be killed. Islam can never be synonymous to senseless killings.
“Shekau should remember that he was nobody but ordinary student. He should remember that he had only two sets of cloths when we were in Maiduguri. I remember ever telling him that, ‘Brother Shekau, why can’t you buy more cloths to wear? He once told me that he was afraid of meeting God in the day of judgement.
“He should look at himself and ask if he has achieved from the senseless course. Despite all the looted wealth and power he had acquired, was he able to buy himself good health? He is now a cripple. Isn’t that a lesson for him to learn and understand that God is punishing you for the pain you inflicted on others?”

Yesterday, several properties were razed as members of the Hausa and Gwari tribes clashed in Bwari, Abuja, Punch reports.
An eyewitness, Musa Nurudeen, who spoke to Punch said the clash started after a fight broke out between a Hausa youth and a Gwari youth.
The two tribes had for a while been tussling for supremacy, Nurudeen said, as there exists two traditional rulers from both tribes – Sarkin Bwari from the Hausa tribe and Etsu Bwari from Gwari.
The fight between the youths reportedly led to the death of the Gwari youth, which angered his people, and led to the clash. Nurudeen said:
In October, there was a protest by the Gwari people that there cannot be two rulers in one kingdom and that they want the government to recognise the Etsu Bwari while the Sarkin Bwari should be abolished.

So last night, there was a fight between a Gwari and a Hausa youth which led to the death of the Gwari youth, this infuriated the Gwari youths and that was what led to the clash.
Security operatives have since contained the violence, Punch reports, asking residents to remain indoors and turning motorists back.
3 National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) patrol vehicles were also seen in the area.
While the FCT Police Command has confirmed the clash, they said the details are still sketchy. The FCT Police Spokesperson Anjuguri Manzah said:
The details of the incident is still sketchy, but our immediate objective is to contain the violence and ensure security of lives and property.
